They've gone and made me defend a politician I don't like.
I say a lot of bad things about Sarah Palin. The following is an exchange that I had with two workers at the office on Thursday (in parts paraphrased):
"She's... I don't want to say the word." [encouragement from co-workers] "It's four letters.... It's bad."
"Does it rhyme with a play in baseball?"
[sheepish] "Yes".
...Then my co-worker made jokes about how she likes to "hunt" and so forth.
Anyway, every so often I feel that she's criticized for the wrong reasons. I posted a video to Facebook after I saw that Yolande had posted it, and with the share I made the following comment. In part I'm posting this for myself, as a reminder to raise the discussion at work - even though I likely will forget that I posted this:
I saw this linked on Facebook. Now, politicians have their messaging written for them. My colleagues are part of that process on a provincial level. It's not the politician's job to research the issues, anticipate questions and decide how to respond. They have a staff in their office, Policy departments and Communications branches (that's mine). Is it bad that Palin didn't memorize her lines? I think that it gave the appearance that she lacks credibility and in a sense she has exposed the process (who needs to know how the sausage is made?). She'll need to get better at memorizing the messaging, but how bad is it that she had had to read? I'm genuinely curious and it's a discussion that I want to have at work this week.
Also- I rather have a politician read from notes and give factual information than spew incorrect facts.

A real blog post - highs and lows of yesterday, and food writing
New posts at the food blog.
Yesterday had its highs and lows. Mostly highs.
High: Lunch with a colleague who has never been a co-worker but knows a lot of people I do. We've worked in some of the same places but not at the same time (unless you include the day I was a temp in my current ministry over two years ago, the first time I met her).
Low: My meeting with my financial advisor was a waste of time. He violated Rule #1 of effective meetings. Nothing was covered that we couldn't have covered on the phone. There were a few awkward silences, one which I ended with, "So is there anything else?" and my inner voice continued, "Or do you just want to look at me?" I did learn that I was correct about his age. He told me that today (well, yesterday but it was "today" yesterday) was his birthday. I asked how old, he answered "Too young." I replied, "I figured that out. How old? 24?" Bingo. Yeah, so my investments dropped a couple percent. A few more months and it'll be on the upswing. A few more years and it will be on a bigger upswing. At least, according to market trends.
Low: Because of that time wasting meeting, I got into the subway - after paying - and learned that it was shut down because of signal failure. I decided to walk to my evening destination, which meant that I couldn't go home first. It took an hour. I would have been home in 10-15 minutes by subway, with time to shower and change. I later learned that three unrelated incidents happened on the subway (a shooting or something?) I'll read about it later and updated. I was irritated that I had to walk and that I wasted subway fare, but then I got inebriated and had good food for $20 (free, kind of - Kerri bought my ticket). Which leads me to the next high...
High: The Gremolita Good Food Hall (will blog about it later). Had lots of food, lots and lots of wine. It was cool to see some people - industry people but also food enthusiasts like me - that I'd seen at the Brickworks Picnic.
The highlight was actually the vegetables. I couldn't stop munching on grape tomatoes bursting with flavour. I really liked the mixed drink that I had. Rum, lime cordial, grenadine and ginger ale? Must confirm today. My co-worker was there (different than the colleague I lunched with) dubbed it "The Obamanator". He's strangely obsessed with U.S. politics. I collected a few glasses- some wine and a beer (though I wasn't feeling the Czeck Pilsner). Left behind the rocks glass.
The event was held a few blocks from home at the U of T campus from 6pm-10pm. I was there from 6:30-9:15ish, home and in bed around 9:30pm. It will be food blogged.
Time to head to work. This might be updated later.
