8:09 am - Gee, Thanks!
|
So I had a bunch of updates to Ubuntu I decided to install this morning. Well, that didn't turn out so well. Apparently there was a kernel upgrade and it hosed a bunch of stuff. My video drivers went kerblooey, as did VirtualBox. Given this fairly intolerable asshattery, and the fact that the EVE Linux client continues to be good, but not perfect, I'm going back to Windows.
I will dearly miss my desktop cube and the many other awesome features, but I'm sorry. Something as trivial as a software update shouldn't require me to perform brain surgery in order to get my machine to actually work.
I hear tell that there will be a new version of Ubuntu out sometime in October, and I might try it again, but for now it's back to Microsoft.
Ah well. At least I'll have beer today.

5:20 pm - I have a sphinx!
|
My daughter is apparently part sphinx. When walking to my desk, she blocked my way and said "You can't go by until you solve my riddle." At which point she recited Hickory Dickory Dock.
I really love my daughter. :)

9:32 am - Santa's Little Helper Part 2
|
It's now 9:30 and still no sign of the guy I'm supposed to help. Yay!
I just know that if I start doing anything that would require actual time, he'll log in. Think I'll just fuck around with some Level 1 missions for a bit.

So I made plans with a friend of mine to help him run a bunch of missions in EVE and get his standings up so he can do Factional Warfare. We're supposed to get together at 8:00AM, and here it is, 8:30 and there's no sign of him. Sigh.
Makes me happy that I just spent like 60 mil outfitting a frigate for uber pwnage.

9:35 am - Back To The Spreadsheets
|
Given that I've felt pretty good over this last week (minus a bit of a problem with my back) I've gone back to station trading in EVE as of this morning. I'm glad because...
1. I find it a lot of fun 2. The price of ice has taken a nose dive
Anyway, now I'm trying to find things to invest in and not having a whole lot of luck. My previous list is still pretty solid, but I've only got about 19.5% of my money actually working for me at this point. I need to expand my operations. :)

7:43 pm - Odd Names
|
I was searching on Napster for a song I heard on the radio at the local Longhorn (it ended up being "Breathe" by Anna Nalick) and ended up finding another song that I'd heard a while ago and could only remember part of the bridge for. I also discovered a few odd band names...

2:28 pm - RIP Usenet
|
So as of June 23rd, Time Warner/Road Runner shut down their news servers. This is, for a number of reasons, a pain in the ass for me.
I just did a quick check on a few other usenet server providers and found the cheapest, practical plan to be about $15/month. Do any of you use cheaper services?

8:50 pm - Less Firefox Hate
|
Just so you know that your host isn't afraid to let go of the hate and say things like "Well, I might have been wrong about blah, blah, blah", I have to admit I'm actually starting to like Firefox 3.0's Location ("Awesome") Bar. I still haven't recovered the functionality I lost (i.e., what 2.x used to do), but I'm grooving on what 3.0's bar lets me do.
I have watched a number of music videos on YouTube, as I am known to do, and can just start typing in the name of the song and BAM!, Firefox pops up a list with what I want right there on the screen. I'm still trying to get used to all the changes, and the whole bookmarks interface is still a categorical piece of shit, but I've lost a bit of the hate.
Just thought you should know.

6:09 pm - What Metal?
|
This generation is bullshit. I'm sorry, but you are seriously beginning to suck. In theory this was supposed to be the "label free" generation, but for some reason you all seem to think that everything needs to be labeled and categorized. You need to have a word or a term for everything, and think that every little tweak or twist requires an entirely new label so as to differentiate it from everything else.
Take, as an example, the various "sub genres" of the music collectively known as "Metal". When I was a kid, we had "Heavy Metal". Simple. We did also have "Hard Rock" and we sometimes referred to some music as "Guitar Rock", but that's as far as it went.
Today I was checking out a band, on a friend's recommendation, and found that they are supposedly best described as "Female-Fronted Symphonic Power Metal". Smelling some bullshit, and remembering some recently-tossed-about terms like "Nu Metal" and "Black Metal", I checked on Wikipedia and discovered the following:
Avant-garde metal Black metal Death metal Doom metal Glam metal Gothic metal Groove metal Power metal Speed metal Stoner metal Symphonic metal Thrash metal Traditional heavy metal Viking metal Alternative metal Christian metal Crust punk Folk metal Funk metal Grindcore Grunge Industrial metal Metalcore Neo-classical metal Nu metal Post-metal Progressive metal Rap metal Sludge metal
Are you people insane!?! What the fuck is wrong with you? Are you people so insecure with yourselves and who you are that you need to create all these fucking terms and "types" so that you and your pathetic group of friends can better relate to each other and other, equally pathetic people? Does this crazy collection of labels really help you put the world into perspective and make you happy?
Who sits around all day having conversations like this...
"Hmm, you know, Billy, this isn't quite Black Metal is it?"
"No, Bob, but it's not really Gothic Metal, either."
"You're right. I was thinking Gothic Metal, but then I was like, no, it's not quite gothic enough."
"I think, I think it's Doom Metal."
"Yes! That's it! It's Doom Metal. You nailed it, man!" [high fives all around]
"Whew! Glad we figured that one out. My world was dangerously close to spiraling out of control because I'm too simple-minded to just dig the music without it being rigorously categorized and classified!"
Fuck you. Just enjoy the shit and stop being so fucking hung up on all this "identity" bullshit. Back in the day, we used to be able to listen to all kinds of different music and never once did we have to plop ourselves into the middle of some kind of "sub-culture" to enjoy it. I never felt the need to put my music into rigid categories, and/or make up new bullshit categories in order to make myself feel better about what I was listening to, and neither should you.
Listen to it, enjoy it, expose your friends to it, have a good time. Stop trying to stick a fucking tag on anything that sits still for two seconds.

2:47 pm - Funny Taste
|
I ordered pizza yesterday from the place I always get it, and (as I mentioned in an earlier entry) it sucked. The taste was just off and I was kind of pissed. Well, it seems like the problem is with me.
Pretty much everything I've eaten or drank today has tasted funny. The coffee, some Ritz crackers, it's weird. I'm not sick, at least, I don't feel sick, so I just don't know what's going on. This is somewhat annoying since I really like food, love my coffee and now everything just tastes "off".
Ah well.

10:54 pm - Your Host, or, The Automatic Coffee Maker
|
So while I was chatting on the phone with my friend I made a couple pots of coffee. I then got the bright idea to set the coffee maker up to be ready in the morning, so that I could just hit the button on my way out for my morning cigarette and come back in to freshly-brewed caffeine. I go through the motions of cleaning the machine, putting in the water and coffee grounds. Then I disengage my brain and hit the brew button.
This tells me that I'm making too much coffee and that the whole process is probably ingrained in muscle memory at this point.

Just hanging out and such before I have to play the regular over-the-phone RPG with Benn.
A few random thoughts:
- The pizza place I always order from sent me a pizza that sucked today. I'm hoping they haven't gone to shit. - Sheryl Crow can do a mean song. - I am very tired right now.

11:47 am - Oddity
|
For some reason, yet to be revealed, my father is now out in the driveway being interviewed by a television news crew. He went out to take a brief walk and came back with them in tow, and only had time to tell my mother "I'm going to be interviewed for television" before things got underway.
So, we're all kind of sitting here wondering what's up. I'm hiding in my apartment and smoking in the hallway (as opposed to the porch) so as not to inadvertently wind up on television myself.
EDIT: On second thought, I wish I still had some of my greasepaint. I'd make myself up like Captain Spaulding and go out onto my porch naked. Because if anything needs to be on television, it's that.
