The Great Pie Caper
As I mentioned previously, [info]torasin and I bought a piemaker. Well, it cooks them, you still make the interiors and pastry and shizz.

So last weekend we fired 'er up. I dove in headfirst making Chicken and Leek pie from scratch (and mostly guestimations) while [info]torasin paddled safer waters with a can of apple pie filling (as I'm sure I'm mentioned, I'm a lazy shit and couldn't be arsed stewing apples)

Result: Success.

So far this week [info]torasin has confidently swum deeper and made a selection of spinach, ricotta and bacon pies, and currently cooling on the rack is a mammoth job lot of 12 Steak, Mushroom and Onion pies, plus a small selection of plain steak and onion for the Resident Shroom hater (Sorry sweetie, but me, Maple and Paggles all love our mushies. You're the odd one out :P)

The rats have been going gorillashit over the new cooking smells wafting through the house, and any entry to a room where the cage is currently residing is met by eager faces and grasping paws. In fact, Maple was so eager to sample my latest endeavours that when presented with a cooled, half-eaten steak & mushroom pie to take a bite from she fell out of the hammock arse-first (narrowly missing Paggles) and leapt forward to just about tear the damned thing out of my hands.

I forsee many many pies in our future....*mwahahaha*

It's good to be the king
Reason #432 why working from home kicks complete and utter arse:

9:00 AM - finish shift

9:15 AM - in bathtub with a good book, trading bites of bacon, chicken and tomato rolls with rats. (Although from their perspective with an arm hanging over the side of the tub it was more a magical mystical low-hanging snackie tree. See icon for idea)

It's good to be the king :D

Was watching Leonardo, a part-dramatisation, part documentary, part mythbusters style series on the designs and discoveries of Leonardo da Vinci.

And some twat actually asked "Was he a greater genius than Einstein or Newton?"

...THE FUCK

Einstein and Newton are geniuses in their fields, but da Vinci was a fucking coruscating brilliance. A polymath of the highest order. Anatomy, geology, physics, art, civil engineering - he mastered them all. And he did it in a time when there was no foreknowledge whatsoever to build on. He didn't stand on the discoveries of others, he observed, catalogued, extrapolated, tested, proved all this on the power of his own mind. FFS, the man identified Arterial Sclerosis, and extrapolated the cause being from "a nutrient too rich in the blood" being deposited and building up on the walls (what we now know as Cholesterol). He designed a working hang glider, an automaton capable of standing up from a seated position and resuming that position (Which may not sound like much, but ask any robot designer the mechanics involved), wrote an anatomy treatise that rivals Greys, designed and created a diving suit that operated on the principles of compressed air - and these aren't poncy suppositions, but actual items that have been created from his notes and tested in the 20th Century. And he did this using the materials and forging methods of his time - the 15th and 16th Centuries.

In fact, off the top of my head I can really only think of possibly Benjamin Franklin being comparable on the staggering level of his intellect, and even then it's with a bit of a see-saw hand motion.

It really shits me that his legacy in the common mind is the Mona Lisa and a fucking Dan Brown novel. (And trite T-shirts bearing Vitruvian Man ) The man was a shining example of sheer brilliance and dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. It's almost terrifying to contemplate what he could have accomplished in a more enlightened day and age.

.....................................eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Holy shit Quinto looks good. O.O

Saldana on the other hand looks like Epic Fail for Uhura. Nichelle Nichols was fucking insanely gorgeously exotic. Saldana looks like a typical R&B filmclip crumpet (Pan down and see the spangly short shorts!) And Chris Pine looks way too in love with himself, which I suppose fits Kirk to a T :D

Is it can be next year yet?

Random Australian History Fact
Freddo Frog was responsible for an important Australian scientific expedition.

Which one?

Freddo Frog was one of the successful confectionary lines manufactured by Mac Robertson. It was with money from his confectionary business that Mac Robertson funded Mawson’s part in the joint British, Australian and New Zealand expedition to the Antarctic in the late 1920's. The work done by the expedition led to the formation of the Australian Antarctic Territory in 1936.

Perception, perception....
[info]customers_suck vs [info]bad_service

Scenario:

Customer: Hi, I'd like to make a morning appointment if I can
Clerk: Ok, well the earliest we have is an afternoon -
Customer: Uh, sorry, afternoon's aren't good for me, I have to make a morning one. Doesn't have to be straight away.
Clerk: Oh, ok, how's next wednesday sound?
Customer: Great!

(Appointment is made, parties wend their ways)

[info]customers_suck

Customer: I'd like to make a morning appointment
Clerk: Ok,sir, well we're booked out this week for morning appointments, but I can give you one tomorrow afternoo-
Customer: (interrupting) No. I want a morning appointment.
Clerk: ok, we have one available next week at -
Customer:No, I want one tomorrow.
Clerk: I'm sorry, we're fully booked tomorro -
Customer: I don't care, I want a morning appointment. Book me a morning appointment. For. Tomorrow. Jesus, what are you, fucking incompetent? (possible insertion of racial epithet)
Clerk: I'm afraid we don't have any morning appointments available at all this week (Insert some pithy smart comment by clerk they probably thought up four hours after the fact)
Customer: I want to speak to your manager
(End with dragon customer being fended off/dragged out by security/threatening to sue while victorious clerk smiles smugly)

[info]bad_service

Customer tries vainly for several moments to get attention of clerk
Customer: Excuse me -
Clerk : Surly Grunt
Customer: Hi, how are you today?
Clerk : Surly Grunt
Customer: I'd like to make a morning appointment if possible
Clerk: There aren't any. The next appointment I can get you is at 4pm Tuesday. (Smacks gum, wields pen Can I have your name?
Customer: (interrupting politely) I'm afraid I need a morning appointment. It's ok if there's none available this week, there's no hurry
Clerk: We don't have any morning appointments this week. Only afternoon ones. (Dramatic roll of eyes)
Customer: That's ok if it's next week - when do you have the next morning one?
Clerk: (Dramatic sigh at having been dragged away from conversation with co-workers, annoyed flipping of pages) We've got one next week at 9am. Is that ok with you?
Customer: (Taken aback) Yes, that's fine, thank you.
(Clerk scribbles down name, throws reminder card at customer and wanders back to vapid gossip session with co-workers)

Conclusion:
Drama queens, the lot of 'em. Although sadly, most of the stories in [info]techsupport are true. Especially the ones that demand a rewriting of the laws of the universe, or the fundamental functions of technology :/

Not dead, despite the rumours. Disregard the vultures.

The heater packed in at work, so the boss has gone "fuckit" and told the estate agent to shove the house up their arse sideways. (Given it's a double story behemoth, I want tickets to that event.) On the plus side, it means I get to work from home, where it's warm, and cozy for my poor arthritic bones and I has many distractions on boring dead shifts (Last night I stitched up a rag rug, rebuilt two laptops and repaired rat-nibbles on pillowcases) and can putter in to wake [info]torasin up if he sleeps through his alarm. On the negative side, it is very conducive to being a lazy twat shut-in, so I'm pushing myself to go on meanderings and hit the gym like crazy, especially now I get more time to work out after work before having to scurry home for the dispensing of rat meds.

Apart from that, nothing terribly exciting. Been puttering about with this and that and arguing with various things and a bit of a creative blank slate. That's starting to clear though, with scribbles for a Donna!fic and a 9th mvid to address something I realised really shat me off about RTD's writing in s2. And insane ideas as to what to do with four hundred LEDs. More to come later.

Bought a pie maker last week. I forsee many quiches and nummy freezable pies being made until we get bored with it :D Or until this goddamn cold bites me in the arse one too many times and I sneeze a gob of snot into it. mmm. Snot pie. You want pai? I HAS PAIIIIIIIIIII

Drunken revelations
You know it's pretty sad when for all its screwed up continuity inconsistencies and tendency to waffle towards soapism that Smallville makes more fucking sense and is a better show than RTD's DW.

Looks like Maple has a genital myco flare up at the moment.

Well, we're working on that assumption. Given the fact her cagemate (and sister) has had it, and she's not presenting symptoms for any other cause of vaginal bleeding, we're going from there. Got her started on the Vibravet/Baytril antibiotics and will take her to the vet next pay (The first thing the vet will do is get her on the antibiotics to see if that clears it up first anyway, so we is not bad rat parents for not rushing over straight away :P ) And this is going to be fun because unlike Paggles, cleaning up around Maple's cooter requires two people due to her sheer frakkin' bulk. (One to hold, one to see what the fuck they're doing past all the rat)

But in better news, she is holding to her diet and de-fattening happily ^_^

Got [info]torasin his piemaker, and hopefully we shall have pies. Need to pick up some ingredients. He wants to eat healthier (Lit: "Stop eating so much shit for lunch") and I'm always for something that means I cook a shitload of food and freeze it for later :D

The house continues to fill with hallow e'en goodies. Tombstones that need to be plastered, plans, skulls, and enough electronics to probably get us ranked as terrorists or something. And there's a hard weekend's worth of garden work getting gradually washed away by the near-fucking-constant rain since Monday morning.

Life as usual in the Meeshouse...

Welp, the new fan for the laptop wouldn't power up. So it was the board, dammit. *grr*

Still, I was plotting ways around it (I am not fucking throwing out a $1000 laptop for three malfunctioning pins, dammit!) but there's lots of other errant behaviour that makes me think the mobo has gone queer. Le sigh. Farewell, thou stalwart and faithful Gibbers....

But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and ebay is selling the same model laptop with a broken screen but working base for $150!

mehehe mine now! All I'll have to do is jam my working screen on the bitch and slap my 40gb win98 HDD in there and we're all good :D Plus I'll have a plethora of spare parts!*

In other news, the rats have new playthings, [info]torasin has a pile of DVDs and a pie maker, and I has more Smallville to devour. And the kitchen is rapidly filling up with papier-mache tombstones, weeping angel parts, and for some reason a half-eaten pot of gravy. Pics to come eventually...

NOTE: * Please don't tell me to buy a new one. Gibbers happily fulfills my needs as a trot-about, and very cheaply too. I leave the hardcore processing to my desktops for a reason.

Working from home tonight. My left hip has completely fucking gone. In a very bad way it hasn't done since the repeat behaviour that led to me being fucking well diagnosed with MD back in the 90's.

Except now it hurts as well -_-

I am not happy.

SO IT'S MEME TIME!
