reminder that jugger, this sunday, from 1pm on, at new farm park has the possability of being quite a large gathering, as it's the weekend after gencon.

    gen con, huh?

so, we set up the armour and the weapons and we talked to a bunch of people who:
    • remembered the movie and would like to see some people playing it.
    • remembered the movie and would like to play it.
    • have never seen the movie and are amazed that people would want to replicate it.
    • have never seen the movie before but like the idea of it.
either way, weather permitting, it looks like this sunday at new farm park may have a few extra people turn up, seeing as we gave away around 2,000 + fliers over the weekend.

it was a great time, marred only by one out-of-towner (who think that, because they do it differently, everyone should do it like they do. (not an out of town jugger but out of town foam weapon user, who, in one day, had solved the "problem" that larpers, cos-players and re-creationists have up here in queensland...)) and those who manned the booth on saturday, while i rested, giving my hammer to mungo mckay who promptly broke it with one swing.

when i have said, repeatedly, since it was first made, no one uses my hammer, but me.

and i left it with them, when they know the above.

but no, in a bizarre quest to fanboy out to any potential mini celebrity or outfit that might walk past in the name of a photo-op, they sacrificed my hammer (and my opinion of them) upon the altar of publicity.

still, it's not so bad. the autopsy revealed my original design idea remains sound and i will remake it, just with better plating on the inside of it. maybe even by this weekend...

    which would be nice.

anyway, here's the gallery of photos that have come through from the event. i can't look at them for long before i can feel my teeth gnashing, but feel free to look through, yourselves.(the photo of it being swung is not mungo, it's dragonlance author tracy hickman.)

so, that jugger gear i bought... after an elaborate, drawn out tease, we've finally let the german players see the goods.

here are a bunch of the photos from the group unveiling.

also, a few people have been talking about the fact that there is a club that's opened up in the lands office. i was pleasantly surprised to find out that the guy running the club (overdrive) was the guy who got me heavily into p.w.e.i., rather than the casual listener that i was, back at university. some of you may have been to his previous club, "park life".

today the two movies that i witnessed were the happening and speed racer.

my verdict on the happening? not much happening, really. in terms of production values, good, taught suspenseful film making, but i wonder how many people are just going to get all riled up over the premise and think that it's stupid. that and it played out as the most predictable and obviously foreshadowed film that m. night has made to date (possibly an editing issue). there is no final twist/big reveal, i'll tell you that, right now, so you won't waste time looking for one, but the atmosphere that he generates, particularly in how people act when the change happens, comes across effectively and is still worth watching. on a big screen, though... it does feel wasted. marky mark delivers a few lines horribly, but zooey deschanel does a magnificent job of her material...

a good cloudy/windy day movie to watch under a blanket with someone, not so much a must see cinema film.

speed racer on the other hand...

the script was terrible. horrible. really, really awful lines appeared in some points.

all direct lines from the original tv show.

but with susan sarandon, john goodman delivering some of them, i was willing to let things pass.

emile hirsch as speed takes time to warm up to, but by the end, i was behind him.

the cgi for the car racing/battle scenes falls victim to the problems of trying to make cgi look good, so lots of far too close shots with wobbly cameras that make it far to difficult to follow the actual action, at times, but then again...

but.... you get trixie, played over the top by christina ricci. alternatively, you get the brat and the chimp.

you get the racer x plot, magnificently done, and the supporting cast of badguys look like they're meant to be anime bad guys.

and then, you get the race tracks.

what ever bad things i say about the close up shots are more than made up for by the distance shots of the gloriously rendered world that the film takes place in. the trans-country race, in particular, is a real testament to the abilities of those involved. the desert sequences make the pod racers scene from the first prequel for star wars look outdated, already. the gaudy 70's style colours over everything, works as it's in context.

no politics, no heavy handed symbolism (which means the wachowski's hopefully won't make two sequels that suck), just a strong family message mixed with a lot of stupid fun and definitely worth catching on the big screen.

    the fiend
and tomorrow, i think i'll actually try to be productive...

today, i got to see the incredible hulk (hulk smash!) and aside from a few majorminor changes from existing comic book character histories, i was quite happy with it. some people have a problem with the almost flat out denial of the previous ang lee film (while others are grateful for it) but as a regular reader of comics, i'm more that used to new artists and ret-cons and i got to see the things i wanted to see...

also, they realised that not enough people hung around for the after credits bit in iron man, so no bonus material to wait for, if you're expecting it.... they've put it before the credits (i still waited 'till the very end, just to check).

then i had lunch with [info]girlclumsy and her blogging/writer entourage/posse at blue smoke bbq on merthyr rd in new farm. i was delighted to see that they had north carolina style pull-apart pork bbq on the menu and ordered up a sam'ich of it.

after having the real thing in north carolina, i have to say, it's a decent variation of the true thing. they add an extra sweet, more traditional, sauce that is pleasant to the taste but made me ponder how they would react if i asked for it without (or i'll just wait until i go back to n.c.). i've been told to go for the rib platter, next time, especially with others there... hmmm?

    howdy folks.

well, may was fairly busy and now i just need to start preparing for the sydney sexpo in july. i have a few things that the adelaide showed helped me identify as teething problems, so i know what to look out for.... in the mean time i hope to catch up with a few people, yes i do...

in other news, i received four packages in the mail today, from adelaide. i haven't opened them yet. i'll do that tomorrow at the training session, with a crowd so i can watch the happy faces. i'll probably even bring some to the jugger game on sunday, so others can look on in amazement....

to remind myself, just as much as others.... jugger(the site has been redone, let us know what you think!) in new farm park at 1pm, this sunday. come and watch, play or shake your head at what grown people will do on a sunday....

oh, yes, i drove my parents to the airport this morning, after "the conversation" happened las night. the gist?
    • am i the one who does the whipping? - yes.
    • is it legal? - what i do, yes.
    • do people actually get hurt? - grey area, but no more than they want to be.
    • am i going to meet a nice girl this way? - based on my definition of nice, yes.
they feel slightly less anxious, especially when i explained how long i've been doing this, how careful i am, what people think of me and that i don't live it 24/7. so i hope they enjoy bridge up in townsville. i expect further points of contention when they get back....

and now... the last four videos from japan!(just under a month after i got back...) )

the previous post has been hid, now
you've all seen it, so i must now vow,
not to leave myself open to
    the gentle jibes of "i-know-who..."

since that post i have done flittered,
to the southern states i've skittered.
    canberra, our home of fed-
    eration, some work had led.

    teaching, training, pontificating,
    those who will be matriculating,
as i gather the needs for passing along,
the skills for doing right, when acting wrong.

just one night, no time to seek,
the locals there with whom i'd speak,
back in the air, return to my den,
for brief respite then off ag'n.

to adelaide my flight did take,
(some might say, my first mistake)
five nights, six days, there for fun,
    and, surprise, a little sun.

the stall, at first, was rather bare,
    bad memories meant that there
was nothing for victims to upon lean
when i was playing at playing mean.

eventually those in the local scene
took a shine to my very sheen
    allowances to borrow stocks
resulted in a booth that rocks.

sunday proved a day of fun,
when i awoke to contact [info]mireille21,
a catch up all too short
but filled with such merry sport.

to the suburbs we did speed
to fulfill a very special need....

    at a house, numbered five
    i felt myself come alive.
the joy, the thrill, oh, i did squee,
brought about by boxes at my knee.

    from converstations long ago,
    [info]xutech let the info flow,
    once upon a video store
held these items, and much more.

but now i held them in my grasp,
    looking over the armours clasp,
the helm, it did not fit, oh bugger,
but it's from "salute of the jugger"

three suits of armour at the very least,
the pompfen swung by that hauer beast,
and the weapon we all love the most, by far,
the chain that was swung by young gar.

giddy in both body and mind,
i was led to the garden, only to find
a martian war machine at rest
a magnificent sight, i can attest...

    conversations, stories of old
photos of past exploits, so bold.
then a buzzing arose from my phone,
alerting me to a call from my old, old home.

    "hello there, my favourite son,"
    my father's voice had begun,
"did you know you can be seen
on the courier mail's front home page screen?"

so, now it's all known and out in the open,
they're a bit nervous but seem to be cope'n
now i'm back from travel afar,
just don't tell my dear old granma....

ron hitler barrasi's eulogy for tokin' blackman (aka tony coitus).

ever since i went to tism gigs at the arena, i always made sure i was in "my spot". just to the right of the right column, up against the barrier. right in front of "banjo land". best view of the house. i was always in awe of how, with all the other chaos, all around, he never missed a beat or dropped a note, eve with a naked ron tripping into him.

i spent two moments in quiet contemplation of anzac day, yesterday.

one was on top of a giant stained glass sun tower(the symphonic sculpture of happiness, by gabriel loire), where i thought of the changes to our very lives, should they have failed in their efforts.

the other was sitting in an open air public heated spring bath in the mountains.

where i got out of the spring and waggled my private parts at the general populace, in the name of the precious freedoms that we democratic people share...
