12:44 pm - Other people's memories
Years ago my mom told me about my aunt saying this, in passing, and for some reason the anecdote rolled around and around in my head and without my realizing it turned into a little scene. I have been thinking a lot about women in art recently. I had a brief theory that there weren't as many women artists because women realize art is unimportant sooner than men do. I don't have any idea if this is true. I go back and forth on whether I think art is important or not.

1:59 am - The Dyer and her Daughters
Meg Hunt ([info]exitwounds) does some really neat stuff with patterns, which I've always admired, so I thought I'd mess around with more patterns too. I get a bit of a chuckle at how literal this sketch I wound up doing is. It is not how Meg uses patterns at all!

I think I have to cut myself off from drawing pensive ladies, especially faux-victorian pensive ladies with button-up dresses.

1:47 am - Frantically, desperately, trying to Chill.
Very Good News for me and Drew: I just got another (the second at this stage, but I've asked for them at every stage) extension on the Secret Science Alliance. It was sort of touch-and-go whether they would grant me the extension. I wasn't letting myself think about what I would do if they didn't grant me the extension. It was making me sort of sick.

Anyway, things should be a little less crazy/horrible here. Whew!

3:51 am - Hello my friends!
This is a lame-o collective 'I'm sorry" note to folks in general for being slack on e-mails/snail mails/phone calls/myspace/facebook/LJ comments and everything else. We've been in a super-amazing-maniac-work-crunch lately that isn't going to ease up for months. It's been pretty fun. We're doing good stuff, I think.

But it also means I am being a jerk and not keeping up with business and friends and all the rest. That is not cool, so I am sorry!

Everyone work hard to stay healthy in body and mind,

elo

3:08 am - Sketches!
I made a daily to-do list, with sketchbooking at the top. So I've been doing more of that. All these are older though- still trying to work through the current backlog.

1:48 am - Sketchin'
I've been trying to read more. What books would folks recommend. Not time-waster books, or books that are totally impossible that you tell people you are reading at parties to try and sound smart. In-between books.

Have you read any of Sarah Glidden's stuff. She's working on a comic called How To Understand Israel in 60 days or Less. She has a mini out of the first chapter. It's good. I recommend her work.

2:31 am - Howdy

Our friend Adam ([info]piece_of_pork) just spent a nice week with us. He left yesterday so I spent most of today being listless and reading manga. Adam, it was more fun when you were here!

Here is a picture of Adam and Drew and me and our pals David Mack and Kerry making a bonfire out of our old christmas trees.

Speaking of David Mack, he got a LJ that he's been posting nifty illos and comics on! He does a very good comic called Otto about an upside-down boy. (Featured in the Fluke 6 anthology, and The Flagpole.) Everybody should friend him! He's nice! He's [info]monkeyfingers!

Here are some more sketches and things. Possibly didactic. )

12:46 am - OVALTINE HOT
I did these teeny-weeny little pieces for the Mini Show at Abacot Gallery in LA. The opening is December 8th, and if you live in the area you should check it out! My friend Kate is in it and a bunch of other rad folks too I'm sure.

'Not Their Persimmons'

I am still very, very iffy on watercolor, and they took me too long to do because of it, but they were still fun! I feel terrible because for each fun project I say 'yes' to there are like three fun projects I can't do. But that's a good problem to have a guess.

1:04 am - Thank you for your ample tolerance

This sketchy comic is nearly a year old- I gave up on it halfway. It was too whiney too live. It falls under my 'don't be boring' taboo but I like some of the drawings okay so here it is.

Sketches! Some NSFW )

We didn't fret and fuss over our jack-lanterns this year so of course they came out pretty cute. Can you tell which is Drew's and which is mine? Drew made them into five pies!

9:28 pm - I'm gonna try posting more regularly!
Okay, I finished this project awhile ago. I was asked to do a piece for an art show associated with a performance of Hansel and Gretel the Metropolitan Opera is doing for their holiday season. I guess they have a little gallery space in the lobby or something? I was never real clear on it. But dudes, I jump at any excuse to do 3-D stuff. So here are some photos of the concept sketches and then the final piece... it's pretty sturdy, meant to be a working dollhouse for a little kid (a braver little kid than I was- I probably would have been afraid of it). It's cloth and painted bass wood.

A ton more photos! )

9:35 am - MOME 9
Hello hello!

I haven't posted in forever! How's everybody doing? Good? Good! This is just a short post to say MOME 9 is here if ya'll are interested- it's got some pretty good stuff in it especially some excellent Gabrielle Bell one pagers and the first half of a long Woodring story. My story is perhaps more subdued than usual but I continue to like it okay.

Here's the cover:

and here's a page from my story:

I'm still drawing and crafting natch- I'll post stuff up soon- I miss you, Livejournal... I miss you my LJ friends! (I AM A DORK.)

12:14 am - MOME NEWS

I guess the new issue of Mome is out? And I got to be on the cover which is rad, and there's an interview with me which is flattering but also embarrassing. There's some good stuff in it as usual, Al Columbia and Lewis Trondheim and a nice story by Jonathan Bennett who seems to be getting better and better each issue. Anyways, check it out of you want but not if you don't want!

11:24 pm - Giant Robot
Hey Dudes!

This is a way late post but I'm in another show at Giant Robot, the one in LA this time. It's an annual (?) group show of cartoonist-types called Panelists, and the list of amazing folks participating is so long I can't even begin it. The opening of the show was last week I think and a couple of my pieces already sold but if you want to shell out some of your hard-earned cash on a sketch or page of original art by yours truly, the opportunity remains. Check it out: http://www.gr2.net/artshow.php#

I wish so bad that I could have seen the show myself because it looks super fun. Maybe if you live in LA you can stop by.

11:30 am - Help me out!
Does anyone have any advice/recommendations on a sturdy, reliable inkjet printer that can handle printing onto (strathmore) Bristol board?

I do really tight thumbnails, and for big projects I often used to blow them up and print them out in cyan onto bristol and then ink over those, saving hours of my life. However, I was using my old school's massive, super expensive inkjet printer, and now that I don't have access to said printer, we were thinking of getting an inkjet ourselves. BUT it has to be a tough one that's able to print onto very thick papers and bristol etc. (And hopefully not like our laser printer, which only prints on thick paper with much grinding and nashing of printy teeth and often mangling of paper and smearing of ink and threats that it will break completely.) Also it would be swell if it was not giant and not terribly expensive (natch). Any advice?!?

3:17 am - I can't really describe how amazing this is.
I am a person who an awful lot of nice things have happened to. My life has been filled with some pretty awesome surprises. If I had to list them, the list would be very long, but the following thing would certainly be near the top:

This is a monster made by the incomparable Michele Chidester, ([info]drogochideseter) ( http://michelechidester.com ), who is probably the most fantastic crafter I've ever known, and is also supremely nice, as is exhibited by the fact that after making this amazing fellow she gave him to me and he is now hanging with me nightly on my futon.

He is based on a little watercolor I did awhile back.

Not only did she capture the original picture amazingly, but she made it 10X better by making his robes removable, revealing the horrors within!!!
