Hikaru no Go!
Small fragment from a Hikaru no Go fic that was inspired by a conversation between
lighthawk and
gamoid. I'm sure you two are so thrilled. Shouen-ai warning. PG.
"Okay, this is good place."
"Good for what?" Akira asked. He refused to take his eyes off the game instead listening to the sound of Hikaru digging into his bowl for the next stone. Minutes passed. Finally Akira admitted defeat in the silent contest of wills, and looked at Hikaru for the first time since the game had started.
"This stone..." Hikaru said as he held up the black Go piece "... represents me accidentally calling Akari 'Akira' while we were kissing." Akira's eyes went from narrowed intensity to wide-eyed shock at the statement. Hikaru either didn't notice, or was pretending not to notice as he calmly laid the stone. "Go on. It's your turn."
"Hai," Akira said as he automatically reached into the container for a stone. His eyes scanned the go board, noting the poor position of the black stone Hikaru had just laid. It would only take a few hands to claim it. Instead, Akira used his turn to solidify a defense around one of his own stones. He wanted to see what Hikaru was planning before he committed himself.
"This stone represents Akari jumping to conclusions and blurting out that I liked guys to everyone. Waya told me you had just come up behind her when she said it." Hikaru placed the Go piece on the board. Just like before the placement seemed to be a bad move, almost random. As Akira put his own stone down he wondered if Hikaru was even paying attention to the game.
"This stone represents the argument we had at the Go parlor where you accused me of playing games with people's hearts." The accompanying 'plink' of the stone as it touched the goban was deafening. The positioning of the stones was well and truly awful. Akira almost cringed. The stones lay like scars across the beautiful game he and Hikaru had been playing. "Three stones laid down that can't be taken back."
"What point are you trying to make, Shindou? What game are you playing?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm playing Go. It's your turn."
Akira's eyes once again narrowed, although the slight tremor in his hands betrayed his uncertainty over exactly what was going on. Then he shook his head. Hikaru was right. The only game he needed to play was Go.
"I... I have nothing." Akira bowed over the board, his hair falling forward to shield his eyes. In the end, it had been a brilliant maneuver, the three poorly placed stones becoming a powerful hand that had ultimately won Hikaru the game. He should have remembered that Hikaru's greatest plays were made derived from his greatest mistakes.
"Thank you for the game."
