2:16 pm - Moving!
|
So I'm moving. Well I'm not actually moving, but my blog is. I've had several blogs, with this being the longest, recently I've been writing and then posting it in both this blog and the blog my wife and I share, so now I'm finally moving to one concise blog. And I've got my own Domain Name, my first.
So head on over to The CineManiac. There you will find some back dated entries from this very blog, and a couple of new entries. I plan to use the site to review movies, discuss what is coming out in theaters each week and which ones I think are worth seeing, review the current weeks set of DVD releases, and more. I look forward to seeing you there.
Also the site is still under construction and the design is going to change over the next few weeks/months, so any ideas/comments/questions are welcomed.

9:01 am - Movies I saw in 2006!
|
Yes I realize the year is not yet over, but I decided to take a gander at the release date calendar and figure out every movie I saw in 2006. The number was a bit under my estimate, but quite a bit none the less. I have four lists 1) Movies Released in 2006 that I saw Theatrically 2) Movies Not Released in 2006 that I saw Theatrically (read free screenings) 3) Movies I plan to see before the year is over 4) Movies released in 2006 that I saw on DVD.

9:53 am - Hello Again!
|
So It's been almost a month since my last post, but I promise, there's a reason for that, several in fact. Since my last post I've been very busy, whether it's getting up at 4:15 (in the morning) to get in line to get my Wii on the first day (Yes, I got one!!!) or flying back to Texas for Thanksgiving, Seeing a couple of movies, one a Political Propaganda Film disguised as a Kids movie, the other the best action movie not only of the year, but possibly of the decade. or celebrating Jeri's Birthday, or studying for finals, as I've been doing, for what seems like every waking moment for the past 2 weeks. But finally I'm back, (I'm taking a break from studying for a few minutes, since I've just finished my outline for tomorrow's test and need a few minutes before I start committing 12 pages of legal material to memory), and this one might be a bit long, so follow me by clicking on the link below.

7:18 am - Wii!!!
|
I played the Wii (pronounced We) for the first time yesterday and it was amazing! For those of you who don't know, the Wii is the new gaming console from Nintendo that comes out this Sunday. Now for some of you are probably thinking video games are no big deal and that you don't care, but you're wrong. The entire marketing behind this new system is aimed at non-gamers, especially non-gamers over 40.

Now I know that sounds weird, why would Nintendo spend money marketing towards people who aren't even going to buy this, well once you have seen it you just might. The Wii is a revolution in gaming, instead of a typical controller you use the Remote, or Wiimote as some are calling it, The Wiimote, as seen below, is shaped like a television remote and is strapped to the wrist, there are about 4 buttons total, two towards the bottom, one big on towards the top, a directional pad, and a trigger in the back. Now all that looks different, but the real revolution is that the controller is motion sensitive. If you're bowling you move your hand just like you're really bowling and the ball will move the same way, if you're playing baseball you pitch or swing the ball much like you would in an actually ballgame and the characters on the screen do the same.

Now if you're playing a game like boxing you can attach the Nunchuk, seen below with the Wiimote, and hold the Wiimote in your dominant hand and the nunchuk in your other hand. Too punch you punch with your hands, to block you pull your hands up to your face, the more force behind you're punch the more powerful the punch on screen.

There are even more games out there, I played Excite Truck, a racing game, and you turn the Wiimote sideways in your hand and steer like you would a car, if you want to go left you steer left, if you want to go right you steer right, the only button you have to push is for gas, there's even an attachment that comes with a couple of other racing games, shaped like a steering wheel, you place the Wiimote in the center and you only use the steering wheel, to go faster you slant the steering wheel forward, to slow down you pull it back, and the rest is just like steering a car.
Now the Wii comes with one game, Wii Sports, which includes the aforementioned baseball, bowling, and boxing, plus tennis and golf, which are played much like the real sport. I also got to play the new Zelda game, where you use the Wiimote as your sword, slashing and attacking just as you do, and the nunchuk as your shield.
All in all the games were awesome and the whole experience was a gamers Nirvana. Personally I started looking into the Wii last week and changed my X-mas list from money for a Video iPod to money for a Wii. But I've found out that the Wii will likely be hard to find for a while after X-Mas, so I'm going out this Sunday, early morning, to try and find myself a Wii during the opening day rush. If I'm successful, it will be part X-mas gift from Jeri, and part from money I've been saving for this, but ti will remain wrapped under the tree until Christmas (mainly so i actually study for Finals) So wish me luck this Sunday as I venture out at about 5am to find myself what might possibly be the Greatest Gaming Invention Ever!!! Also you can check out a commercial for the Wii here: http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2006/11/15/first-wii-commercial-from-dancing-with-the-stars/ and learn more at www.wii.com

9:17 am - Slither
|
Last night was the Slither Screening at Grauman's Chinese 6 in Hollywood. The movie started at 7:30 so I wanted to be in line by 6 to make sure I got a good seat. So instead of coming home and then heading to the theater 5 mins later, I went straight from work to hollywood. I ended up getting to Hollywood and Highlands at about 4:30, so I grabbed some dinner and watched Monday's episode of Heroes, which by the way once again managed to Blow My Mind!!! Fabulous!. I then went looking for a Sharpie so that I could get a couple of autographs, perferably a Silver sharpie, but the only place around with any Permanent markers was Virgin and all they had were small markers to write on DVD's, but I got them since this was all there was. So about 5:45 I headed up to get in line. I was about 6th in line and sat down with my magazine to relax. I read for awhile, then got in a conversation with some of my line neighbors about television shows and movies. Now the Slither Screening was a part of a Horror Movie Festival going on at the theater and so there were several tables set up with brochures and people working the festival. at about 6:30 I glanced over to one of the tables and saw a face I recognized, John Gullager. 9:32 pm - Slither Event
|
Ok so Tuesday Night Slither is showing at Grauman's 6 in Hollywood. Slither is a Wonderful B Horrow Movie Starring the Amazing Nathan Fillion from Firefly/Serenity. It's a special event commemorating the release of the DVD. Now Nathan Fillion is going to be at the screening, among others. It's an invitation only screening, and I have an invitation, on it it states it's for 2 people but I was told to bring as many people as I wanted. Currently I'm going alone, I don't have alot of friends who like B horror movies and the ones that too can't come, so this is an open invitation to anyone that wants to come to join me at Graumans Tuesday Night. It's a first come first seated kinda thing, so we have to get there early, it starts at 7:30 so probably around 6, 6:30. Anyone can met me in line. But I need to know how many people want to come, if it's just me I might not go. So if you want to come, or can come please respond to this so I can print off enough passes and so I can know who to look for. Travis.

1:15 pm - WATCH VERONICA MARS TONIGHT!!!
|
That's about all I have to say, Just WATCH VERONICA MARS TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have never seen the show, give it a chance, tonight the show basically starts over, and is the perfect jumping on point for newbies. So please help save the best show on Television and watch tonight. I know some people will tell you it's a teen show, it's not. This show is THE BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION! Yes, it's better than Lost, Better than Grey's Anatomy (although this is my new 2nd favorite pushing Lost to 3rd!), Better than Doctor Who, Better than Dexter (Although that was a heck of a pilot episode), better than Heroes or Studio 60. It's simply The Best Show On Television! If you don't believe me, give it a try, the worst that could happen, you don't enjoy the show, which I highly doubt. Even if you don't think it's the greatest show on TV like I do, chances are good you will still really enjoy it, so please prove me wrong and watch tonight!

10:29 am - Go Dodgers!
|
So I've never been a big sports fan, I don't follow any teams, and never watch any sports on TV, except the yearly Super Bowl (but mainly for commercials). I have always enjoyed going to Live sporting events though, I have been to many Texas Rangers baseball games over the years as I grew up (my dad loves the Rangers, so we'd go when we could, which living 6 hours away wasn't too often but usually at least 1 a season), I've been to a MEts game, an Astros game, an Angels game, 1 Dallas Cowboys game, my only NFL experience, 1 Dallas Mavericks game, my only NBA experience, and several minor league hockey games (and one professional game in Canada, but not NHL), but usually never more than one game a season. And I NEVER followed any teams, never checked stats, followed the games, etc. Until Recently.
July 3rd, 2005 my wife and I were visiting Malibu to find a place to live, and were invited to go with the local church to go to that nights Dodgers Game with them and stay for the fireworks, little did I know that I would soon be attending alot more games. We didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to the game and mainly talked to some new people.
11 months passed us by and this past June we went on a work retreat for Jeri's job and one of our stops was a Dodgers game, we enjoyed it, I followed the game abit more and Jeri discovered No. 55, Russel Martin, the teams new catcher (he joined the team May 5th as a rookie) and thought he was hot. (Which is fine because I've been crushing on Veronica Mars' Kristen Bell for quite sometime now. And just so you know we are both okay with each other having a crush on some celebrity) We attended another game on July 4th, again with the campus church, and agin we loved the game.
Jeri started to follow the Dodgers a bit more and I didn't really care still. We attended a game at the beginning of August with my parents, 10 innings and only 1 run, a walk-off home run by Good Old Number 55, Russel Martin. Suddenly Jeri couldn't get enough and I was starting to care a bit more. We each bought a Russel Martin T-shirt (Which we had to make on the MLB website, as the Dodgers' don't sell them at the games yet) and then towards the end of August we attended 3 games in one week. That Tuesday we attended the 16 inning win by the Dodgers staying the whole time until 12:30am. Friday we attended the Labor day weekend game with our church featuring a great 80s themed Fireworks show. and Saturday we went with Jeri's friend who was in from out of town and new couple that moves to town recenlt which Jeri knew from High School.
Since then we've wtched several games on TV, I check out the scores and stats each day and we Tivo the games in case we miss them. Sunday we attended another game with my best friend Jon, where although they lost Russel Martin hit another home run, and tonight we are going to yet another game. It's been a fun time, and I can't believe that I care about a sports team this much.
My only regret, I almost bought tickets, not once, but twice, to Monday Night's game. Which was quite possibly the best game of the season! 4 consecutive runs to tie in the 9th inning!!! In case you didn't know, this is only the 4th time 4 consecutive home runs have EVER been hit in Major League Baseball History!!!! and the last time it happened was 1963! Dodgers made history on Monday night!
There's talk of going tomorrow night because the Dodgers are looking to break their record for most fans in a single season at tomorrow nights game, and anyone who buys a ticket will get a free ticket to a 2007 game! But we will for sure be attending the game on Saturday. For Jeri's birthday (which isn't until December, but this is what she wanted!) I bought us tickets behind home plate 12 rows back! So it should be a great time, pictures from several of the games to come!
SO GOOOO DODGERS!!!!!!!!

12:11 pm - The Class!
|
So tonight the new Television Season Officially Starts. I could tell you to watch Studio 60, because it's great but everyone is going to be saying to watch that so I don't feel the need to talk about it. But I do have another recommendation, The Class. The Class is CBS' new sitcom being paired with How I Met Your Mother (The best sitcom of last season, i would argue Earl is not a sitcom, but just a comedy so don't start on that point) I've seen the Pilot and was at the Taping of Episode 2 and I laughed quite abit. But I will admit it's not as funny as How I Met Your Mother, Friends, or any of the sitcoms that pop into your head. But don't let that stop you from watching. It's got several great characters (although a couple are annoying, the others make up for it) But don't let the shortcomings of the first few episodes deter you. Why, you might ask, should I keep watching a show that's not AMAZING from the first episode? Because if you don't, and don't convince others to do the same, the show will probably be canceled. Why, you're asking yourself again, do I care if a show that's not AMAZING gets canceled? Because shows these days don't get a chance, if they don't do well for a couple of weeks they're gone. And that matters because if you look back at some of the best shows ever on TV you'll see that most of them didn't hit their stride for several episodes, and in some cases several seasons. Go back and look at the first season of Friends. The first couple of episodes were not that great compared with the rest of the show, they were slow to build the characters and make the show what we all remember it to be. Do the same with Seinfeild. This show was brillant, but it didn't really hit it's stride until season 4. Season 1 was only a few episodes and wasn't anything to brag about, and the 2nd and 3rd seasons although better weren't the "Show About Nothing" we all came to know and love. If you want something more recent look at The Office. Luckily NBC gave it a chance and it's become brilliant, but it's first couple of episodes left something to be desired. So I'm saying please, give The Class a chance for a few weeks and see if it's someting you could like. Stick with it a while, you never know it may just be the new Friends.

|
So I drove over to Hollywood lastnight to see Ghostbusters on the big screen for the first time in my life! I left at 4 because the movie started at 8:00pm and I could leave at 4 and get there at 5:20 or leave at 5:20 and get there at about 8, so I got there at 5:20 and read for a class, and then walked over to Borders. ( A wonderful Night! )

2:01 pm - Ghostbusters & Celeb Sightings
|
So I drove over to Hollywood lastnight to see Ghostbusters on the big screen for the first time in my life! I left at 4 because the movie started at 8:00pm and I could leave at 4 and get there at 5:20 or leave at 5:20 and get there at about 8, so I got there at 5:20 and read for a class, and then walked over to Borders. <lj-cut text="
I walked around and checked out some stuff mainly magazines and started flipping through one and saw an articel on a movie I havn't seen in years (but one I've thought of a few times in the last year for some strange reason) That movie is one of the biggest disappointments in cinema history and one of the first movies I can remember seeing in theaters, Howard the Duck. Now I know this movie is not something everyone looks back on with found memories, but I do. I can remember going to see this with my brother, and i think a couple of my cousins (I was 5, so my memory isn't that great) But I can remember thinking it was a fun movie, until Prinicpal Rooney from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, turned into a freaking monster, which scared my little 5 year old self half to death. But still one of the first movies I remember seeing in theaters (on a side note, another of the first movies I ever remember seeing in theaters was "Romancing the Stone" which just came out on DVD, I may have to buy that one) Anyways, I read the article, which got me really excited about the movie, especially when i saw that it was out on DVD on Region 1!!!!! So we'll see where that goes!!!!
After that I walked over to Ameoba Music (which for those that don't know is an old school record store, huge and has tons of new and used CDs, records, and DVDs a wonderland of entertainment. While there I picked up a DVD for the wife and the "Jack of All Trades: Complete Series" for myself, both were super cheap, and as I love all things Bruce Campbell I was excited about the show (which admittedly I've only seen a couple of episodes of, but it's the Bruce, so it's gotta be great)
So then my best friend/college roommate met me, we grabbed dinner and headed to Mecca, I mean The Arclight!!!
One thing I may have forgot to mention was that when i first got to the Theater i walked inside and noticed that they were having a special event which said: "Welcome Cast and Crew: Crank"
So I tell Grubbs the thing is going on and tell him I'd love to see Jason Statham, and might have to ask him for an auto-mo-graph. So we walk into the theater and there's a group of people standing around, and again I tell Grubbs I hope we see Statham, and Grubbs says "He's right behind you" I turn around and sure enough there surrounded by women is Jason Statham. I hear his freakin awesome British accent and quickly realize, he's much shorter than I expected. I'm just about 6' give or take .5 inches, not really sure, and he was at least 2 or 3 inches shorter than me. I was amazed. Then I turned around and told Grubbs, I can't do it. I just have a block against talking to these people, it's hard for me to walk up to celebrities and say something to them, because if I was famous I'd like to not be disturbed most of the time. So Once again I saw a celeb, was within spitting distance (and I can't spit very far) and walked away, just something I can't do, oh well.
We then went upstairs to go to the bar (the screening was 21 and up, because they serve alcohol!) While Grubbs ordered some alchy-mo-hol I walked over and got a coke for myself, and spotted Lucas Black (the kid from American Gothic, Sling Blade, Friday Night Lights, and most recently Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) then i headed over picked up my "Orange Crush" a martini which really didn't taste good, but it made me feel good!
The movie was funnier than I had remembered and we had a great time. It was an original Print of the movie, and being 22 years olf it looked amazing. It had some scratches and a few places where it skipped for a frame, but overallit looked great and was an amazing experience, I was seeing Ghostbusters on the Big Screen for the First time Ever! It was incredible, and something I will remember for a long time.
I'm out! Hope everyone has a great night, I'm heading home and then to a Dodgers game!

1:19 am - Goodbye Summer! Hello Fall!
|
Tonight I inadvertently celebrated the end of Summer and the beginning of Fall. See monday is my first day of classes, which is disappointing for many reasons, first it means my "Summer of Movies" has come to an end (I'll hopefully post a full count of all the movies I've attended since School got out mid-may), second it means my posts on here will probably decline rapidly, although hopefully I'll still post something once a week or so, but who knows, and third it means I have to go back to class (which in turns means alot of reading, I've already read 110 pages and I still have another 80ish to read today to be ready for Monday!) But tonight I ended the summer in style by seeing the last great Summer movie (for the 2nd time) and followed it up with the First Great Fall Film! ( You say Goodbye, I say Hello! )
