New Orleans, Yadda Yadda
In the wake of the ass-pounding New Orleans is getting, and the wealth of prayers being winged down to the vicinity of Bourbon Street, all I can think of is what an amazing world we live in. Sure, there's the outside chance the city'll get wiped out (though not likely now that Katrina's been downgraded), but there's been this flurry of preparation. People have moved out of the path of the hurricane (including the illustrious [info]docbrite), and the rest of the sane people seem to be cooped up in the big hotel or the Superdome.

But you know, if this had happened in the 1920s? Nobody would have had a clue that this was on the way - there would have been no satellite tracking, no way of predicting which way the big wind would have shifted, and precious few ways of getting the word out ahead of the storm even if they had known. If Katrina turns out even half as bad as people say, it would have erupted out of nowhere to lay the smackdown with no warning whatsoever. A lot of people probably would have died.

Instead, we've got people cooped up as safe as they can be, worried and fretting but most likely okay. The city will take a lot of damage, of course, but God willing most of its inhabitants will probably be okay.

As a Christian, I'd like to note that they had prayer and half-assed Christ-based "science" in the 1920s, just as they had for years, and it wouldn't have saved them. You can thank the real science, including the scientific method and the uncomfortable evidence-only thinking that seems to rankle so many religious folks, for performing this particular miracle.

We live in a wonderful time, folks. Take a moment to appreciate the things we can do, because it sure as hell would have seemed like a science fiction to people living even a century ago.

(EDIT: However, let's say a prayer that the Superdome survives this little wingding, as part of the roof has just opened up. Eep!)

Thing is the Dykes in new orleans are designed for 20ft surge. the hurricane is producing 23-25, so if those dykes and dams bust the city will be a lake.

Also remember that the second largest oil refinery in the U.S. is in the general area. God forbid that it gets damaged in a major way.

I'm sorry ... being a lesbian, my first thought when I read that first sentence was, "Wow, those are some amazing women". *laughs at herself*

But then I reread it.

It definitely sounds like New Orleans is in a lot of danger. :-(

For an example of what this kind of storm can do with no warning, check out the Florida Keys storm from 1936.

i think that is sometimes the major problem, we do live in incredibly good times when technology can save our ass and instead of being grateful some just take it for granted and find really petty stuff to gripe about.....some hardship is good for he soul!

I'm about as non-religious as they come, but I have to appreciate the religious irony of the estimated 5000 people who have chosen to ride out the storm in the French Quarter, and the nearby Harrah's Casino, while the wrath of Katrina, and a possibly devastating flood from the river only _2 blocks_ away, may be headed their way. In an interview with Fox's Shepard Smith, one gambler was asked "Why didn't you get to higher ground?" On live TV, he replied "None of your f**king business!" Science or no science, PEOPLE may never change...

"This is correspondent Moses, coming to you live from the hillsides around Sodom. The Biblical Weather Service has forecast a 95% chance of flaming wrath today, and has issued a mandatory evacuation order for any males whose wives may have been turned to salt. We'll continue to broadcast as long as we can, but would like to remind you partying froods in the city that emergency services may not be able to reach you..."

Oh, it urks me when you talk like that - but then you know that already, don't you? LOL

There's a parable:

There's two girls on their way to school. They are most definately going to be late. The one girl looks at the other and says, "I'm going to stop here and pray that we're not late for school". The other girls responds, "You do that. But I'm going to run towards school and pray while I'm running".

Why can't it be both ways?

It doesn't make me uncomfortable. It annoys me that evidence-only thinking people don't ever want to think outside the box. Because you know, if no one ever thought beyond what they could see in front of them, all these nifty discoveries you spoke of here would have never been made.

It is in searching out the unknown; in the quest for the impossible, that things become the known possible. The proof and evidence we speak of so commonplace was at one time unthinkable.

50 years from now, what we have now will be referred to as "prayer and half-assed Christ-based "science" " when compared to knew revelations and discoveries made.

Now THAT is an amusing thought.

Flame away. I've got meetings....

You're right, there was no reason one faith had to be brought up and held up like that...I'm praying for everyone there, myself.

And you know what? There were times science failed me big time, and times prayer is what saved my ass.

Does it really matter as long as NO gets through this with as little damage and as few casualties as possible?

I have no problems with both. Obviously, I do that as someone who respects both science and Christ.

But there are a lot of people who don't, forgetting all the benefits that science has brought them even as they work overtime to undermine it. And they're idiots.

You're also completely wrong about the "thinking outside the box." The idea of looking outside what our known thinking doesn't automatically equate to "God" - in fact, God fuzzes that a lot of the time, since if you don't understand it you go, "Well, God did that. Good for him." A lot of the time, it's the scientists who said, "Why is that?" and investigated the deeper mysteries with an eye towards something other than feeling good about themselves who made the real discoveries.

I like God. I rely on him a lot. But faith and science? Two different things. And that's not a bad thing.

I prefer to pray while I run.
"God can help you move a mountain, but bring a shovel."
"Without Him I can't, without me He won't."
I have others in my arsenal if you are interested in hearing them. :)

LOL, so Brite chickened out in the end then? Last I was reading was linked from a forum and she seemed fairly ignorantly determined not to move. And you've have to be really ignorant not to move out the way of a storm like that. I just woke up and I'm annoyed because there's no news on telly, I want to see what happened. That's why I'm on the internet.

Last night, the New Orleans news, broadcasting from Alabama (I believe) was streaming live to the internet. But I'm not able to access that today. However, there's lots of info on the <a href="http://www.wwltv.com/>WWL TV station</a>. The storm was downgraded, but it's still looking pretty bad.

But guess what, Ferrett? When all of this is over, the religious leaders will be calling everyone to thank God that everything is okay. No mention of the well-trained scientists and disaster experts who worked so tirelessly.

Well, almost all the religious leaders. There were bets being taken last night on Snopes as to whether Fallwell or Robertson was gonna be first in calling New Orleans 'Sodom, but with water instead of brimstone'. My money is on Fallwell, and Robertson's foot is already so far down his throat that it's amazing he can breathe, much less talk.

Ha! Reminds me of last year when my English teacher declared that the reason Florida was getting hammered so much by the hurricanes was because it was A) where Jeb Bush was governor and b) the state that got Bush the 2000 election.

How much more advanced is prayer technology?

"Downgraded?" A hunnet forty-five mile an hour winds are really not that much less damaging than a hunnet fitty mile an hour winds. Y'know.

Actually, according to the newscasters last night, it is. What he was saying last night is that the degree of damage isn't linear, but exponential. So that lessening of the winds, which were a sustained 160-175mph last night, has probably made a difference. Of course, that difference might not be enough.

A breath of fresh air with all the wailing I've been reading about the hurricane. (pardon the pun)

I thought they were all going to be okay and they were. You're right. Science is a wonderful thing. Don't get me wrong. I really wouldn't want to be one of the thousands in the SuperDome waiting and wondering if my house was going to be okay. But I'd rather be one of them than one of the tsunami victims who had no warning and suffered terribly. Why didn't you mention the tsunami?

what craziness. It hit Miami where my fiance is working at for the vma's at that time it was just a tiny wee lass at about a level one. Pretty dinky to us florida folks who were hit with the 3 storms last year.

During the time it hit miami everyone in the doubletree just decided to party and drink. I wasn't even really that worried about my fiance Nick, because I knew he wasn't stupid enough to go outside.

so it swelled ion the warm bathtub water of the gulf and came after our friends in New Orleans. Funny that if nick hadn't excepted the gig to do the VMA's he would have been working on a shoot in N.O. All of our friends were able to get out of dodge but I feel bad for those people in the superdome and in the hotels.

This reminds me of that joke that went around the Net a few years ago...

A man is standing on the roof of his home, surrounded by flood water. A boat stops to pick him up, and he refuses saying he's going to rely on God to save him. Another boat goes by, same answer. A helicopter flies by and drops down a ladder, but the man refuses. He drowns

When he gets to Heaven he asks God, "I had faith in You, why didn't You save me?"

God replies, "I sent you 2 boats and a helicopter."

There are people who think that science and technology are the antithesis of religion, but I think they go hand-in-hand. Perhaps we should think that God gave us the ability to make all these discoveries and innovations to improve our lives; we'd be fools to pass all of this up.
