Are there any marked jogging/running trails up in north Austin? I can't find a decent park or jogging trail up here; where do you fellow joggers living north go? I'd like to save some gas and not head down to the lake. Suggestions welcome, thanks! |

Another Frightening Show about the Economy
Ira Glass starts with the same cognitive dissonance I've been seeing: our economy, and those around the world are collapsing, and people are totally oblivious about it. Definitely a must-listen. |

My mother, in attempts to get me to go to someone for top surgery closer than Cleveland (I'm in NJ), gave me three surgeons to research. I called them each, got some general information, but wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with them. None of them are on transster, bleh.
--Bennet Rothenberg: Livingston, NJ --Paul Saccone: Maplewood, NJ --Jerome Spivak: Summit, NJ
Out of the three, Dr. Rothenberg seemed somewhat favourable, but lack of general internet information makes me worried. Thanks in advance!! |

From Saturday Night Live's spoof of the American VP debate:
Queen Latifah as moderator Gwen Ifill: Gov. Palin, would you extend same-sex rights to the entire country?
Tina Fey as Sarah Palin: You know, I would be afraid of where that would lead. I believe marriage is meant to be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers. But don't think I don't tolerate gay people. Because I do. I tolerate them with all my heart. And I know quite a few too. Not personally. But I know of them. I've seen Ellen.
The "sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers" bit in particular made me just about snort tea out my nose...
More here. And the headline they put on the article is sort of unintentionally humourous in its own right. |

I just read an article in the NY times about the new economic bailout bill and how it will make insurance companies give equal coverage for mental health and physical. Part of it said " The law will also encourage insurers to integrate coverage for mental health care with medical and surgical benefits. Under the law, insurers cannot have separate cost-sharing requirements or treatment limits that apply only to mental illness and addiction disorders" Think this will affect us at all? Don't really know much about it but thought I'd throw it out there.. |

Away from the radio and the news for three days, and in spite of the passage of the pork-barrel bailout bill, the financial numbers are still plummeting.
Can I have an "I told you so!" here, please? It's a case of the wrong solution at the wrong time for the wrong people.
The sub-prime credit rot is spreading. It has to play itself out. Things are going to be nasty for several years.
"We have to get consumption levels down, and savings levels up", says a pundit on "Diane Rehm". Well, duh! It's that spend, spend, spend, get a second mortgage, and spend some more thing that did it. Can I have another "I told you so"? Bush should have had people practice frugality instead of going shopping when 9/11 happened. He should have promoted a Savings Culture instead of an "Ownership" society. If you save money, you can get a home, too- but it takes longer.
I am not a consumer. I am a citizen. I prefer frugality to extravagance, although it seems that I need to re-evaluate my practice. Do I need both a landline and a cell phone? I keep wanting to shed the landline, but the rumors of brain cancer caused by long-term use of cell phones bothers me. I've tightened my belt about as tight as I can bear. |

One thing that became very clear to me while at FenCon was the sheer number of good books I need to either re-read or get acquainted with. There is a whole splattering of books in the 1632 series (thanks, msminlr!), and I've only read one or two. There are six books in Turtledove's Worldwar series, and I've read three. And of course, there's the SM Stirling series starting with "Dies the Fire", which is yet another in one of my favorite SF variations- the alternative universe. I love AU stories, as well as 'end of the world', military SF, and some space opera. Gregory Benford mentioned how so-called 'hard' SF (what I call nuts-n-bolts) has been nearly eclipsed by fantasy. In fact, if you look at the bookshelves, it's pretty much wall-to-wall fantasy. I like dragons, wizards, vampires, zombies and such, but I really prefer 'day after tomorrow' science.
But I have a lot of reading to do. I need to get into that Paperback Book Swap so I can catch up. A lot of the conversation in the van had to do with genre television- which I am not that much into- except for maybe Battlestar Galactica. I don't watch "Heroes" or "Torchwood" or most of the other genre stuff because I am tired of getting burnt- with series looking promising and then being canceled, like "Jericho" was. Phooey. Plus, I don't like being chained to a TV or fiddling with a DVR- I'd rather wait for the series to play out, then watch then in seasonal chunks.
I think I might see how well I do in writing- I have some short stories floating around in my skull that need to be written down. And I'd like to get back into costuming, too. I know a little more about sewing, and have some good people to help me out, so maybe I ought to dig out the sewing machine and get to work.
I noted that the age of the fans there tended toward older people- the folks who got into it in the sixties and seventies. There were a few younger people, but not as many. We need to make sure that new fen aren't just the children (or grandchildren) of fen. I did meet one delightful 18-year old who was brought into fandom by an aunt- his own family (like mine) could not see the point of anything 'make-believe'.
I also noticed a definite influx of steampunk and anime into the mix- lots of people in cosplay getup, and the 'military' folks of the Galactica, Stargate, and Browncoat 'verses. Uniforms are pretty easy to put together, but I've decided that I won't be getting back into that- simply because I had enough of the real thing, and don't need to do it again. There were a lot of folks doing self-publishing, too- apparently the market is wide open, and judging from some of the readings from really bad self-published fic, not well policed. I'd like to write, but am realistic about making money doing it- I probably won't. I'd like to join a writers group, but want one that promotes productive criticism and mentorship, not ripping people to shreds or cliquish closed-mindedness.
I do not have any delusions about my talent- or lack of it- I can write, but fiction is a bit different. Can I tell a story in such a way that it immerses the reader in the vision I've created? That's the ultimate goal. I figure that I have decent taste and judgement, and if I write a story that I want to read, others will probably want to read it, too. That's the key- I'm in it for my own fun, and if people like my kind of taste and style, that's good. There is precedent for success here: this blog, my early articles, and the dark_christian community. All of these have been efforts in introspection, placed in a publically accessible spot, and have grown into modestly successful endeavors. Can I do this with fiction? Probably- if I was able to do this with an obscure sub-sect of Christianity, and another obscure sub-sect of esoteric practice, it shouldn't be that big a leap with speculative fiction.
The caveat is that I must not let ego get into the way. Again, there is precedent- I am willing to share control of my communities with trusted others, and have let my articles be reproduced in other journals. I think that I have enough native confidence and stability to not permit others to dictate how I feel about myself. Been there, done that, fought the fight, and won. Ego is a destructive force, and if not counterbalanced by genuine humility (created by experience in life- including negative experiences), it will consume people, turning them bitter or worse. I prefer to be realistic about things. My chance of any palpable fame from writing is low, but I'm going to write because I like to do so, and I have valid ideas and concepts that should be shared. It would be cool to make a living from it- but I know that I could not do that because I need a large dose of the mundane world to inspire me. I need an outside job to prime the pumps. If I am modestly successful, that will be good. I can manage that. |

| About those STPs... |
|
|
| 02:53pm 06/10/2008 |
|

Okay, I have some questions about using an STP device that I haven't been able to find any discussion of...
I'm familiar with Charles' YouTube instructions, which are very helpful, but...
I got myself a Whiz. I will probably want something different at some point, because the size and color of the thing makes me not want to use it in public (at least not when trying to be stealth), but other than that it works fine for me. Meaning it doesn't leak, and it's manageable with one hand.
However, I have two problems. One might be solved by getting a device of a more sturdy material, I'm not sure. It's that I can't operate it through my fly, or even with my pants open, I need to have my pants all the way down around my thighs, which I suspect is not urinal kosher (and certainly not something I want to do - having my big female butt out in the open in the men's room). I guess it will be easier with a firmer device that won't bend when squeezed hard - but like I said, it's plenty firm to operate with one hand without leaking, so I'm not sure. I guess I'm just asking for others' experience with this.
Second problem: Even though I don't leak, there's always some drops of urine that gets caught around the urethral opening. Any smart ways to deal with that? It's not a lot, but still enough that I don't feel like rearranging my clothes without wiping. Maybe it's just the way I'm built... But honestly. I don't know any female-bodied people who don't wipe after urinating if it's anyway possible. Am I just being fussy? I really don't want to risk damp spots or smelling of urine. I suppose a device with a smaller entry could minimize the getting wet. Anybody have any experience or suggestions on this? Let me specify that I'm not talking about the device itself getting wet - I get that it's possible to hide it in your hand and rinse it while you wash without anybody noticing (although that makes me wonder about wearing a packer-and-STP in one - how do you manage that?). |

I thought it was going to be random, just choosing pretty, pretty peekchurs, but then I noticed a theme emerging, as it is wont to do with a notable (yet very worthy) exception.
Anyhoo,
I understand that Life on Mars is/was a bit of a BBC cult hit-- as we're prone to do here in the States, we're appropriating it and it's going to premiere this week. I'm intrigued by the premise. It's got a hell of a cast (OMG, Harvey Keitel on series television!) and speaking of the cast, a very, very pretty Irishman, Jason O'Mara, as the lead. I mean, he even makes the fashions look half decent, which is sayin' something.

This one is for my darling carrielofty because I know she lives in Fair and Pale land and she has a thing for Damian Lewis in particular. And because I found this dual pic of him alongside Steve McQueen and was struck by it and thought she'd like it.

( Sensing a theme yet? )
Let's see, let's see... who should I finish up with? Ah well, of course, again, the lovely David Tennant because I spent most of the weekend looking for pretty, pretty pictures of him. And many thanks again, to carrielofty for the oh, so lovely, Tired David. The things we decided we wanted to do to him in the interests of comforting...

The Detroit Shock did it Sunday - a clean sweep of the WNBA finals! I am so pleased - Katie Smith, Deanna "Tweetie" Nolan, Bill Lambeir - great series, great action!
Things that I am thankful for on this day:
* The Detroit Shock winning the WNBA championship! * Maxwell staying healthy. * My new business. * Finding the Elations site. * Knowing that things are progressing.
Blessings, Bonnie
