CO2 meter RIP
My Telaire CO2 meter is dead, out-of-warranty, and too expensive to replace. Time to figure out another way to measure carbon dioxide concentrations accurately.

On Vox: This Citay album (Little Kingdom...

This Citay album (Little Kingdom) makes me very happy.  It's like a contemporary version of Led Zeppelin, completely earnest without being cheesy.

todd: Carbon dioxide capture device

This is the second or third iteration of the CO2 capture device I've been working on. The meter reads 170ppm (roughly 360ppm is ambient today): right now the meter reads 92ppm. My meter has been acting up though-- after this run is finished, I need to clean out the whole system, recalibrate, and run the test again.

On Vox: A whole new era of music videos

I love this: who needs an expensive film crew, casting agents, hundreds of extras, when you can just create your own entire music video inside a video game?

I don't play video games very often, so I can't imagine how long it took this person to figure out how to make all the characters dANCE like that. Amazing.

todd: android developer challenge

Well, I just submitted my first Google android application to the Android Developer Challenge. It's called Puluwai, and while I don't think it's a radically new concept in mobile applications, I think it does one thing really well. (Better, possibly, than similar desktop applications.)

Wish me luck, and if you're interested in beta testing that or the iPhone version, please drop me a line. (todd at rawthought dot com )

todd: Golden Book of TED
Is it just me, or does the backdrop for the TED conference resemble those old Golden Book Encyclopedia covers? Regard:

Even so, Al Gore shows some interesting slides about polar ice melting and so forth. The combination of his talk and the backdrop reminds me of the International Geophysical Year, 1957-1958, which was probably the first time that a huge global effort was undertaken to understand our environment. Of course, some of the major funding was from e.g. the Corona spy satellite program, but some great science got done that year.

On Vox: This is contemporary Hawaiian culture

I listen to a salad radio station on Maui (the best reception we get here on the north side of the Big Island) when I'm not listening to the iPodinets.  This station has been advertising one (and only one) concert for the past couple of months, probably because they'll need roughly 5% of the entire population of Maui to attend in order to fill the venue.

Two of the acts are nationally-known artists (though I'm guessing not as popular on the mainland as they might be here): Sean Kingston and Collie Buddz.  The third is a local Maui group, Ekolu.

Near as I can tell, Ekolu is your basic Hawaiian local band.  They play a little bit of everything, they play well, and they sing well. Unlike the SF indie scene, it's hard to imagine a local Hawaiian band doing well if they could not sing well.  Everybody sings here: the local kids are rocking the karaoke machines shortly after they speak their first words.

So it's not surprising that a lot of locals feel inspired to cover Ekolu.  On the couch, with a ukulele, with a NAVY t-shirt:

On the floor, in front of the dog stretching on the couch:

In your bedroom, while you're still learning to play the guitar, in your favorite powder blue sweatshirt:

In your dorm room, too shy to look at the camera:

In the subdivision park, with your cousin playing the guitar, in between cigarettes:

And of course, other local bands are obliged to cover the song, with pretty much the same quality as the amateurs, but with bigger amps and more cousins.
