Phoenix Universe, fragment part 2
I posted the first part of the fragment earlier today. Here's the second part. I wasn't expecting it to go from angsty to sweet to cute to funny. It just happened that way.

I really like this Universe. Tis fun to play with.

“Ken. Hey Ken, it’s time to get up,” Davis said from on the other side of the room. The dragon didn’t even stir. The phoenix didn’t want to get any closer, the idea of crawling back into bed with Ken was just too tempting, but it didn’t look like he had a choice. “Come on, Ken. It’s almost quarter past eight. You need to get up.”

Slowly, Davis approached the bed. “Ken. Come on Ken, wake up.” He didn’t so much as twitch. With a sigh, Davis reached out and gently nudged Ken’s shoulder. That earned him a sleepy protesting noise and Ken curled into a tighter ball.

So. Very. Cute.

“Ken…” Davis made sure to add that whiny note to his voice that always drove the dragon up the wall. The phoenix sat down on the very edge of the bed in order to get a better angle on poking the dragon in the shoulder. “Get up, Ken.”

The noise Ken made had an annoyed edge to it that made Davis grin. Finally he was getting through. His poking became more insistent. “Keeeeeen. Wakey, wakey. Come on dragon boy. It’s time to get… ACK!”

Phoenixes hadn’t been hunted by anything for nearly a millennia, minor clan wars aside. But Ken was a predator and Davis was a prey animal, even if he’d never actually been prey. He should have instincts that let him know when Ken was about to pounce dammit.

Hands fisted into the phoenix's clothes and yanked him down onto the bed. Ken shifted his weight till his body was pinning Davis. Then his hands gripped Davis's wrists, holding them to the mattress. Ken's growl deepened. His eyes were the narrowest of blue-violet slits.

His parents, his entire clan, had assured Davis that marrying a stronger, larger predator was perfectly fine. There was nothing to worry about. Dragons did not view their mates as prey. Which was all well and good as long as the dragon in question realized that the person he was growling at was his mate and not some annoyance that needed to be ripped to shreds.

"Ken..." Davis said, trying to keep his voice calm. The dragon's growl deepened. The phoenix saw no recognition in those slitted eyes. Suddenly Ken leaned forward. "Eep."

Davis tried to struggle but Ken shifted to keep him still. The growling took on a whiny quality as Ken nuzzled the side of Davis's neck. The phoenix let out a breath. He wasn't about to be torn to bits. Ken recognized him.

"Ken..." Davis tried again. The dragon on top of him nipped hard, teeth digging into the side of his neck without breaking skin. Barely. Davis drew in a sharp breath, but quieted. Slowly, Ken's growl turned into something resembled a purr.

Once he was convinced that Davis was not going to move and was not going to be noisy, Ken released his wrists. The dragon arranged himself on top Davis. His face was buried in the phoenix's throat, his legs tangled with Davis's, his hand resting on lean stomach. A few seconds later, Ken's breathing evened out into sleep. He was still purring faintly.

Which left Davis with a slight problem. Every time he so much as twitched, Ken would growl. But he had an exam in less than thirty minutes. This was not good.

Twenty minutes later, Davis finally managed to extract himself from the bed. Ken immediately curled around a convenient pillow, his growl softening into a purr once more. Figures. He was just a substitute for a pillow.

"No more all-nighters for you," Davis whispered. If Ken wanted to get up in time to make it to class, he could get himself out of bed. Davis couldn't afford to be pinned again. No matter how tempting. "I love you."

Ken's purr seemed to get louder for a second.

Davis forced himself to turn around and leave.

If the professor so much as said a word, Davis was going to tell him the truth. He was late because his husband wanted nookie. The old man might have a heart attack, but at least he wouldn't give him shit about being late.

With one last fond look at Ken, the phoenix left the room.

You know, I think this is the first time Davis has told Ken he loved him. And Ken was asleep for it!

there are going to be more parts right? Ack, it's rude to ask that before saying "love it to death. they're too cute." I love the whole dragon/phoenix thing going on.

Now can I demand you write more?

If you look through my memories, you'll find the other parts to this story (I think I have all keyworded as phoenix). And yes, there will be more. I'm writing it in bits and pieces, so I can't exactly guarentee the order though. ^^;

*squeak* AWWW! :) Oh, that was wonderful! Ken pinned Davis to the bed! How could that be bad? Well... it might be bad if he actually wanted to tear him to shreds...

By the way, I thought that was a nice touch, explaining a little bit about the dragon/phoenix thing in there. It's nice to get these little facts. ^_~

Poor Davis. I really wish I could be there when he gives his prof *that* as an excuse. *grin* I'll bet that would disrupt the exam atmosphere just a bit. ;)

The part with where he told Ken he loved him was wonderful, too - even if Ken was asleep. :) Davis loves Ken! YAY!

Now... Ken has to say it back.

I can see so clearly Davis telling the professor his reason for being late. Its this older guy too. He turns bright red, sputters a bit, and then tells Davis to have a seat he'll over look it this time. I mean really, who's going to argue with an excuse like that?

I may write the scene where Ken tells Davis he loves him. I've got two possible ideas of how that happens and am trying to decide between the two. One builds on this particular scene and one happens later on in the story. Hrm... decisions, decisions.
