Jazz On 3 [02 Oct 2008|02:22pm]
Listening just now to Monday night's Jazz On (Radio) 3, which features an entertaining and highly recommended interview with Phil Minton (http://www.philminton.co.uk/welcome.htm), plus a session from him, Roger Turner, Veryan Weston and John Butcher.
Blurb from the web page : "Jez Nelson presents a session of improvised music from vocal experimentalist Phil Minton and his Quartet, featuring John Butcher on reeds, Veryan Weston on piano and Roger Turner on drums. During more than four decades, Minton has been celebrated for his innovative approach to vocal performance. Using highly controlled breathing techniques, he produces sounds ranging from high frequency squawks to deep guttural bellows." Link : http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00dppp3.

Experimented at the Internet café with putting photos online. Hadn't realised that I'm able to change the size of pictures I've already taken (at too high a resolution to go straight online) using the camera's controls, but I guess it's logical as it means that important photos can be taken high-res and then be reduced for posting and switched back for good quality prints... or am I wrong ? Certainly the photo I tested this out on worked. Just feeling my way at the moment as digital photography is totally new and alien to me.

Another book cover design publication for my growing library of such things - The Art Of Romance, on Mills And Boon/Harlequin covers.

Put fifteen items online for auctioning. Took a while to get the pictures up as I'd taken them at too high a resolution, not yet being au fait with my camera, not having studied the info on the more hardcore disc which accompanies the printed beginner's guide - the Internet café chap managed to reduce them so they'd upload. Was there for a few hours typing in all the descriptions I'd scribbled down.

Cryptic, by Gordius : 7/32.

Unique book meme [23 Sep 2008|11:27am]
Via various folk, but [info]mermaidshotel (21/9/08) first of all.

List ten books you have on your bookshelf that you think nobody else on your friends list has on theirs.

(The instruction implies that readers don't possess all that many books - "bookshelf" ?! I've tons in my flat, plus a whole storage unit crammed with the things.)

1) Scarlatina : About Face.
"This book... is the culmination of a one-year project (August 1980 - August 1981)..." - weekly photo booth strips. Occasional guests accompanying Scarlatina into the booth included The Fugs' Tuli Kupferberg. Self-published, 1982, 16 pages, staple-bound. Is she still out there doing stuff ??

2) Encomia For Anthony Hancock, ed. Alastair Brotchie & Magnus Irvin.
Published for The London Institute Of 'Pataphysics jointly by bookartbookshop and Atlas Press. ISBN 1 900565 30 7. 2002. 48 pages. Mine is number 26 - the first 66 copies of the total 666 are signed by the many contributors including Stewart Home and Hancock scriptwriters Galton and Simpson. The book contains photos of excellent reconstructions of the paintings of Anthony St John Aloysius Hancock, as seen in the marvellous film The Rebel, in which Tony plays an artist.

3) B. Jagger : Your Book Of Basketball.
Faber, hardcover, 1961. Ex-library (The Green School For Girls, Isleworth). Think I found this in a charity shop, very cheap; I already knew of its existence. By Mick Jagger's dad, who was a basketball coach. A nice conversation piece.

4) Peter Keetman : A Week Of The Volkswagen Factory - Photographs From April 1953.
Dirk Nishen Publishing, 1987 - The Photo Pocket Book 2. Great paperback of 71 beautiful b&w photos, mainly of VW Beetles being built. Several abstract-looking ones, of various piles of the cars' constituent parts.

5) Der Kleine Goldfischteich.
Insel-Bücherei Nr. 255. No date. 24 lovely colour illustrations of goldfish, plus some pages of text (in German) at the back. In the series which apparently inspired Penguin's King Penguin series.

6) Gudrún Hrönn Ragnarsdóttir : Conversation Drawings 1. 1. 1980 - 30. 12. 1980.
1981. Number 53 of 100; signed. Collection of impromptu explanatory sketches made in the midst of conversations. A home-made musical instrument; artworks; how to get to the swimming pool; where a chemist's shop is; how to construct a frame; Icelandic grammar; the whereabouts of Zeeland, and more.

7) Fred Turley : Mighty Music At The Movies - The Cinema Organ In Sheffield And The Surrounding Area.
Sheaf, ISBN 1 85048 008 7. 1990. Local history paperback, landscape-format, with lots of nice old photos.

8) Ronnie Wharton And Arthur Clarke : The Tommy Talker Bands Of The West Riding.
1979. Tommy talker = kazoo. History of bands which played at carnivals and fêtes and in competitions, between the end of the nineteenth century and the Second World War. Steve Beresford wrote on the subject in an issue of Collusion magazine which he co-edited with David Toop and Sue Steward. Link to an article on the subject : http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/t_talker.htm.

9) Alessandro Bosetti : African Feedback.
Errant Bodies, ISBN 978-0-9772594-5-8. 2006. Sound artist Bosetti visited west African village residents and played them recordings by experimental and avant-garde composers, documenting their responses to the music. Book comes with CD of a piece constructed by Bosetti incorporating reactions.

10) Leon Wall & William Morgan : Navajo-English Dictionary.
Hippocrene, 1994 softcover edition of a 'fifties book. From the trestle table outside Colin Page's bookshop. Fascinating to see what the language looks like; and I like the idea of owning a book I'm extremely unlikely to actually need to refer to.

Screams from the ailurophobic woman in the flat next door punctuated the evening - that ginger-and-white cat had managed to gain access to and was roaming around inside our building again (see entry for 6th September). I'd thought I'd heard some jingling (bell) earlier and suspected as much, so I wasn't exactly surprised by the screaming. I picked him up and carried him down stairs to deposit him out front, which he was quite happy to have happen.

Listen list - all from my Bollywood section, by ten different composers :

X-word, by Brendan : 16/28.

An obituary of the great Norman Whitfield : http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/sep/19/popandrock.normanwhitfield.

From record finder Doug, whose basement flat I visited to plough through two big boxes of female artist 7"s :
# 2008/438 : Sonya Spence : When/ Sky Nation : When (Version) (Magnet MAG 60) - Sonia Pottinger-produced; 1976. Shall have to research the vocalist and the band Sky Nation
# 2008/439 : Pearly Gates : Johnny And The Juke Box (Polydor 2058 443) - written by Bickerton and Waddington, the team behind The Flirtations' Deram material - and The Rubettes ! Dull flip, unfortunately, but the topside is a fine example of that 'seventies take on 'sixties girl group heaven, complete with a handful of spoken pieces. Link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_Billups.
# 2008/440 : Suzette : It's Only Love/ Rockin' Rollin' Boy (DJM DJS.359) - 1975. B side lyric mentions, "T. Rex, Alice Cooper and Slade", so worth having just for that - a nice period piece. No idea who Suzette was - another to Google
# 2008/441 : Calibre Auto Recording, from a make-your-own record booth - someone singing The Wild Colonial Boy
Also picked up a couple of bits for Jeanette - Dolly Dots' Radio, as J. is very big on female Europop; and The Flirtations' mid-'seventies RCA 45 Mr. Universe - not outstanding, but certainly very nice

Listen list :
1) Nina Simone : Blues On Purpose (Philips)
2) Miranda Martino : Calda Estate D'Amore (RCA Victor) - with Morricone
3) Annette : Secret Weapon (Telmek)
4) Peggy Lee : Mary Jane (A&M) - off the excellent mid-'seventies Lieber And Stoller-produced set Mirrors
5) Rita Pavone : Clementine Cherie (RCA Italiana)
6) Alma Cogan : Never Do A Tango With An Eskimo (EMI)
7) Claudine (Longet) : Creators Of Rain (A&M)
8) Gigliola Cinquetti : Prima O Poi... Telefonerai (London)
9) Diane Renay : Growin' Up Too Fast (20th Century-Fox)
10) Etta James : Market Place (Crown) - 1986 issue, on an Ace Records subsiduary with a horrible, cheap-looking sleeve with lots of white space on the back they could easily have popped some information on. Not at all up to Ace's usual high standards, surprisingly - was Crown a budget label ? Still, no excuse...

Finally took the plunge and invested in my first digital camera - a Canon PowerShot 720IS, plus memory card, hard case and batteries. Made a few experimental shots of my shelves in the evening, but because of the flash will need to wait for daylight for photographing prospective online auction items. Link : http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/cameras/digital_camera/powershot/powershot_a720_is/index.asp. (Mine was £40 cheaper.) The online reviews I looked at (as Hassni recommended I do before selecting) seemed very positive.

X-word, by Pasquale : 7/24.

4) Gwen Johnson With Quinton Batiste Orchestra : A Trumpet Blows Away The Blues (Ace)
5) Brigitte Fontaine : J'ai Vingt Ans (Saravah) - lousy-pressing reissue with built-in crunch - kind of wish I'd taken it back and looked online for an original
6) Nellie Lutcher : There's Another Mule In Your Stall (Stateside)
7) Juliette Greco : Les Feuilles Mortes (Philips)
8) Alma Cogan : Do Do Do Do Do Do Do It Again (EMI) - off a superb double compilation
