A couple of days ago I promised
phistolemon_ to post about the so-called elite icon communities I did get posting access to, instead of writing about the ones I didn't get into.
I got accepted at
good_coloring,
minimal_icons and I'm waiting for a third mod at
good_cropping to say yes. All nice comments with some lovely compliments which are sitting in my inbox if I ever need to feel warm and fuzzy inside.
One thing though, what would you reply to a mod saying you need to watch the sharpness while using an oversharpened icon herself? Admittedly she didn't make the icon herself, she's right about some of my icons being slightly oversharpened and I myself am guilty of hanging on to icons that maybe are not that good, I simply like them too much to get rid of them... Never mind, it's not that important anyway. Iconz = srs bznz, right? ^^

How come my inbox is always so stuffed! >:(

Applying to elite icon communities and being turned down is actually turning out to be good for me. Somehow it's making me feel stronger and more determined. (Yes, I know I'm only talking about icons, but hopefully it will make a difference in general.)
The latest reply comes from one of the maintainers at
elitarts and it said
"Sorry for the delay, but I'm gonna to say NO, for now. Your cropping is really good, but you have to improve on colorings and the use of textures. Hope you'll come back in a month a re-apply ;)"
Since her comment was screened, so was my application by the way, I couldn't reply directly so I commented on the application post saying
(Since I can't reply to -maintainer's username-'s screened comment, I'll do it here. I hope that's okay.)
If I have to use more colourings and textures to get into this community I'm afraid it's not going to happen, not in the near future anyway, since at the moment I like my icons the way they are. Thanks for your time though. :)
At first I obviously interpreted "you have to improve on colorings and the use of textures" as in I have to improve on colorings and the use of textures, period. Which is exactly what it says actually. Anyway, this is her community and if she thinks icons need textures and colourings, then that is her opinion and who am I to argue with that.

For everyone, I'm reading this book called Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking and it's incredibly interesting on so many levels, if you were to ask me to quote the interesting bits, I'd probably end up quoting half the book. But I have to share the following quote with you:
"what happpens is that we come up with a plausible-sounding reason for why we might like or dislike something, and then we adjust our true preference to be in line with that plausible-sounding reason"
For icon makers, and everyone else who's interested, is it just me or is this what happens a lot in LIMS? I've certainly been guilty of it. Especially when it's not immediately clear to me which ones are the least quality icons, especially when I'm 'forced' to come up with a plausbile reason and I'm not 'allowed' to go with my gut instinct. This is what happens when (less experienced) icon makers have to vote on less quality icons supplying a plausible reason, they focus on whatever is prominent in that icon and give that as a reason. Everything that is then 'different' about the icon is viewed as 'ugly'. This is why you rarely ever win a LIMS, or any other icontest, with unique icons. If you want to win an icontest, it's better to make mainstream icons following trends and/or the style that seems to go down well with whoever is voting.

Home. Tired. Broken.
Thirteen hours car journey.
Was it worth the books?
To cut a long story short, I went to England and all I did was buy books.
And sit in a car for a total amount of 26 hours.
It's good to be home.
