(notacon) wheeeeeee!
Notacon was fun. my team (me, tod, david, and a friend of his) totally kicked ass w/ the scavenger hunt. krnlpanik was very amused when we "found his car." i also got to sing a docapella song for the talent show. tyger was amused because it sounded so familiar. and tyger and froggy didn't smoke!!! woo!! i got some kind of nifty loot too, but not as much stuff as last year. anyone want a shell account for 3 months? i don't know if i'll use it, but it was the best prize i could get from the talent show. the packetsniffer's t-shirt i think i'll keep though. i guess it's hard to get as cool of stuff as 2 autographed books by Eric Meyer (which i got last year). ah well. maybe next year i should help collect cool stuff to give away as prizes. preferably non- Microsoft stuff. (:

other highlights: the speakers were cool and fun. Steph the geek had a cute Canadian accent. the AI bots shown in Eldan and Sean's talk were so cute, i want one. the guy from cool cleveland was really nice and fun to talk to. a couple of people not attending the con bought a shirt, because they like getting shirts from stuff that they don't know much about or didn't attend. drendar tap-danced very cutely. i found out that drew curtis can make a living off of fark. impressive. the pizza party sponsored by SynAck labs was a great way to meet some of the other con-goers. tyger got her bubble tea, and irkdub got his wendy's. and irkdub paid for his wendy's (which i wasn't expecting, but hey, who am i to argue? *evil grin*). as far as i know, most talks happened. there was only one technical mishap in videotaping the talks for the entire weekend. i need to see the batmud talk and the photography talks when the dvd comes out. oh, and the shwag was pretty cool. i like my new hat and am wearing the green shirt today. i wonder if anyone will notice.

things i want to see next year: the professional track on friday sounds like it went well, and i hope it happens again since i think more people will be able to get work to let them attend. i wish i could have attended, but i was either in class, or helping out. i'll have to watch the talks later. i also want to see the talentless talent show and the scavenger hunt happen again. oh, and the anything but ethernet contest too. i wish i'd been able to see the two entries in action. i also think it might be neat to have an "art made out of technology" thing, either as a competition or just a showcase. the photography was cool, but i'm envisioning artistic sculptures constructed out of hardware, geeky clothing with things like cd's or hard-drive platters encorporated, scsi cable belts, geeky pun art (like the red hat i wore friday with "own this box" on it), etc. also, the pizza party went so well, i think something similar would be cool to bring people together and talk. oh, and i wonder if there would be any interest in geeky shwag boxers/panties or other non-t-shirt items. maybe notacon tote bags? not sure if it'd be worth the money to make unless there's clear interest in it though. maybe it might be a fun project if i want to set up a cute craftsy table o geek gear to show off and/or sell. *ponders*

things i don't want to see next year: scary incidents like what almost happened during the midnight mixer. froggy and tyger in debt after the con (come on people! you know you want to go to notacon!). artwork gone missing. last minute schedule changes (i know... nff couldn't help it he couldn't come down at the last minute, and rich probably was a bit swamped too with other stuff too, but i really wanted to see their stuff!).

so, um, in summary, notacon went well, and i definitely want to go again next year. yay!

If you want to sell panties (and possibly boxers) you might just need the right models.

You volunteering? ;)

I guess I should make some kind of 'defense' for myself. I had around 55 books from 5 different publishing companies on all types of topics (SELinux, Open-Source, PHP, MySQL, C Programming, XML, on and on). T-shirts/DVD from PacketSniffers, shell accounts, hats, t-shirts (rubi-con, apress, jinx hackwear, etc.)

Problem is... I gave away a lot of the good stuff at speakers talks, my talk :P, the gameshow I ran, and the first round of the talent show. Unfortunatly, a lot less people showed up for all of those things, but hey, who am I to punish them by not giving out the prizes I intended ;)

I tried to keep this diverse, and therefore, had MS and beginner stuff. I can't help but assume that the reason all of my prizes were taken after the closing ceremonies was that people wanted them but didn't want to get made fun of :P

I would reccomended people attend everything they can because there were almost as many prizes as attendees, it's just a matter of when I decide to give them out.

I will try next year to have a small percentage of MS/beginner books but getting $2000 worth of stuff for free... you take what you can sometimes. So, it was either take prizes they wanted to give out or get a lot less :)

i don't blame you or anyone else... i was just kind of bummed that it seemed all the good stuff was gone before i had a chance to get any of it, since i was working a couple shifts during the first talent show and game show friday night, and by the time the second talent show rolled around, it was mostly stuff that i have little interest in or use for, and the scavenger hunt prizes didn't seem much better, though we did get a packetsniffers shirt and cd. maybe next year i should make sure to not do shifts in the evening when the fun and games are going on. (:

Well I understand what you mean by 'good stuff', but for sakes sake, 'good stuff' is certainly a personal thing. From what Froggy had projected, I figured we would need a lot more then stuff just for the majority of our 'hacker con' type people. Since that didn't happen, all we really had were that type :)

I have decided not to give out prizes through speakers as they seemed more confused by it, then wanting to hand them out, which is completely fine. More so, I didn't even know we were going to have more then 1 round of the talent show, so I was a bit labored for stuff to hand out =/

I definitly don't feel there is any blame on me for this stuff, if I were the recipient of prizes rather than the giver, I wouldn't want any of the stuff you didn't either. It's just a lot harder to plan for diverse types of people then the people I know (you and me types :P).

I guess next year I will just be more specific to the sponsors. It wasn't a lack of prizes, it was just a lack of prizes for the people that wanted certain stuff only.

i wonder if we could find out from people who prereg what kind of prizes they like best... i love geeky tshirts, stickers, and artsy fartsy stuff, and like books on web design. i know there's some people who can use free microsoft texts, but i'm curious what proportion of the notacon goers like what sorts of stuff. *ponders a poll or some sort, then remembers she'd have to get a paid lj account to use their polling set-up*

oh, and i take partial blame for the second talent show, since i asked froggy if there might be enough interest in it and i really wanted to take part. d:

Yeah it would make my life a lot better if I had some reference point for things. I already had the feeling during the con when people saw some books that it wasn't going to fly (except for a small percentile).

I may just error on the side of caution and stick with the more intense books and spare everyone from 'How you use an ethernet cable' (fake, but close to some :P). "Canning Spam" was certainly... useless.

As for web design stuff -- man I wish you had gone to my speech, the security and the web developer speechs and the hacker game show. There were some AMAZING books on XML, MySQL, PHP, CSS (about 12 in total... also some flash books from Friends of Ed).

As we NOTACON core have our own change log, I am certainly creating my own personal change log for all of this. So all of your comments (and those given during the con) were very helpful. I will probably error on the side of caution next year and over-do the good geeky stuff, and maybe get a handful of 'welcome, this is a computer'. :)

damn... i was on shift during the security and web developer speech and the hacker game show. your talk... ok, i have no excuse for missing that one except that hanging out w/ froggy and tyger and chatting was really fun. i need to figure out how to clone myself, and then sneak my clone into the con for free (because if i could afford to clone myself, i'd probably be broke afterwards). ah well.

oh, another suggestion that tod had: maybe have some fairly universally cool prize (like a gift cert to something like amazon or thinkgeek or the notacon registration and shwag table) that is publicized a few months in advance for some of the competitions, like anything but ethernet, the talent show, the hacker game show, and the scavenger hunt. that way, people who think the prize is really cool and worthwhile have added incentive to participate. also, it could be a way for a sponsor to get it's name out... i.e. anything but ethernet, sponsored by The Geek Empire, or something like that.*

* the geek empire may possibly be willing to sponsor one of the prizes... talk to us later

hey, i can't help it david thought of an amusing and creative way to find krnl's stolen car *evil grin*

For the record, we thought of that as well - but no car to get to a good toy store, not knowing where a good toy store was, and the hunt list listing a real car (not a toy) had us think otherwise.

The bar tab was an easy one - though Thursday night was better...

david put a lot of time into calling around to various toy stores (found via google local), and was willing and able to drive to mentor, but it meant he missed a fair chunk of the con saturday afternoon. we didn't know if we'd have a chance at the points with a toy car, but i was positive krnlpanik would be exceptionally amused at the very least. his reaction alone made it worthwile. (:
