Todd Rundgren's ARENA Live !
Some random notes on a night to end all nights …..

I always go to a new Todd / Utopia show with a sense of awe and wonder!

From the earliest days when he toured with Hunt and Tony Sales, M. Frog and David Mason, wearing welders masks to look like space gods and playing the “Utopia” theme for the first time all the way through solo shows, the “old school” seven piece Utopia with Todd, Moogy Klingman, Ralph Shucket, Kevin Ellman, John Seigler, M. Frog, then John “Willie” Wilcox and Roger Powell to the “new” streamlined Utopia with Todd, Willie, Roger and a new kid Kasim Sulton. Todd’s and friends and their music has always been a bout change and heading in new directions. Sometimes experimenting with video, jazz fusion pieces 15 minutes long, guest spots by the Hello People at the Roxy ( go to YouTube to see them set up Todd’s BREAD from Hermit of Mink Hollow), or even his rock orchestra with back up singers ( michelle and company – the worlds most dangerous back up girls according to david letterman) Todd has always been an innovator and creator, someone born to truly synthesize!

Tonight’s performance was no letdown as Todd and company set out to please the Cleveland audience with a power packed set guaranteed to set your soul on “rock and roll” fire and make your heart skip a melodic beep to old and new pieces. I can’t believe how well he and Jesse Gress nailed the dual lead on “I saw the light”, I thought he and Elliot Easton of the cars did it as good as it gets, but he and Jesse surpassed all expectations. He reached back in time for the Nazz’s “Open My Eyes” as well as other “oldies” such as “love in action”, “black maria”, as well as Todd’s cover of “Lunatic Fringe”.

All of this was part of a rocking phase one.

Phase Two was Todd and band introducing us to his unreleased ARENA album with one hard rocking driving number after another. I and many others took this as a blessing to hear and feel this work in progress, much of my memories are a blur, with one song played after another, but may I digress with a snide chuckle to the chorus of “this is my rifle this is my gun, this is for shooting this is for fun” on his new piece GUN, anyone who has seen Full Metal Jacket or been in the marine corp would know how I feel. The tender sweet “Weakness” has all the earmarks of a Todd Rundgren classic, and “Mountaintop” succeeded best at what this album is striving to be. Again it was a treat and a blessing to hear all this new music as one large piece, a sneak preview of what is to come and a pleasant trip for one and all.

The band was tight there were no breakdowns and Todd, Jesse and Prarie Prince made it obvious that they had played together many times, the chemistry was “on the money”, newcomers Rachel Hayden and Matt Bolton filled out the sound well and should work there way into the performance when they get a few shows under their belt. Todd’s banter was short and to the point and kept the audience pumped and wanting more.

On another note was dealing with the corporate bullshit at the house of blues. Our seats were so far to the side that all you could see was a railing, Todd and Jesse, they have no business charging people for those seats, if there was a spot light operator we wouldn’t have seen anything. After parking about a half mile away and waiting in a long line I was hassled by snot nosed security kid because of the lens on my digital camera, Truly the Sony F717 is the “John Holmes” of digital cameras but it’s still just a digital camera, and they did not hassle anyone else. Their only solution was to go back to my car and then get back in line, no I couldn’t use the coat check or leave it in the managers office. I guess this is what you should expect with a “well endowed” camera at the House of Blues. To my rescue came Lani Hanson and the merchandise girls who held on to that bad boy for me, and returned it to me at the end of the night. These ladies were sweet, beautiful and kind as they took care of this old Utopian! They had great stuff on sale, Todd boxer shorts, great looking Todd ARENA T-Shirts, buttons and bumper stickers and Todd’s fountain of youth water from Hawaii for anyone who missed his 60th birthday bash TODDSTOCK !!! Make sure you stock up on goodies and tell ‘em arkanjul sent you! So now I get back in lineand searched and scanned again, I go to the bar to get a drink and the young lady ( perhaps 22 ) tells me (a 58 year old who looks like santa’s older brother) I can’t buy a drink without a paper bracelet, so guess what? You guessed it, back out to the entry way for a paper bracelet and then ???? back in line before I could re-enter and head for the bar and finally get a drink. House of Blues ?? Give me a break.

Would I put up with that to see Todd again?? Hell Yea!!

Am I anticipating ARENA ??? You Know it

International Feel
Composer: Todd Rundgren
Duration: 2:51

Here we are again, the start of the end,
but there's More
I only want to see if you'll give up on me
But there's always More
There is More, International Feel
And there's More, Interplanetary Deals
But there's More, Interstellar Appeal
Still there's More, Universal Ideal
Still there's More, International Feel
I swear something lies
in your ears and your eyes
'Cause there's More
You hear and you see yet you do not believe
That there's always More

Dear Phil!, I can't properly express how much your stunning tribute to the ladies of the 1970's that you accompanied by Todd Rundgren's "HELLO IT'S ME" means to me! I recently lost my beautiful mother who was from that era and so reminds me of all the beautiful ladies you pay tribute to! Mr. Rundgren's song was a favorite of my parents and was used to put me to sleep at night!...that you give "thanks" to your creator at the end of your tribute on YOUTUBE.COM brings me the hope of renewal this Easter as I serve in Iraq and so miss home and my beautiful mother!..Easter blessings to you and a sincere "Thank you"! ...Cpt. arkanjul films goes worldwide ....
I was surprised when Art Face Off alerted me that I should vote in the fourth heat of the current face off, loe, and behold there was my image of Diane Berry at "THE BRIDGE" in the finish of the digital category, only to be beat by an excellent piece by a person named Slabjeb!

I do a search on "arkanjul" and find out that web sites in Thailand, South America and Singapore are hosting my vids via YouTube, and downloads are flowing at Divx Stage 6.

I finally came up with a theme for "Aqua" the last of the four elements to be explored in my upcoming DVD. I will be concentrating on a special place, that has water ( can anyone guess?) and a special time when I did my best work, I will be using music from Yoko Kano from Macross+.

I couldn't be more at peace with my vision and my art.

WINTER FLIGHTS OF FANCY
Do you have cabin fever? Does winter’s chill have you bound to your arm chair or couch? Let me introduce you to some excellent ways to visit exotic locals, and find fun and adventure without ever having to deal with the hassles of winter travel! All you need is a DVD player, an Xbox or personal computer. Let me introduce you to ‘ol Peg Leg who will tells a great story….

“Arrrrrr! Matey let me tell you of the days of high seas, a cool breeze, and a king’s ransom in treasure!” Your ticket to adventure is in Sid Meirs’ PIRATES available for the PC and Xbox. “Tis’ a tale told before on older PCs, and many early personal computers.” This is a true classic that has finally been upgraded to take advantage of today’s technology in sound and graphics. Those who played the earlier versions will not be disappointed with the tried and true formula of the game play, it has been kept virtually intact with vast improvements made to the look and sound as well as some new game elements added to “take it up a notch”.

The opening cinemas tell the story of lost hope and betrayal as your family goes into financial ruin at the hand of a ruthless and unforgiving Spanish nobleman. “Tis’ a shame I say!” You alone escape only to return as a young man who takes over the ship he is sailing on and start his career as pirate captain. You must save your family, get revenge, and get filthy rich along the way! Basically, the game is a series of mini-games that reflect the various skills you will need to hone to be master of the high seas. The main skills are sailing and sword fighting. In the sailing module you will need to manage your men and supplies as well as make good decisions on where to go and what to accomplish, you will be given many clues and options and can do them in almost any order. The game is completely open ended and non linear. You may play as a ruthless heel or as a brilliant trader, an explorer or treasure hunter! The choice is up to you! You can spend time fighting ship to ship or hire a large crew and actually siege and storm cities and towns. And what Pirate game would be worth it’s salt without a great sword-fighting element? You can hire crews in seedy taverns, fight for the honor of a comely barmaid, upgrade your ships with new sails and special cannon, even meet and fall in love with the governor’s daughter and impress her an expensive gift or a well executed dance! The whole affair is a fine mix of strategy and action with more than a bit of added humor. The game can be set to different levels of hardness and you can play in completely different time settings so repeated visits will always yield something new!

The game interface is simplicity itself, you may use your mouse or numeric keyboard for all functions, each mini-section is divided into small menus with easy choices, you will not need to spend a long time with a lengthy manual, you can dive right in, but you would short change yourself if you pass on the wealth of information held in the 144 page booklet that is filled with historic information on the life and times of the pirate era. The book gives you insights into the various time periods presented in the game, information on each of the ships, and details on all the options that can be applied to your favorite flag ship. The graphics are excellent and sometimes cross the line and look like a modern Disney animated movie. The sound is well done with great music and sound effects that can be enhanced by a free download from the games’ web site. The software is rated “E” for “Everyone” and makes for fine family entertainment. The educational element is on par with other historic simulations like “Oregon Trail” or any of the “Carmen San Diego” series of games.

“Now Matey, to get you in the proper mood for such high seas adventures I recommend these wonderful DVDs!”

I guess the most popular pirate movie today would be Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBEAN with Johnny Depp stealing the show with his outlandish portrayal of an eccentric but likeable rogue. Depp patterned his portrayal on the Rolling Stone’s Keith Richard and gives this swashbuckler a definite twist. The movie sports a lot of action as well as great special effects and was a giant hit at the box office.

Another newer release that takes you on a high seas adventure is the Russell Crow vehicle MASTER AND COMMANDER , directed by Peter Weir. This is a seafaring adventure that is authentic and thrilling enough to give any classic swashbuckler a run for its money. It is an adaptation of two books by Patrick O’Brian about British naval hero Capt. Jack Aubrey. Russell Crowe shines as one of the great naval captains of all time who not only excels at heroism but also in his humanity. Those of you fortunate enough to have a 5.1 surround system will thrill to the sounds of bullets racing past your ears and the thunder of cannons. A fine cast rounds out his shipmates and crew. All aspects of this title are first class!

Kids and adults continue to love THE GOONIES, as a group of children search for a pirates’ treasure and a chance to save their homes. This one has all the trappings, a mysterious map where “X” does mark the spot, skeletons, puzzles, cryptic clues and amazing traps, the evil Fratelli’s will have you in stitches as the comical villains, and a young Corey Feldman and Sean Astin heading a great cast of kids.

Although I would have to say number one on the list should be The Errol Flynn Signature Collection (Captain Blood / The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex / The Sea Hawk / They Died with Their Boots On / Dodge City / The Adventures of Errol Flynn) released by Warner Brothers. At a list price of around $45 this 6 DVD set includes two of the greatest pirate movies ever THE SEA HAWK and CAPTAIN BLOOD with three other great features, two westerns and an historic melodrama, as well as a documentary shot by Errol Flynn as he sails the Pacific on his own yacht. CAPTAIN BLOOD features Flynn as an innocent, Irish born doctor, accused of treason and sentenced to slavery in Jamaica, there he escapes and with his rag tag followers become buccaneers. Olivia De Haviland co-stars and Michael Curtiz directs. THE SEA HAWK tells the tale of English privateers and their effect on the great Spanish Armada. Claude Rains is excellent, as always, as the villain. Both films feature a great symphonic, trumpet-filled score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Missing from the set is THE MASTER OF BALANTREE, an MGM release which is available for about $15 and features Flynn as a Scottish rebel pursued by Britain who must make a name for himself on the Barbary Coast before he can return home and reclaim his birthright and his bride.

I have to mention the greatest Errol Flynn movie of all time, although not a pirate movie, but a fantastic adventure, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD that is available as a splendid, two disk collectors set, with loads of extras.

All of these titles can be considered family entertainment and will get you to forget those old winter blues, and keep your mind occupied with thoughts of tropical breezes and hidden treasure and a fine evenings entertainment for one and all.

are you dreaming of electric sheep ???
The movie Blade Runner was based on the sci-fi story "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" Neither the movie or the book answered the question, but a community of fractal artists do. They are the "shepherds" and their fractal animations are their "sheep" they all load into a special screensaver that downloads new sheep from the community whenever your computer is idle. And I must say, they are beautiful.

go here for downloads and more info ...

http://www.electricsheep.org/

this is straight from their web sight ...

Electric Sheep is a free, open source screen saver run by thousands of people all over the world. It can be installed on any ordinary PC or Mac. When these computers "sleep", the screen saver comes on and the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as "sheep". The result is a collective "android dream", an homage to Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
Anyone watching one of these computers may vote for their favorite animations using the keyboard. The more popular sheep live longer and reproduce according to a genetic algorithm with mutation and cross-over. Hence the flock evolves to please its global audience. You can also design your own sheep and submit them to the gene pool.

Lake View Cemetary on YouTube
Lake View is the most beautiful cemetary I have ever seen. It is possibly the most beautiful places I've ever experienced. It is a garden blessed by God and adorned by man in works of marble and stone, Greek and Roman temples, obelisks, statues of bronze, marble and gold.

It is a reflection of all that made Cleveland great, it tells the stories of those who lived here, their hopes and dreams, the financial movers and shakers of the last century, an American president, singers, artists, lovers, family and friends.

Here it is photographed and made into a video poem, each season a stanza in a year of the "life" which springs eternal within this wonderful place. The music is by Ryuichi Sakamoto "The Heart Sutra" from the film Little Buddha.

This work is dedicated to my dear teacher, mentor and friend, Raymond Goodfellow who passed away recently. We often talked of when he would visit, and how much he would love this place. he never made it. He will be there with me from now on.

When I was a kid I thought Lake View Cemetary was as close as you could get to heaven ... .... I still do

Well here it is, my birthday has come and gone, the big HEINZ 57!!! To commemorate this is a new look to the journal and new vids on Youtube. I re rendered ANGER, and posted FUTURE featuring music by Todd Rundgren and fractals from a new program called apophysis, as well as futuristic images from the game SPACE RANGERS 2: RISE OF THE DOMINATORS.

I had a great thanksgiving with mama and the kids and have been spending much time with uncle tony as he recovers from his surgery.

I almost completed my vid for Lake View Cemetary and will post it soon. I dedicated it to my art teacher Raymond Goodfellow who passed into the great beyond last week, thank God he is no longer suffering and is at rest. His guidance in art and life will be missed by many.

ART FACE OFF
Dear Friends,

I have entered a contest on a web site called ART FACE OFF it is a new site and still rather buggy and glitchy, the down side is that no one will see my work until I get some high ratings, and I can not get any ratings until someone sees my work, a real Catch 22! So, I am asking you to go to this site...

http://www.artfaceoff.com/index.php

search for me under "artist" as Phil D'Angelo or arkanjul and rate my works! I usually enter stuff and let the chips fall where they may but until I get some exposure, I cna't get any reatings and no chance for the contest.

A visit to shrine ...... a holy place
When I found my model from back in the 70s, Sally Andrews, I also found her mom Lilian, or "Lil" to all who know and love her. This lady is as close to a living saint as anyone I have ever known, she is kind and compassionite to all living things, tends her yard like it is God's garden, and has even put up with harrasement by the local police and neighbors for feeding stray cats, dogs and birds. She never has a bad thing to say about people and is extremly kind to all she meets. When she asked me to go with her to a shrine, I didn't think twice. We travelled to Windsor, Ohio and there on a large farm is the tallest statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the world! The walkway to the statue is lit with white globes that circle a lake, if you can see it from the air you would recognise it as a rosary! I am calm, I am blessed, I am in awe .... I am sooooooooooo glad that the film I made of the feast was in Her honor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKQ0gl5T2uA

and I used this song...

Mary's Prayer - Danny Wilson

Everything is wonderful
Being here is heavenly
Every single day, she says
Everything is free

I used to be so careless
As if I couldn't care less
Did I have to make mistakes?
When I was Mary's prayer

Suddenly the heavens rolled
Suddenly the rain came down
Suddenly was washed away
The Mary that I knew

So when you find somebody who gives
Think of me and celebrate
I made such a big mistake
When I was Mary's Prayer

CHORUS:
So if I say save me save me
Be the light in my eyes
And if I say ten Hail Mary's
Leave a light on heaven for me

Blessed is the one who shares
The power and your beauty, Mary
Blessed is the millionaire
Who shares your wedding day

So when you find somebody to give
Think of me and celebrate
I made such a big mistake
When I was Mary's Prayer

CHORUS

CHORUS

If you want the fruit to fall
You have to give the tree a shake
But if you shake the tree too hard,
The bough is gonna break

And if I can't reach the top of the tree
Mary you can hold me up there
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer

CHORUS

CHORUS

Save me, save me
Be the light in my eyes
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
What I wouldn't give to be (save me)
When I was Mary's prayer
