| | ditzy | ] | It’s been a while since I’ve posted, again for the usual combination of laziness on my part in keeping up an online presence, and a hectic work and life schedule.
Since that last time I’ve seen Wall E, which I enjoyed greatly, even with my friend K pointing out to me that it is at heart the same loser dude wins hot chick story line that I normally loathe.
I’ve also seen Mama Mia. It was a sold out performance filled with the exact same audience from Sex in the City. I liked the movie and had a fun time watching it, which according to most critics is impossible since it’s supposed to be horrifically bad. Then again, the reviewers I’ve read spent half of their reviews trying to justify why it’s OK that they might possibly somehow like ABBA even though they are “mindless ear-worm pop of the worse type.”
A neurotic attitude towards ABBA combined with a need to preserve your hip status probably doesn’t incline you towards enjoying a fluffy musical filled with their music. All I expected out it was a fun little flick and that’s exactly what it was. Unusually, I might even like it better than the stage show, though that probably has something to do with my liking Merryl Streep. It also helps that whats-her-name is a good enough actor that I didn’t spend the entire time thinking that Sophie was a huge spoiled brat and jerk as I did when watching it on stage.
John and I went to Solvang for a weekend to visit some out of country friends who are in California for a couple of weeks. It was a good time, and I even went wine tasting for the first time, though not being much of a wine drinker, I had more fun at a gourmet foodie place we went to to do an olive oil tasting.
This past weekend also included a beach birthday party at Huntington Beach for one of the nieces. It was an interesting party in that teenage birthday girl and friends wanted to spend as much time as possible away from the ‘camp’ filled with parents and family, but at the same time, that’s were all the food was, so they kept coming back to forage, then disappear.
This was also where a four year old gave me a concussion... well OK, maybe not really. What happened was that this was young Teresa’s first time at the beach and somehow I ended up being the one who took her out into the water. We weren't swimming, the water was too rough for that, just playing in the incoming waves. An extra large wave came in and when I said JUMP Teresa! she didn’t and got a mouthful of saltwater. I leaned over her and told that the next time I said jump, to jump... So, she did. Right into my head. She was fine and thought that conking Uncle Nico on the head was the funniest thing ever. On the other hand, I had a headache for the rest of the day.
Post head conking turned into my lifting her out of the water whenever a wave came near us, which she loved, but eventually made me tired, so I told her that were going to play a new game. This involved us siting on the same and waiting for the strongest of waves to reach us and get our feet wet. When I invited Teresa’s 2 year old sister to sit down and join us in playing let the water get our feet wet, she looked at the sand, looked at my lap, then chose me as the better seat.
Updates here will continue to be a bit sporadic for the near future since I’ll be headed down to San Diego Con in a couple of days and will only have erratic access to the internets.
Hope all is going well with you mi gente! |

| LOO-ray/Getting Out |
[Jul. 21st, 2008|10:05 pm] |
Started training again this morning, after a two week mostly-break. Was hot as all get-out, but got through it. My next race is in 4 weeks, in Luray Virginia (pronounced “LOO-ray,” not “luh-ray” as you might think), another olympic race, so I have to get prepped for that. Remind me not to take an exercise break after my next breakup, it’s not worth it, even if I am feeling blue.
In other news regarding the breakup, I seem to have gotten some of my tolerance back. Not that this is necessarily a good thing, but it is nice not being completely worthless after having drinks.
I’ve finally managed to break out of some of the isolation I’ve had especially in this two week period, but also to a degree since having moved down to southwest. I’m trying to be more active about getting myself out of the apartment and around folks, and spent a good part of the weekend doing just that. And that’s been fun. I’m not quite sure how I’m going to work in training for all three sports in the tri, but I’ll muddle through somehow. In the meantime, I’m enjoying getting out of the house more, and look forward to more of this.

Since I'm headed out next week for travel/training, then off for vacation - Trainer grrl decided to really push me this week - yesterday I did intervals on the rowing machine, mixed with intervals of handstand pushups. My back feels strong! I think I might have abs down there under the fuzz and slight spare tire.
Today, I deadlifted - first a few sets to warm up and perfect my grip and form - then we did a climbing series of one rep maxes - I maxed out at 305 lbs - I managed to do that weight twice! - but I know I probably have another 20-25 lbs in the tank if I reach for it. grrrrrrrrrrr!
I've crossed some kind of threshold now at four days a week - there are other regulars who are there at least as often as me - one of them started saying 'hey' to me - big tall really buff guy - with a very boyish face. The 'hey' transitioned into 'dude' after a couple of weeks - then earlier this week, when I was doing olympic clean n' jerks the greeting became 'nice set dude.'

[Jul. 17th, 2008|10:46 pm] |
As has been the case the previous times I’ve been on DC jury duty, I didn’t even get called back to a panel to get rejected, just sat in the lounge and eventually was let go. Not that I imagine I’d ever actually be allowed to serve - young, white gay male attorney. Yeah, not so much wanted by parties on juries.
Did get a couple inches done on the next hat I’m knitting. Had a couple people ask about it, that was it. May have found an entertainment center I like, too (dropped into apartment zero after they released us). Then it was home to nap. And that’s been about it today. At least work doesn’t have to lose me another day this week - the blackberry was going nuts all day.

Ж-Men...but not the ones you might expect! This week LJ Russia launched Ж-Men, a new comedy series about superheroes, inspired by the LJ communities dedicated to superheros, comics and cartoons. The title's "Ж" comes from ЖЖ, the nickname for LiveJournal in Russia.
Ж-Men's script is written by a group of LJ enthusiasts who also happen to be television professionals. Who knew? Following the premiere, five more episodes will be broadcast over the next two weeks. We hope you find the series fresh and enjoyable.
This is, of course, an experiment for LiveJournal. As always, we'd love to hear what you think! |

| Do Your Duty |
[Jul. 17th, 2008|12:04 am] |
I completely forgot I have jury duty today, until I got home from seeing Hellboy II with Steve. UGH. Thank heavens for the work Blackberry so I could email the folks I had meetings with to let them know why I wouldn’t be there. But, damn, what a pain.
Keep your fingers crossed that my usual luck on sitting them out is still in effect.
