For Anecdote told by Warren Ellis: The first time I went to Iceland I spoke at the university there, had a fantastic time. And they said ‘Do you by any chance know Alan Moore? We’d love to have him as a followup visit to you.’ Eyeballs to entrails, love. Eyeballs to entrails. ETA: it's "Thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes. I thought it was there for good, so I never tried." Leonard Cohen, Famous Blue Raincoat. I LOVE this lyric. |

| I want a new default icon. This one has served me well for a long time, probably longer than any I've used in the past. It's one of my favorite icons, and I'm sure that plenty of people identify it with me, or the other way around. Still, I feel the need for a new one, but I can't make it because have no idea what I want :( | ||||

I know that going through all the manifestos posted by the candidates can be a time consuming drag, but I just did exactly that. Now, I don't know anything about the politics of LJ politics, so my choices may not be strategically wise, but I figure that things can change very quickly when it comes to voting on LJ, so I might as well just go with the people whose views I endorse and let the chips fall where they may. For those of you who may not have the time or energy to screen all the candidates, I personally suggest you read what In my opinion, if you only read two nominees' posts, let those two be sollitaire's and rm's (also, this is rm's initial nomination post). If you're interested, you can check out all the nominees and vote in |

So I got sucked into checking out SGA by the multitude of amusing McKay and Sheppard icons and the relatively sane fandom, as far as fandoms go (hey, I come from BtVS/AtS; I'm used to at least Supernatural-level Crack!Fandom). Anyway, it took me maybe a week and change to reach the latest SGA episode, and now I'm stuck. I remember years ago I'd catch the occasional SG1 episode, but it never caught my interest, despite my predictable MacGyver childhood crush. On the other hand, I'm an insane completist fangirl, and must have my mythology straight, so now I must resort to the omniscient powers of Fandom. Poll #1135704 SG1: Yea or Nay? Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: Friends I should... Watch all 10 seasons of SG1, of course. Avoid SG1 at all cost, for it is teh ev0l Watch only certain key episodes that shall be detailed in comments Watch only one particular season that shall be detailed in comments Watch straight through season 10, but start at a point that shall be detailed in comments Finally, I should get me some SGA icons, Y/Y? |

ETA: "just because someone/something does/thinks/says/is X, it doesn't give you the right to say/do/think/be Y" No, dipshit, I had that right to begin with. Let me explain. The default is that we have the right to do whatever the fuck we want. Our right to do whatever the fuck we want is sometimes restricted by law (too often, IMO). We do not require special dispensation to do whatever the fuck we want, however immature, silly, distasteful, disgusting, disrespectful, obnoxious, unholy, morally wrong, offensive, etc., you may find it to be. Whoever wants to stop us doing whatever the fuck we want is the one who needs to go and prove in a court of law that whatever the fuck it is we're doing is in violation of some existing law, or, alternatively, attempt to get whatever the fuck it is we're doing outlawed, and then go prove it in a court of law. Beyond that, you're welcome to ask nicely, and we're welcome to oblige you, tell you to fuck off, or anything in between. Why do people find it so difficult to grasp this simple concept? "Saving Our Planet" Earth does not require saving. It's been here long before any of the current species occupying it have evolved, and it will still be here long after all the current species occupying it are extinct. Our planet is doing fine, thankyouverymuch, and will likely continue to do so till our sun exhausts its fuel, expands into a rad giant, and blows it up in the process. What some people are actually worried about are the living conditions on planet earth, which may be a legitimate concern, depending on your POV, but that's not the same as being concerned for the fate of the planet, over which we have no control whatsoever. I take issue with the panic over living conditions on earth as well, but that's another pet peeve altogether. "The Human Race" Humans are not a race. Humans are a species. And as far as genetic variation in Homo sapiens is concerned, we're not even diverse enough to have sub-species (i.e. races). Even the traditional classification of the human species into Mongoloid, Negroid, Caucasoid and Australoid is not actually a division into human races, but as we learn more about the human genome, a growingly useless and outdated forensic anthropology tool. Racism is a very real social issue, but it is not grounded in biology, and as we move further and further away from fact and into social trends, the use of the word race is becoming increasingly ludicrous, with idiots who insist that a variety of ethnicities, nationalities, social identities, and even religions, are "races" (e.g. Hispanics, Jews). The US government, for instance, allows me to choose (and instructs me to check one only, or not at all) in various official forms, between, and I quote: "race/ethnic description: 1. Asian, Asian American or Pacific Islander 2. Hispanic 3. Black (not Hispanic) 4. North American Indian or Alaskan native 5. White (not Hispanic)" I have a feeling that almost anyone outside the US reading this would be as dumbfounded as I was when encountering this ridiculous list for the first time, though I may be wrong. Cancer Societies I have a long and painful personal connection with cancer (not to mention genetic). I have donated a lot of money to Cancer Societies over the years. I was under the mistaken impression that their purpose was to help fund cancer research, as well as helping to provide better care for cancer patients and in some cases their loved one, and possibly informing the general public regarding risk factors, early detection, and so forth. As it turns out, some cancer societies have taken it upon themselves to lobby for anti-smoking legislation instead, at which point they've lost my support, financial and otherwise. Anyone who does things that hurt me (financially or otherwise) "for my own good" deserves nothing but strict opposition and contempt. Two other organizations who fall under my personal WTF category are PETA and Green Peace. The former never got my money or my support, and never will, the latter lost both when I saw my money financing political agendas I do not subscribe to, but I'm too tired to go into details at this point. And now, a short list of some of my views not mentioned above: - I believe that doctors should be allowed to give terminal patients morphine and allow them to die in peace. - I believe that however you may personally feel about abortion, as long as you don't think that access to abortion (or birth control, for that matter) should be restricted by governments, you're pro-choice, and those who do want to legislate this issue are not "pro-life" but anti-choice. - I am in favor of animal testing in medical research. - I think that those of us who want to take full advantage of our omnivorous nature should not be harassed for doing so, and I don't think that either this point or the previous one are in contradiction to my lifelong love of my pets in particular or my objections to cruelty to animals in general. - I think that the expensive, draconian and perhaps most importantly, ineffectual "War on Drugs" needs to end. - I think that pornography is not inherently misogynistic. - I believe that in order to stop the horrors of sexual slavery and forced prostitution, prostitution must first be made legal. - I believe that governments should be only as big and as powerful as is strictly necessary to make sure that essential services are available to all its citizens and to help us protect our bodies and our property from crime, that laws should be limited to those necessary to allow governments to perform these functions, and that government should stay the fuck away from anything to do with morals, religion, and anything people choose to do to their own bodies. - I subscribe to the Jewish view of concentric circles of charitable responsibility. - I believe that there is no such thing as bad words. - I believe that there is no form of sex that is morally wrong. In fact, I don't believe that morality and sex have anything to do with each other whatsoever. - I think I've just declared this a Defriend |

As I've learned, and in turn notified you, the Jewish Agenda™ is now officially to conquer the world with hotness. As I mentioned previously, I've found that The Hotness of Jews is of such magnitude and scope, that one picspam cannot be enough, and so I am limiting myself to Israeli Jews, as well as spreading the hot across several (annotated) picspam entries. This is the second one, and it begins with a history lesson (of hotness!), moves on to celebrate ( NSFW or for dial-up ) Happy holidays!

Nine days ago, Since then, I've been working on my own contribution to this noble cause, in the form of my own personal picspam. I have, however, found that The Hotness of Jews is of such magnitude and scope, that one picspam will not be enough, and so I've decided to A. limit myself to Israeli Jews, and B., spread the hot across several (annotated) picspam entries. This is the first one, and it begins with the inevitable, yet always apt, Tits and Ass. ( Highly unlikely to be SFW, and definitely not dial-up friendly... ) Finally, I would like to end this first installment with a modest gift for ![]() Upcoming installments will include the sultry and the slender, the classically pretty and the oddly alluring, the smokers, the kinky, the actors, the players, the redheads, and much much more. And yes, I am willing to take requests. |

So today Katchoo wakes me up, as cats do. I spend a little time with him in bed. I want to say it isn't nearly as kinky as I made it sound, but then he does tend to shove his huge furry balls in my face, so I'm not that sure anymore. I get up, go downstairs, hubby's not home. I check my watch, it tells me it's Saturday, noonish. I give him a call. He picks up saying 'mazal tov!' to which I reply, 'um...' as I have no idea WTF he's congratulating me for. He asks me to check the date. I look at my watch again. It's a handy little fucker, which is why I've had the same model for maybe 8 years, despite it being out of production and impossible to get a new strap for, but I digress. I say it's the 24th. He asks which month. Okay, November. November 24th. HA! Today's our 13th wedding anniversary! Now I must leave as I have to receive our anniversary gifts. He bought three gifts; one for me, one for him, and one for us. And apparently the bag is for Katchoo. Best.Husband.Ever. |

I've got this 30 second clip from Never Mind the Buzzcocks series 3, featuring Mark Lamarr, Sean Hughes, Mani, and Lemmy (from Motörhead). Sean tells Mark that Mani's got a present for Lemmy. Mani gets up and presents Lemmy with his present, saying something unintelligible in the process. He sits back down, and Mark asks him what it's for, to which Mani replies something equally unintelligible. After watching this a couple dozen times, I've managed to get a bunch of random words worked out, but for the pure hell of it, I'd really appreciate it if you could transcribe whatever the fuck it is that Mani's saying in this clip. This 5MB file is hosted on one of my sites; if you're willing to play, please right click, save as... I really want to hear what the Brits have to say, but anyone is welcome to play my little game of Pin the Dialect! |

It took Stephen Fry starting to blog (or blessay, as he calls it, though technically he uses it as a noun, not a verb), but I am now officially no longer an LJ Syndicated Feed virgin. Venturing outside the LJ community and into the blogosphere at large has inspired me to share with one and all the fact that I've brushed my hair today. While I'm here, a s00per sekkrit message I've been meaning to send to my favorite cunt of all: DO NOT disappear into your Hobbit Hole. unfilthy has spoken. 'nuff said. Finally, an entirely unsecret message of MAZAL TOV to my favorite bonbon eating haus frau BNF & other half of our one whole functioning body, Lisa. LOVE! |

Earlier today we got a call from a vet in Badhoevedorp telling us she had Katchoo. Now, let me just back up a bit; 9 days ago Katchoo jumped out the window for the first time. That same night he disappeared. Katchoo is a 4-5 month old male cat, not yet castrated (he's too young to go under general anesthesia), still no collar (we tried, but it was one of those annoying "safety" collars that he just snapped off immediately, and we were in no hurry to get a proper one since he was so small). Since then, we've gone door to door talking to the neighbors and getting into their back yards to look for him (I actually had an entire conversation with an elderly Dutch woman with hearing problems, IN DUTCH, and managed to communicate the entire situation to her, get in her back yard, learn about the dogs she used to have and how she had a fence put in to avoid them getting to the butcher's down the street, and get her sympathies regarding how difficult Dutch can be; go me!), we walked around calling him and tempting him with food, we've printed out fliers and stuck them in mailboxes all around the area, and put some up in strategic locations such as the post office, bus stops, shops, etc., we took out an ad in the local paper, we notified every single vet in Haarlem, we notified the animal ambulances in and around Haarlem, we notified all the animal rescue and shelters in and around Haarlem, and we posted his details and description on the net. Basically, we covered every base we could think of, under the assumption that being a kitten, even if he'd gone beyond our block, or beyond our neighborhood, he was still somewhere around the city center, and if he'd gone beyond that, we still had the entire city and surrounding area covered. Katchoo, however, managed to get to a town that is ~12 kilometers/8 miles from where we live, as the crow flies. He had to go through miles of fields and roads and canals to get there, not to mention half of Haarlem, in a single week. He was found there two days ago, meowing in a couple's back yard. They took him in and fed him, took his picture, and basically did, in their area, exactly what we'd done in ours. The two towns, however, are so far apart, that there was no overlap between the animal rescue people in their area and ours, so neither of us got any response. Finally, today, they took him to a local vet, who scanned him, found his chip, and called us immediately. ( visual aid ) He's home now. He has a couple of battle scars, seemingly from a single encounter with a larger cat who put him in his place by giving him a proper scratch across the face, but nothing really serious. The wounds are healing and by now look more like scars than wounds, and nothing's been infected. The vet said he's absolutely fine. He's still the same old Katchoo we've come to know and love, be it a slightly more exhausted version. At the vet's, he basically jumped into his box the second he could get away and he seems to be very happy to be back home with us, though I doubt very much that he could possibly be happier than we are. The lovely couple who found him and cared for him refused any monetary reward, so hubby's cooking for them tomorrow, and he's gonna go over there and bring them a nice selection of food with freshly baked bread and some good wine to show our appreciation. |

So, Tori gave us just under two and a half hours of music, including two encores. She came on stage as Pip (one of the American Doll Posse characters), black hair and all. A few songs later she changed into Tori, orange hair and all, and stayed that way. ( Pics of Pip and Tori characters under the cut ) From her back catalogue, she performed Precious Things, Winter, Tear in Your Hand, God, Cornflake Girl, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Hey Jupiter, Doughnut Song, Liquid Diamonds, Bliss, Spring Haze, (the slightly obscure) Flying Dutchman, and there was a Professional Widow remix during the change from Pip to Tori. From American Doll Posse she performed Big Wheel, Bouncing off Clouds, Teenage Hustling, Fat Slut, Code Red, Body and Soul, and a few more I can't remember because I don't know the new album by heart yet, as I do the older ones, so I only remember the ones that stuck in my head. She also did two improvs, one of them particularly entertaining, discussing her new piano having a fight with her organ and wearing patches, falling off her stool, smoking weed and drinking wine but not beer, etc. The sound was incredible, the venue large enough but not too large (and air conditioned, which, thank God), and whoever did the lighting design for the show was a genius. One of the best lighting designs I've ever seen in this type of concert, if not the best. The band that opened for her gave a 30 minute set which was nice but ultimately rather boring musically, so Guy and I sat on the floor and played games on our cell phones, preserving our energy for the actual show. We waited after the show as instructed by That's about it, other than to say I love that we're still allowed to smoke during concerts in The Netherlands, that if I had the money, I'd catch this tour again in Germany, and that I hope ETA: I forgot to mention that she had a drummer, a bassist, and a guitarist in various combinations throughout the evening backing her up. |

The first time I actually saw an Andy Warhol canvas in person, I was dumbstruck. God (and anyone who's read any part of this journal) knows that this is a rare event indeed. The thing is, I'd always enjoyed his work, but I was never a big fan. After all, it's pop art, and the things he's done have been reproduced and parodied so often, I think that I have become rather impervious to his work, and I strongly suspect I'm not alone in this. I think it's true for most pop art, but Andy Warhol's work in particular is so iconic and so deeply ingrained into western culture that he and his art are perhaps easier to dismiss. It's this feeling of been-there-seen-that-and-a-bag-of-chips, It was a personal Copernican revolution of art. I call it that because, as opposed to the huge amount of art I've discovered over the years by simply going to galleries, exhibitions and museums, acquainting myself with things that were new to me, in Warhol's case I was under the impression that I was already familiar with the art I was about to see. They were the same images, but my entire perspective on what they actually were had changed. This happened many years ago. Yesterday, I was reminded of it, after seeing Tori Amos in concert. As opposed to the attitude of lax approval I had toward Warhol, I've always adored Tori Amos. I fell in love with her years ago, and I've considered her a musical prodigy ever since I actually sat down to listen to one of her albums for the first time. I've been buying her albums as they come out ever since, as well as any single or EP I can get my hands on (and can afford - Tori fandom is rabid - prices of her EPs never go down, and there are always several different releases for each one, so they become rare very quickly), as well as bootlegs, so I think it wasn't unreasonable of me to believe that I knew her music, and what it was about (as much as anyone can understand her brain). I went to the concert expecting a wonderful show from a beloved musician. I came out with an entirely new and unexpected perspective on her entire back catalogue. I'm still in the process of digesting it all, so I don't have all the aspects worked out in my head yet. Which brings me back to Warhol; seeing his work up close caused my first internal Copernican revolution. Seeing Tori Amos on stage caused the second. Sit back and watch as I rearrange my solar system. |

I've compiled this list because I felt the need to sort through the various concerns and issues raised by LJ/6A's recent words and actions, and writing things down is the only way I know to sort through the piles of information swimming around in my head. I originally posted it as a comment (actually two, as it was too long) to one of LJ's recent news announcements, but with 4998 other comments, and no ability to edit my thoughts, I figured I might as well post it to my journal as well, and possibly get feedback from my friends in case I've missed something (or add links and quotes as needed). ( Questions directed to TPTB, cut to spare excessive flist scrolling ) I'm a woman, and a feminist, and a member of LJ since 2001, and a paying member for the past 5 years or so, and I would very much like to know what exactly I need to do to make sure my journal isn't suspended, and I don't even write (or read) fanfiction. It's not just a matter of reinstating wrongfully suspended journals, it's a matter of communication and clear guidelines and respect, and above all, TRUST. I want to know these things because otherwise I can't trust that when I wake up tomorrow my journal, or any of my friends' journals, will still be there. |

I'd imagine most of you have heard about this by now, but for those who haven't (probably only my non-fandom friends), you should know that LJ has been deleting journals en masse, for doing nothing other than having words such as "incest" listed as an interest, as it is supposedly tantamount to encouraging others to commit an illegal act. Among the journals deleted permanently, without notice, and with no possibility of appeal, are not only multiple fanfiction communities, but also a community aimed at supporting the victims of sexual abuse, RPG (role playing) journals where the character is a villain in the game, and at least one community dedicated to the discussion of Nabokov's literary masterpiece Lolita. ( Why are they doing this? ) Bottom line is that, as usual, we, the paying customers, are the ones who are also paying the price for 6A/LJ's lack of any sort of backbone, moral compass, or loyalty to those who use their services without breaking any laws, and without doing anything to violate LJ's Terms of Service. There is a plethora of information about what's been happening spread around various personal journals and communities. I've spent hours sifting through much of this information, and I wanted to provide a few links for those of you who are interested in this issue from any of a variety of aspects. * Facts and Figures * Though Six Apart hasn't bothered talking to its users, they have talked to CNET News. You can read about it here. For a continuously updated (though still partial) list of accounts that have been suspended so far, as well as other facts and links, try For information about the "Warriors for Innocence" involvement in this mess, including correspondence and follow up on the updates to their site, as well as other facts and links, try Both journals have much more comprehensive lists of links than this one. What is apparently a more complete list of deleted journals can be found here. * Fandom * While I personally neither read nor write fanfic, I do recognize that it is a major part of fannish life and a central aspect of fan communities, so when LJ decides to delete numerous fanfic archives without reason, I take it as a sign of their complete and utter disregard for the large portion of LJ that is involved in any fandom in any way. * Legal & Activism* http://fandomtossed.greatestjournal.c Finally, just because I find the idea fighting idiocy by reading more books particularly appealing, a quote from "May I suggest that if you plan on making your protest against the current "illegal interests" crackdown financial by not extending your paid account or buying other LJ services, then spend that money on a book or two from this post, which aims to be a list of "every single piece of published fiction you can think of with ILLEGAL SEXUAL ACTIVITIES, like incest or underage sex". Because we know the difference between fiction and fact. Because we know that inclusion of these very real issues in fiction does not necessarily glamourise, condone or encourage any sort of harmful illegal sexual activities." I think I'm gonna go and promote an illegal act by adding "gay marriage" to my interests. It's not gonna do any good, but irony makes me happy. My sincere apologies to those of you whose flist has been hijacked by this issue for adding to your misery. |
