My build of the Voice of Saturn Sequencer.
All details there in the video, no sense in cutting and pasting it here.
Looking for suggestions on how to properly label this thing now.
Not willing to use rub on dry transfers, pain in the ass.
Have a punch labeler, but that's not gonna look very good.
Suggestions?

Easily one of the best science fiction writers I've ever run across.
For an easily digestible bit, I suggest Rogue Farm from the 'Live without a Net' short story compilation. That's what got me hooked, and got me to hunt more down.
Here's everything:
http://www.antipope.org/charlie/fic tion/index.html
The local library had a few of his titles. I read Glasshouse first, should have read Accelerando first. Oh well.
I could literally feel my brain grinding down on a regular basis, chewing up clock cycles, as I tried to digest the barrage of ideas and themes wrapped in a mutated crunchy shell of damn good writing.
Absolutely brilliant.
I'll be buying a lot of these for re-reads years hence.
If you like SF, you do yourself a disservice not to ingest some of Stross' work.

How many of you use LastFM, whether as an artist or as a listener?
If you've got an active music project, you've probably already got an automatically generated profile up on the site, by virtue of listeners having listened to one or more of your tracks. Go check.
You can edit your information, upload tracks with the usual stream/download controls and, best of all you get paid direct royalties with quarterly reports for what's been listened to. Beat that, Myspace.
As a listener, not only can you track and share what you listen to, but the site will create a radio stream based on what you listen to, one for stuff you already like, one for stuff you'd probably like. And it does a good job. It applies that same sort of 'youd probably like this' logic to meeting other users, whose profiles you can then pillage for more music, etc.
This all works from a process they call Scrobbling, which is basically the export of their lean little multiplatform program that pulls the new plays from your media player software (iTunes, etc) and adds it to your profile database on the site. http://www.last.fm/download/
Source code is available. How cool is that.
Been a user on LastFM for about a year now.
Very clever, highly recommended. =]

In case any of you are interested, there's a new Endif interview up at Dark Twin Cities:

This morning started as any other.

Meet my modular.
I call it [c]Rackwhore.
Rack is wood, handmade by Jen's dad.
Modules mounted to Vector rails I cut to size.
I hope to move it all to a server-style open frame milled aluminum strut rack.
Got a Vector cage waiting for that glorious day.
I wonder if Sandy's Electronics has a wedding registry...
Anyway. Modular.
Two formats.
Frac is bottom.
Euro is top.
Patch bay between.
Frac takes 15 +/- voltage power supply.
Euro takes 12 +/-.
Everything talks via 1/8 inch headphone jacks.
Some I ordered from Mouser, some I made.
All of them are color coded now using heatshrink tubing.
Except the sequencer and patch bay and Firepod. Those are 1/4.
Lots of converty deals on top of the rack. =P
The Blacets are from kits, which I used to teach myself basic building skills.
http://blacet.com/
That oscillator.
It is made of pure fat.
FAT I TELL YOU.
Blacet is highly recommended.
The headroom on 15v modules is magnificent.
You can definitely hear the difference.
I only use 12v for utility modules and for those things that you can only get in Euro.
Such as the two modules in the top left.
Harvestman makes them. Pure fewking genius.
http://www.analoguehaven.com/theharvest
Also highly recommended.
Poke around that site. If your gearlust is somehow not awakened, you are synth-impotent.
Malgorithm is a voltage controlled bit crusher. The thing labeled in russian is a direct clone of the filter from the very aggro sounding Soviet era Polivoks analogue synth, made in collaboration with the original designer and using the correct Russian IC's, not western equivalents.
I get all mopey when I think about the Tyme Sefari I cannot afford. =[
The clear-plexi modules are DIY, built from circuitboards and instructions;
- Small on left is tube vca/distortion from CGS/ken stone.
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs65_
- Larger on right is an ADSR envelope generator by Music from OuterSpace.
http://musicfromouterspace.com/analogsy
Many many more in the pipe;
Seriously. I have 17 boards waiting to be built out.
I just have to grow my building skills, which are definitely beginner level. =P Unless the instructions for wiring the controls and jacks are really detailed or easy, I seem to fail often. For now. Classes soon. Sick of not knowing for sure what to do.
Which brings us to my latest addition, the Voice of Saturn Sequencer.
They come prebuilt, as two levels of kit, or just as a board.
I had everything else already, so I just got the board. =]
http://www.curiousinventor.com/kits/voi
I used sliders instead of knobs.
Observe:
Can never have too many sequencers, no?
Anyway, I'm at the point of mounting the PCB and battery holder into the very roomy case, then wiring it all up to the panel. Note the very detailed panel wiring diagram at the link above! I have a chance of success! =]
So, I showed you mine, you show me yours!
=]
Ripped and CDDB subbed (you're welcome ;] ).

I finally let those idiots over in Conservatism goad me into getting myself banned from there.
Conservatives aren't exactly known for their tolerance of dissenting opinions, and I'm one opinionated invertebrate.
Apparently Heirtoruin was granted mod privileges after the last troll attack by forces unknown. While one of the more open minded of the Cons that hang out there (musician and scientist, yet conservative, go figure), I'd been attacking some of his favorite positions a lot lately. Guess I struck a nerve.
Oh well. I should be finishing these last few songs for Carbon anyway.
Maybe I'll check back in a week or so....

A few weeks back I scored big on a ton of tubes and gear;

"WASHINGTON - Pentagon officials firmly opposed Vice President Dick Cheney's proposal to strike Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps bases last summer by insisting that the administration make clear decisions about how far the United States would go in escalating the conflict with Iran, according to a former Bush administration official."
Any betting pools going on out there as to whether they hit Iran on the way out the door or not?

‘My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.’
Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons."

I finally put my Malfunctionator into a proper case last week, thought I'd share.

I'd originally built it into the box from an old Mercedes black box unit that my brother had given me to gut for, ironically, enclosures for projects. These proved too small for the Malf, so I just used the cardboard. GhettoMalf was born. No images, as it turns out, just checked, but if you caught my show in SF last month at the DNA, or just watched the webcast, it was used then.
Finally got around to putting it a proper enclosure. Bought a pre-made one for $15 from the local electronics supply store, Sandy's Electronics. Shallow with a slanted top. Just big enough for the pots and caps and battery. Had to move the battery off-board with a few leads to shoe-horn it in there. Next time I'll buy a deeper one.
I have to pull 4 screws and remove the bottom plate to change 9v batteries, and it'll be a pain to cram all that wiring back into the slim enclosure, but it fits into a pocket on my BDU's, so whatever. ^=^
I'd already done the layout on the ghetto cardboard enclosure, so I just duplicated it on the final.
Used an 18v hand drill and a variety of guage bits to put the holes into the face plate once it was laid out.
Left most vertical row of knobs, with the LED's, are modulation frequency.
Middle row is Oscillator Frequency.
Right is Cross Mod Amount.
Solo knob is Volume.
Switch is on/off.
Jack is, duh, Out. ;]

Simple little noisemaker / LFO source.
The process went reasonably smoothly, but I sure wish I had this little guide from Sparkfun to help speed things up:
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/presen t.php?p=Enclosure-Modification
Anyway, it works, it looks good, and it's a hell of a lot more durable.
I'm thinking of doing white decal lettering on it using model + train decals from a hobby store. They sell sheets of them for a few bucks. I believe they just rub onto the surface. Cut, lay out backward, place, rub.
Will post again when it's finished...

Hoping to get some release parties and gigs lined up to support the release of Carbon in July on Tympanik. Gigs are blacked out during August, but June, July and thereafter are a go.
Interested parties are encouraged to contact Rosie Rivets - rosierivets[at]sbcglobal[dot]net.
[Yay having a dedicated promo person @ the label!]
Regardless, if you're a promoter or DJ, it would be a good idea to get on the Tympanik promotional rolodex, no?

Friday we went to Brew Brothers in the Eldorado.
Met friends. Swilled beers. Watched the Spazzmatics:
http://www.thespazmatics.net/
Insanely awesome.
Almost got booted for pogoing.
Today we saw The Strangers at the theatre in downtown Sparks.
So incredibly bad. I *wanted* the protagonists to die.
Not just because it would end the movie, but because they were so appallingly stupid.
"Oh, gee, I'm being stalked by three masked freaks. I think I'll run around barefoot and do the stupidest things possible, like split up from my husband, who has the gun, and go running around the forest. No, wait, I'll crawl. Oops, we killed our friend, who's at least as dumb as us. "
So not recommended. =P

"The US military has awarded an $80 million contract to a prominent Saudi financier who has been indicted by the US Justice Department. The contract to supply jet fuel to American bases in Afghanistan was awarded to the Attock Refinery Ltd, a Pakistani-based refinery owned by Gaith Pharaon. Pharaon is wanted in connection with his alleged role at the failed Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), and the CenTrust savings and loan scandal, which cost US tax payers $1.7 billion."
Ironically, he was also an investor in Bush's failed energy venture, Arbusto Energy.
Go figure. As if the long standing ties to the Bin Laden family weren't enough already.
You don't just hand out multimillion dollar contracts to convicted felons, especially those with ties to Al-fucking-Quaeda.
How incompetent can this administration be?
Or is this corruption? Evidence of collusion?
