I was duplicating some hard drives and then moving them around from where Linux expected them to be, and this rescue/boot/educational CD came in very handy: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

zomg I'm setting up my new MacBook Pro using the VoiceOver option. It's so calm and soothing! I could do this with my eyes closed. In fact, I am.

This is my first ever Apple computer. So far, I am rating it 10 out of 10 for Out of Box Experience! On first boot it played a music video at me and I *didn't mind!* It was actually pretty swank.

You know those experiments they do where you wear these goggles for a while that make everything look upside down?

now with kittens!

Unfortunately, it'll cost you ~$32 to read the findings on how best to construct said goggles.

Yahoo squish

Feb. 9th, 2008 | 02:44 pm
mood: bitchy bitchy

The whole Microsoft-pursuing-Yahoo idea seems absurd to me. From the perspective of an end-user and armchair economist, I mean.

From an end-user perspective, Microsoft would, based on past experiences, assimilate Yahoo's features and make them harder to find and cumbersome to use. (And require a "Passport" -- with all that implies.)

From an armchair economist perspective, I'm getting tired of seeing mergers where two companies combine to form one company that promptly ends up being valued about the same as it was pre-merger. Microsoft bear hug, Yahoo *squish*. No matter what premium they pay.

I agree with some of the analysts in the papers who have implied that the real significance of this is that Microsoft contains a current or incipient empty space that's Yahoo-sized.

EDIT: forgot to include the humorous link that was the reason I felt like posting this in the first place: http://daringfireball.net/2008/02/yahoo_translation

GSM Palm Centro smartphone

mood: lolcat lolcat

Until now, the Palm Centro has only been available with CDMA technology from Sprint. (I HAS HAD WAN 4 WHILE NAO AN IT GUD.)

Palm UK today announced the GSM Centro release in Europe on February 14th.

Palm says to expect the Centro smartphone rolled out on a second carrier in the USA prior to the end of February.
There are rumors that that would be AT&T.

Urinalysis, Mr. Spock?

OMG.

He gave the address of a sewage treatment plant:

Abbey Road

(that's Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland)

He's also running a work-from home scam at that same phone number:
http://www.getjob.us/usa-jobs-view/job-posting-11277.html

There, he gives his name as "John Mark".
john = client of a prostitute
mark = the victim of a confidence game or magic trick

Brightly-colored machine tools

mood: curious curious

So today I did heavy programming stuff in the X Window System (X Protocol Version 11) and SDL (particularly the event system) on Ubuntu Linux (in the GNU debugger), and some tinkering with development tools on Mac OS X 10.4.

I like my job. I get to do such random things.

KDevelop mystery

Nov. 13th, 2007 | 11:56 am
location: Roxor
mood: annoyed annoyed

when compiling a project in KDevelop, compiler errors (with the corresponding file and line number) appear in the 'Messages' window in red text. You can then conveniently click on them and the IDE will open that file and jump to that line with the error.

Very handy!

Except some of my KDevelop projects don't do this, and I can't tell why. You click, but nothing happens.

Money as Debt

This seems to bring together a lot of things I knew individually to be true about money, but hadn't really considered all together:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9050474362583451279

I'd be interested in hearing any comments. The simplest things seem to inspire controversy -- people get labeled as crackpots even when they're just referring people to primary sources, definitions, and written laws. There's too much la la la I can't hear you in the world.
