Which one do I open?

mood: crazy
So I am now in posession of 11 of the 250,000 limited numbered copies of The Slip that are in existence on CD/DVD. Here they are in order, along with notes as to why the numbers are significant.

11,919(lowest number I got)
22,191(also a low number)
35,958(yet another lowish number)
100,002(SO close to exactly 100k)
155,123(closest I have to a midpoint, ends with 123)
179,880(sequential with next)
179,881(sequential with previous)
186,230(sequential with next)
186,231(sequential with previous)
198,765(98765)
209,700(highest number I got)

I'm leaning toward opening number 155,123 but I'm open to input. I'm also open to the suggestion that I need to buy 16 more copies so that I have 27 in total because this is Halo 27. hehehe

Update: I may have to open three copies. There are apparently three different stick packs depending on what number you get. 1-100k has one set, 100k-200k has another set, and 200k-250k has the third set, though anomalies have been found to exist. So I guess I'd better open 35,958 and 155,123 and try really hard to find another one in the 200k+ range...?

music: Nine Inch Nails - Head Down
Friday, August 29, 2008
Wachovia Center, Philadelphia, PA
Section 114, Row 1, Seats 11, 12, 15, & 16.

There was a limit of two seats per order, so I had to use both Firefox and IE with frantic refreshing in order to get four, but there's only two between us so I think that's pretty damn good.

Nine Inch Nails on Facebook
03:21pm 23/04/2008
Having completely given up on the new rule, I just published my first Facebook application. It lets you show off your NIN collection, embed a NIN music player (currently playing selections from Ghosts I-IV), and/or pull from several different NIN-related RSS feeds. So if you use Facebook and are a fan of NIN, add Nine Inch Nails to your profile!

Update:

I posted about this on Echoing the Sound, the most popular NIN forum on the internets, and so far the feedback has been 100% positive. In a little over an hour I went from 14 users to 69 users, which made me giggle enough that I had to take a screenshot.

I WAS going to say that the actual success of this will be determined by whether or not anyone actually spends any money through it, but I think all the positive feedback I'm getting from NIN fans is enough reward for this particular project.

(In the time it took me to type this edit, I went up to 4 fans and 75 users.)

Saul Williams last night in Annapolis
10:51am 07/04/2008

mood: musical
music: Saul Williams - List of Demands
Dan and I saw Saul Williams last night at Ram's Head On Stage in Annapolis. On Stage seats maybe 100 people at MOST. It's a dinner and a show kind of place so everyone is at tables and servers are coming back asking if you want drinks or appetizers through the whole show. For a performance as big as Saul Williams, this kinda makes things a little awkward for both performer and audience.

I felt bad for the opening act. They were great, but it took them until their second-to-last song to get people to get out of their fucking seats. We were at table 1. Front center stage. I could have reached out and untied Saul's shoe laces if I wanted to. When he came on, it was looking like it was going to be another sit-in, so between the first and second song, I conspired with the other people at my table that we would be the group that got everyone on their feet. They still didn't stand up until I did, but it got the rest of the place on their feet so hopefully we made the band feel a little less like they were doing dinner theater :)

Saul actually made a comment along the lines of "Well this is awkward. Welcome to Ram's Head. I hope everyone is enjoying their appetizers. I'm Saul Williams and we'll be your entertainment for the evening." He was pretty funny about it. According to Dan, bands kind of get strong-armed into performing there. The owner of the club is partnered with a subsidiary of Ticketmaster, and they basically say "you can't play any of our other venues unless you also play Ram's Head On Stage." Kind of a shady tactic to get big names into a tiny little club and I feel sorry for the bands that get forced into it, but I can't tell you how glad I am that they do it, because last night was a fucking amazing experience.

The show itself was great. Saul Williams is a very powerful performer. They played several of my favorite songs and he did some poetry as well. Some of my favorites that I remember from the set list: Black Stacey, Tr(n)igger, Convict Colony, NiggyTardust, Scared Money, Banged and Blown Through, and WTF! Halfway through List of Demands, this little girl who looked about 13 came on stage with a mic to do the "wah wah wah" and then finished the rest of the song with him. After the song was over, he mentioned that when she originally recorded the "wah wah wah" for List of Demands, she was a lot smaller. He introduced her as his daughter and they did Sunday Bloody Sunday together. She wasn't the greatest singer on the planet, but she was having a fantastic time and he was very visibly proud to be sharing the stage with her. It was pretty fantastic. For the encore, Saul came out by himself and performed Coded Language. If you've never heard it, you should.

Saul Williams had a lot of really powerful messages to convey. To name three:

Ignoring Race is Racism
Be Yourself
You are Music

Addendum: I don't know if it's because I've been playing a lot of Rock Band or because I was close enough to see the band's pores, but during the opening act, I found myself spending a lot of time really paying attention to everyone's instruments, focusing in on the sounds that each individual instrument was making and really hearing everything they were doing. Not so much that it detracted from my enjoyment of the music, but enough that it enhanced my appreciation of the music. (Thanks Kevin!)

music: Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug
God damnit.

So, I'll admit that I was a big fan of Donkey Konga (wiki, amazon), but none of the other rhythm games have ever interested me. I tried DDR (www, wiki, amazon) once or twice and just didn't like it at all. My cousin got Karaoke Revolution (wiki, amazon) for Christmas last year and we had some fun fooling around on that, but not enogh that I'd want to own it. I never tried Guitar Hero (www, wiki, amazon). The whole thing always seemed so silly because it was so much NOT like playing a guitar and I just didn't have any interest in it at all.

But when Rock Band (www, wiki, amazon) was coming out and they starting announcing artists that would be in the game, I saw that Nine Inch Nails (www, wiki, amazon) was going to be represented. That got me a little interested, but not interested enough to buy it or anything. That'd just be silly. I figured it was just a cross between Guitar Hero and Karaoke Revolution. Then a couple weeks ago, they came out with the first Nine Inch Nails track pack. That interested me enough to invite John to bring his 360 over so I could give it a try. I mean, I sing along to NIN all the time. I did okay at Karaoke Revolution. I've been told I'd make a good front man. I figured I could rock some vocals.

Turns out I'm a drummer. )

Fuck You, Vista
03:28pm 06/03/2008

mood: annoyed
So... Just in case any of you ever needed to know this information, Windows Vista doesn't let you use multiple video cards unless all of the video cards use the same driver. That means if you've got a sexy ATI card as your primary and you want to toss in a cheap nVidia to power tertiary monitors, you can't do it. You have to get another expensive ATI card that will use the exact same drivers. Pain in my fucking ass.

Of course this worked fine in XP, and in fact you can use the XP drivers in Vista and it'll work, but then you can't use the fancy Aero affects that Vista gives you. That's bullocks.

Of course Windows 7 will support it, but I don't think I'm going to wait around for another year and a half or more to get my third monitor up and running at work.

So my ATI x1300 video card that matches the one already in my machine is on the way from Amazon. Of course my current card is AGP and the new one is PCI and they're different manufacturers, but everything I've read says that they should still use the same drivers and this should work fine. But in my opinion, it should have fucking worked fine with the GeForce 5200 I picked up at Best Buy.
