Go, Roger Ebert!
From one of today's reviews:

[Deuce Bigalow, European Gigolo] created a spot of controversy last February. According to a story by Larry Carroll of MTV News, Rob Schneider took offense when Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times listed this year's Best Picture Nominees and wrote that they were "ignored, unloved and turned down flat by most of the same studios that ... bankroll hundreds of sequels, including a follow-up to 'Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,' a film that was sadly overlooked at Oscar time because apparently nobody had the foresight to invent a category for Best Running Penis Joke Delivered by a Third-Rate Comic."

Schneider retaliated by attacking Goldstein in full-page ads in Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. In an open letter to Goldstein, Schneider wrote: 'Well, Mr. Goldstein, I decided to do some research to find out what awards you have won. I went online and found that you have won nothing. Absolutely nothing. No journalistic awards of any kind ... Maybe you didn't win a Pulitzer Prize because they haven't invented a category for Best Third-Rate, Unfunny Pompous Reporter Who's Never Been Acknowledged by His Peers."

Reading this, I was about to observe that Schneider can dish it out but he can't take it. Then I found he's not so good at dishing it out, either. I went online and found that Patrick Goldstein has won a National Headliner Award, a Los Angeles Press Club Award, a RockCritics.com award, and the Publicists' Guild award for lifetime achievement.

But Schneider is correct, and Patrick Goldstein has not yet won a Pulitzer Prize. Therefore, Goldstein is not qualified to complain that Columbia financed "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" while passing on the opportunity to participate in "Million Dollar Baby," "Ray," "The Aviator," "Sideways" and "Finding Neverland." As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks.

I like Ebert a heck of a lot. He's the biggest advocate for Miyazaki in the US, and that's not a small thing.

Ha, that's great.

That being said, I hope I disagree with Ebert. Deuce Bigalow is one of my guilty pleasures - I really loved that movie - and I hope the sequel doesn't suck.

Not that "Deuce Bigalo" was a good movie, but it's not like "Sideways", "Ray", or "The Aviator" were any better. I mean, I'd rather watch a movie that *knows* it's a piece of unentertaining shit and just runs with it, instead of a movie that *thinks* it's a gripping, deeply engrossing cinematic opus, but is, in fact, a piece of unentertaining shit.

(Haven't seen "Finding Neverland" or "Million Dollar Baby", so I can't really say, but given the company of movies they were placed in for this article, I can only assume they suck total ass, too. So yeah, point to Roger Ebert for knowing that "Deuce Bigalo" sucks, I guess, but he still gets a "zero" in the "Taste in Movies" category.)

I rarely agree with Ebert's opinion of movies (although in the case of Bruce Bigelow I suspect I would) but I read him regularly for just this reason- he's so funny it hurts sometimes.

I miss way back before he was really famous, though, when he used to go to the same crappy theater (The Davis, now sadly gentrified) I did, and would sometimes include asides about interruptions, the reactions of other moviegoers, or technical problems during the screening. I actually agreed with more of his reviews back then, too- he seemed more everyman and less critic in his younger days.

I think the his movies aren't worth watching and the only thing he'll ever have going for him in my mind is being the guy with the random Adam Sandler movie cameos screaming "You can do it!"

I'm not giving him head, though. No sir.
