Last Days in DC [Jan. 24th, 2005|10:17 pm]
Nick here again. Finally have the time to update the site. Sunday morning started with the departure of group one for their earlier flight. The second group boarded the bus at about 10:00 to do some more sightseeing. It was about that time that we learned that our 8:00pm flight was canceled. Dr. Neidlinger began by calling the airline and travel agency to figure out what we were going to do.

In the mean time, we continued our tour starting with the Kennedy Center. We didn't get to see the theaters, but were able to tour the entrance halls and foyer.

The next stop for the bus was the Lincoln and war memorials. Although I saw these yesterday, many on the second bus did not, and because of the flight situation, it was best that the group stay together in the event we got an earlier flight out of Washington. It as still fun, and visibility of the monuments was improved without the blowing snow.

Even though we were done with the parade, some of the girls, including Dr. Neidlinger, decided to practice their chair step at the Lincoln Memorial.

Once we were through there, we visited the White House and were able to see the reviewing stand we had marched past only a few days before.

The group returned to the Smithsonian and spend more time at the museums. At this point, it was clear that we would be spending another night, but we didn't know where. Because of this, the group was able to split up for a couple hours before heading for a yet undecided hotel.

Mike Lovejoy and I walked over to the National Archives to see the original Declaration of Independence and Constitution. After getting through security, we got to see the documents and looked at a couple of exhibits.

We spent the rest of the time at the American, which after the lines at the archives, wasn't much.

At 3:30, we boarded the bus, driving by Embassy Row and the national Cathedral before riding to Baltimore, where we would spend the night before catching a flight back to Omaha.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we worked out the flight details, which split us into two flights departing the next morning. At this point, we were feeling fed up with the situation, working out details nearly eight hours after the problem was discovered.

We ordered pizza at the hotel and the walked around Baltimore. It was cold, but we still had a good time.

We stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe, buying the customary t-shirts before walking back to the hotel.

In order to catch the first flight, we needed to get up at 4:00AM. The flight departed at 6:55, soaring from Baltimore at sunrise.

We ran into delays at Midway, but finally were in sight of home, our families waiting to greet us.

Although the flight cancellation did set me behind regarding homework and the like, I did enjoy having the extra time in Baltimore. This trip is certainly an experience I will remember the rest of my life. Now for an attempt to catch up on much needed sleep. Later

Home at Last [Jan. 24th, 2005|02:35 pm]
Finally arrived at Omaha at 11:20 this morning. Mow the hard part: Making up all the homework I've missed. Don 't worry, I still have two days worth of pictures to load, but school work must come first.

Stranded in Baltimore [Jan. 23rd, 2005|06:13 pm]
I'll keep it short for now, but group 2 is currently spending the night in Baltimore. The plan is to take the first two flights to Omaha. The first flight leaves at 6:55 and will arrive at 10:55. The flight number is 276.

The second flight leaves at 10:45am and arrives at 1:40pm. This is flight 405

Touring DC: Day 2 [Jan. 22nd, 2005|09:57 pm]
Nick here once again to provide you with a daily update. We started the morning together at Union Station. It had already started to snow when we left the hotel.

After a brief amount of looking around at the station, a small group of us took the subway to the Marine Memorial near Arlington cemetary. Trumpet Brian Wigger was able to provide the group with a lot of information regarding the memorial.

AFter the Iwo Jima memorial, we took the subway back to DC and walked toward the Lincoln Memorial. On the way, we got a little lost and asked one of the local residents, who turned out to be a tuba player from Ohio. With his help we made it to the monument and the other memorials. For me, the snow enhanced the solemnity of these.

After seeing these, our group split up, the others wanting to hit the museums, as it was quite cold outside. The rest of us briefly visited the World War II memorial before moving on.

We were hoping to see the White House, but by then the snow was so bad that I could barley see the Washington monument, even though I was just across the street.

Braving the snow, our next stop was the Air and Space Museum. I got in as much of the museum as I could while the others waited in line for the simulator.

Sarah and I spent the remainder of the day touring the Natural History museum while the others toured the National archives.

We then met up with the rest of the band and went to dinner. At the dinner The band, led by K.J Harnack and Alison Malcolm, presented Dr. Neildlinger with a DC gift pack, including a poster that will be signed by every member of the band.

We then returned to the hotel to relax. One more day to go.

Touring DC [Jan. 21st, 2005|09:12 pm]
Nick here to fill you in on day three. Today was a fun day. All we had to do was tour Washington. The day started out with a visit to Senator Hagel's office. We had our picture taken with the senator, and had a little bit of time to talk to the senator and take a couple of pictures.

Dr. Neidlinger then gave the senator a marching mavs t-shirt

We then sang the fight song for the Nebraska Society's annual breakfast.

Before and after out time with the senator, we had some time to walk around the capitol and take in the sites. A truck driver was even nice enough to stand on his flatbed for a group picture.

Our next stop was Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. There were a lot of people there, so we had to wait in line, we got to see the house but didn't have time to see everything. Here's a picture of a few of us outside the house (I'm on the left).

We grabbed a quick bit to eat before heading over to Arlington cemetery. By then, it was getting pretty cold outside. Our first stop was Kennedy's grave and the eternal flame.

After that we started toward the tomb of the unknown soldier. While waiting for the changing of the guard we visited the plaques honoring the two shuttles , Challenger and Columbia. Being a science fiction fan, this was an important stop for me.

We then wittnessed the changing of the guard in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier. This picture shows one of the guards with Mellophone April Bishop in the background.

We then boarded the bus and went to the Reagan Center for dinner. This picture, taken by Kelly Barth show the inside of the building (with a creative touch.)

After dinner we went to see the Jefferson and Roosevelt memorials, by then it was quite cold, but I had a good time nonetheless, taking as many pictures as I could before freezing. Here are a couple for you.

Once we were done for the day, we took some time to warm up and relax.

Thats all for now. Tomorrow, its off to the Smithsonian, and likely a snow covered DC.
