Recently our New England comics collective Trees & Hills released our new music-related anthology of comics. It comes with a CD of tunes by comic creators. I have a goofy track on there. Here's my comic for the book, a 5-page non-fiction retelling of what happened to a band I like.

it gets sadder under the cut... )

I'm looking forward to drawing something a bit lighter for our next anthology, which is all about FOOD. Hellz yes.

My friend Fok & I had an album in the 1980s. Here's the cover:

This weekend I hit the flea market with some friends and unearthed this little gem from 1968:

That's one dollar well spent, I think! Also finished decorating a pair of white ladies' shoes, using Sharpies:

Might end up making an Etsy page to sell those, I don't know. Last week I got some Posca paint pens in the mail and I'm loving them so far. Here's the first comic I drew with them.

I've started using them on tiny canvases to paint pictures of the alphabet. Maybe these should go on Etsy too.

How much should I charge for them?

Recorded live in the shower this morning:

"Facts of Happy Jefferson Days"

-------------------

A story from the mid-90s in limerick form:

1)
A scientist Frank & his daughter,
whose plane went down into the water,
wound up in a place
full of disco & lace,
where the natives watched "Welcome Back Kotter."

2)
The scientist smashed their TVs,
saying, "I think this show's a disease.
Travolta's a jerk,
with that freaky damn smirk,
and Gabe Kaplan is funny? Oh PLEASE!"

3)
Soon there was peace in the land.
All disco was rapidly banned.
The natives' heads grew.
They used microscopes too!
And the scientist thought it was grand.

4)
A year passed, two years, and two more.
And no one had evened the score.
Then a child was born
on a day Frank would mourn,
and her name was St. Makelovenotwar.

5)
Now she grew like a cheetah on speed.
and she instantly saw the land's need.
"We must disco tonight!
All this science ain't right!
Do the hustle! Just follow my lead!"

6)
It began with a twist of her hips.
Then a song started leaving her lips.
She sang, "Frank is mean,
join my disco machine!
We must guzzle trash culture. No sips!"

7)
So the days of frank's reign were now ended.
And the rules of old grammar got bended.
The doc got kicked out,
so he went home to pout,
and his daughter got married. How splendid!

The good folks who make these lovely bits of cardboard have asked quite a few of us to work our magic on these beloved Marvel Comics heroes and I'm no exception, so I thought I'd share mine with you as well.

Apparently they'll be randomly inserted into card packs so keep your eyes open! I haven't quite received my final approval from the company just yet, but I'm sure it's coming any day now.

Here's a clip with some of the events of June 5-8, 2008. I went to NY City with friends to attend an indie comics festival. Met some very cool folks (Peter Dinklage, Michel Gondry, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Bill Plympton, etc.), ate and drank lots of tasty things, and enjoyed 100 degree temperatures (that's 38 in celsius degrees).

Featured in this clip:
* Connecticut train station board changing over
* Harper dances to the Wonder Woman TV show theme (bless you, NYC public access TV)
* Footage from the subway
* A short walk through part of the comics tables at MoCCA
* A kid in Central Park playing Queen's "I Want To Break Free" on a cello
* Central Park jazz band playing
* a couple guys juggling in Central Park

Got to see some cool pals from The Internets (you LJ folks are the bestest). As always, thank you Big Apple for a wonderful time.

There's something about videos posted online that elicits the most unimaginative reponse possible. That response is the Audio-To-Text-Translation, or ATTT. The phenomenon of ATTT is when people watch a video clip somewhere like YouTube and their only response in the comments is not to give an opinion on the quality of the content, or to offer constructive criticism, but rather to simply type a portion of what they just heard.

That's it.

They watch the clip, hear some dialogue they liked, and type that dialogue into the comments of the webpage. Here's one completely random example, a Chris Ware cartoon from This American Life. The first (and so far only) comment is by someone named soce, who types, "I can feel it on my skin".

That's just a line of dialogue from the video, and he didn't even get it right. The correct quote, if you had to quote it all, is "I can feel this on my skin." But whatever, getting the words right isn't the point. Someone watches a web cartoon about a heavy metal walrus and their first response is just to quote it? "These flippers are now going to shred some tasty jams on this Fender Stratocaster!" Yes, you watched the clip. Yes, you have fingers and can apparently hit the keys on your keyboard in the correct combination to spell out some words. You're hooked on phonics, and you are an idiot.

I just don't get it.

PS - Here's a photo from someplace near my house:

First up we have this bit of Groo fan art:

Then there was this exciting floor plan for a mall...uh, because I was really into malls at age 12. My favorite bits are the "chapel" (did I think people would want to go to church at a mall?) and also the "guard lounge" placed down there near the hobby and comic shops, in the hopes that the guard presence would allow me and my fellow nerds to shop without fear of cool kids hanging around and calling us names):
