11:12 pm - impressionable youth I charge my iPhone by plugging it into my computer. When I shut my computer down I feel a genuine urge to scramble to unplug my phone before the shutdown completes, lest my iPhone experience a trauma similar to Spock would if someone died while he was mind-melding with them.

02:01 am - pushups - week 5 TOO HARD Last week I should have moved onto week 5 but it looked hard and I was grumpy so I didn't do it. Tonight I tried, and for the first time pushed until I dropped. Sure enough, it's too hard. And also, pushing myself too much seems bad based on how my side hurts. So... back to week 4 I suppose.

04:11 pm - warning!
 warning Originally uploaded by vespid_interest
I went to a terrific park in Bellevue today that had a lot of neat water. There was a big basin with water cascading off in waterfalls, and at the top was a rail with this sign on the ground. What do you suppose it is warning us against? Standing? It almost looks like it wants us to not lean over the railing, but that would mean the diagonal white line is an iconic version of the rail, not the "no" sign. I'm confused.

11:50 pm - hundred pushups - end of week 4 I just did the "exhaustion test" at the end of week 4 and I did 40 pushups. When I started on 7/14 I could only do 20, I didn't expect to make such progress. I don't think 100 is anywhere in sight though.

01:51 pm - portable snacks Somehow it came up that it would be easier to eat bugs now if we grew up eating them. This leads to the image of pulling over at rest stops on family vacations and feasting off of the radiator. A few cars over they'd be putting spray cheese on crackers, but we'd be picking the wings off a dragonfly. "Make a wish!"
I'm going to have to read this post a bunch of times over the years so that when I'm old and my memory is failing I'll believe it is true.

12:16 am - 100 pushup challenge It's the end of week 3 and I just did 83 pushups in about 8 minutes. If I reach 100 early can I stop? Or if I die?

09:43 pm - the distressing future of entertainment is now Entertainment is chipping away at my soul today. First I found out that Miley Cyrus covered Cyndi Lauper's "Girls just want to have fun" song, and it is slightly more manufactured yet better:
Miley "Hannah Montana" Cyrus's sample on Amazon Even though it is better it is way worse. Cyndi Lauper's original version. I remember it being peppier.
I pretty much hated Cyndi Lauper in the 80s, but at least she was awesome in Vibes.
Next we have Paris Hilton's response to McCain using her to diss Obama. I hate her so much, but there is some dark corner of my psyche that is secretly rooting for her. This video doubles all possible emotional responses to her, to confusing effect.

08:29 pm - iPhone Well, the iPhone hasn't done anything for me since lunchtime -- I feel a little let down.
But it did find a restaurant for me at lunch. My friend Jenny and I were looking for a hamburger place named Dick's that people say good things about and we heard there was one nearby. We didn't see it by randomly walking around so I asked iPhone's Google Maps for "Dicks in Seattle" and it showed us there was one about a block away. Then we had a nice giggle as Google could only find five dicks in all of Seattle. Whoever named that place was clearly a "pillar" of comedy.
One bad thing: I can't seem to play music from it at work since my home machine has the officially synced iTunes. I knew I wouldn't be able to drag music to it, but I though I could still *listen* to its music at work. Of course I can plug headphones into it but I want to hear my computer's sound too.
A good thing though: it has a great stopwatch, which I've wanted a lot of times over the years. Last night I used it while exercising. What I really want is a countdown timer though, the built-in one only goes by minutes and I want 90 seconds. Or a few weeks ago I realized a board game was missing its timer -- I would have wanted a 30 second one then. Bill, maybe this is an app you could make. It could even have an egg timer graphic on it. Or maybe the app store has one already, I haven't delved into that yet.
Gotta go. I have to cradle my iPhone some more -- they're so fragile at this stage.

04:17 pm - book recommendation: Soon I will Be Invincible I'm back from vacation (more on that later hopefully), during which I read "Soon I will Be Invincible", which I enjoyed a lot. It's told alternately from a villain and hero's point of view with just the right amount of "behind the scenes of a superpowered person" to be interesting. It is still completely in-genre though so it's not sticking to reality too closely. It's squarely in the vein of Dr. Horrible's Sing-along blog, but a little more serious and without the singing (though still a light read). I recommend it.

09:57 pm - Dr. Horrible Don't miss Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." I enjoyed it a lot -- more than I thought I would. It's not really sing-along and it's not really a blog, it's a short story of (attempted?) villainy told by "Dr. Horrible", and sometimes they sing. But it's quality stuff. You only have until Sunday to watch it, then it goes away to appear one day on DVD. (And part 3 doesn't go up until Saturday.)

02:54 pm - locally grown clothing Does anyone know how to find clothes that are made in America? I check tags in stores sometimes, but it is rare to see "USA" on the tag.

09:44 am - grammar question: can I do this: What do you think of a sentence with two colons in it? It bothers me but if it is correct maybe I'll start using it. Below is an example from an email I can't quite bring myself to send.
"Speaking of adding the icon: use this program: [link to icon-replacer]"
Good form or bad form?

02:44 pm - new game I made some last-minute changes to my new game last night, and now QA is about to sign off on it at 3:00pm, then 12 hours later it will go "live" on our website for sale. This is cutting it close, but I'm happy with how it turned out. About 3 months of 60-hour weeks followed by 3 months of 80-hour weeks -- now that the stress is starting to dissipate I find I can barely think, or walk! I need a nap. No vacation yet though, I have to be around in case issues come up. Since I can fix the game and we can get a new version on our site within an hour, I need to stick around. But going back to 40-hour weeks will be *like* a vacation.
I'm pretty happy.

12:38 am - gas mileage I bought my car several months ago because it has decent HP yet still gets good gas mileage. I've been driving a lot lately rather than taking the bus so I've been getting more chances to check my mileage, and on my last tank I got just over 30 mpg. Suck! I can usually get it down to at least 27 -- 30 means I wasn't having nearly enough fun.
