Bill O'Reilly, remixed (and nsfw) [May. 16th, 2008|04:11 pm]

This could've been really, really poorly done. But it wasn't. In fact, I'd probably put it up there with Negativland's "U2" as far as profanity-laced outtakes from media peronalities set to music go (although, I realize that's a very small genre). Still, just watch:

School (coming up for air) [Apr. 28th, 2008|02:23 am]
[Tags|, ]

The final stretch of last semester was easy. Surprisingly easy. Not so this semester. I barely have time to do anything but write, write more and write even more.

I'll be glad when these courses are all out of the way and I can just start working on video projects all the time.

You must be foolin'. [Apr. 9th, 2008|04:06 pm]

How did I miss the fact there's a new Def Leppard album coming out in 3 weeks? Furthermore, how did I miss the fact that their new single "Nine Lives" is a duet with Tim-fucking-McGraw?

This just cements my assertion that pop country of the 00s is the pop metal of the 80s. (It's not a bad track at all, though... kind of unexpectedly nice)

New York magazine asks filmmaker Spike Lee for his thoughts about the presidential race:
"I'm riding my man Obama. I think he's a visionary. Actually, Barack told me the first date he took Michelle to was Do the Right Thing. I said, "Thank God I made it. Otherwise you would have taken her to Soul Man. Michelle would have been like, 'What's wrong with this brother?'"

When bad songs happen to great videos: Plug In City, "Broke on a Wheel" [Apr. 5th, 2008|03:29 am]
[Tags|, ]

Anyone old enough to remember listening to cassettes on a Walkman will also surely remember all the inherent flaws with the process. They're bulky, prone to all kinds of disaster, etc. This video addresses it all, but also captures every bit of the romanticism we associate with cassettes and Walkmans now that we no longer use them daily. I just wish this video had been commissioned by a band with a better song for it.

Web hosting is expensive, y'all. Especially when the company bills you for another year despite two separate reminders/requests for them to cancel your account and NOT bill you for another year. Fortunately, I was able to talk my bank into wiping away that overdraft charge after the hosting company refunded the money they stole.

But anyhoo, now that monkey is off my back and it finally gives me the motivation to do something cool with my Tumblr blog. Say hello (officially) to Mondo Salvo!

If I Were a Carpenter [Mar. 30th, 2008|02:45 am]
[Tags|, , ]

Live music on television, especially on awards shows and late night talk shows, usually sounds terrible. Very few performances throughout tv's history are even worth watching a second time. When CBS aired their tribute to Johnny & June Carter Cash in November of 2005, I just happened to land on the right channel at the right time and saw one of those rare moments where music on tv is not only good, but almost divine. I've been hoping against hope that this would one day be released as a standalone recording, but for now Youtube will have to do.

Free music! March 2008 mix [Mar. 24th, 2008|12:38 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I was getting worried about this earlier in the month, because there wasn't really a ton of good new music coming my way. Then I remembered a few things I'd left off previous mixes and sort of integrated them in with the brand new stuff I'd found I actually do like. The lesson here? Save something for a rainy day.  I think this mix is probably the best of these I've made so far, strangely enough.  The others have been collections of songs, but I really think of this one as a mix.  Hopefully you will too.  As always, download, enjoy and leave a comment!  Thanks.

My new favoritist thing ever (today): Wet Paint [Mar. 19th, 2008|01:21 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

Throughout the early and mid-90s, you could barely throw a drumstick in any direction and not hit a band that sounded at least a little bit like Pavement, especially Slanted & Enchanted-era Pavement. It got kind of old after a while, right? But when a band sounds like that in 2008, it's more of an "oh wow, I miss when bands all sounded like this" kind of thing. I don't really know much about Wet Paint besides this one song (and a couple others that are streaming on their Myspace page), but it just kind of keeps creeping into my playlist and today I thought I'd share.

Lighten Up, Morrissey [Mar. 18th, 2008|01:52 pm]
[Tags|, ]

The upcoming Sparks album contains a song titled "Lighten Up, Morrissey", which I find flat out hilarious just on its surface, but apparently some of Moz's harder-core fans have been raising objections...so much so that management for Sparks had to issue a statement on the matter:
"Sparks have refuted speculation that a new song attacks Morrissey. 'Lighten Up, Morrissey' is actually about a man who is unlucky in love, because his girlfriend doesn't think he'll ever match up to Moz. Sparks' manager Sue Harris told PS: "It's a tribute to Morrissey. The Maels are big admirers of Morrissey - he's been a Sparks fan for years, and the feeling is mutual."

My new favoritist thing ever (today): Ladyhawke [Mar. 15th, 2008|02:40 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

I put one of her songs on my February favorites mix, and it was really a toss-up for me between that one and this one. Turns out this one is going to be the first single, though, now that her deal with Modular Records is formalized. "Back of the Van" is awash in '80s-ness, which is perfectly fine with me (in case you've never picked up on that). I can't really be sure if it appeals to my nostalgic sensibilities or my modern ones more, but it's legit enough that it wouldn't sound out of place on any number of '80s teen movie soundtrack albums...all of which I still listen to.

The 'Doh [Mar. 14th, 2008|12:45 pm]

Domino is continuing their Sebadoh reissues series with Bubble & Scrape, coming out the first week of May.

That one's kind of near and dear to me, having bought it and Bakesale on the same day way back when as my headfirst introduction to the band. Still don't understand why people cream themselves over the stuff that came before it, like The Freed Man and III, though. meh.

It finally struck me. [Mar. 8th, 2008|04:37 am]
[Tags|, , ]

Regardless of who wins in November, children born five years ago, children born today and children born five, ten or fifty years from now will never be able to personally remember a time in America's history when a woman or a person of color wasn't considered a legitimate contender for the nation's highest office.

Yeah, I know people have been calling this race historic for more than a year now, but it wasn't until I saw that little girl's face that I realized everything about the nature of presidential politics has forever been changed by this campaign. Bless you, little girl. You and your generation have the best chance at getting everything right that everyone before you has done their darndest to mess up. Don't squander this opportunity.
