| | sparklehorse - sea of teeth | ] | I have a pretty resigned relationship to the dentist nowadays. Things generally go like this:
"Wow, these look beautiful! Very nice!" "Thank you!" "You floss really well! Barely any plaque." "Aw, thanks." "...Oh, but there's some fillings here, huh." "Yeah." "...and look, there's a rotted hole in this one right here." "..." "That'll be two hundred dollars."
Every six months, like clockwork. I'm totally cool with needles and all that crap by now, but it doesn't stop me from getting secretly furious when a friend who hasn't been to the dentist in FIVE YEARS comes back with a clean bill of health. I wish I were a shark. |

| | weezer - across the sea | ] |

I'm back from Moscow! I came home on Saturday night to my weird-smelling apartment, where my lovely boyfriend had left some red, white and blue flowers and an apple pie. Aw. I've been stumbling around and falling asleep way too early, but today I finally managed to sit still for four hours and get all my photos up on flickr. I lugged around a million-pound camera for a REASON, goddammit. You can see the set by clicking the photo above, or see a fancy enormous slideshow here.
Two weeks is just about long enough to see the city, and my fossilized language skills served me better than I expected. My mom and I spent as much time in the homes of friends and family as we did doing touristy things, so I think I got a pretty balanced picture of life there. Russians basically want to feed you and make you fat for the winter. The city is growing fast, perpetually under construction and clogged with cars. It feels like everyone is overcompensating for the time when no one had any stuff at all by getting lots of stuff and waving it around to make sure you can see it. The people and the architecture are both much dressier than in America. There is an intense preoccupation with everything imported. Food is EXPENSIVE. And if it's not expensive it's covered in mayonnaise. Good thing I did so much walking.
Highlights were the Nikulin Circus and the Tretyakov Gallery, because I am a cultured young lady. I had a really good time with my mom. I don't think I've spent this much time with her since I went away to school, and it was really good to spend it as adults rather than as cranky-kid-and-parent. Though there was a tiny bit of that too.
It's hard to sum up a trip that wound up being pretty personal... the photos do a better job. All in all I'm glad I went and I'm glad I'm home. No one can ever make me eat a beet again. |

This is where I've been spending all my time now that I am unemploooooyed (well, sort of). I love looking at photos of artists' workspaces and mine isn't nearly up to snuff with some of the ones out there, but it'll do. I miss having a standing desk, bigtime. :|

Happy birthday Jeeeeen! You are twenty-four. I was going to do this as a real painting but I'm having a really really shitty time with paint today so it stays like this. :|
I realized as I was uploading that this is eerily similar to my last drawing for Jen. Way to go, me. |

I'm not a huge cookie person, and while I like chocolate chip cookies, I've never been able to find a recipe that fits my vague criteria. They have to be chewy, but not uncooked tasting. Crispy, but not like eating a goddamn crouton. And not too sweet. If they are huge and attractive that is a plus.
Usually I just give up and eat a snickerdoodle or something. But I was really craving them the other day, and the very first recipe I found on epicurious turned out be the best chocolate chip cookie recipe in the universe. No shit. I have made them four times in the last month and I would like another one right now. But they are all gone.
( So here it is, copy/pasted for your enjoyment. ) |

[Nov. 29th, 2007|03:12 pm] |
I have kind of a thing for tights and knee socks. I keep forgetting how many I've bought already and Sock-Dreams.com is based out of Portland, so consequently I am at the point of needing a dedicated dresser for it all. And I'm more or less okay with that. But this site is going to be a real problem in the near future.
Maybe some other people would enjoy having this problem with me and then I wouldn't feel too bad. |

| | ben kweller - sha sha | ] | I have the week off work, so I have been spending it catching up on my life. It's gotten away from me a bit in the last two years. I'm currently covered in dust and dead spiders from finally vacuuming this rathole, and as soon as I find a drafting table and assemble a pile of wood from ikea I'll have a nice little studio room in my apartment.
But that's the tangible stuff. I also got my website spruced up. I hadn't touched it since 2005 and it was driving me insane. But no longer! There's a new front page, the art section and bio are finally current, and I added a shop section, where you can buy tshirts (more coming soon) and art prints. Yaaaaaaaay. I feel much better.
So here it is! Awesome. |

My TCAF pictures are fiiiinally up. I feel like I was barely there so I'm not sure how representative of the festival these are, but I really enjoyed myself. Sorry to everyone who came by to see me and found an empty chair. I really enjoyed the notes and drawings, and wish I'd spent a liiiiittle more time indoors... but it was so nice outside and I missed my friends. Staying at Fenwick's was the best! And hanging out with new and old comics people was equally fabulous.
Toronto was gorgeous all weekend and I saw lots of people I hadn't seen since college, doing well and looking very slim and pleasant. The festival itself was in a beautiful building, and very well-attended from what I could tell. It's the best one I've been to in a long time. So thanks, Chris! Thanks, Beguiling! Thanks, Canada! (Except for that part where you wouldn't let me leave you and I had to stay an extra night in an airport hotel. What was up with that, Canada.) |

| | otis redding - love man | ] | The second page of my Dicebox comic is posted today! It's the last one. That font is still really big.
This weekend I will be showing my face at the Toronto Comic Art Festival, at Victoria College. I will ostensibly be at the Flight table, though really I am so childishly stoked about being in Toronto again that I'm more likely to be found wandering the streets with roti smeared all over my face. I'm not bringing anything to sell due to Customs and Not Wanting To Sit At A Table All Day, but I will be shaking hands and being nice to people, free o' charge.
Hope to see you there! |

You can view it here, and the second page will go up next Wednesday. Then Anne is going to fill in for two weeks and it's going to be ridiculous. That's just a guess I am making. |
