12:28pm: Cherry Picked records
We're very pleased to announce there is a NEW record shop now open in Bristol. Considering the spate of closures over the last couple of years, this really is worth celebrating!
It's called Cherry Picked, and is situated inside The Croft (just across the road from us Here). As the name suggest, they have a small, hand-picked selection of stock. Expect to find Avant Rock, Jazz, Electronica, Metal, and Soul on lovely vinyl, and CDs too.
Not quite sure of the opening times, but the bar is open during the day, so you can get a drink as well, or hang out on the sofas.

1:36pm:
I don't really want to draw out an already pointless story, but as we're getting a lot of people asking...
To clarify, it was Camilla who spoke to the Mail. She does not work at Here or represent the views of gallery, it's staff or management. She has curated some of our past exhibitions, but we have no control over who she speaks to. I think she has since regretted it, as she says on her blog:
madebymilla.blogspot.com/2008/07/banksy-and-me.html
To be fair, she didn't tell them anything they didn't know. The mail had already come up with the Robin Gunningham name, and only contacted Camilla because she's on the electoral roll as having lived at the same address.
We know several writers, and would NEVER reveal their identities. We DO NOT endorse the Mail or it's views in any way.
sincerely, Ben / Here Gallery

Hi everyone! We hope you all enjoyed the last show and had chance to explore yourself with one of AKI's fantastic kits..If you've completed your kit, please bring it in and we'll pass it onto AKI for you. From Tuesday 1st July – Sat 26th July you can experience curator Gavin Maitlands show of new contemporary drawings. Featuring French is an already well-known illustrator based in London. He has skilfully managed to combine the three things he loves most in his life and make them into a career: Drawing, Heavy Metal and Skateboarding. His highly detailed drawings of Goat-headed axe-wielding maniacs and dead black metal singers have earned French shows all over the world including, most recently at Giant Robot in L.A. Woo! Go see: www.tapedcopies.com David Galletly is an illustrator and Graphic designer currently based in Stirling. He adorns pieces of cardboard with beautiful little one liners and freaky looking people. Like a half-remembered nightmare from your childhood. He just got back from a solo show in Philadelphia and we are stoked to have him on board for this show. Visit his website at: www.galletly.blogspot.com Simen Helsvig is a conceptual, time-based drawer who once re-wrote an entire book in pencil only to rub it all out and display those rubbings. When he not working as a Prison Guard in Oslo, Norway Simen mostly spends his time covering entire pages in millions of tiny hand-drawn dots. Check out: www.simenhelsvig.com Salome Oggenfuss is an outsider with an insiders view. Originally from Switzerland she’s currently slumming it in New York since graduating from the Glasgow School of Art last year. Salome has received a lot of attention for her absurdist Brautigan-esgue poetry and sublime photographs from America’s Wasteland. It’s a pleasure to have her, but who knows what she’ll turn up with. Try: www.salomeoggenfuss.com Anna Peaker is an illustrator, designer and sometimes printmaker based in Leeds. She likes pattern, shape, repetition and weirdo graphics. 10:47am: Art Kits International 'here, there, everywhere' Opens Tuesday 3rd June
Hi everyone! Art Kits International 'here, there, everywhere' Opens Tuesday 3rd June - Sat 28 June During the last couple of months, when folks were tucked up in their beds, the art collective Art Kits International have been creeping through the streets at nightfall distributing the `Here, There, Everywhere' self-exploration kits. Across the land, members of the unsuspecting public have stumbled upon these unusual packages resting on lonely benches, hanging from budding trees and sat waiting expectantly asking to be picked up and taken home. Once inside, the inquisitive finder discovers a pack inviting them to spend some time exploring their minds and lives through the production of creative works. Art Kits International devised this kit to celebrate the fascinating lives of those who inhabit this world yet whose minds are known to few. Art Kits International thought it a shame that all these wonderful feelings, opinions and experiences should go unexplored and hidden from view. From the 3rd – 28th June, the pieces created by these adventurous folk will be displayed in Bristol's Here Gallery for members of the public to explore the minds and lives of the incidental creators. Visitors to the gallery will also be invited to contribute to the exhibition by creating their own pieces using kits held in the gallery. Following the exhibition, the pieces will be collected and buried across the country along with a burial card containing a message from its creator. Like long lost treasure, the pieces will eventually be found to offer the new finder a glimpse into the creators life on this planet. Art Kits International are a group of interventionalist artists working primarily in the South West of England. We create and distribute kits for strangers to stumble upon which invite them to create a range of pieces, including visual art, music and writings through a pack of ideas and materials. We work anonymously, usually distributing the kits under the cloak of darkness and we do not inform anyone as to where or when they will be left. As a group, we believe that art should be accessible and exciting for all, especially for those who do not have a background in the arts or who feel isolated by the artistic practices they see around them. We are excited by the world around us and we endeavour to create kits that encourage those who find them to interact with the world in a way that they may not have considered before. For more information, please visit www.artkits.co.uk Also on Saturday 28th June 12-4 we'll be hosting a craft fair organised by the lovely Camilla Stacey featuring works from some amazing local artists. Lastly..... Are you handy with html? www.thingsfromhere.co.uk is looking a bit tired and is in dire need of an overhaul, do you or anyone you know want to volunteer to take this project on? If so get in touch by emailing us at gallery@thingsfromhere.co.uk See you all soon!!

1:07pm: KEV GREY: EVERLASTING ARMS opens 1st May
You are invited to the opening reception for Kev Grey's exhibition: Everlasting Arms, on Thursday 1st May 6.00- 9.00pm For nearly ten years, Kev Grey's hand-drawn, nostalgic, black & white illustrations have combined his love and fascination for classic tattoo flash, vintage rock & roll imagery, and pin-up girls. Resulting in his crisp, clean drawing style, which is a nod to the past but with a modern and often macabre twist. For his new show entitled 'Everlasting Arms' at Bristol's Here Gallery, Kev has produced a new series of illustrations which are both humorous and gothic (in the original sense of the word), including drawings of tough, tattooed pin-up girls who could drink you under the table, burlesque beauties to tease and please, bloody daggers, manic skulls, saucy snakes, and Lady Britannia as you've never seen her before! Exhibition continues until Fri 30th May Opening hours: Tues – Sat 10.30am – 6.30pm (5.30pm Sat) Closed Sundays and Mondays Admission free

9:03pm: Zombizi's ‘pictures on the wall of the Here Gallery’ opens fri 07/03/08
Hi Come and join us for drinks this Friday March 7th 7-10 PM! Duration: March 8 – 29 Zombizi is a visual artist working primarily in the photographic medium, with digital manipulations done post production. Included in this exhibition will be approximately twenty works of mostly photographic prints from several series, alongside new work. Zombizi's work, which can be visceral, funny and poignant by turn, has been gaining a steady following over the internet. The artist's main subject is himself, and through this ageing, mortality, and the relationship of the flesh to the self. More recently however, the gaze has widened to include distorted and manipulated pictures of both other people and of raw meat (often combined with horrific effect). Several pieces are portraits from the series "Portraits of People I have Never Met” in which the artist manipulates images sent to him via e-mail. These collaborations play with the notion of relationships in the internet age. The result is fascinating, flattering and unflattering at the same time and calls to mind Andy Warhol's portraits of famous people from the 1970's and 80's. Like Warhol these images are made using a mechanical process and convey a distance and intimacy at the same time. From the series Just Offal are several images of various organs from pigs and chickens photographed on a stark white background in excruciating detail. The result is beautiful and pure and not the slightest bit repulsive; they also reflect the artist's political views, the relationship of meat and self, of the objectification of animals and our relationship with the natural world. His work also calls to mind Matthew Barney, his medium of animal organs rather than petroleum, the photographs evoke a documentation of a performance. This exhibition offers a rare chance to see these digital works in the flesh, and with some dark surprises promised should prove an entertaining insight into the bloody world of Zombizi.

7:18am: 'Abracadabra' show opening Tuesday 6th November 6-9pm!!
Hello everyone!
'Abracadabra' Drawing, Embroidery and Ceramics By Cindy Jaswal, Claire Platt and Camilla Stacey Opens this Tuesday night from 6-9 pm, so come join us for drinks!
Cindy Jaswal lives in Vancouver where she makes mixed-media art, including pen and ink drawings, paintings, printmaking, handmade books, and photography. Throughout her work she takes inspiration from the natural world, paying particular attention to the place where the land and sea meet, having spent much of her time carefully observing these areas in and around Vancouver and Vancouver Island. For ‘abracadabra’ Cindy has created a series of drawings based on the sea shacks that are found in her local area, a kind of Canadian version of the beach hut. This is Cindy’s first exhibition in the UK.
Claire Platt graduated from the Drawing and Applied Arts Degree at UWE earlier this year and now lives and works in London. Her work is primarily concerned with the 'female' language of stitch and its decorative qualities. She plays with a recognised formal portrait format and anatomical drawings, hoping to engage the viewer in questioning recognition of their own body and their similarities with others. For this exhibition Claire will be showing her embroideries based on the body, and new work that responds to an interest in aircraft.
Camilla Stacey is one of the founders of here shop and gallery who ran away to live by the seaside in Weston-super-Mare. Working with found objects, ceramics, print and textiles she creates work that is influenced by ideas of memory, perception and obsessive collections. For ‘abracadabra’ Camilla will be creating a new piece of work, using a combination of found ceramic figurines and plaster multiples. This is the first time Camilla has shown her own work at the gallery.
All three artists met on-line, and are interested in the collaborations that this can bring about- and the fact that despite working in very traditional ‘craft’ media, it is the high-tech world of the internet that has made this exhibition possible
See you all soon!
