I found my copy of "Frank's Wild Years"! It had gotten mixed up with the Ween CD's! I'm so relieved, I thought for a moment my mind was going...

Aaaah! I was just looking at my CD collection and I realised to my horror I don't have a CD of Tom Waits's "Franks Wild Years"! Years ago most of my CD collection was ripped off and I've been haphazardly rebuilding it ever since but somehow i missed that one and to go through life without a copy of "Franks Wild Years" is just, well, it's unspeakable! Now I'm going to have to find me a copy, should be pretty cheap, if anyone out there is still selling CD's!
Aaaahhh!

Jul. 26th, 2008 @ 09:39 pm Squidhead
Today was my first crack at the Squidhead where local cartoonists get to sell their comics at the Vancouver Art Gallery's Krazy comic art show. All I can say for potential Squidheaders is, pray for rain! Because it was overcast with a little drizzle we, myself, Owen Plummer and Verne were moved inside with 6 FOOT TABLES! Lots of room to stretch out. I made about $50-$60, sold comics to people from all over, everything from a guy catching a ferry back to Victoria to a couple of young women flying back to, maybe Victoria, Australia. It got real slow after awhile but I managedd to get a couple sales in as we packed up. It was fun, talked to Verne about the work he did on Captain Canuck... he didn't even know about the Captain Canuck postage stamp! I was disappointed that most of the people I tolded about this were'nt able to attend except for Laura. I'm particularly diappointed in you folks in other parts of Canada and the world who didn't drop everything to fly over for the event, c'mon, Vancouvers nice and we could use the tourist bucks! In front of the art gallery was a festival of Islmic culture going on all day and as you might know cartoonists are currently non too popular with some segments of the world wide Islamic community. A woman actually came inside to perform her prayers just metres from us, but from the direction she was facing I'm guessing she thought Mecca is somewhere in the Yukon. We didn't have any incidents, but I did refrained from posting the cartoon I drew that said "NOT drawing Mohameed, really!" along with the other cartoons I did that day...

Jul. 27th, 2008 @ 12:11 am Project: Superior, I Shall Destroy All The Civilized yadda yadda: OTHER SUPERHEROES.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I have realized that there is absolutely nothing wrong with superhero comic books at all. Superheroes is a fine genre of storytelling and possibly even an ideal one at that. The problem all these years hasn't been superheroes, per se, but rather the conditions under which these stories are typically created. I wrote on Friday that I'm reading McCloud's Zot and enjoying it. The thing about that comic is that it's made by one person and exists as that person's vision. You know, kind of like Kirby's comics in the '60s. The genre may seem tired to many of us cool and progressive alternative comics people, but that's usually not what's tired. Usually what's tired is the characters themselves. Spider-Man should have finished decades ago. Literally decades. Same with my beloved X-Men. Their time has come and gone a long, long time ago. And everybody's favorite "super" hero, Batman has similarly overstayed his welcome in the land of living stories.

In today's travels, I found a copy of the out-of-print Project Superior from Adhouse Books where cool alternative comics people take turns doing a little dance with the superhero genre. As predicted, the most interesting stuff I've read in it so far are the strips/stories where the author isn't trying to outwit the superhero genre, but rather dives in and rocks out to it as hard as s/he can. This is ideal. Nine out of ten times, if you try to deconstruct a genre, the only thing you end up deconstructing is yourself.

The point of all of this is that superheroes is every bit as much a legitimate storytelling motif as anything else. I think that what is inherently weak about superhero comics as we know them is that they are not works coming directly from a person who thought them up, but an endless relay race of writers and artists passing a baton through the decades. It's even happened with new-era, creator-owned superheroes like my beloved Hellboy. Note: Hellboy is still not a "superhero" in my mind, but I'm going with the consensus here for argument's sake.

Anyway, if people created their own superhero comics and did them earnestly, the genre wouldn't be so sad and corny as it is today. Not that any of what I'm saying matters since the big superhero publishers aren't going to stop publishing their bread and butter for the sake of aesthetics. This is just a small note on the subject.

Thanks for reading. I haven't been home all day, so sketches tomorrow.

Jul. 27th, 2008 @ 12:46 am on reflection, a very good day

This week I got miracled by my downstairs neighbour who had an extra ticket to go see Monkey: Journey to the West at the Royal Opera House this evening. The opera was a spectacular combination of modern dance, circus acrobatics, martial arts, Gorillaz animation, and looked and sounded amazing. The way the music and the huge animation tied some of the scenes together made it feel like we'd all been sucked into the real brain of a marvelous video game, like we were progressing up through the stages, but much more real and immediate than anything on a computer screen. My favourite bits were the mountain of fire and the final huge blue Buddha glory scene. The peach banquet part with the contortionist was brilliant but also made me feel a bit queasy. I think I worry about these people too much, that they'll hurt themselves, which is probably very silly.

Earlier in the day, Stuart and I met up with his cousins in Borough Market and had way too much fun with a certain tea pot while eating a huge lavender meringue.

We also had to take a photo of cousins with the mountain 'o brownies:

Then Stuart and I went to see the BP Portrait Awards and fell dead asleep for an hour on a very comfy sofa on the top floor of the National Portrait Gallery and I left a trail of drool down his shirt. On the way to the opera house, I got another glimpse of the huge airship I keep spotting all over town. I'm geekily keeping a record of my blimp sightings over on Dave's blog here, just because it's so much fun to pester him with airship photos.

comic con maile vinyls

Hey guys,

We are here, live at the SD comic con seeing some old friends and making some new ones. Our new book Kiskaloo seems very successful and I’m really excited about it. Maile girls have been flying off the table, so much so that we tried to have more delivered to us,. However, the hot air balloon that was delivering them got caught in a jet stream. There are rumors that it has been sighted over Wisconsin. Yet another source in Honolulu swears he has been hit in the head by a pineapple. Thus, we are still short of Maile girls. Don’t worry, soon the online store will be up and hopefully by then our pineapple girl situation will be sorted out.

If you’re at the Con, or coming down please visit! I am at booth 1619. Kiskaloo books, sketchbooks, posters, pins, and tattoos are still available.

Oh! And please check out the new kiskaloo site too: http://www.kiskaloo.com

I’ll try to update again with pictures from our comic con adventure.

Jul. 26th, 2008 @ 02:35 pm JAM
So back in this entry, [info]rosyatrandom suggested an online comic jam. I know a lot of my readers are creative people, as evidenced by comments and fanart and fill-in-the-blanks comics, so I figure this could be a lot of fun.

For the uninitiated, a comics jam is basically a big comic where several people each draw a small part. There are several ways we could handle this, but the way I'd like to try first is basically Crazy-Go-Nuts style. If you want to draw the next part of the comics, don't worry about calling "Next" or anything; just draw it and post it in reply to the part you are continuing from. What this means is that there probably will be several times when multiple people continue the story from the same spot. In theory, the strongest entries will be the ones that get the most replies, so the longest thread will end up becoming the "official" story while the rest is bonus materal, stories of exciting alternate worlds. Right?

The reason I want to do it this way instead of reserving places and having just one continuous story is that I think this can be a lot more spontaneous and fun. This way, if you have a great idea or a really funny joke, you can add it at any time instead of having to be there right when a spot becomes available. I don't know if this will work as well as I'm hoping, but if it doesn't we can always try again with a different method.

So, Rules:

1. When you want to draw a section, do so and post it in the comments. Make sure to post it as a reply to the section from which you are continuing the story.

2. If you want to go more than once, that's absolutely fine, but make sure to give other people the chance to go as well. Let's say there must be a minimum of three other people between any two entries by the same person in any continuous storyline.

3. Try not to draw too huge a chunk of story at a time. I'd say to limit yourself to six panels per entry, but consider that a guideline rather than a rule. It can be broken if it serves the story or if you need it to do a joke or if you just really, really want to.

4. Please make sure your image is 600 pixels wide. This is in case I collect all of the entries of a story into one page for easy viewing. Making them a consistent size will save me a ton of hassle of resizing and resaving, and I would really appreciate it.

5. Make sure to label your entry with your name, or your website, or with whatever you want to make sure you get credit for it. I suggest running it vertically up the left side of your image.

6. I know a lot of you aren't "artists" and may feel like you can't draw well enough to participate, but if you want to participate then do it regardless. I, for one, don't care at all how well or how badly you draw. I would love to get a lot of people involved in this so don't be scared!

7. Most importantly, have fun. I know this seems like a lot of rules but this isn't anything serious. It's just something that I hope people will enjoy and have fun doing.

Let me know if there are any questions or suggestions. Now, with that out of the way, I'll start us off:

* ambient magnetic fields: This song somehow ended up representing everything I love about music.
