Hilarity Ensues
Here is a review of the frankly awful Frank Miller/Jim Lee All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. The review is decent, but that's not what I want to point out.

Scroll down to the comment from "Liz the Brit", who starts out with
Maurice also proves once again that he's even cleverer than he looks, by pointing out the obvious - to some - but the rarely-mentioned... that *Frank Miller* obviously sees some degree of paedophilia/sexual attraction/"creepiness" as Mr Broaddus phrases it, in the Batman-Robin, mentor-student relationship!

Well, Maurice: it is no SURPRISE that Frank Miller thinks thus, because Frank Miller, like a lot of right-wingers, is sexually warped... have I mentioned this before?? Some of them go for forced anal sex, though they INSIST they're not gay, vide "Sleepers" by Lorenzo Carcaterra, a brilliant book, actually, vide Abu Ghraib in real life... yes.. I think we know where the sexual focus of the neocons and their hangers-on really lies.
...and gets progressively more insane from there, ending with
Yeah, well. Don't buy this one for your kids, now, Christian readers... unless you want your children to die in desert sands, and unless you think comics with paedophile themes are great.
This is classic, classic crank writing, and we should thank the Internet for making it so much more accessible to all of us.

Hi - expecting to see *me*, were you? Yes, I have a livejournal too, as it happens - not that you'd be interested. However, I DO happen to know the above reviewer, Maurice Broaddus. I read his blog as well as HJ. The man has his faults - and his virtues. However, I do not appreciate cheeky sods off other sites - calling themselves T. Rev, whatever that's supposed to be - (play on T. Rex I daresay) at least my "alias" is plain and descriptive - unlike yours, Mr Lurker.

If you've got something to say, you can jolly well post it at the site it came from. Otherwise, you know what you can do. Yes, I'm an aggressive leftist - and I'm not ashamed to stand up for myself and what I believe in.

So - you reckon that Frank Miller's "All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder" is "awful". So - why are you spending the effort to defend Miller by ridiculing me, then?? There's nothing incorrect in what I said. It might have been a bit exaggerated - but aintcha ever heard of literary hyperbole - obviously not.

Frank Miller is well known to alert commentators to be a right-wing writer. His latest movie, "Sin City", even contained fascist elements. Go and have a look at this livejournal entry if you don't believe me! http://www.livejournal.com/users/commonplacebook/93332.html

Nothing "hilarious" about the above, or what I said on HJ. Why, Miller fan - are you?? Of his "earlier" work??

Idiots like you probably think the World Trade Center fell down pretty much as stated, and that conspiracies don't exist... well, thankfully, many people on all sides of the political spectrum no longer agree with your naievete.

However, I am not attempting to convince you of THAT - simply that you can no longer label things like that any more. Your "Faux News" viewpoint don't cut it any more.

All I am going to say is that I stick with all my previous Miller criticism: it is pretty obvious that intergenerational and pretty much inappropriate "romance" IS a key theme within his work: vide: "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Sin City". Miller's got something wrong with him there. Even some conservative reviewers say so. Old men having it off with kids - yuck. (Even if the romance is "suggested", not overt.) Even if Nancy waits for Hardigan till she's 18. It's still, sick. Especially considering the amount of fuss Americans generally make nowadays over age of consent! You lock people up for having sex a bit early - so why promote it in your fiction, unless it is to give your populace schizophrenia??

And the same goes for Frank Miller's obsession with his heroes calling their young charges "soldiers". This is all symptomatic of militarism. It's obvious. You only don't see it because you're surrounded by it.

Don't try it with the crank tag any more, because I'm not in a very good mood. I'll tell some of my livejournal friends about you, and we'll see what some of the more acid-tongued of them will guy you as.

oh, i would SO LOVE to see a study saying that having sex with older men "gives [a] populace" schizophrenia. is that what y'all are studying over there?

i'm fairly certain i've seen an interview or three wherein Miller discusses that his comics are places where he lets his most "degenerate" feelings run free. i thought, also, that it was fairly common in art for creators to be allowed expression of ideas or scenarios that are not generally "accepted" in the communities in which they reside (see: Bosch; Jake & Dinos Chapman; Goya's "Black Paintings"; Bret Easton Ellis, for starters). i mean, at the risk of invoking Godwin, i can think of some other people that advocated the destruction of 'degenerate' art. is that what you are proposing?

i am also interested to see "what some of the more acid-tongued of [your LJ friends] will guy [St. Rev] as," mostly because i have absolutely no idea what that means. i hope it is something awesome, so that i can, in turn, guy my friends as. i'm sure they would love it!

I forgot to congratulate you on this fantastic new troll. Well done, sir!

I love Thomas Hardy. He's so soul-crushingly depressing. I've read quite a few of his novels. This past week, I gave up on listening to The Return of the Native . The entire first disk was from the perspective of these 19th century British peasants who just droned on and on endlessly in their obnoxiously quaint dialect. Attempting to read some of the responses here had the same effect on me. I kept inserting the word "Guvna'" into the sentences. Now I'm going to be unable to listen to a Thomas Hardy novel without inserting "guy you as," which is just about the most insane phrase I've ever heard. I nearly refuse to believe that I could maintain a coherent existence in a world where "guy you as" has meaning.

Oooh, maybe this will qualify me for a tl;dr response. I hope so!

What are you, some kind of linguistics expert??
[info]lizfrombritain
2005-11-14 08:24 am UTC (link)
I doubt it!

Whatever you are, you don't understand British English - not even British newspaper English. "To guy" is a verb, taken from the dummies which are burnt every year on bonfires to "celebrate" "Guy Fawkes"... geddit?? "To guy someone AS" is a verb participle or some damn thing, of the same verb.... I don't know the terms for advanced grammar and all these clauses and bit of speech - I only went to a comprehensive school - d'you think they teach anything to you there, beyond nouns and verbs, if you're lucky? They do NOT! Yet I still have an excellent command of the English language; and am not bad in a couple of others.

Anyway: you might like to know, it is one of the commonest internet tactics, where whenever a rather small-minded person doesn't like something another person on a forum is saying, he or she takes some TINY element of that person's contribution, like a spelling mistake, and picks on that as a distraction from the main argument or discourse. (Or because they haven't managed to formulate a better criticism. It's rather like saying at a debating club: "And you... you... well your shoelaces are undone!") Well-known and over-used trick! BORING!!!
