Smurched from [info]ashamel, "MTV is apparently going to remake the Rocky Horror Picture Show. There is a petition against it."

Speaking as someone who has seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show more times than he can count, I would like to urge you not to sign this petition.

Rocky Horror, remember, was originally a stage show, of which I've seen several versions. Some didn't measure up to the film, but some were better (one of my favourite Rocky memories was of Stewart Wagstaff, as the Criminologist, trying to complete the line "Heavy, Black and Pendulous" after an audience member had yelled out "Describe your testicles!"). And there are other performers I'd like to see in the roles: here, for example, are Anthony Head as Frank and Amber Benson as Janet.

Admittedly, MTV are very likely to get it horribly wrong, particularly if they introduce new songs (as has been suggested)... but it's just possible that they'll produce something worth watching. IMHO, they should be permitted to try. Trying to veto new productions of Rocky Horror would be as wrong as trying to ban new productions of, say, Twelth Night or The Importance of Being Earnest.

If you must protest about a remake, why not try to save us from this one?

Subject:The Dark Knight
Time:11:33 pm.
Awesome, if a little overlong. Very grim, high body count, spectacular action scenes, and (all due respect to Jack Nicholson and Mark Hamill) the scariest Joker ever.

P.S. There's nothing to see after the end credits, but it's a good soundtrack.

Time:10:05 am.
Mood: amused.
I was too busy yesterday to notice that it was Post a Rejection Letter Friday, but I couldn't possibly have improved on this collection of gems [info]nick_kaufmann has extracted from Andre Bernard's Rotten Rejections: A Literary Companion, including rejections sent to Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Gunter Grass and William Faulkner.

Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along.

(I will write that trip report. Honest.)

From Carol Neist's review of Dreaming Again: "In contrast, it is surprising to see a tale by Stephen Dedman that is not perturbing in any way."

Subject:Writer's Block: Hope
Time:1:37 pm.
Mood: thoughtful.

What gives you hope for your future? How about hope for your world's future? Is hope hard to maintain?

View other answers

For my own future: my friends, and advances in medical and communications technology that makes it seem reasonably likely that there'll be some enjoyable and interesting times ahead.

For the world's future: the same technology, and our ability to learn from our mistakes. Granted, the latter isn't as fast or reliable as I'd like, but at least we have plenty of raw material to work with.

Is hope hard to maintain? Often, yes, but it's remarkably resilient.

From the SMH (yes, I double-checked to make sure it wasn't The Onion): the NSW government has introduced draconian new laws, making it illegal to annoy or inconvenience Catholics during World Youth Day. Offences such as "undertaking a Chaser-style stunt, handing out condoms at protests" or wearing a slogan T-shirt, attract a $5500 fine - which, as Greens MP Lee Rhiannon points out, is five times as high as the normal fine for indecent exposure.

Bizarrely, the laws also enable police to ask suspects to remove items of clothing in 'declared areas', which include bus and train stations, museums, the Opera House, and 500 schools.

The Catholic Church has denied asking for the measures gazetted by Deputy Premier Torquemada, which are more stringent than those in force during APEC.

So if you're going to flash anyone in Sydney on World Youth Day, better make sure you're not wearing a condom on your declared area.

Subject:That was the month, that was
Time:10:31 pm.
Music:"Life On Mars", David Bowie.
Two new stories published: 'Lost Arts' in Dreaming Again, and 'Adaptation' in Aurealis. One new story sold: 'Broken Images', to Midnight Echo; one new story finished and submitted, as well as two other submissions.

Sadly, the month ended with a rejection from ScreenWest for my teleplay, but at least that was a fairly quick response.

Off to GenCon Oz Wednesday :-)

Subject:Writer's Block: Choose a Power
Time:9:58 am.

If you could have the power to fly, be invisible, or teleport anywhere, which would you choose?

View other answers

Teleport. As much as I'd love to be able to fly, and while I can think of circumstances where invisibility would be useful, travel time (and expense) has consumed far too much of my life and prevented me from going to far too many places I would want to be. (I live in a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. 'nuff said?)
