Has Guelph Transit implemented the user ID card-swipe system, yet? I heard that they were going to test it over the summer to try and get rid of any problems before September. |

Hi Guelph,
Where could I buy a pet rat in this city? I know there was a psyc class a while ago that used to train rats and they give them away.... but that doesn't happen anymore (which is probably good!). Does anyone know?
Thank you :) |

| | RICK ROLL'D | ] | Hey guys, just wondering, how hard/easy is it to get into a work-study position? Like, to be in "financial need." Do you have to be "omg I have $0.01 in my bank account" poor?
Basically, I need to get a job because I don't think OSAP is going to be giving me enough to get through the year. I'm not making as much as I thought I would this summer, so I need a job during fall 08 to cover my food expenses and a bit of bills (I'm living off campus). Do they take that into account when they evaluate you?
thanks ♥ |

| ROOM UP FOR GRABS |
[Jul. 10th, 2008|12:27 am] |
Hey guys
Just thought I'd post here before putting it up on the cannon. We have one room available in our place. Our roommate is (unfortunately) moving in with her boyfriend.
It's $390 plus, in the new complex of townhouses on Gordon (1155/Gordon Gates complex). The place is pretty nice and only 2.5 years new - we are the first tenants. Right now we have one tiny cat named Ella, but we're open to inviting another cat if you have one.
About us: 3 females going into fourth year. We're looking for someone (male or female) who is clean, and studies but still has fun and is out-going...
Two of us have cars, so rides are always a perk.
Email hmille01@uoguelph.ca if you're interested or have any questions. |

| OSAP & Koodo reception |
[Jul. 4th, 2008|01:51 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | happy | ] | Got a couple questions for everyone:
1. Okay, stupid question. Those OSAP sheets that you and your parents are supposed to sign and return to the university, do you just put them in an envelope drop them off at a post office? Man, I cannot remember for the life of me what I did with those last year.
2. Now for the Koodo part. I'm thinking of switching from Fido Prepaid to Koodo mobile. I know that Koodo is part of Telus, so are there any Telus and Koodo users here, and what's the reception like in Guelph? Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong, but because of the phone types can koodo/telus phones be used on Bell networks, as well?
thanks a bunch =] |

| New Transit Schedules Starting July 6 |
[Jun. 27th, 2008|05:04 pm] |
From the City of Guelph Website:
"The new 20 minute service frequency will run Monday to Friday, from 5:40 a.m. until 7 p.m. Routes operating out of St. George's Square, will now arrive in the Square on the hour, and every 20 and 40 minutes after the hour. After 7 p.m., these routes will run on a 30 minute frequency."
Buses that will run on this schedule include everything but the 55 and the 70A and 70B. Saturdays and Sundays (and holidays) these routes will run every 30 minutes. Of course, this comes with a 25 cent increase to fares... |

Hello! This post is directed at an Guelph cat owners:
Our little Meatball has two injuries on the pads of his feet. Not the main pads that contact the ground, but the little sort of... elbow pads. A little higher up. I don't know how he managed to injure both, but it any case, he's got two cuts, one on each. One looks much worse than the other, but neither looks infected. Just a little scabby.
We care about him of course, and we'll seek whatever medical attention he'll need, but we're wondering if anyone could ballpark what the cost of visiting a vet in Guelph would be for this kind of situation? Does anyone have experience with that cat clinic on Gordon? Any help would be appreciated. |

To any prospective first-years reading this community: just a quick reminder that today's the last day to submit your OSAP application online if you want to be considered for the Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship.
My little brother was so distracted with exams that he almost missed it, so I thought I'd give any of you out there a head's up. |

| Complain...now! |
[Jun. 20th, 2008|01:28 pm] |
Alright. This isn't one of the happier posts, but I was wondering who you would "complain" or talk to when you have disagreements with DE policy in terms of structure and denying some rights for a proper education?
The thing is, there are several DE courses which I am taking that strictly restrict any students from seeing their right or wrong answers written on tests and quizzes even if the quiz/test period is over. The mark you get is the mark you get. If you do get questions wrong, you are denied access to the quiz to see why you got something wrong. The right answer will never be known, let alone the question to which you answered wrongly.
Their policy to this is that it prevents students from cheating. Not seeing how you got something wrong prevents cheating. (Why was there an exam bank then?)
If this is the case, what's the point in paying for my education through DE? It's more expensive than regular tuition with the resource fee, and I don't even learn from my mistakes. I might as well not write the final; I'll only bring what I think is correct to the exam while what I think is probably completely wrong. Does this not spell failure?
In the position of student, this is completely unfair! |

| Course Selection... |
[Jun. 15th, 2008|04:10 pm] |
So I'm trying to help out my brother, who is about to enter first year studying History. I dont get any choice in my courses, so this whole 'take whatever you want thing' is so odd to me. The guide says to only take 1000 level courses. In my head, it makes sense to take HIST*2100 in his first semester, as well as the first year HIST course. HIST*2100 is only offered in the fall, and then he could take other history classes in the second semester or whatever. So, for the actual question... when they say its recommended to take only 1000 level courses... how serious are they being? |

| Guelph police, and court |
[Jun. 14th, 2008|08:41 pm] |
I just wanted to know if anyone had any encounters with Guelph police specifically fighting traffic tickets in court?
My driving record of 6 years was completely clean until two incidents this week which is nuts. One I'm pleading innocent (long story short - I was volunteering with a behaviour issues kid from Children's Aid who was yelling obscenities out the window and got charged with a no seatbelt thing), the other less severe charge (got into a car accident going 10km/hr during slow traffic - I'm charged with careless driving - the only thing more severe than that is impaired driving). I feel like Guelph cops are gestapo, or it's just my bad luck or something.
Anyone have experience with them and if they show up to court, or what the court procedure is like, etc? I can give the cops names...
I just have never done any of this before. |

| Drop-in centres/Activities for kids |
[Jun. 9th, 2008|08:20 pm] |
I volunteer with a 9 year old boy that had some mental health issues, and am looking for activities to do in the community with him. His parents and social worker would like me to "socialize him" so something that is organized and with other children would be great, but I'm open to any ideas of things to do in the community.
I took him canoeing on Speed River and he loved it.
Does anyone know of some kind of drop-in centre or other activities to do in the community in Guelph?
I've done some research but haven't had much luck (and some places I can't get a hold of).
Thanks :)
(P.S. Also if anyone else volunteers/works with kids we could do something together! Drop me a line) |

| Major Question |
[Jun. 9th, 2008|11:48 am] |
|
I am entering second year in the fall and I am feeling like I need to narrow down my choice of major a little more. I have a couple areas of interest in the BA program, and the clock is ever ticking on narrowing down my major, I don't want to do any extra semesters that I don't have to.
Okay, so my big passion in life is basically studio art. I'm wondering, is there anyone in studio who can tell me why they chose to specialize in studio art? Are there any advantages to having a studio art major as opposed to a minor?
Anthropology is another consideration of mine. I have been told by people in the sciences that there is no point in doing a BA in anthropology, since you aren't really qualified to do anything except continue education and become a researcher/professor. Is this true? I don't want to be a full-time student.
Spanish is my other choice. I really want to learn the language, however I know that immersion in a spanish speaking ocuntry may be a better way to learn. Are there career opportunities for people with a Spanish BA? How much more education do you need to do things like translate?
I am young and don't know what I'm getting into, I just want to pick the BA major that will be most advantageous for me career-wise and in life-learning. I could see myself doing a masters in journalism or media, or taking some more applied college courses after I finish the BA once I have figured out what I want to do as a job. Anyways, talk to me, any advice you can give is great, I find other people's opinions are the best way for me to learn. |
