FRIENDS ONLY [Thursday
July 29th, 2027 at 6:53pm]

This journal is going to be Friends Only from now on - icon
posts and such will be public, but that's mostly it.

Comment to be added.
And please, I'd prefer you to have some reason for
friending me. Anyway, if you just add me without any kind of
comment whatsoever, it's quite likely I won't add you back.
(Don't let me put you off, though. I love making new friends.
And I don't bite. In fact, I don't think I even bark. ;)

Story time! [Sunday
March 30th, 2008 at 8:06pm]
I was reading a book of Anni Swan's fairytales, and there was one I liked a lot. (You know, it's kind of funny I've got this book full of wonderful fairytales on my shelf, have had it basically for all my life, and I don't remember the tales. Why haven't I been reading them? They're great.) Anyway. As it happens, I started translating this story. Just for you. xD

I hope you excuse me for translating only the latter half of it – everything important is in this half. ;) Now, what happened in the beginning: There were three brothers who set out into the world to search for their happiness. The eldest became a wise and respected professor, the second married a princess. But the youngest… Read more... )

It's been a while since I've posted any icons, I think. So... I thought it's time to post this bunch. Some of you might remember that one kids' book I mentioned a while ago, Can You See a Little Bear? As I said, I liked the images a lot, and... here we go. All of these pics aren't from that book, but they're by the same artist, Jackie Morris. (1-28 are from the Little Bear, 32 & 33 from the Snow Leopard, rest are... random.)

Can you see a little icon? ...or 42 of them... )

[ Current moodCurrent music | Teddy Bears' Picnic (in my head) ]

Yesterday I had some wonderful time. I took part on the summer university's archeology excursion ("Itäistä Uuttamaata jatulintarhoista kartanoihin.") It was a lovely trip, if a little tiring (we left at 8:30 am and came back 10 pm.)

The first thing we went to see was the old church of Sipoo that has been built in 1450–1454. One funny thing about that church is that it was first going to have three aisles, as was usual for churches in that time, but when it was already being built, they realized there's no room for eight pillars in such a small church. So, the plans were changed, and now, in the front part of the church there are three aisles, in the back only two.

The next place we went to was a stone age quartz quarry. Of which I would have walked over without noticing anything had there not been that "prehistoric relic, protected by law" sign there. ^^ From there we drove to Porvoo, where we took a boat to one island. But on the way there we stopped by the Porvoo river to admire the landscape. I'm afraid the pics I took don't quite do it justice...

From Porvoo, on the boat, we went to take a look on a very well preserved jatulintarha - something like the Troy Towns in Britain. The boat trip took two hours and it was one of the best parts of the trip (if a bit windy... ^^). The archipelago outside Porvoo is pretty... Once we came to the island where we were going to, we got some problems, though. It took us half an hour to get to land... you see, that island only has some summer homes, and no "official" harbor or anything, so first we had to get permission to get to land, and then to get some room at the harbor for our "big" boat... It was a bit tricky, and I think that in the future it might be a bright idea to contact somebody there before suddenly turning up with 50 something people (especially since to get to the "Troy Town" we had to walk through some gardens... ^^;) Well, everyone there were quite understanding and friendly. Though I can understand why they're not making any big number of their relic - I wouldn't want a group like ours invading the place every weekend or so.

The next target were two manors, Tervik Manor, and Rutumi Manor. The first one was an adorable place, it truly felt like a real manor. The problem with the second one..... well, I liked it too, it was a pretty place. But it had been made over into a cafe, and ... okay, so the difference between these two places was quite apparent in the two ladies of the manor who received us. The Rutumi lady was friendly and kind and putting up a show for us, the Tervik lady was friendly and kind and a Lady. As a result I took lots of pictures of Tervik, but apparently not one of Rutumi. ^^; (So check the link if you want to see it.)

By the time we were out of the manors we were an hour late of our schedule and didn't have time to go to see the barrows (which anyway would have been only piles of stones in the woods), so we went right to see one ryssänuuni. And I've no idea what to call that in English... stone oven, maybe. They are most often connected to making food, though they might have had other uses too. The Finnish name which refers to Russians is based on the fact that the ovens in the Turku archipelago are mainly found in the areas the Russian galleys were during the periods of Great Hate (1700–1721) and Lesser Hate (1742-43). They might have used them as ovens, apparently...

It wasn't a big thing, and we had some difficulty in finding it, as it was there in the middle of the forest with no signs or anything.

[Monday
July 23rd, 2007 at 8:16pm]
Dad got our computer a new monitor. A flat one, to spare room on our quite crowded computer table. But... it's so big! I mean the screen... This'll take me a moment to grow used to. Besides, I have to change my wallpaper... and also, I have to do something about my writing journal. The background looks quite ridiculous on this monitor. ^^;; (I knew it probably would on big monitors, but didn't really care as long as I didn't have to see it. ^^)

I'm not sure if I like this monitor, though. It's one of those spread ones... (1440x900) *pokes the monitor* Stop looking so weird!

Hmm. I wish there were some code which would make the background pic always appear as big as the monitor is. That'd be handy. xD

Hmm. Here's answers to the song meme, btw. Yeah, I know, I was lazy and didn't do any bolding in the original post... ^^ Read more... )

Random question: if you didn't know how old I am, what would you guess? ^^ I'm just wondering... first there was the waitress in Jyväskylä wanting to see my ID before selling me alcohol, and today I deeply shocked one coworker when she found out that I am not 21. And no, I'm not 23 either... xD

As I just can't remember what else I was going to write here about - there was something, I'm sure - here's one of those "guess the song" memes, again. Just because.

Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING.

Swedish filter [Wednesday
July 18th, 2007 at 9:19pm]
I've a plan. I'll try to write a little in my journal in Swedish. Because I really need to try to get that language activated - it's too difficult to talk in Swedish even about some totally every day things. I was thinking I'd make a post in Swedish every now and then, you know, something in the style "I am tired. I woke up at 8 and went to work. It was boring." and so on - something quite simple. The vast majority of you don't understand Swedish, of course... so I'll make a filter for those posts. If you for some reason or another want to be on that filter, let me know.

(As for the job... it is a little bit boring. There really aren't that many customers in July, and especially during the last hours of the day I don't have much else to do than to try to figure out where all those shoes people leave lying around really belong to.)

[ Current moodCurrent music | 500 Miles Away From Home ]

I think it was back in April when I first time got some weird rash under my armpits. It went away, it came back, it went away, and... a week or two ago it spread to the bend of arms, then to the arms, then to hollows of the knees and on my chest. It's sweat rash, I'm sure, and I've had some trouble with it before. On sultry days I always have to have shorts under the dress, or otherwise I get it on my tights... Kind of annoying.

Anyway, it had never got this bad before (or this itchy!), and so yesterday I went to the health center where the nurse took a look at it and gave me time to doctor. The time was for 1 pm yesterday. My work started at three, but I thought there was plenty of time... at 1:45 I went to ask just when the doctor was going to see me, and it turned out she had some acute case right then, and it could take some 20 minutes still. I told them I don't have that much time, and so I got a new time for this morning, and... during the night the rash almost disappeared. ^^; Well, there's definitely something left still, but compared to what it was like....

And the doctor was kind of useless, anyway. She agreed with me that it was sweat rash, but somehow it felt that I new more of it than she after all research I'd done on internet. xD And she gave me something for the itch, but it's not itching anymore. Oh well, at least I have something now if it turns bad again.

I've been going to recommend this cat comic for ages, but always forget: Lackadaisy. The style's something awesome... It's made by the same artist as some of my favorite art at DA (like that one pic she uses at her home page) too. Too bad, btw, that the story that goes with that painting isn't so great. Or... well, I don't know if it's great or not, because I've huge problems getting past the first paragraph. ^^; Would that count as purple prose, I wonder...
(First page of the comic, as there seems to be some trouble in the archive. At least for me.)

***

A couple of random things from the con before I forget them again:

On Sunday I bought a drink at one place, and the woman there asked for my ID. xD I found out that I'm getting old enough to be flattered instead of being mortified - "shit, do I really look like a kid?" Actually, I think I'm somewhere in-between of those two reactions. Mostly amused... ^^

I was a bit disappointed I didn't get a picture of one totally awesome cosplayer at the con, but then I noticed he's on one of my random photos. It's not too good, but anyway, at least he's partially visible. He had a Santa Claus beard, white face, fun lights on his head and hand (it lighted on his knuckles when he closed his hand), black costume, and he was big. It was quite an impressive sight. ^^

The pic )

At the Saturday's party there were songs performed for the quests of honor. They were, in general, really good, and quite fun. I managed to find the lyrics for one that's responsible for the fact that "500 Miles away from home" is still stuck in my mind. Read more... )

I went to swim today after the doctor visit, at the outdoor swimming pool near my home. Good thing I was there early - the line in front of it was just crazy when I left. It's a beautiful day, of course, but... would all those people even fit into the pool at the same time? O.o

Some Baking Adventures [Tuesday
July 10th, 2007 at 2:02pm]
[ Current moodCurrent music | mmmm. Yummy. xD ]

Finally I had time to try one Marguerite recipe I got from [info]ego_chan some time ago. Lemon cookies with marmalade, meringue, and sprinkles on top (though I didn't have any sprinkles. Or I did, but... their "best before" was 2002. You think I could have used them anyway? ^^;;)
The thing is... I'd never in my life made anything with any kind of frosting. So... as I quite realistically was expecting, it didn't turn out quite as it was supposed to. I think next time I make the cookies smaller and thicker (I've no idea how the came out so thin this time... well, okay, maybe I should have used something else to cut them than the same cup I use for the Christmas tarts. Too big. I just grasped it quite automatically without thinking anything. ...that in general is my problem when I bake. I don't think. xD) Anyway. If they're smaller, maybe then I won't run out of the frosting like did now. (I guess what I should have done this time would have been to put it only on some of the cookies and leave others without, and not to try to put some on all of them...) Also, have to beat it bit longer, I guess. I thought it was "glossy and stiffened", but apparently it wasn't stiffened enough. (Glossy it was, though. Definitely.)

But anyway. The cookies are delicious, even if they don't look that great. ^^ And I've always been of the opinion that's it's much more important that something tastes good than that it looks good. ^^ As the saying goes, "moni kakku päältä kaunis..." (many a cake are beautiful on the top).

Well... here you see the fruits cookies of my labor: Read more... )
And here's what they should look like: Read more... )

On other news... I saw The General the other day - a silent movie from 1926. It was quite fabulous. It's been a long time since I've watched a silent movie the last time... but I think this became my favorite. So much fun. Also, it's the grandmother of all chase movies... Oh, and this thing I later read about one scene quite amused me: "[the director] did not tell the actor portraying the Northern commanding officer what to expect: his look of total shock was genuine." xD

[Friday

My god. Those rains in southern Sweden are just not... real anymore. They've got one month's rain in one day. I was just reading news from Lund (I have this certain interest in Lund, after the exchange period, you see...)

"In Höje river, or rather, in what usually is a pasture by it, stand three horses" begins one article... (the horses are ok, there's just water up to their belly there... and they can't take them away before they find their owner.)

And... see that thing under the bridge in the beginning of this clip? It's a car.^^;;
(Edit... I just love the way that woman pronounces the word "Skåne". xD)
(Edit2: ...I don't understand what that man says. x.x Please don't speak Skånska. *ded*)

I think this was in Denmark... there's some big rock festival about to start, and authorities gave out this warning: "don't flake out on the ground. You might drown."

...I guess I shouldn't laugh, but I just can't help it.... ^^;;

Anyway. It's relatively dry here... I went to ride today, again. ^^ This was the fourth time, and I don't anymore get as stiff afterward as I used to. ^^ My legs/arms/back/stomach/fingers don't hurt anymore. Yay. ^^ I really hope I'll have money to continue riding when autumn comes. We'll see...

Heh. Today I saddled a horse. This is a noteworthy event because... I don't remember when I've done it last time. ^^; Well, I know it did happen in 1998, but after that... ^^;; But I managed to do it on my own today. Yay for that too. ^^ Even though the horse, once I came to it's its box, put its ears as back as they got, turned around and kind of... shook it's back hoof at me. Not any friendly fellow... And I had to ask some twelve-year-old to check that everything was ok before I left to ride... ^^

...have to go to eat now, apparently.

Three Wishes for Cinderella [Wednesday
July 4th, 2007 at 10:52am]
I've been going to write about this for some time, but keep on forgetting... (By the way... there might be some spoilers in this... as far as there now can be any spoilers about Cinderella...)

The other day I watched a Czech movie from 1970's, Three Wishes for Cinderella (Tři oříšky pro Popelku). I think it became my favorite adaptation of Cinderella right away... It's a little different from the other versions I've seen (or read.) There's no fairy godmother, for one thing (nor does she get help from her dead mother). The Czech title would directly translated mean "three nuts for Cinderella", I think... What's that fairytale where the princess has the three magical nuts with beautiful dresses in them? Well, anyway, in this version, Cinderella gets them. Their magic isn't really explained in any way, but that didn't really bother me.

I really liked Cinderella's character in this. She's not just a meek and obedient little girl... the "sweep the floor properly" episode springs to mind... xD Anyway. She rides and hunts and goes for a boy, but like the Disney Cinderella, she too has all these animal friends and is definitely a "good person". Oh, and she also meets the prince before the ball... throws a snowball at him and ruins his hunt. ^^

There's a video at Youtube about the movie, to the German version of the theme song. (It goes basically through the whole movie, just so you know.)

Quickie update now that I've a chance: I just got news that my gradu's through the evaluation process. The grade: excellent. ^___^ Take that, Big G!

We've a three scale system nowadays (pass, good, excellent) and I was honestly expecting "good". That's what mostly everyone gets, anyway. Though I kind of wish we still used the old system (laudatur, eximia cum laude approbatur, magna cum laude approbatur, cum laude approbatur, non sine laude approbatur, lubenter approbatur, and approbatur)... but so what. I guess "excellent" sounds just as good as some fancy Latin term. ^^

And tomorrow I go to ride. ^____^

I might not be online that much for a little while as my dad has part of his summer vacation now. Today we came from our summer home, tomorrow we go back there, then to Tampere, then it's Midsummer, then probably summer home again... and so on.

Just so you know - I'm still alive, even if I don't update every day. ^~

[ Current moodCurrent music | annoyed? Silly? I don't know. ]

One random thought... why is it that you can't sing aloud when you're walking there on the streets? I just... often feel like singing when I'm walking alone, so I hum quietly to myself, and always stop when someone gets close enough to hear me. The other day I saw one woman biking by, and heard too, as she was singing aloud. People looked after her like she was a bit crazy ... me too, I guess. So what's the rule? You can sing all you want, but not so other people hear you? Silly...

In other news... *sigh* Technology is mysterious. I got that - what do you call them - that USB stick thingy for Christmas for watching TV on my laptop (because with it I can see the digi channels we can't watch with our TV.) I haven't used it much, but today I thought to watch one movie...

But it has stopped working, in a very mysterious way. I mean... everything seems to work, and its reception is just as good, if not better, as before, but... there's no picture, and there's no sound. I tried searching for the channels again, and it claims it finds 0 channels - even though I can see that at times there are channels for it to grab - it just doesn't grab them.

Figures. Just when I wanted to watch something. This thing, that is. ^^

Whatever. Here's something cute for you.

And btw, that My Little Ponies comic has totally brainwashed me. Yesterday I digged up my ponies from their cardboard box and today I've been playing with them a little. ^^; But honestly, how can you not love ponies who value chocolate? ^^

Hmm. In other news... hmm. There are no other news. We spent the weekend at summer home, again. And... oh, yes! This is important. I threw away the winter coat - in other words, went to swim in the lake. The water was incredibly warm (especially for this time of year). Usually I don't go swimming before midsummer... and now it's still two weeks to that. Oh, and people had already been baling hay. (I kind of wish they still used the old hay poles, though...) This doesn't usually happen before midsummer, either... it's been a warm hot start for this summer.

The mosquitoes also have had an early start, unfortunately. *scratches her itching ankle*

[ Current moodCurrent music | music: Lapin tango (Tamara Lund) ]

I've been going to an archeology course in the summer university. It's free for all, so I just go there whenever I feel like it and listen for a while... And the result of my not so diligent approach is that the only things that stuck in my mind are those which are most impressive... Like for example this place Carnac in France... where there's 3000 (big) stones in eleven rows that are 8 km long. Can't help but wonder... Then there's this: Le Grand Menhir Brisé, which was 20m hight and weighed 350 tons. It fell down in an earthquake in 1722. If I remember right, the lecturer said that according to some, about 5000 men would have been needed to move it.

I remember stuff like that. Just don't ask me what kind of axe they used in which culture. No idea. (And I don't really care either...^.^) Anyway, it's been quite interesting so far. I've always been interested in archeology (goes with my love of ruins, I guess) but never really studied anything (and I'm not sure if this can be called stuying either...) I've found that I like cave art, though. ^^ Like this Altamira bison or these pictures at Chauvet, oldest of which date back to 33000 BC, or Lascaux, where they've got a fantasy animal. ^^

One thing I didn't know about cave art: there seems to be some kind of a structure, the animals are not drawn just anywhere in the cavern, they've got their own places. Like this. I'm pleased to note that horse has a central position. ^.^ (Well, I'm not sure if that means anything, but... anyway.)

Oh well. Enough of archeology.

...I really like this old song, btw: Lapin tango (Tango of Lapland), sung by Tamara Lund. She has such a beautiful voice... (and yes, it's in Finnish.)

b) The number of pirates has got (and is getting) smaller.

[Sunday
June 3rd, 2007 at 8:58pm]
This weekend has been full of traveling. On Friday I went to Jyväskylä to hand in the gradu for evaluation (decided to go there myself instead of just mailing it... could see some friends there also.) That trip made me a little nostalgic... there I realized that this is the last time I'm going to the department of languages (last time as a student who has some business there, anyway). My instructor even hugged me, which was... kind of funny, but also kind of touching.

On Saturday we went to our summer place. It was a very beautiful day, and I suddenly realized that the shore is a very nice place to sit an write. Especially now that we carried one wicker chair there. I even got something written there, which is quite extraordinary these days. And then I forgot all the papers there... (not by the shore, but at our summer home, that is.) Well, maybe we'll go there next weekend too... Took a pic of my writing place )

When I was scribbling there, I suddenly heard some rustling behind me. When I turned to take a look, I saw something that looked very much like this (it was darker, almost black) speeding to the cover of the boat, where it stopped to take a peek at me with very bright little eyes. ^^ It was cute. I think it was a mink... fits the description quite perfectly. The only other choice would be the ... European mink (which is not called a mink in Finnish, btw. It's vesikko, for those who want to know. American mink is the "mink"), but that'd be news as it's extinct in Finland these days. (Of course, I guess it's hard to know for sure, as the American mink and the European mink look so similar. In fact, I read that the last time the latter has been seen was in 1992, and then they made sure that it was the E. mink with DNA tests... so yes, apparently they're kind of hard to separate.)

But it was cute. We also saw a swallowtail and an orange tip during the weekend. I've never before seen either of those, so this was a real nature weekend.

Today we drove to Tampere to see my grandparents. Grandma is still in hospital, and ... even though she still recognizes people and she can be totally reasonable when you talk with her, it seems to me that she's growing more and more random all the time. You sit quietly for a moment and she's bound to say something that makes no sense whatsoever. And her moving is really bad too. I think it would be best, in the end, if she could stay somewhere where there's competent people taking care of her. Grandfather is still in amazingly good condition for his age, but he's complaining about his feet too nowadays, and he doesn't quite move as easily anymore as he did a couple of years ago. Last time I watched him helping grandma to table I couldn't help thinking that it's only a matter of time when something happens.

We'll see. But today was also a beautiful day, and we spent much of it outside. And I walked around a lot and took pictures and so on... as I suddenly realized that there's no telling how long that place is going to be my "mummola" from now on. Somehow you grow up thinking that some things are eternal and are always going to be there, and... it's kind of hard to get used to the idea that they are not. That's life, I guess... but I still hate the idea that some day there'd be strangers living in that place.

Well, whatever. Here's a few of the pics I took: Read more... )
