| Indiana steamers? |
[Jul. 26th, 2008|06:45 pm] |
Hello! I am moving in a few weeks to central Indiana and was wondering if there were any steampunkers in the area. I keep seeing all these lovely invitations to steamy events I can't make it to as they are clear across the country. :(
Thanks! |

Hello steamy people, I'm a long-time lurker, occasional commenter, first time poster. My name is Athene, I'm 16, and although I've been interested in Steampunk for a while, I recently found myself rapidly becoming obsessed. My usual mode of dress is very colorful and odd; see this post at the LJ FRUiTS community if you care to see an example: http://community.livejournal.com/fruits/3650091.html#cutid1 I do not have funds with which to purchase steamy clothes to suit my obsession at this point, unfortunately, so for now I have made one or two attempts at the style with clothes I already own. I don't have a photo yet, but I'll be sure to post when I get one- I think I've done fairly well considering I just grabbed things out of my closet! Among them is the vest I used as a waistcoat in the first picture in that post I linked to above, in the FRUiTS community. Anyway, seeing as I have no pictures of myself to share, I will share something else. There's a website, www.polyvore.com , where you can overlap photos of clothes to assemble outfits. It's really pretty neat. When you're done, you publish them so others can see. It's mostly dominated by mainstream trends, but there is a small and thriving Steampunk community. Many of them post their sets in the Steampunk fashion group: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/group.show?id=6644 (scroll down to see thumbs of the sets; click to see it larger) If you sign up for an account there, be warned! It can eat hours and hours of your time. One good thing, though- if you come across an item you adore, polyvore links to the original site it's from, where you can purchase it, if you have the funds. And now, as an example, some of my recent Steampunk sets (I'm Luai-lashire there, as well): ( Read more... ) |

| From A 2005 Subaru STi To A 2005 Audi S4 |
[Jul. 26th, 2008|03:07 pm] |
I sold my car...and bought a 2005 Audi S4! It's very similar to my old car, same year, same color both inside and out (EVERYTHING Black), still all wheel drive, and has a 6 speed manual. The difference is the engine, it's a V8 engine! >: D Which puts out 340 bhp! 40 more than my old car, but because it's a luxury car and not a sports car the extra weight makes my older car still faster. But, it's nice to finally own a V8 engine, something I've wanted to have/experience ever since I got into cars. I've owned 2 V6's, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, and now a V8.
The crazy thing I thought was a 2006 Audi A4 with a 210 bhp 2.0 4-cylinder with 6k miles less than the one I bought was $1k MORE than the car I got.
http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/top-2005-Audi-S4.htm Here is a some pictures/info on the 2005 Audi S4, I bought a black one with all black interior w/ my own in-dash navigation unit.
Well any ways, wanted to know what everyone thought about the 2005 Audi S4; good or bad. Paw |

| Victorian Gent's Shirts. |
[Jul. 26th, 2008|01:46 pm] |
I was going through some things at work and found an photo I have taken of some of the recent period shirts I have done. I have yet to post these photos to my website but thought I would give you guys a link to see them, since now and again people on here are in need of such things. They go for around $60 USD in basic white cotton. For those going to DragonCon you can look for me wearing a new Steam Dandy Shirt, and gent's Steam Corset that I will be offering come August, at The Madhatter's Treasure Chest.

| New Dr. Roundbottom Site & Storyline |
[Jul. 26th, 2008|08:05 am] |
Hello steampunkers!
My photo/fiction project "Dr. Julius T. Roundbottom" has relaunched today over at clockpunk.com. The first storyline piece doesn't have much in the way of steam fashion, but you will want to read next week's post for sure. Some fun steampunk fiction and photography each week, along with the ocassional steampunk podcast. I hope you enjoy!
The website is a bit overly fancy in technology to achieve what I want, so if something breaks in your browser, please let me know. It requires Javascript, and Flash is pretty important too (but it is not a flash site).
I highly encourage you to comment "in-character" on the site. I look forward to generating a community of oddball characters (that I didn't write) around the site, and Dr. Roundbottom will respond in-character as well. The site's commenting system uses gravatars, so you can upload a small image of yourself in costume that will appear with your posts, kind of like a LJ icon. |

| Death to Blues! |
[Jul. 26th, 2008|09:22 am] |
Going through LJ friendslist stuff, it seems like there are tons of people who are oozing sap because they're in love with someone. Normally that would make me sad and lonely a little - but this time, well, i'm one of them :D And that is a wonderful development. I feel like this time it's real and substantial, i feel like i'm not deluding myself or making mountainous paper hearts out of molehills... and i hardly can wait to go to London and curl up with her. Optimism? Huh, this is a refreshing new thing... :D
And on the homefront, i've officially begun moving, as i carted a load of my stuff over to my new place of residence yesterday evening. So i estimate that within a week or two i'll probably move myself there. Another amazing thing, (in a similar vein to that love thing in the first part of this entry,) is that i'll be able to scritch and cuddle with horses every day. Holy crap. :o
...
On a boring and unrelated note, that AVG software works well for killing viruses, but damn is it annoying! Always popping up to try and connect to its update server, or to tell me it's upset... god, needy programs... grrrr. It's the X for you, mister. This is why i will never have kids - they're nothing but a bunch of needy (and messy!) programs. Well okay... it's not the main reason i don't want kids, but it sure is a compelling motive for sterilization in its own right. |

| | awake | ] | Well folks,
Its been a while since I posted here and been just reading and lurking with an occasional comment. So a while, back the wif and I had to buy for our dog Tru-D (Starfire Tried and True) a set of Doggles for her since she has a tear in her retina and makes it hard to be out in direct sunlight. She wears them when we go out for longer than half an hour and here are a few pictures from my mother's estate.
She's gotten used to wearing them and we plan for her to wear them at this year's MARScon since this year's theme is steampunk.

| | Audience No. 2- Autolux | ] | i worked my first full shift today at the coffee shop. i think i am already getting pretty good at using the register and sending drink orders but i have yet to actually make the drinks. i attended a coffee and tea tasting class yesterday for 6 hours in which i was starving the whole time... tasting tea and coffee for that long on an empty stomach is really unpleasant. the girl who gave the lecture reminded me of a long-lost Tsunehara sister. the situation is finally working out rather conveniently because i can simply show up at any time i prefer to train with the shift leads and get hours. all of the employees i've encountered thus-far are really helpful and good-natured. also, it seems that they have a bunch of new employees that were hired right before i came up who really suck. the manager thinks i'm competent and says it will be likely that i can take their hours and work full-time (which- in my financial situation- is such a relief)
Korey is gone right now. she went to her friend's dad's wedding in San Louis Obispo and won't be back till sunday. i've been partially staying at the Co-op and partially staying at Korey's. it's weird to have a penthouse apartment all to myself. it's lonely more than anything. Annie is also gone. she left with her friend Nathan to drive back home to Orange County tonight. we had a few notable adventures in the last couple days such as visiting the Berkeley botanical garden (which is huge and amazing) and swimming at the strawberry canyon pool. every time we go somewhere i have to fake my identity as being a Cal student. i even lied on my application to Peet's, saying i was a transfer student for the fall- art history- and that would ensure my continued stay with the location and company.
oh, also, i'm not coming home in the fall. i'm taking a semester off to stay up here and make money. i can probably take classes at Berkeley City College which will transfer back to CSULB but my main concern is taking care of my bills and saving some money if possible. I can't go back without Korey. when she graduates in december i'll return with her and continue working on my art education degree in Long Beach.
i finally feel like i'm not just waiting around for something to happen- or i'm finally taking control of my life. it's so strange and i've come so far through so much nonsense and depression that i can hardly believe it. at last at last at last.
time to get back to scrubbing dishes at Ridge. |

| Overwhelmed |
[Jul. 25th, 2008|10:18 pm] |
Until I few days ago, I never heard the term 'steampunk' except as a description for a few videogames and books. By chance I found some beautiful jewelry on Etsy tagged as steampunk. I was curious and this led me to the various communities on the internet.
I really like all of the different steampunk inspired clothing and outfits I have seen so far, but I hope to find a more casual style.
I'm not much of a DIY gal except for knitting and crochet...and I've never strayed too far from tshirts and jeans. I'm curious as to where some of you look to find clothing to put together for outfits...I'd like to try and step out of my comfort zone.
hildekitten's recent photos look like fun to wear...I'd love to come into work one day like that.
If this post is redundant, please smack me and point me in the right direction. :p |

| When singing about Airships was FIRST in FASHION |
[Jul. 25th, 2008|12:01 pm] |
In the 1900's when all this was new, the fashion in music was singing about Airships, and bi-planes:

This year in addition to our big show at this years Dragon*Con, Abney Park will be leading a Steampunk Sing-a-long featuring vintage airship and pirate music. Above are three fun ones (just filled with innuendos) that we'll likely be botching up.
I thought the Steamfashion Community might enjoy a taste of the ORIGINAL Victorian airship music.
Listen to old-timely recordings of them here: http://www.nasm.si.edu/wrightbrothers/music/music_content.html

| NYC Picnic Reminder |
[Jul. 25th, 2008|02:44 pm] |
Hello all! serindrana here with a reminder of the picnic on August 2nd in NYC! Like always, I provide the disclaimer that this event isn't meant to interfere with dear jaborwhalky's event - please, nobody change plans! I'd feel absolutely terrible.
Contained herein are just the basics of the event for the information of those attending:
Date: August 2nd Time: 2 PM - ? Location: We shall meet up on the steps of the Natural History Museum (Central Park West between 81st and 79th street) before walking to Central Park itself.
Currently, including myself and liu_xing, we have six or seven confirmed attendees, but we wouldn't mind having one or two last additions. There will be iced teas and cooled ciders along with finger sandwiches and sweets, all home-made. We encourage everybody attending to bring one or two treats as well, to make the event a sort of pot-luck!
Currently, the forecast for the day is cloudy, but with a low chance of rain. However, if the day arrives accompanied with rain, we will be meeting up at the same location before proceeding to Alice's Teacup. If it looks like rain, do bring enough money for food! |

S H O R T I M A G I N E D M O N O L O G U E S .
- - - - Mom, Dad, I'm Into Steampunk. BY Marco Kaye
- - - -
Remember when I was crawling around the attic, looking for my old Planters-peanut-man Halloween costume? I didn't donate it to the children's theater, like I told you. I salvaged the monocle, top hat, and cane, combined them with a swallowtail tuxedo, and stole away to a midnight screening of the underrated masterpiece The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Don't get me wrong; I still live in your world. In this very house even. But now I exist between two eras: an Edwardian past and a quixotic future where dirigibles can travel through space and time.
No, I won't take off my topcoat. And that's exactly my point. I understand your confusion. The nascent trend I have latched onto is difficult to define. Maybe I can explain it to you with the new mods I've been working on. No, Mom. Not like in Quadrophenia, although I appreciate those mods' fondness for tailor-made clothing. These mods.
This looks like a late-18th-century organette, correct? Look again. It hides the Dell laptop you got me when I went to college. This bronze hand crank turns it on, and I've hidden a miniature photo printer where the tune sheet is supposed to go. I even installed Linux. I've put a lot of time into this since I quit my job at Anthropologie, which is something else I wanted to tell you about. Don't get up and go to Lowe's yet. But when you're there can you get me a two-speed fan capacitor?
You'll appreciate this, Dad. Would I ever lose this cell phone? It's got a back plate of soldered brass. I created the aged patina with simple ammonia and salt. I'll replenish that soon, if you'll quit bugging me about it. Check this out. These interlocking gears are what I use to dial. They also explain why I haven't been replying to your texts recently.
Of course, I didn't need to mod Grandpa's railroad watch, but I did want to tell you that I'm borrowing it indefinitely.
If you want to label me retrofuturistic so I can fit into your compartmentalized worldview, that's fine. But look past my airplane goggles. This is my lifestyle. While many of my kind doubt there'll be a complete societal collapse in the future, a near-cataclysm is likely. In this scenario, I will be able to repair a generator, suture the wounded, and even train carrier pigeons. I'm learning valuable skills.
Don't be silly. I am not affiliated with the goths who hang out at the end of the boardwalk. Yes, rivetheads have made attempts to horn in on my culture. It's attractive to them. Since Evanescence went mainstream, they've been able to buy their clothes at Spencer's Gifts. But just because they read about our ways on Boing Boing doesn't mean they can rock a true neo-Victorian lifestyle. It takes a lot of time and a lot of welding.
How long? Why are you so locked down to the months and weeks of today? Anyway, I've known for a while that I belong to a hypertechnologized gaslight era. I've loved trains since I was 2. Remember my obsession with Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? And although I don't remember getting a good grade on that Nikola Tesla essay, I was really enthusiastic about the subject.
Don't shackle me to your outmoded ways of work. Trade and barter are more valuable to me than any coin. Besides, I'm plenty busy guest-hosting a blog called The Neon Corset. My band, Shades of Crimson, has taken off. We just booked a gig at the Rusty Rudder.
Is it too soon to invite you to a night of experimental performance and magic? My friends and I are hosting a postvaudevillian event at the VFW Hall. If you attend, I would appreciate if you called me by my new name, Alchemancer.
Don't look so crestfallen, Mom and Dad. At least I'm not into cyberpunk. |
