TNT, DINAH-MITE!
So tonight robby and I went to go see the best show in town. The Texas Roller Girls. And they were FUCKING AMAZING! It was held at a rollerskating rink, that is changed into a land of Lonestar beer,disco lights, and twinkling track lights.
Robby and I were psyched to go, and when we arrived we hit a fever pitch in excitement. We plopped ourselves down in the front row at 6:30 and until 10:30 that is where we remained (saving two bathroom breaks, and a nacho run..of course). The first match was between the Hell Marys and The Hotrod Honeys. There was a long intro which was very over the top and yet delicious, and then they took off...and carnage was the name of the game.
Girls were flying into the audience, and pivoting, and jamming, and blocking to the joy of us all. It's great because it's like being at a hockey game that can actually run into you. I mean this shit is not fake. You watch one gal just skating like a mad man and then someone whizzes by her and rams into her side and she falls, and you see blood. And you eat that fucking shit up. Like the Honeys would form a line that the jammer couldn't break through, and so someone would take one for the team and try to break through and would just get slammed.
The next match-up was between the Honkey Tonk Heartbreakers and the Hustlers. And that is when we met my fav lady of the night Dinah Mite. She was such a bad ass, she was like totally into the pure sport, she was so determined and she excelled at every position. She was tough, fast, and streamlined. Whatever else she does in line is shit, this is her calling. Watching her this game, for us was like what it must have felt like to watch michael jordan play b-ball before he hit it big. She's a superstar. (and she had a really cute toddler, who was next to us, with her mom). On a funny side note, a lot of roller girl mom's have shirts that say things like mother f*cker on them. Like mother like daughter.
The Heartbreakers and Hell Marys ended up winning their matches, and Grupo Fantasma played at the half time. HOW BAD ASS IS THAT. I love grupo.
So now officially roller derby is my new fav sport, and for once I am proud to be a texan because we brought this shit back.
