DENIED!
I just wrote several hundred words on the life of Max Ernst, his totemic figure Loplop the Bird Superior, and why I don't think I'll ever write vampire fiction, despite suddely having the best idea for a vampire story, ever. And asking why and if people still read vampires.

Now we'll never know the terrible truth.

Someone make it so I can post on the Board.

I read The Hunger (again) recently and it was pretty good.

I have a vampire novel in mind, but I really don't know if it's worth the effort to slot myself into that over-flogged genre. (Plus I'd have to excel in three or four difficult styles to actually bring it off.)

The Hunger? Crikey.

What was the one he wrote about angry werewolf dogs?

Wolfen. Also made into a movie of the same name starring Gregory Hines.

And no. I doubt I'll ever read vampire fiction again, let alone write it. Done and done and done.

You might well like Dead Europe, which is sort of a vampire novel, but more about religion and nationalism and terrorism. Interesting stuff.

haven't read vampire fiction in along time

Still am collecting the latest white wolf roleplaying games as they are just beautifully created books.. don't know the storyline doesn't grab me as much as the first edition ones...anyway off topic

in terms of fiction it is alittle stunted for ideas.

How come all vampires make with the shiny black spandex pants, have tattoo's and hang out in clubs playing industrial tunes...that always got to me...I am 800 years old but the beats of Bauhaus drives me craaazah!

oh the anguish of eternal existence. Let me prance around like a nonce..

Near Dark is a good cinematic counterexample to the poncy vampire, but I'm not sure I've read too many novels that do it recently. Actually, I haven't read too many recent vampire novels at all, but to harp on about Dead Europe some more, there's no spandex to be seen therein.

I like a good pragmatic vampire, of which Miriam from The Hunger is perhaps the ultimate example. Sita from Christopher Pike's (YA) The Last Vampire is also a good one. As a movie, Innocent Blood has its problems, but I really like Marie, the vampire in question.

Hmmm interesting. was being alittle flippant in my reply before..

I am sure there is definately some good stuff out there. Was a big fan of the much panned John Carpenters Vampires but I am a sucker for James Woods...

Near Dark is a really great movie. Haven't seen Innocent Blood, will check it out. I am "sucker" for Vampire flicks no matter how bad..I actually made it through Underworld (the blatant White Wolf rip off) and the last Blade flick...

thanks for the heads up ;()

Innocent Blood also happens to be a mafia comedy, so it's an odd movie all round. But as I said, it's got good stuff in it. We have a whole thread about vampire films here.

Back to books, which I'm sure is what Christian is more interested in, nothing else is coming to mind bar the obvious (I like Anne Rice's vampire chronicles, or the first three at least). Dan Simmons has a different take in Children of the Night and Carrion Comfort (both oldish now). I've read some Sonja Blue and Anita Blake, which weren't that bad, although obviously surrendering to the tropes, rather than in control of them.

can't really add much to that list...

I like the classic stuff: Dracula, I Am Legend.

The first Sonja Blue's where good and agreed on Anne Rice I also like the first 3. The P Z Brite edited "Love In Vein" had some fantastic shorts in it as well.

I just think the mythos has kind of been hijacked by neo-goth (the increasing lifestyle fashion statement not the architectural or historical period) cliche's and therefore doesn't really appeal to me all that much anymore in terms of horror fiction. I have heard "The Lost" by Aycliffe is quite good and have been meaning to check it out.

Did I hallucinate a children's TV show called Young Vampire or Littlest Vampire?

And I thought Last Vampire was about a vampire who survived nuclear war?

There is a movie called "The Little Vampire" a kids movie with Jonathan Lipniki (sp?)

Yeah, The Little Vampire was a (sort-of) Canadian TV show that I really liked (way back in the late 80s, I suspect). It was very charming, I seem to recall. It was based on a book that was also turned into a movie in 2000, which looks pretty dire.

Of course, if we start talking about TV, that opens up all sorts of oddities.

There's a couple of things called The Last Vampire. One is actually the long-delayed sequel to The Hunger -- I haven't read it, and suspect it's optional. Christopher Pike's version turned into a series of six or so books, which did go downhill, but the first couple I recommend.

I remember liking that show when I was a kid, especially the theme music. And sites out there?

Glad I didn't hallucinate it entirely.

But, the one book I'm thinking of wasn't YA. Strange book that kept coming back to several major events as the main character lay radiation sick. Remembering things truer and truer each time. Was bit young to appreciate it when I read it but it stayed with me.

In the sequel to the Hunger, does David Bowie recover from his again in time to make Catherine Denuve and Tim Robbins mum do a walk-off?

This has some info: http://www.gruft-der-vampire.de/vampirgruft/englisch/index2_engl.htm

The pictures are somewhat cheesier than I remember. It was a European co-production, so was quite big over there, it seems.

I presume you're not talking about I am Legend, about the only person not turned into a vampire by radiation or whatnot? There is a novel called Vampire Winter by Lois Tilton which might be it, though I haven't even heard of it previously. There's a couple of things about vampires reacting to a potential apocalypse like Ultra Violet (the TV show) and a great little ep of Forever Knight. Hell, I wrote one way way back, and got a nice little note from Ellen Datlow saying it had been done :-) (My very first rejection slip!) Otherwise this isn't ringing any bells.

There's also Blood - The Last Vampire, but that's an anime which I haven't seen.

The description I've read of Strieber's the Last Vampire involves a gathering of vampires (in Thailand) versus the CIA. A jolly romp, no doubt.

DUDE! I know I am Legend! Please!

Goddamn I want to get Ultraviolet again. That was what genre television should be.

Nah, none of them. It was probably just a pissy little paperback anyway. Thanks boss. Your expertise is always appreciated

Was actually replying to Ashamel in regard to watching alot more vampire stuff than reading and responding to his list.

As I stated I haven't read that much "new" vampire fiction. Not sure if I saw that in the nature of your first posting either.

anyway.
