The Brazilian Bomb

The universe is trying to tell me something… I must drink a Caipirinha sometime in the near future! From a recent IM conversation with Chris where he and a friend were going to enjoy a Very Happy Hour at a bar that served them up to an article about them on Slashfood yesterday to the fact that the only Brini Maxwell podcast that seems to be playing properly in my iTunes is this one:

<lj-embed id="39" />

It is my plan to download all of these separately and create a DVD from them sometime. I love podcasts but, like my daily reads, I have the hardest time keeping up with them. I could never find the right time to watch the show with zefrank and it would just pile up in my iTunes library until it stopped downloading them from assumed lack of interest. I’m not much for watching video on my iPod, and my commute is often used to read, so I can only handle music in my head, not speaking.

Otherwise, it looks to be a fantastic day today. Probably good day for a walk to the zoo, or just a nap in the window on the couch. I had a lovely breakfast at Tonic after last night’s (over?) indulgence at MCCXXIII last night. $20 for open bar from 5-9, no restrictions. After about 8 or so vodka drinks I definitely got my money’s worth, but the room did seem to develop its own orbit when I poured myself into bed, hence the need for food this morning.

I also think I’ve tamed feedburner into properly showing my videos within my RSS feed by telling it to add enclosures for rich media, so RSS readers may see a “Play Now” link from time to time. Hopefully you can ignore that and the videos will still show up properly in the feed. Those of you actually visiting my site on a regular basis, uh… wow and thanks!

Since I couldn’t find it via YouTube, I’m sharing it myself. Anyone care for some music?

From the Post blogs

A recent letter to the Get There blog at washingtonpost.com:

Letter From Fed-Up Metro Rider

This letter came in on Aug. 1 from an Arlington commuter who gave up on Metro. He starts off describing a particular incident, but it wasn’t this one thing that led him to switch to his car. I’m a big fan of transit, but I know that day-after-day crowding and delays on Metro wear people down. See what you think of a fellow commuter’s thought process.

I’m not including the letter since it’s all up on the Post’s site. It was forwarded to me by a co-worker this morning and it’s an interesting read, but I didn’t know why she sent it to me… until I got down the bottom and saw the name of the submitter. I work with him, he’s the other ‘mo on the contract, and it’s very interesting to see how he portrays himself here as opposed to what I’ve experienced of him at the office.

Worlds collide

I may have mentioned this film before, probably just to a few people via IM. I’m fairly sure it was shown at last year’s One in Ten film festival: (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1.

Dreamship Surprise [English title], a box office smash in Germany, is an irreverent spoof of the sci-fi genre from Star Trek to Star Wars. In the year 2304, the Martian colonies wage war upon the Earth. Our only hope against total annihilation is the prissy crew of the Dreamship Surprise. Unfortunately, they’re much better suited for the Miss Waikiki beach contest than interstellar heroics.

Sadly, I missed it when it was in DC, and I only heard about it from seeing a snippet of video “Space Taxi” from the film on YouTube (which I can’t seem to find now) and it looked hilarious. It also looked to be completely in German, a quick lookup showed that the DVD release also has no English language track either. I found a copy of the movie via the internets, and found people that had made subtitle files for it, but they didn’t sync up properly the further into the movie you went. Being a few seconds off really adds up! Well last night I finally had some success finding a file with proper subtitles to match. I combined the two, converted it for TiVo and it’s ready to view sometime this weekend. I’m not expecting a movie of quality, but I’m sure it’ll be good for more than a few laughs. The trick will be creating a DVD of it with the subtitles included, too.

The other evening I saw a friend I used to share sci-fi circles with walking down the street and while it was good to catch sight of him, I’m really kinda pleased that I didn’t catch the “sci-fi spread”. I’m sure it’s only a bad thing to me, but I never found it good to be around people that don’t discourage some bad habits. I love my gaming and my sci-fi, but I also love getting off my ass and moving around once in a while.

And since I couldn’t find a suitable video of the movie to share, I’ll just have to inflict this upon you: BearForce 1 — the world’s first all-bear synth-disco “boy” band. I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover, but what if, like Colton Ford’s “singing” and possibly BearForce 1 as well, the book only wants to be judged by its cover?

<lj-embed id="37" />

I never thought this could happen to me…

My Twitter followers already know this, but it bears repeating. This morning I left the house a little later than usual, which tends to make for a different metro crowd. Well this morning, some of the men on the train were handsome & hot beyond belief. I was really enjoying the ride, being seated and surrounded by a bevy of attractive fellows and what should happen at the Shaw/Howard U station? Another very attractive man steps on the train… eating a popsicle — messily.

I really wondered if I was either still dreaming, on a rare queer episode of The Red Shoe Diaries, or if I’d walked into the letters column of an adult magazine for men’s men, so to speak.

I’m going to write a diary… someday!

I’m still playing catch up with my RSS feeds, I haven’t gotten over to livejournal yet, but reading up on Chris’ blog, I saw his entry about Harry Potter and the Secret Chamber Pot of Azerbaijan, so of course I had to find a non-YouTube version online (which I did and it’s currently on my iPod next to Hip Hop Kids) but in the course of our IM conversation he mentioned an old SNL TV Funhouse spoof called Titey: Disney’s cheerful spin on Titanic. I missed a lot of SNL, especially the shorts except for TAGD, but gods bless the internet for giving it back to me in small commercial-free doses…

<lj-embed id="36" />

I believe there will be the partaking of nachos and drinks tonight — *fingers crossed.

[RSS readers, click through to watch Titey]

on the elevator this morning…

I was actually pressing the close door button pretty severely but as the elevator wasn’t responding, I gave up. Just as the doors were about to close, I saw a figure sprinting for the gap, so I held the doors. “I’m in such a hurry to get to work,” he said.

He then went on to tell me how his wife just picked 5 out of 6 lottery numbers, “Here that would have been worth about $150,000, but back home it was only $300.”

My floor came before his, so I wished him a good morning and exited — I never did ask where back home was.

Mo-HEE-toe…

What would the day be without at least one multimedia posting… The last time I hung out with Jhim he reminded me of this bit from Family Guy where my namesake (the family dog) praises the virtues of an open bar on “The Bachelor” and wonders if he’s ordered a gay drink…

<lj-embed id="33" />

The other night on the phone, Michael was talking about songs he’d like to put on the playlist for the road trip to NYC and he expressed shock that there was a song he couldn’t find in the iTunes Store. His impression was that they had everything! Honestly, I kinda thought they had a lot as well, but I don’t do a lot of online music purchasing, so I really don’t know. But I was adding songs to the new iPod today and I got a wild hair to hear a cover of “I Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love” but I couldn’t remember who did the song, it took me 5 increasingly surgical Google searches to find out it had been done by B Angie B, a former MC Hammer dancer. I can see the video in my head (I’d share it but it seems to have been flushed from the waves by lawyers) and it was just so 90’s R&B/Dance, synchronized women tearing it up with big moves, lot of Hammer influence, but it was still fun. Enjoy!

		<lj-embed id="34" />

Overpacking is my gay-given right!

I finally pulled out the “big” suitcase and looked at it’s capacity versus what I thought I wanted to bring… I am so screwed.

Just like for my week at the beach, I made a list. My problem is that I almost never know how much to bring. The beach was easy since we had a washer/dryer there and I didn’t have to go overboard (bad choice of words) on clothing. Even so, the majority of my items are t-shirts so they roll and fit tightly. My biggest concern right now seems to be shoes. I’m going to need 4 pairs at minimum: formal, sandals, sneakers, workout. These size 13’s take up a lot of room, damnit. And every other second I think of something new to add to the list. Some of this is just keeping my brain on paper. I’d hate to say to myself, “Well of course I’ll bring my camera!” and walk out of here Sunday afternoon without it. I still wonder how I’m going to get most of this stuff into my suitcase, and a carry on bag, and there’s my laptop backpack as well. Gadget geek on travel, beware!

I swung by Pentagon City last night and picked up a new iPod and some books for the trip, “Next” and “Fragile Things” and of course a Sudoku book. Here’s hoping that I won’t have to crack it too much, but I might need a little downtime, you never know. Thursday evening, Gregory and I hit Filene’s Basement and Macy’s and I acquired a new pair of sunglasses as well as some shirts and socks. We probably also lost a few pounds in sweat from wandering around, but the exercise was good for us and gave us room for some amazing paella at Mar de Plata in Dupont. I suspect that location is more expensive than their 14th St one, but it was still yummy. Gregory took a photo with his iPhone, but without proper lighting, any cameraphone is going to suffer, so it didn’t turn out very well.

Yesterday at work was interesting. My brain was definitely ready for vacation. I’d taken my slacks to the cleaners so I wore jeans, which gave me a different attitude as well and the day went by fairly quickly. I got totally stuffed on a hot dog from Five Guys (so much so that I needed alka seltzer in the afternoon) and managed to wrap up everything that needed to be done before I leave. I doubt the place will fall apart in my absence, but maybe a little evil part of me wouldn’t mind if it did. Then again, it just means more to clean up when I return.

Back to packing, and clearing things off the TiVo and ripping more tunes for the iPod. Michael’s preparing a playlist on his iPod for the drive to NYC, so I won’t need one of my own, but I did reserve the right for veto power if his stuff is unpalatable.

My Humps(day)

From this morning’s IM:

[08:34] urban bohemian: One other thing I hate about this job…
[08:34] hopeless khowaga: good morning?
[08:34] urban bohemian: I got cruised *hard* on the metro this morning in addition to there being tons of hot guys on the train. And I have no one here to talk about it with.
[08:34] urban bohemian: Oh yeah, so far it is.

…

[08:36] hopeless khowaga: Sooo… was the guy hot?
[08:36] hopeless khowaga: Oh, god, i just wrote, “Was the guy hard?” More coffee, please!
[08:36] urban bohemian: He was in a slightly-older-guy kinda way.
[08:36] urban bohemian: It was weird, he got on the train and smiled and winked (obviously) in my direction, but I thought he was just greeting the girl seated in front of me.
[08:37] urban bohemian: He went down to the other half of the car to sit down and while I made a note of where he was, I didn’t think too much of it. When he disembarked, he walked back to my 1/2 of the car to exit there, gave me another look and a smile and even turned around to smile through the window.
[08:38] urban bohemian: Of course the inherent dilemma is just like cruising someone while driving. Not a whole lot one can do.

…

[08:42] hopeless khowaga: Wow, that’s pretty, um… that’s a nice way to start the day

Yes… yes it is. I, of course, ponder posting a craigslist ad about it, but of course the last person to express that much interest in me on metro was Jason and we know how that ended up. Still, I won’t exactly avoid checking the missed encounters listings myself, maybe… I dunno, do I post an ad or not? Sadly I didn’t save the details in my brain as I usually would, but I’m sure I could come up with something so he’d know it was me. Assuming he even checks CL. Chris says whatever I post can’t be worse than his neck of the woods. As DCist doesn’t have a similar category, I can’t retaliate.

More important is the fact that I’ve got no one here at the office to really dish with. With all the people that have left, our contract is, for lack of a better term, a sausage party — and not in the good way. There were quite a few distractions on the train this morning, some of them wearing badges indicating they work for the same agency I do. I think I’ve said this before, I need to “run late” more often, the eye candy on the metro is so much nicer a little later in the a.m.

Gonna be a scorcher today, ugh.

Originally published at urban bohemian's blog.
these are the times…

Virgo: You may have to cut back on your big vacation plans for a while, but don’t get discouraged. You can still take your trip; it may just need to wait. Paradoxically, the more effort you put into making it happen now, the less likely it will. You are better off if you can shift your focus to something besides your vacation for a while, at least until the time is right. (Rick Levine horoscope)

Well my trip is still on, so stuff that noise, but it has been a rather trying past couple of days. Friday night my monitor went on the fritz. I’m not sure why or how. I was only out for a few hours and I come back and it’s off, or appeared to be. So I rebooted when it didn’t respond. Thankfully my PC has a bright white opening screen and I could just barely make out the flicker when I turned it on, so unfortunately, it wasn’t the video card. I plugged it’s twin flatscreen into the PC and it worked fine, so that meant time for a new monitor. I wasn’t in a mood to shop too much, and Best Buy had a really good price on a highly rated wide screen monitor from acer so I nabbed that the next morning. To console myself, I also picked up a bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo which work very well and as the added bonus give my PC a bluetooth adapter so I can more easily sync my phone contacts. Still it was money I didn’t need to spend right before vacation. I have the money, I’d just rather it be used for other things.

That line about the more effort I put into it is pretty interesting though, as my iPod has decided that it wants to die too! Last night my trip prep involved laundry, initially 3 loads, but upgraded to 5 since the laundry room was empty. I took in some dry cleaning, and got my items sorted (if not all folded) last night while watching The Closer. Since I had some time before bed, I thought I’d look at my tunes and make a vacation playlist. My iPod had been acting up a little over the past week but I didn’t really give it much thought as usually a hard reset fixes things. Well when I plugged it in last night, it froze, iTunes froze, Windows told me that the drive I’d just plugged in was damaged and would I like to scan it? — uh oh. I’ve restored it three time, let it sit overnight and finally this morning it was responding, so I performed another restore and am trying to sync music to it while I’m at the office. If I get home and there’s no success, then it looks like I’ll be shopping for a new one before my trip.

Still, getting all of the laundry done last night was a good thing. I stopped at the store beforehand to pick up a few things for a quick and healthy dinner. Michael has agreed to be my healthy eating buddy, so I figure I can get started before my trip. My plan was grilled seasoned tilapia fillets and pasta over a bed of wilted baby spinach, but the store had a Panko breadcrumb coated chicken breast on sale, so the tilapia will be for another day this week. The spinach was wonderful though and took all of 5 minutes to cook, however the recipe I was adapting called for a pound of it and I know why: 9 oz. of baby spinach wilts down to perhaps 1½ or 2 servings, maybe. I pan-browned the chicken and finished it off in the oven. It all came out well and I’ll do the fish another night this week, probably with more spinach. I’m craving some collard greens, but I don’t really have the time for that during the week. Perhaps this Saturday.

urban bohemian, only 8 days until your cruise!

The Carnival website is really cute when you log in to check your reservation, it gives you a message with a days until countdown to your cruise. It hasn’t even felt like it’s really happening until I realized it’s just over a week now. I was on the phone with Michael earlier and we were both online to look at excursions and other details. Our boarding passes have our stateroom number on them, I was able to go online and see the ship’s deck plan and find where our room will be and it still feels real, yet surreal.

I’ve been on big boats before, ferries, aircraft carriers, freighters, but those were just visits or short hops. I think the first time I was on a big moving boat was when Darian and I went to Ocracoke Island. We drove the car up on it and initially I was content to just stay inside the car, I guess I was a bit freaked out by the whole process, but I did head out and take a look around and it was pretty cool. I didn’t get seasick or scared, even though I’m not a fan of heights, so I think I’m set on that front for the trip.

We chose a single excursion for each stop, heading to The Bay of Fundy at Saint John, and taking a tour in Halifax which will leave us time to explore the city and generally enjoy ourselves. It’s starting to sink in that it’s really just one big resort style vacation that happens to be on a ship. Most everything’s inclusive, but I suspect the silliest things will be charge-per-use. Michael already told me that he’s going to buy a soda pass which they call a “Fun Fountain” card because otherwise all guests are offered is iced tea and coffee, possibly not even water as it’s all bottled, and Chris has advised me to send myself some gift drinks as they may be cheaper if I bought them offline and sent them to my room than on-board. Michael’s not that much of a drinker so I don’t know how much I’ll be imbibing, but a buck’s a buck. They’ve said there’s wireless internet available, but I imagine there will be a charge for that too. We’re skipping the formal dinners because on the one hand I’m just not into that sort of things, and more frankly, I’m too fat for my suit. When I come back, I’d love to embark on a campaign to lose some of the weight I’ve packed on in recent years. If anyone wants to be my healthy eating buddy, let me know.

What I could really use input on is any cruise ship advice, what to bring, what to do, what to watch out for. Additionally, I need a recommendation for a good book and other diversions. Tomorrow’s laundry night, but I’ll be out shopping Tuesday for clothes, new pair of shades and reading material. And of course there’s the rest of the week to get the things that I’ve surely forgotten.. or think I have.

Clarification: That last paragraph was soliciting input, not comment-whoring. So comment away!!

When you really need motivation to wake up!

When the Senseo breaks down, I think I know what I’m buying to replace it, the Saeco Etienne Louis espresso coffee machine.

The cover of Etienne Louis is a steel sphere, whereas the spikes and the supports are made from polished aluminium. The removable upper half of the sphere hides the removable water tank. You can brew one or two cups of espresso.

Like the Starck ‘Rocket’ orange juicer, it’s the kind of thing you just have out on the counter, and whether you use it or not, it makes your kitchen unforgettable. With the lack of a Starbucks at the office (but not for long) my coffee consumption has pretty much flip-flopped to having more at home than at the office. Of course in my apartment, I’m still strapped for counter space, so I could never keep this stuff around anyway, but I can dream of one day owning the punk rocker of espresso makers.

on the elevator this morning…

“What a good healthy breakfast!” she said to me, noticing my tray with eggs, bacon, milk and cereal. I smiled and said “I’m trying to be good, eating a somewhat balanced breakfast instead of just having coffee…” It was at that moment I realized that the nice young woman in front of me was holding nothing more than her purse and a cup of coffee.

She said, “Gee, thanks!” half-jokingly and I backpedaled saying that I’d likely be back down myself in an hour or so for some coffee, thankful for the fact that my skin tone makes it difficult to see when I’m blushing and that it was a very short ride from that moment to my floor.

Yeah, even I’m not immune from saying crazy things to people in the morning but to my credit, I was nursing a heck of a hangover…

Balls-Out Mayer

I think the first “skin” post I had since the new look was of John Mayer on the beach. I posted it because he’s cute, of course, but mainly because when he let his hair grow long, it’s usually an untamed mop and it was nice to see it under control (more or less).

As seen above, he’s looking quite hot again as part of the new GAP ad campaign, but that’s secondary to a recent post on his blog about drug and alcohol arrests at his concert this past weekend:

In looking to the future, I hope that this will serve as a wake-up call to young fans who may be thinking about engaging in illegal activity at one of my concerts. If I happen to be walking backstage and I see any of you young men passed out drunk on a stretcher, make no mistake about it, you will come-to in front of your disappointed parents with a face full of Sharpie and the sneaking suspicion that you’ve been teabagged by one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2007.

I’m here (for you!),
John Mayer

So John, my question is, do I have to be drunk and passed out for you to, in the words of Louie from The State, “dip your balls in it?”

In the same vein comes this deleted scene from a recent popular comedy, but there was no mention of a Sharpie…

<lj-embed id="32" />

NSFW for language only. If you have headphones on, it’s all good.

Scrum of a different kind. Offside?

I needed a lighter entry to follow up the last one and this is chuckle-worthy, among other things. Towleroad featured this ad last week, and I felt it needed to be shared.

In rugby football, the offside rule prohibits players from gaining an advantage from being too far forward. — Offside (Wikipedia) With the above photo, I think “being too forward” is an understatement! Click for full-size.

I thought about putting this image behind a (more…) cut, but I figured more people have probably watched the Snickers Super Bowl ad at their office, so this couldn’t possibly be that bad. If need be, point your browser to Sports Illustrated, Maxim or Esquire to reset its orientation.

missed disasters

“Japan finds itself in crisis, with our society and culture temporarily reverting to a pre-cyberunification era,” said Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, communicating non-telekinetically for the first time in his nearly 150 years of post-cryogenic life. “Though many citizens have been limited to algorithm-based emotion detection, neutron baths, speed limits below the speed of light, and other barbaric inconveniences for over a week now, I promise we will pull through.”

Earthquake Sets Japan Back To 2147 | The Onion

On the less fake tip, I think it’s time to cull my LiveJournal default view list. I have a lot of people and communities there that should probably be moved to their own lists. I missed reading about my friend BK’s accident over the weekend because of the other things that had pushed his Saturday afternoon posting about it back a page or two. It was only not seeing him around the gulag on Monday that made me wonder where the heck he was. At his height, he’s hard to miss standing up, and at my height, I can pretty much see most everyone even when they’re sitting down, which apparently both of us were doing with pain yesterday, though my soreness was self-inflicted… well Justin-inflicted anyway.

There must be something in the air, as I’ve seen a lot of people writing about moving or removing their journals from areas that imply social network to their own domain or to other spots in the blogosphere that are less “me too!” and more “i dig what you do.” There won’t be a “mass de-friending” as seems to cause such drama on LJ, but there are some people I’ll be reading more often than others. People I’ve met in person, people I regularly talk to virtually, people whose lives I should be caught up on. There really are no set guidelines, but I think I’m at my limit of feeling that livejournal, like other social networking sites, has made the concept of friendship a little too easy.

This might not be the best time for me to do this as I feel I’m experiencing a bit of a social reversal of fortune lately. Instead of hearing “what do you want to do this weekend?” on Thurs/Fri, I hear “what did you do this weekend?” the following Monday often times to which the answer “nothing” is not an exaggeration.

Still, vacation looms on the horizon and I hope to come back refreshed and ready to close out the summer.

You splashed your water on my fire sign…

It really has been a summer of water, trips to Solomons Island, now Broomes Island and Parkers Creek and in a few weeks I’ll be on a cruise!

Yesterday Justin and I drove down to Calvert County again to show me where his parents’ place is, they live in Scientists’ Cliffs, a really cute community overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. On our way down, we stopped at Stoney’s Seafood House. Justin’s been talking about their crab cakes for over a month now and telling me that they would ruin me for crab cakes for the rest of my life. He may be right. These things were huge, and I had to hunt to find filler, perfectly golden, absolutely delicious, we could have probably been full on those alone, but he also ordered The Steamer. So much shellfish, I was ready to burst, but it was all so good! As the pictures show, we tore through it all handily enough, but we were feeling it for the next few hours. If there’s a seafood restaurant like that a bit closer to home, I am so there.

His parents’ place is adorable, not too large, with a deck and backyard about 30 feet back from the cliffs overlooking the bay. Justin and I walked down to the beach area and got out their kayak where we paddled to where Parkers Creeklets out into the Chesapeake to look for shark’s teeth, we only found 2, one tiny one and a nice looking one, but honestly the most memorable thing about that was the kayaking. He told me that Parker’s Creek could only be reached by water (I think he made that up just to get me kayaking) and his parents have a 2-person “fun” kayak that we took out into the bay.

I had given him very fair warning that I am not that athletic. The potential is there, sure, but it’s not exercised very often — pun completely intended. Needless to say it was going to be a rough ride out there, plus the winds were up, water was very choppy and I’d never been in a kayak before, let alone one made for 2 people. We had our life vests and our paddles and we set off — our approximate route. It took me quite some time to get my balance and the waves were not kind. We tipped over more than a few times… that is I tipped us over because I kept overcompensating for the motion of the waves, but it’s not easy! We got there eventually, I got stung a few times by jellyfish… another reason I warned him against this. I don’t fear jellyfish, I respect them, if they’re swimming, I stay out of the pool. And they were all over, not packed in the water, but they were there, and mostly little ones, so on one or more of our dumpings into the bay, I got tagged a few times, but the stinging feeling went away once I got dry. Still there were times that I could see them in the water and on the waves and it took a lot of focus not to completely freak out and dump us in again.

Oh and a special note to the bay: I hope you enjoy the Kenneth Cole sunglasses that now rest somewhere in your sandy depths. I’m coming for a return visit sometime in the future and I’d like them back, please.

Our return trip was with the wind and the water had calmed down considerably, so I would like some props for the fact that I didn’t tip us over, not even once, on the way back. But I gotta admit, I was exhausted. Even today my arms hurt, my legs hurt, I think I have blisters from the paddles (which Justin whacked me with when he was putting them back in the boatshed) and my back is still a little sore, but truth be told, it was a lot of fun. The water was very warm, and for the most part it was shallow enough to touch bottom even as far out as we got, so being tipped over wasn’t much more than a slight, if not hilarious, inconvenience.

We finished off the day with an extended soak in the hot tub on his parents’ deck before hitting the road back to DC. I swear if they ever need someone to housesit, I’d gladly take off a week or so to look after the place! Getting back home was a bit of a chore as something happened on MD Rte 4 around Dunkirk and traffic was halted, lanes closed, etc. When we got nearer to turn around and find another way home, we saw there was a big helicopter in the middle of the road, but I couldn’t see any signs of an accident. We headed over to Waldorf and got to DC from there. Back at my place we enjoyed some much deserved Mandarin Martinis and watched Wedding Crashers which, while predictable in spots, was still fun. I had no idea Will Ferrel made a cameo, and Vince Vaughn was… Vince Vaughn, same as any movie he’s in.

I’m still sore, but I got some cleaning done in the apartment today and much as I’d like to hit the store and make a big dinner, I think I’ll end up just ordering a pizza and resting up for the work week.

How geeky are we?

One of my blog buddies, Shindo, got his hands on the iPhone and wrote about his brief experience playing around with it. I’ve had my hands on one as well, but I was with 2 other people, and it was late so my visit was more for the “I wanna touch it!” than really checking out its capabilities. What’s funny is that he pulled up Chris and my blogs on the device, as well as his own — I do the same thing! When I got the Opera browser working on my Wii, the first site I looked at was my own, then Shindo, then Chris. (I didn’t take pictures tho)

Two friends, Gregory and Fredo, both have iPhones, and I do want one, I could certainly afford one but I’m still hesitant and not sure why. If my brother comes through on his offer that’ll be great, but I still haven’t been pushed over the edge into buying one for myself yet.

And on the other side of the geek scale, I was recently reminded how much I want the triple set of these Amco enameled citrus squeezers. I’ve been cleaning out kitchen drawers and cabinets and shelves and I think that these might work as a nice reward for my efforts. From what I see online, reviews are mixed, but I could get the lot of them for about $30. I saw an ad for a new Metrokane citrus juicer (at $100!!) and realized that as pretty as that is, I’m much more low tech and the more things I can keep off the counter, the better. It also led me to an online magazine, Appliancist, which will probably get me into even more trouble now.

Unfortunately accurate

“I’m tired of pressing ‘1′ for English” on the phone.

Woodbridge resident Chris King | Pr. William Passes Resolution Targeting Illegal Immigration

A simple statement, but all too telling of one of the feelings at the heart of this matter. I am still reading back over news stories in my free time as the job kinda has me working my tail off during the day and I hate watching tv news in the evenings. I normally depend on IMs from friends to keep me somewhat aware of what’s going on. Justin mentioned this a day or two ago, but I saw this line in a DCist story about immigration and it stuck with me. It reminded me of when Florida amended their state constitution to make English the official state language.

It just seems so close-minded and not even racist but generally xenophobic, “You’re not like us, so we don’t want you here.” I suspect in another month, if that long, all the news outlets will be doing stories about DWH (Driving While Hispanic) in Prince William Cty.

RR drops some knowledge on ya…

My friends know that I’ll say “learn to cook” over “go out to eat” any day, but who knew that Rachael Ray and I were of the same opinion on this?

<lj-embed id="30" />

Oh yeah, and the Füri knives she lent her name to? Those muthafugga’s can pretty much cut through time.

sick, yet productive…

I did call out from work with tummy issues this morning. Whether those were due to food or to stress or something else, I can’t say, but I was fairly productive today. I know the kitchen needs a lot of work. I have a galley kitchen and it’s tight, I have a lot of kitchen gadgets as well as unnecessary kitchen items, so I took a lot of plastic bags for trash and attacked ½ the kitchen today when I was feeling better. Took some pictures of the results, I’m pleased with my progress but there’s still another side of the kitchen to take care of. Thankfully that side is occupied by the breadmaker, microwave and knife block, so there isn’t much free room, but it would be nice to have clean counter space for my … kitchen experiments.

Thankfully I had my IM friends to keep me company throughout the day, and as a treat to myself and to celebrate finding my good martini glasses I went out to get cosmopolitan ingredients, so now I’m happily buzzed and just about ready for bed.

“…he’s my hero”

A little “kids say the most enlightened things” moment from John Barrowman:

I was doing another kind of signing thing at a press conference where I was signing autographs and a little boy came up to me with his father. The father said do you want Captain Jack’s autograph? The little boy [said] “Oh, yes, Daddy. I don’t care if he likes boys or girls, he’s my hero.”

John Barrowman Rocks the TCA House | via Queerty

I have to wonder if there’s a bit more to the story than that, but still a really cute moment.

Close a door, open a window

Apparently Isaiah is coming back to television, thankfully not in a FOX Special titled, “If I Said It…” Unfortunately it’s going to be on a show that I’m actually interested in seeing — NBC’s Bionic Woman remake.

Katherine Pope, president of NBC’s Universal Media Studios, says that despite the public baggage, Washington is “a brilliant actor,” and she believes viewers will re-embrace him. “I think people watch characters on TV, not personalities” in the news, she says.

Washington to return to network TV

Maybe Katee can channel a little bit of Starbuck and kick his ass on the set when he steps out of line.

Justin and I saw the new Harry Potter film this weekend. It was a little strange, both seeing a HP film opening weekend and not having to wait in a bank style line to get into the theater. I was pretty sure the Harry Potter curse was in effect when the opening commercials and Regal First Look had no sound, but it was fixed just in time for me to miss hearing The Simpsons movie trailer. And from then on the film went without a hitch.

I liked the movie, but it’s very very British, shades of 1984 and V for Vendetta. Themes of establishment, propaganda, draconian measures to enforce order, resistance and an underground are very clear. I suppose it was a long movie, but it didn’t feel like one (though I didn’t have to go to the bathroom at all, so that’s probably why I took no notice of time passing), we went for the 9:40p show and didn’t get out until well after midnight. I haven’t read any of Rowling’s books, so I don’t know what was changed, condensed or cut to get it on the big screen but I enjoyed it. Imelda Staunton was delicious as Dolores Umbridge, and the feel of the movie was much darker than the last, which I suppose is a trend considering some information alluded to in the film (and books, I assume). The only letdown was that there are still no principal characters of color riding in the Mystery Machine. There are faces in the background, sure, and there were two getting a little screen time, but they were both used as devices, Kingsley to look mystical and exotic (and deliver a “cool black guy” line) and Cho to play the Julia to Harry’s Winston Smith.

I’m hoping to get out to see Transformers soon.
