Welcome! [05 Dec 2015|05:30pm]
Hello and welcome to my livejournal! Sometimes this is more like my deadjournal, because I tend to disappear for weeks (edit: Jan. 11, 2007--okay, OKAY, months XD) on end. :D;;; But I always come back! I also have a tendency to turn off comments because I am obsessive-compulsive about answering every single one (I'm working on getting over that) and this wreaks havoc with my work schedule. Edit: Jan. 11, 2007--I have more or less learned to deal with the obsessive-compulsive bit, finally! I will probably start turning the comments on now, sometimes--if I do not reply to your comment individually, be assured that I really wanted to, but the energy had to be saved towards getting more comics done!

This journal is public-only--there are no secret entries and what you see when not logged in, is all there is to it :)

If you friend me and would like to be friended back, please introduce yourself in the comments to this post! Just a little bit about yourself, what you do, where you're from, your name, etc. Thank you! (NOTE: It may take me a while to get back over here and do the actual add.. Like, a month or two sometimes :D;;; But I always do!)

I enjoy a great many things in this world and when there is something I enjoy I like to inflict share that joy with friends (or enemies, or whoever else is unfortunate enough to be nearby.)

Today, I share with you "FreakAngels" by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield, a free webcomic you should be reading if you aren't already. (Intended for Mature Audiences, so make sure you are Mature and/or not easily offended before clicking! :D) It's no secret that I am a fan of Warren's work, but what you probably didn't know is that Paul's art makes me want to sneak into his house at night and steal ALL HIS ART SUPPLIES AND POWERS. I mean, just look at this page, especialy the last panel. And THIS one.
While I wait impatiently for the trade paperback, I draw fanart (click on image for full picture):

In other news, we saw Wall-E this weekend... I cried pretty much through the whole thing and will own it on DVD the moment it comes out. Amazing movie, I should probably propose next time we see each other... XD

Penciling Nightschool today. I.. I am having fun. Working. SOMETHING'S NOT RIGHT HERE :D;;;

Speaking of Nightschool! My good friend [info]deedupuy (aka toner extraordinaire for both Dramacon and Nightschool) wrote a brilliant primer on the topic of "What's this Toning Thing, Anyway?". It's posted on my favourite manga blog called... MangaBlog. :D And! It showcases a couple of preview pages from Nightschool for the curious! Linkety link:

Heeeeey, guess who! :D I kind of disappeared for half a year there, didn't I... Again... Well, I had good reasons!! Work ate me :O

I am slowly starting to come back to the internets but before I am back completely I need to just quickly post about the fanart contest for the collected Dramacon volume (due out this fall):

The contest was over, but I asked that the deadline be extended to allow for a second round in case anyone from lj land wants to participate as well. (People who have already submitted--your entries are received, safe and sound, thank you very much!)
The new deadline is July 7th morning! The details of where to send stuff are in the above link.

And now I crawl off to bed. x___x Cool comic links tomorrow + a couple of updates!
Happy belated Canada day and an early 4th of July to all,
Svet!

Hi, guys! Again, it's really late at night that I write this, so excuse the typos and/or any hideous oversights...
I did some f-list maintenance--snipped off some dead ljs and people who asked to be friended but didn't friend me (o__o??;;), as well as added the new people who asked (welcome! :D). If I cut anyone in error or missed your request and didn't add you back, just let me know and I will fix!

Quickie post [06 Dec 2007|03:20am]
Because a few people have asked, here is my New York Anime Festival schedule! Sorry I took forever to post it and that the con is now like, tomorrow... XD;;;

FRIDAY:

3 to 4 p.m. DRAMACON 3 launch party (TOKYOPOP booth, sounds like there may be snacks!! :3 I'll be doing a little presentation on the third volume which is supposed to naturally transform into a signing. Or something.)

SATURDAY:

11 a.m. to 12 p.m.--Breaking Into Manga (TOKYOPOP creator group panel, whoo!)
2 to 3 p.m.--YEN PRESS Industry Panel (will be talking a little about Nightschool and making sure the panel doesn't accidentally become a karaoke session. Because with those guys YOU JUST NEVER KNOW)
4 p.m.--"Nightschool" signing at YEN PRESS booth--there is no book yet, obviously, but there will be these mysterious things called 'shikishi boards', which are kind of like signing cards, I believe. I drawed a drawing for those. :B

SUNDAY:

11 a.m. to 12 p.m.--a group presentation with 2 of the lovely TOKYOPOP lady authors--Amy Reeder Hadley of "Fool's Gold" and M. Alice LeGrow of "Bizenghast". It's basically going to be us three versus our poor editor, Lillian. Who will prevail??
2 to 3 p.m.--Writing For Manga--also a group panel. All guy cast except for me, which sounds like a shojo manga set-up if ever I saw one *giggle*

Also, I should hastily inform everyone that the Dec. 11 street date for volume 3 was a clever deception of the trusting masses here in Svetlania and we, the trusting masses, were very surprised to find out the book has already been out for a week. OOPS :D;;;

Son of Also:

I wonder if anyone will find all of the Mr. Raccoon cameos... There are 4 in addition to the pack on the first page and the last two are especially good at blending in with the paper :3

Happy New Year, everyone! ...Belatedly :D;;;
One of my New Year's resolutions is to update this place more often. So here I am!

*************

First off, a quick announcement to the California/LA area people:
I will be in LA at the end of this month, courtesy of Anime LA who invited me as a guest!! The convention will run from Jan. 26 to Jan. 28 and I am scheduled for a few panels and 2 signings, I believe. So come on out and say hi! :D
The site is here http://www.animelosangeles.org/anime-la/2007/ (pre-registration cut-off is this Sunday!)
Can't wait for this one *waves at pinkchan and other LA peeps* Whooo!

*************

Secondly, I updated my website a little. Glory be! It's very pink now and it has my con schedule so far for 2007 (there may be another con or two going on the list).
I am also finally the right age in the 'About' section, hee hee. Sweet, sweet 18...

*************

Thirdly, and this is website-related again--I am working on the FAQ section and I need to figure out which questions I should include in there. So, I was wondering if you guys could do me a huge favour? Could you post in the comments what questions you'd like to see answered there?

*************

Love and hugs for the New Year,
Svet!

2 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS!

.:~1~:. I will be doing a book signing in Toronto this Sunday, Nov. 26, along with a merry crowd of fellow comic book creators. Click here for the flyer and more info! They should have both Dramacon 1 and 2 for sale, as well as the Mangaka America book (which turned out too gorgeous for words… Go Tania and Will!!!)

.:~2~:. ABC introduces manga and graphic novels to the TV-watching masses! Link here. From what I understand, if the online article garners enough interest, this may become something more than just an online piece! So, if you guys have a moment, please read the article and then use the ‘e-mail this’ option on the page to send the article to anyone you think needs to read this—friends, enemies, pets, debt collectors, comics-haters, etc… Let the infection spread far and wide! Until EVERYone is reading comics, mwah-ha-ha!!!

-----------------------------------------------------

Also, have a Happy Thanksgiving, all you people in the US who celebrate such a thing! We Canadians already had ours (being the forward-thinking folk that we are). Nyah nyah! Which means I don’t have to eat enormous amounts of meat and pastries today, hahahaha!

I love rain [03 Aug 2006|02:54pm]
[ mood | tired ]

It's raining here today--calm summer rain that broke the horrible humid heat of yesterday. I had to go out and through the courtyard to get to the superintendant's office to fill out a work order for some repairs, and I dawdled on my way back, just basking in the light drops. I took off my sandals and walked about in the wet lawn grass, through the water puddles on the sidewalk--squish squish, splash splash. Turned up my face towards the rain. I can still feel the water's cool afterburn in my skin. ^_____________^ Can't remember the last time I've done this, been so busy these past few years.

I had to wash my feet when I got back, of course, 'cause god knows what they spray those lawns with, ew.

Also: Hello! *waves* I've been away. In case people haven't noticed. *dodges things being thrown at her person* XD

I've been away because I've been very busy, too busy to blog, even, forget attending to forums and updating comics and whatnot. It was nothing particularly fun or exciting, so I'll do a quick re-cap:
--Dramacon 2 was a beast, I thought I'd never finish it. But it's done! Thank heavens for [info]deedupuy, the bestest toner ever who stayed up the long hours it took to finish the book. The thing is off at the printers as of last week. *throws salt over shoulder*
--there was a medical emergency in the family back in May, which involved a hospital stay, an operation and a difficult recovery period. But all is well now! *knock on wood*
--CosmoGIRL page every month. Nothing to sneeze at, yo.

So, I am somewhat back. Recuperating after the last mad deadline dash--I had to hand in the book, then pull off a CosmoGIRL page, then scrub around the apartment for a day and OW my arms and back and neck and every single muscle I didn't even know I had...

Still not functioning at 100%, but getting there. Tonight I am working on a Night Silver page--there will be an update tomorrow (might be a little late), as well as a proper Dramacon 'yay done here look pikchurrrs' post. And a Chasing Rainbows update on Saturday.

Later today I will come back to add all the lovely people who have commented on the introduction post--sorry I took so long to get to this ^__^;;; I think I'd better put a note on there regarding my inevitable tardiness with, oh, everything XD

Right now I'm off to drink tea. Because tea is awesome. You know, I attempted to drink coffee in the last stretch of Dramacon, with the purpose of keeping myself awake? And it didn't work!! I endured the awful awful coffee taste for nothing! So, it's obvious to me that tea is by far a superior drink and I shall never ever again stray from it. Note how comments are totally off so that none of you nasty coffee drinkers can argue with me on this XD

Ta!

Gwaaaahhh.... [28 Feb 2006|11:21pm]
[ mood | hack wheeze cough ]

I am back from NYCC (greatest weekend ever) and am sick with flu or something--spent today crawling around like a half-squashed bug, skin and throat hurting like OW, fever going up to 39C x___x I'm drinking NeoCitron, though, and that's helping.

I also feel like a complete jerk about something that will make me feel guilty for months to come... During the second Dramacon signing a little girl came up and wanted to speak with me. I couldn't do it right there and then because people in the line had already been waiting for a while and it would've been unfair to them. So I promised the girl that if she'd wait, I'll speak with her after the signing. AND I FORGOT. _Completely_. I had an interview right after and the signing ran slightly overtime, I think, because the interviewer was already there when I was done and a TPOP person was ushering me in her direction. In the shuffle I completely forgot about the little girl *headdesk headdesk headdesk*

In the vain hope that she sees this entry--I AM SO SORRY!! Please e-mail me!! ;___;

And her Mom was there, too, and I exchanged smiles with her and all.... *cringe* I feel like such an ass for forgetting. I mean, granted, it was an insane day and my brain was totally fried from the presentation (well, even more so than usual, anyway), but still, I imagine them waiting and waiting and waiting, only to find out that I disappeared...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! *crawls into a hole*

...Besides this tragic faux pas on my part, the weekend was incredible. Thanks to everyone who came by to see me!!! \;o;/ It was so great to meet you all, I was really dreading the presentations but they turned out to be so very very fun instead. Thank you!

I am going to sleep some more now--first part of con report going up tomorrow!

*deliriously yours*

Zoom zoom... [22 Feb 2006|01:20pm]
[ mood | rushed ]

New York Comic-Con this weekend!!

And Dramacon is due for two presentations/signings. *** Click Here For Details! ***

-------------------

Man, I'm both excited and nervous... Besides the fact that I'm not very good with presentations in general, this will be my first con signing since the book came out. Back when I was on my own and had all of ten (well, okay, maybe 11 XD) fans, cons were a pretty mellow affair--I'd sit behind my Artist Alley table and people would be like: "Oh, hey, is that Fred Gallagher?!" and zoom right by. And I'd be like: "FRED GALLAGHER, WHAT?!" and zoom right by my table, too. LOL

I wonder what it will be like now... Hopefully not like my Otakon presentation* XD

For the unapologetic fangirl that I am, this con is going to be so awesome. Colleen Doran will be there!! And she'll have the new "A Distant Soil" trade! *glee* I can't believe it's been only 5 years since we met. Seems like so much longer--so much has happened! I can't wait to see her again--I doubt we'll have a chance to chat, since cons are always so busy for everyone, but damned if I'm walking away without getting my books signed this time!!

Also, Kevin Smith. 'Nuff said. \^o^/ And I want to really check out the superhero comics scene--I don't know nearly enough about it.

What I'm looking forward to the most, though, is seeing my editor along with the TPOP gang, hanging out with other OEL creators and meeting the fans.
...And learning as much industry gossip as I possibly can >3>

In the meantime, I have a day and a half to run a billion errands, pack, do the alotted share of work and be up on Friday morning at 5:30 a.m. so as to be on time for my flight *weep* I already skipped sleep on Monday (and made up for it by sleeping 12 hours today!), hopefully I won't have to do that twice in the same week...

Will report when I come back next week! See you soon!
*commences last-minute panic*

*[EDIT] Here was a recount of the Otakon presentation (my first one, for Dramacon), where I said there was no one there at the very beginning except for me, my editor and some tumbleweeds. However, it was brought to my attention that my memory is fo' shizzle and there was, in fact, at least one person there ([info]bobbarker *waves*). Whom I did remember (thanks for coming by! :D) but thought to have attended the second presentation, not the first. OOOPS. I think it's official--my memory cannot be trusted. Let's just all pray that I never have to be a witness in a crime investigation XD

Let it snow let it snow let it snooow... [13 Feb 2006|01:13am]
[ mood | sleepy ]
[ music | E.S.Posthumus "Unearthed" ]

It's snowing. Well, gushing snow is more like it--the town is already blanketed in white and roads are, well. What roads? Snowplows will be out on the prowl soon, clearing the way for a new work week.

It's been a strange couple of months. Mostly I just kept my head down, worked, hung out with friends a little. I even went shopping a couple of times! I now finally have a pair of dressy pants and a pretty black evening top for an upcoming fancy-shmancy dinner. Because, hell, who knows--maybe them fancy-shmancy restaurants don't let you in if you're sporting hobo comic book artist fashion (aka second-hand t-shirt and well-worn jeans).

Been doing some soul-searching, too. It's new to me, having my stuff read by so many people. I am finding it difficult to adjust to the attention, I never liked being in a spotlight of any kind. *this is where knowing chuckles are heard from people who've seen me at the TOKYOPOP panels. I blend in well with those chairs, no? XD* Frankly, I much prefer to lurk and watch people from the shadowy corners. I like to chat, but in small groups of people--crowds make my social anxiety flare up something nasty. The upside of this forced interaction, though, is that I've met a lot of very cool people on this journey already. And it's only the beginning! Hopefully, anyway.

Like I mentioned, the script for the second Dramacon is DONE. It was very difficult to write, the first one was much easier--things just sort of fell into place then. But this one just wouldn't come together right. I had to cut out characters and entire scenes, sew it back up and then beat it with a bat to make it live (because I am too cheap lazy practical to do that whole Evil Genius Lab thing and harness electricity from lightning or whatever). The good news is that the effort's been worth it, or so I've been told by my lovely proof-readers. And I didn't even have to pay them to say that! Is very encouraging.

Life in general is not particularly exciting--I stay at home and I work. And the only exciting thing that happened there was this one time when we had three strange men in our bathroom. Breaking off the tile around the bathtub and replacing it with new ceramic. The. Entire. DAY. And we got warned about it only the night before: "Oh btw, there'll be people coming tomorrow to rip up your bathroom. Have a good night!" Svet: "....Wait, WHAT?!" So that was an interesting day. And by interesting I mean 'let's not do this EVER AGAIN, okay?!'

Still working on the CosmoGirl comic every month, apparently it's been getting really good feedback from the readers. I am very glad, I work really hard on those pages, as do the editors. Speaking of which, here is funny story... Usually the CG editors and I work out an outline before I sit down to write the script for an installment. But it's been a busy past few weeks for everyone, so we kind of forgot to do that for this month, and I only realized it when I sat down to script. Hilarity ensued:

Svet: Hey guys, we never decided on an outline
CG: *praises Svet for being on top of things and expresses full confidence that she can just tap her genius and come up with stuff without them*
Svet: *bask bask* ...Wait, what?
CG: *busy*
Svet: Huh. Well, okay.
Svet: *taps genius*
Genius: Experiencing technical difficulties, please stand by.
Svet: ...Uh-oh. *tap tap taaaap*
Genius: We are sorry, this service is temporarily unavailable.
Svet: Nonononono *TAAAAAAP!!*
Genius: Out of order, sorry for the inconvinience.
Svet: ................. *expletive deleted*

I laugh through the tears. As are all the writers on my f-list, I'm sure XD

Here is another funny story (you get two, since I was away for so long). One fine afternoon I was preparing some stuff for mailing and my Mom saw that I lick the envelopes to seal them. I was immediately made to halt that activity and it was explained to me that eating glue is not only unhealthy, but also an insult to her cooking*. It was suggested I use a wet sponge or something instead. Being the proper daughter that I am, I ignored the advice and 5 minutes later started licking another envelope. My Mom, of course, had to walk by again at that exact moment, and I guiltily froze in my tracks, looking something like this.

I don't need TV, for I AM MY OWN DAMN SITCOM XD

And with that, I bid y'all a good night. _I_ won't be sleeping, of course--I've got work to finish. But you? Do sleep, if you can. It'll make it that much easier for my ninja to draw mustaches on your collective faces in retaliation. IN PERMANENT MARKER, YO.

xoxo
Svet!

P.S. A big welcome to all the new folks on the list! Thank you very much for all the wonderful comments, I will try to reply as soon as I can :D

*she didn't really say the bit about the insult to her cooking. but it makes for a better story, so I snuck it in. never trust writers!

A brief update on me--buzzee buzzee buzzee. The Christmas season sure snuck up! But then, holidays always do this--ninja got nothing on these guys. It goes something like: "Oh, it's only October, I still have plenty of time to finish this thing and do my Christmas shopping andWOAH, WHAT DO YOU MEAN CHRISTMAS IS NEXT WEEK!!!!!111!1!"

I, uh. I look forward to elbowing my way through the Christmas shopping rush?.. :D;;;;

Please please please if you could you repost the information to this post, I'd be much obliged--it'll be much easier to keep track there. Thanks!

----------------------------------------------------

...Got back from the dentist just a little while ago. 2 fillings replaced and a chipped one fixed. And she poked at the other billion fillings I have (sugar to Svet's teeth: "Ha ha, PWNED!!") and said that they will need to be replaced soon, too. I WEEP OPENLY.

(She also thinks I might be grinding my teeth at night. For some reason I find that image extremely disturbing. D: )

I've been away from happy internet land because I've been very busy with things. Mainly with the script for the second Dramacon :D;;; I remember the script for the first book--it just sort of happened, I barely had to rewrite anything at all. And this one's been like pulling teeth. Woe! But at least the hard part's finally done.

Dramacon 1 got 4 stars at Anime Jump (thanks to [info]jeepersjournal for the heads-up!). Interesting to see it being compared to MegaTokyo, though it's too bad that the comparison was in a negative light... Me, I like MegaTokyo :D I love the soft pencilled look of the art and I used to read it religiously back when it was still gag-strip format. Even though I drifted off once it became a very involved and complicated shoujo story (and when Largo kinda went cuckoo)--that changed after I read the recent few pages. Guess I'll be buying the third book, after all :D;;; Damn that Fred.

On an unrelated topic, here is a really cool thing that [info]rikkisimons did, "The Nine Faces of Comics". I laughed and laughed and laughed:

Yesterday was a bad day--I woke up with a headache, Tylenol would not work, and I had allergies the entire day for some odd reason. Sneezing 7 times in a row while your head is pounding is fun! (Only not really...)

Today is better.

Interesting article:

On an unrelated note, I didn't know who David Suzuki was until yesterday.

I stumble more and more often on startling gaps in my education--things that are apparently common knowledge, but I never even heard of. I'm guessing it's all the stuff I should've caught on with in high school, but it was somewhat limited-access to the English-language-impaired high school me.

You know, I devoured books as a kid. The russian TV programming was somewhat limited--kindergarten cartoons, the govenment session broadcast live (zzzz), and badly translated American movies once a week. So I read a lot--sci-fi, mysteries, romances, historical fiction, fantasy, etc. I was addicted to the written word (and I never got caught when I read in class! I was a very sneaky child :D).
But then I came to Canada and my reading time dropped through the floor. Reading an English book was about as enjoyable as looking at Egyptian hieroglyphics--I could tell something interesting was going on, but the story would miss me by a mile. Or a light year. And the fact that I had to consult the dictionary for every second word made reading feel like trudging through a swamp of words.

So I stopped. I concentrated on schoolwork double-hard, so that I didn't mis-translate something and god forbid failed a course. I watched TV and listened to people speak (subtitles are the best invention EVER), which really helped with learning the spoken language (real people should come with subtitles too, damnit). I know a lot about Star Trek now.
My efforts paid off and I did pretty okay in school--finished with honours, even, and got an entrance scholarship to Sheridan because of good marks. SCORE. However, the price I paid for that is that I now don't know who David Suzuki is :D;;;; He was never on a test, but I betcha he must've come up in someone's presentation for biology or something... Which probably sounded to me something like this: "english english english english David Suzuki english english english..." XD

But I do not despair! Language is now somewhat learned and under control (hey look, I wrote a book, whee!). Startling gaps in education--you're next >:3
*sacrifices small animals to the glory that is Google*

I was also gonna post art but then I realized that it's not scanned and I really should be working instead of frolicking on the web, so... Next time.

Instead, I will tell you about this TOTALLY AWESOME THING that [info]arcana_j made...

A DRAMACON soundtrack. And it's BRILLIANT.

Here is the track list, with her explanations for each song theme (WARNING, some spoilers) )

I got all teary-eyed on "Out Of Reach" and "Simple And Clean"... I'll see if I can rip some of the tracks and post them here (for evaluation purposes only, so that everyone buys the cds of these groups, please don't sue me, RIAA :D;;;;).
