I don't update this very often... [11 Apr 2008|01:37pm]
[ mood | amused ]
[ music | Flight Of The Conchors - Robots ]

Last week was awesome. Misery Signals! Reuben! Both brilliant. In fact, It's the 2nd best Reuben gig I've been to (only beaten by ABC2 last year: They did a Nirvana cover, came out in styrofoam helmets and Jamie had came to the gig from the hospital, still in his gown!)

Brilliant stuff. Otherwise, life is good. But no need to go into detail. I'm here to try and get some more comments on my recent articles! Go on, please read?

The Antikythera Machina charge onwards! [09 Mar 2008|03:29pm]
Rune broke up. The Antikythera Machina were formed. Myself, Neil, and Mike have taken it upon ourselves to further Runes experimentation and take the music to the next level.

In that sense, we have a gig, so you can track our progress and comment accordingly :)

13th April, Be there!

See? This here poster proves it. Tickets are £5.

Also, this:

Hooray, you can buy it from us online! Well, get to it :P

Go on, all profit goes to a band in need of money. by "profit" we mean, a pound off the ticket price. The rest goes to Misery Signals as they are a better band.

Still, come.

Go on.

Carl.

It's a Wii! Wario! [31 Dec 2007|07:30pm]
[ mood | calm ]

Right, so megatron and minitron are out of kick. To be more specific, my old comp (minitron) decided to stop working on the 24th, and my new PC decided to just stop altogether on the 28th, still turns on, but as its loading windows, it just stalls, and you hear this clicking sound from the computer. Wierd. Also really fucking annoying.

So, I am using my newly bought Wiinternet! It's a little sucky, but you work with what you got till the guys at Mesh phone you back and tell you "oh yeah we forgot to make sure it works, merry christmas?". Arg.

Anyway, Just wanted to wish you all a Happy New Year :) Hopefully at some point, I'll actually be able to use my own PC again, and can update on my actually quite fun Christmas and New Year times (hopefully).

Also, I may be just annoying enough to send in my Movies of 2007 list, via this hunk of junk, to Den Of Geek, so it might be up on the 2nd... That is if my hangover isn't too back tommorow... :P

Anyway, have a good one!

See you later 2007!

I usually dont do these things... but in my defence, I'm bored of tidying. [23 Dec 2007|05:10pm]
1 - Go to wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article title that you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to Random quotations:
http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on "explore the last seven days"
http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use photo shop or similar to mix it all up. Post it.

Spider-Man 3: Not a complete mess. [26 Nov 2007|03:18am]
[ mood | satisfied ]

You heard me.

Here's how it goes down. There is a mess made of Spider-Man 3, this is true, but save for one section, the story is brilliant and it is done to at least the quality of the first Spider-Man. How does this make sense? Well, it's because I know what fucked it up, and I'm actually going to ignore it any time I see this movie again.

Brock/Venom.

Don't get me wrong, Venom is probably one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, it's just he is so badly dealt with that it brings the whole story down. Aside from his action scenes in the last battle of the movie, he is a completely pointless and useless character. They wasted everyones time with any lines Eric Foreman had to say, as he just wasn't convincing, and wholeheartedly, the worst character in the entire trilogy.

Sandman is terrific and really has a touching back story and a connection to Spider-Man that makes him the ideal choice for the main villain. Harry, of course, is still looking for vengeance, and tries his hardest to get it. I have no real problem with this storyline, as it ties up that storyline superbly, and needed to be dealt with. If only his glider wasn't so shit.

I gave this movie a second chance after initially feeling embarrassed for Sam Raimi for making it, after the utter, utter genius of Spider-Man 2. The reason for that is my love for Spidey. I wanted it not to suck so badly, and I needed it to redeem itself. And even if it isn't entirely redeemed, it goes a long way to doing so. 75% of this movie is sound, yet there is a section that drags on, directly after Bruce Campbell comes on screen where absolutely nothing important happens.

A waste of time.

Plus, I am one of those who subscribe to the theory that Tobey Maguire is kind of rubbish at playing aggression. Sure, he's got the emotion stuff down, but he just can't do "HULK MAD" kind of stuff, meaning black suit is a little bit of a letdown. Nitpicking aside, it's also not terrible!

Why does Pete Parker love MJ? Shes kind of annoying. Hey, I ain't saying that Gwen is much better, but she is a step up. Of course, my favorite pick has always been Black Cat, but that hasn't happened... at least not yet.

So there you have it. It ain't rubbish, it ain't spectacular but it isn't a total fuck up.

Life and media. [25 Sep 2007|02:38am]
[ mood | cheerful ]
[ music | Farscape - 313 Scratch n' Sniff ]

I don't update my LiveJournal very often. I don't have a lot to update it with. I will tell you this though.

I'm happy.

I have a job where I work 10 hours a week and get paid 300 quid a month. Not a lot of money, I know, but it usually does me well. I have an amazing girlfriend and great friends (who i should see more of). I play video games a lot and I read books, magazines and articles of music and movies online. I'm not sucessful in many ways. I'm in a band which I love playing in, even though we've probably nexer played in front of more that 100 people. I play music, badly, and I love listening to it too. I write articles infrequently for a great little site called denofgeek.com. I go to grat gigs. I've just been at an amazing music festival before enjoying the edinburgh film festival straight after, and for free no less! I have an enjoyable life.

Things I'd like to change?
-I'd like more hours at my job, to get more money. And it pisses me off that they'd employ more people rather than give their existing employees, who work part time more hours, when it's clearly possible. It makes no sense.
-My parents are bugging me for money that I don't really have, due to the above. I don't want to get another job because 3 or 4 years looks better than 2 and a half, and I'd get paid more and have more time off I keep working where I am.

Money. That's it. The thing that I don't like about my life is just money. Sucks don't it. Anywho...

I'm here to talk about Television.

Flash Gordon
It's Terrible. Completely god awful. The fact that it hasn't been cancelled is shocking. How could Sci-Fi be so right with Heroes, yet go so wrong with this garbage. It's overglossed, underthought tripe. The actors can't act and everything is taken way too seriously for what Flash Gordon should be. I'll say it again, it's terrible, and that's all that needs to be said really.

The Bionic Woman
It's better than I thought it would be. It is. It's not as cheesy as the original seems now, and it's put out in the right way too. And that chick from eastenders? I never thought I'd say this, but she really kicks some ass! The effects team are a bit wank, but I suppose that will get better. Plus, Bionic vs Bionic looks like an awesome feature of the entire season. So in essence, it's good. Could be a bit better, in small patchy places, but nothing that won't be ironed out. I enjoyed it, but it may not be a love of mine. Only time will tell...

Journeyman
Right, so the first 5 minutes go through 2 days and 2 times traveling missions. Way too fast and way too impersonal. The next 35 minutes are absolutely fantastic. Time travel is always cool, but when it's completely involitary, it a lot more chaotic. It's brilliant. Nothing more to be said, apart from this: Watch it.

Chuck
It's great. Essentially, it's a secret agent show with the great influence of Josh Swartch’s writing and experience on The OC pulling up its boots.  I hope it enjoys a complete season, at least, and I’m glad it’s landed itself on WB rather than Fox, for longevity’s sake. Brilliant.

It's Always Sunny In Philidelphia Season 3
4 episodes into the third season. It's brilliant. Un-PC as ever and still rolling high laughs and insane episodes.

Family Guy Season 6
Season opener? Star Wars: A New Hope 40 minute parody. Whatever that suggests to you, it is it. It's good and bad in different places, but when it all rolls out at the end, it is quite enjoyable. It's funny and it even makes refrence to the fact that Robot Chicken did this a few months ago. It seems movie spoofs are all the rage in family guy these days, with apparent episodes coming up based on Bill and Ted and All Dogs Go To Heaven too.

Farscape
I've gotten through 2 and a half seasons of it now. It is brilliant. Compelling, complex, fun and mind-fucky. Which is exactly what I want from a sci-fi show. What more needs said? Oh, they changed the theme third season. Idiots. Original kicks ass. *sigh*

The Daily Show

I love it. Especially when he gets the sniff on a huge story. Like OJ being back in the press.

Can't wait for: Mighty Boosh series 3, Heroes season 2, CSI season 8, Scrubs final season (please, don't suck), 24 (mainly because of a spoiler I heard), Desperate Housewives (new cast member and storylines = good), My Name Is Earl season 3 (story is important), Smallville (Guilty pleasure) and Stargate Atlantis (new cast members make it needed to see).

Ahhhh. To be young and in shorts.

Edi-feddy Filmy Festo [21 Aug 2007|05:03pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]
[ music | People talking about movies! :P ]

So, Here I am in Edinburgh, trying to put my two days worth of films into this tiny blog entry before skipping off to catch more movies, and a bite to eat.

What can I say? I want to do this forever. I love saying to people all of my misguided notions about movies. And to do this for ages and get paid? Dream job.

What can I say? It's all a bit stressful and I'm pretty sure my eyes will be a different shape when I return home, but it will have been worth it.

So far I've seen:
Year Of The Dog: New film from Mike White... Y'know, that guy in School Of Rock who's friends with JB? He wrote that, and this, but this was his first directing job. Anyone who watches scrubs will know the leading lady as the Ambulance driver in the episode where Cox has to ride around in it... Season 4 I think. I even got to meet Mike White!

Death Proof: Seriously, go and see it. Pure QT magic. And, we met the stunt double for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, one of the leads in the movie, and she is a great lady. Plus, the movie? God, fantastic.

Ex-Drummer: People will not like this movie. I enjoyed it. It's wierd and arrogant, but well directed and beautifully put together. Danny hated it. Intresting double review to follow.

Wierdsville: Enjoyably dark comic adventure in a Harold and Kumar get the munchies style, but not... You'd have to see it to know where that comes from. It's good.

Next up is Stardust and I'm really looking forward to it. Adios Amigos. Real full reviews to follow soon.

Song(s) of the week- Week 1 [20 Jun 2007|03:32pm]
[ mood | calm ]

Alright... so, Danny started this, but theres no reason I can't join in is there? No. There isn't. Because I just decided to do this before I went to to work, I don't have lots of time so:

1. *Shels - The Conference of Birds
Listen

Never have I heard such a promising song. Running at almost 9 minutes in length and giving Neil the line "Well, I can give up writing music just now!" *Shels are a hot new post-rock topic. Out of the ashes of Mahumodo came two bands: Devil Sold His Soul and *Shels, the latter having just picked up it's heels. This song shows a powerful underbelly of post rock knowledge and and inspirational metallic vibe at just the right moments. It is an understatement to say that this song is bursting with ferocious fire and lumbering riffage. Not to mention, and incredible trumpet section. An incredible song which will hopefully lead up to a classic album.

2. Parts And Labor - Fractured Skies
Listen

Staying on the post rock boat, we move into a more technological intensity from Parts And Labor. Using the brilliance of 65daysofstatic styling, they create an upbeat song which gives you the pure fire of the heart to make you march, run and dance with a huge smile on your face. I have no idea what the guy is saying, but who needs to when a brass section can do that work for you? Yes, another brass section. These two songs fit so well together that Pelican, who got slapped in the middle, don't have a fighting chance. Intense, uplifting, energetic technological post-rock fury. What more do you need?

Both songs are available on Rock Sound's covermount CD. The other songs on there are great too.
