I read the news today, oh boy... [05/09/2008

All I have to say is, setting people's pants on fire doesn't seem very friendly.

Neither does keeping a crime victim's leg as evidence. Poor dude didn't have a leg to stand on, so to speak.

Also, the proper response, when told to get a job, is not to hit someone with a chair. Unless you want a job at the WWE, of course. Then it might be part of the interview process.

...and it would seem like I just experienced my first accidental poisoning. *grins*
A couple weeks ago, Rij, Rellie and I went to the nature trail near my house to pick wild fruit and make jam. We got a lot of blackberries, but I also grabbed some elderberries (which the others don't like, so they didn't do anything with them). Well, this morning I opened up my jar of home-made elderberry jam and spread two sandwiches with a thick layer of it. Tasted pretty good, except for the odd leaf hanging around in it, but that's to be expected in home-made jam.
But yeah... I guess there must've been a few berries in it that weren't elderberries after all, as about half an hour after eating it, I got a pretty bad headache, got dizzy and my muscles felt kinda weird. Thought it was just a cold, and went to bed, but shortly after, I got really sick. Throwing up and all (though mostly bile, so I guess my breakfast had already been largely digested).
So I got my mom to go buy some active charcoal, which tends to help when something doesn't quite agree with your body. Just took that, about 3 hours after I ate the stuff, so I guess it'll probably still work in getting at least part of whatever toxin got into my system. I'm still feeling kinda queasy, but not as sick as before, and I'm drinking plenty of water, so I guess I'll be alright. Hope so, anyways, as I've got guest list spots for Cyberia tomorrow, and I´d hate to be too sick to go.

[ mood | annoyed ]

Hmph. Right, to explain the title of this post: No, I'm not actually being pelted with soy beans or drowning in soy milk. Somewhat more complicated, but just as annoying.

I've had an almost constant stomach ache for the last four months - bad enough that I tend to have to lay down a few hours almost every day after dinner (and sometimes other meals), when it gets at its worst. My GP finally referred me to see a specialist last week, and I've been specialist-hunting the last few days. Finally found one with a waiting list of 2 weeks (instead of 2 months, like all other hospitals) today.

Anyway, this weekend, I was reading a supermarket magazine (Allerhande), and it had an article about soy allergy. Now, I had already self-diagnosed as having a mild soy allergy some years ago (meaning I have always tended to get sick after drinking soy milk or eating soy products, like soy yogurt or soy burgers), but the symptoms this article described showed a lot of similarity to what I've been experiencing these last few months. So I looked up soy allergy online, found out that it would also explain the weird eczema-like patches of itchy skin I've had pop up this last half year or so (yeah, yeah - TMI. My blog. I whine. Deal.), and decided that it wouldn't hurt to stop eating anything that contained soy (even though I'm not entirely sure that allergies do this kind of 'suddenly getting worse' thing).

But. Oh. Em. Gee. SOY IS EVERYWHERE. I have read more labels these past few days than I have the last few YEARS. I finally managed to find ONE kind of bread that has no soy in it. Even my mom's bake-your-own bread mix contains soy. Cookies contain soy. Cooking oil contains soy. Savory pies contain soy. CHOCOLATE contains soy. ALL CHOCOLATE. Argh. Margarine contains soy. Cornflakes contain soy. Breakfast has never been this difficult. WHY, world, WHY does everything (well, almost everything) contain soy? When did this happen? Was I not looking while a tiny Asian bean conquered the world and laughed at me???

Uhm. Yeah. Slash melodrama. But still, it's annoying. I don't see why they have to put this stuff in half of the food products known to man...

I do think it's helping, though. The avoiding soy, I mean. My tummy still hurts, but it seems to hurt less than it did last week. And I've only stopped eating soy last Monday, so if it is an allergy thing, I think my body would probably need some time to heal the damage already done. We'll see. I'll mention it to the specialist, see if he/she can get me tested or something. I kinda hope it IS an allergy - at least allergies are somewhat easily manageable, unlike some of the diseases my GP suggested it could be, like IBD or some auto-immune thing.

Still. Soy. The tiny, tiny evil bean king of the world. Somebody should do something about that.
Just sayin'.

August so far (aka the festival season) [18/08/2008

Soooo... wanna know what I did this month?

'Kay, so I'll start off with the first day of the month, which happened to be the first day of Castlefest.

Friday the 1st:
Went to Castlefest to volunteer at the Summer Darkness booth. Wore my stripey dress, stripey hairthingies that I made myself and my (also self-made) spidey choker. Got there bright and early, circumvented the line as I was supposed to meet Hadassa at the entrance to get my vendor wristband... hm, no Hadassa. Called her, they got stuck in traffic, but I could go and get my wristband from the guest desk myself. Cool. So, got that, plus a free bag with a Large mailorder catalog, which was a nice surprise. Went off to find the booth, when I got a call from Hadassa, to meet her at the vendors' parking lot and help carry some of the stuff. Went there, picked up one of the boxes, and nearly dislocated my shoulder getting it to the booth... yes, I can be stubborn :P. Started setting up the booth, and found out the hard way that there was a stinging nettle in there. Ouch. Anyways, Hadassa and my co-worker for the day (Thomas, who turned out to be a classmate of Rellie's) showed up, too, and we set up the booth. Hadassa had packed many yummy snacks, and the rest of the day was spent happily conversing with those interested in the festival, snacking, and hanging out with Martin (who'd tagged along with friends who own a booth) in the bit of spare time I got. Also saw Do and Myrthe, but they were sorta busy with Omnia stuff (promotion and such). Oh, and got my Dad some fudge for his birthday!

August the 2nd:
As my wristband was valid the entire weekend, I decided to go to Castlefest this day as well, to see the burning of the wickerman. Of course, since it was my Dad's birthday, we first had a bit of a celebration at home. Gave him the fudge and a promise of taking him to see the new James Bond movie when it's out. My sis and Samir got him a Harry Potter DVD, and my mom got him some CDs. After the cake and drinks, Rens & Samir went back home, and I got into my pink cyberfairy outfit that Rellie and I made, and went off to the Fest. Hung out with Martin for most of the day, tried to find Cynthia (turned out she went on the Sunday), met Vera, did some shopping (bought some really yummy absinthe candy, of which I gave one piece to the wickerman :)), gave Sven a belated b-day present (an old Dr Who tie-in book that I found at the used book store), and generally had fun. Right before the Omnia show that would precede the wickerman fire sacrifice, we met up with Kimmie, who called up Joren to ask if I could get a ride home with them. I could. Cool. Had some time left to go get a huge apple beignet (a kind of donut), then went off to the stage. When the Omnia show began, we were pretty far in front, but then the dancers started doing their thing and, ehm, I got DANCED ON, which wasn't at all pleasant. Martin didn't want to move to another spot, but I'd seen Do and Myrthe (and some dude called Daan) standing off to the side, so I went and stood with them. Gave Myrthe some earrings that I made, 'cause she'd given me her pretty sparkly pink bracelet that I liked at Do's b-day party, and I wanted to do something back. Had fun singing along with Omnia, and then the wickerman fire ceremony started. Myrthe had the awesome idea of climbing onto the big bass speaker, which gave us pretty much a perfect view. Was very pretty. And weird. I SWEAR to whatever god you prefer, that when the smoke of the sacrifices went up, it briefly formed a sunwheel shape. Hm. Sacrifice accepted, I guess. Got dragged off by Kimmie, who didn't want to miss Joren, waited for him a while, then got a ride home.

The next few days were sort of uneventful, up until Tuesday night, when I returned home from cleaning my grandma's house with a massively achy throat. I hoped it was just some irritation from breathing in fumes of cleaning agents, but by the next morning, I was feeling pretty sick. Yay flu. As Wednesday was supposed to be my first day of Summer Darkness, with the big Within Temptation concert, I wasn't very happy. If it hadn't been for the fact that I had to work the guest desk at the official opening the next day, I would've gone anyway, but instead I opted to stay in bed and try to get better.

Which didn't exactly work, but I was well enough to work, at least.

Thursday the 7th:
The first day of my 2nd year as a Summer Darkness volunteer, yay! Agonized over my outfit for far too long (decided on a Victorian theme, and a somewhat complex braid), got to Utrecht in the nick of time, but was held up at the caravan/main guest desk for a while (went there to get my shirt, but had to wait for some Cyberia tickets that all volunteers got as a thank-you-surprise-thingy), so I was about 5 mins late. Hadassa greeted me with a 'hey, you were supposed to work here, right?', so I instantly went into 'omg she must be mad I'm late' apologetic mode, but she followed it up with a 'I think I can manage on my own, just go enjoy the festival'. Whoa. Surprise! That pretty much meant I only had to work 4 hours this year! Coolness. So I went to the opening, which was kinda interesting, and then to the book reading by Patrick McGrath, which was really cool (gotta get Trauma, the book he read from, one of these days). Afterwards, I went off to the V&D dept. store to go get a bite to eat and to buy some new socks, as the ones I was wearing got soaked by the rain. Saw some really cool postcards at the Diddl store along the way, so I got a few of those (my fave is the one that says 'There's always a light at the end of the tunnel. Just pray it's not a train.'). On my way back, I met up with some volunteers I knew from the year before, and together, we went to see Echo and the Bunnymen. Met even more fellow volunteers (including Thomas) over there, had some fun watching the concert (singer dude: 'I love being in Amsterdam. Even though this isn't Amsterdam, but...wherever.'), then went home.

Friday the 8th:
Felt kinda bad, still, but put on my old Raven dress and hopped on the train just in time to get to the Persephone concert at the Dom church. Managed to find a pretty good seat (okay, okay, I just squeezed myself in between a row of people on a bench somewhat in front). Sonia came walking up to the stage holding a bunch of roses, which she passed out to audience members. I got a rose, yay! The performance was really great, she pretty much acted out the lyrics to the songs, which I loved! And she's pretty. :) I bought the promo version of the CD for just 7 euros (the regular version, with booklet and poster, was 17. Didn't have that much.). After the show, I decided to explore the market a bit, but I fled back into the church to escape the cold. Told some people the myth of Persephone, as they were wondering what that word meant. One of them said she wasn't into myths. How can you not be into myths?? They're pretty stories that explain life, what's not to love? Anyways, after I was done explaining Persephone, the Irfan concert started. Pretty good as well. Too bad I had to sneeze halfway through a song - that was a bit embarrassing. After Irfan, I was almost bowled over by Do jump-hugging me, followed by Myrthe. Tagged along with them to the Boothill Saloon, where we found a dude that knew Myrthe (and had her phone number *grins*), though she didn't remember knowing him. Shall henceforth refer to him as New Dude, as I forgot his name. The four of us decided to walk on back to the Dom square, to grab ab bite to eat and to go see the fire show. Got some fries, talked a bit, then went towards the stage to go see the show. We'd found a place right in front, when some weird guy in a motorized chair/cart thing told me to move over, 'so he could look at me better'. Uhm. Dumbfounded. Didn't quite know what to do... luckily, Myrthe saved me, by sweetly telling the guy that she preferred for me to stay with her and the others. He told her that she could come over, too, but she politely refused, whereupon he decided that we were arrogant. Whatever. The fire show was pretty cool, but I was kinda bummed that it was just Kaos, without Medusa. I mean, I like Kaos, they're good, but half-naked pretty girl playing with fire... well, it adds something, let's just put it that way. Anyways, after the fire show, Do, Myrthe and New Dude walked me to the train station. Myrthe was meowing and being all kittenish, so I told her I'd make her a kitty choker with a bell on it, which I did after I got home.

Saturday the 10th:
I wanted to do the Gothic Walk on Saturday, but due to a wardrobe emergency (I wanted to wear my PVC corset, but when I'd put it on, I found out that some of the boning got bent all out of shape, so I had to go find a shirt to wear with my other corset... ah well, at least my cameo socks matched my cameo mask!), I was late, and they'd already left. Boo. I decided to go check out the Catherijneconvent Christian museum, which was kinda interesting. Had to explain to the guard that an interest in the darkly romantic does not mean that I worship Satan. Hm. After that, ran off to the Leeuwenbergh church to see Faun, only to find that it'd sold out, and I wasn't getting in with my crew wristband, either. Ah well, full is full, right? Not according to some annoying people, who decided to argue with organization. And got pissed at me for siding with the orga. Well, y'know, they're nice people, I doubt they're just saying it's full in order to piss you off. Deal. Went back to the Dom square market, where I ran into Hans, Jojo & Kaas. Tagged along with them on an hour-long quest for coffee, and then to the snackbar for dinner. After dinner, I decided to go to Clan of Xymox with them, even though that'd cause me to miss part of Das Ich. Concerts are just more fun when you're with a group. Clan of Xymox was pretty cool, though I didn't feel very good at all... overheating, I suppose, because it went away when I took off my hat. Left before the encore to go see Das Ich @ De Helling. A bit of a bottleneck had formed around the doors to the concert hall, so unfortunately I was still standing on my tiptoes trying to catch a glance while they played one of my fave songs (Macht), but after that, we managed to find a good spot, and I danced my little heart out. Stayed at De Helling to see Hocico, which was pretty cool. After that, had a lengthy discussion on where to go next, then agreed to go check out Vive la Fete before going to the Medusa party. Shouldn't have done that. Vive la Fete sucked, and when Johan (other volunteer) and me got to Medusa, I was almost knocked over in the hallways by Myrthe (why do they keep doing that? :P), who told me I'd just missed the torture show. DAMMIT. Anyways, still had some fun, danced a bit, had some nummy foods, and managed to catch the absolute latest train home.

Sunday the 11th:
My only work day! Market info stand this time. Got there 5 mins late (again!), and spent the next four hours trying to keep the stall from flying off (windy!), and making pretty festival pins. Cool. After that, met up with Do, Myrthe and their friends for a bit, was photographed by some woman from MTV, then ran off to see Ordo Rosarius Equilibrium. Met Tim there, who was suitably impressed by my pink blinky heart Teequalizer shirt. ORE had a bondage show on stage, which was interesting, but not really that sexy. After the show, I went back to the Dom square and met up with Do, Myrthe and New Dude again. Had a bite to eat while New Dude told ghost stories. Somehow, we decided to go for a walk in a graveyard. Do warned me that I might miss Welle:Erdball, but I still had 45 minutes, and I like graveyards, so I tagged along. The walk was kinda nice, there were really yummy blackberries growing in the graveyard, I found out that Myrthe gets really pissed if you swear where the dead people can hear it :P, and, ehm, we got lost. The others didn't mind so much, as they were busy reading all the (admittedly interesting) gravestones, but I did sort of want to see Welle:Erdball... We made our way out, cycled back (me getting a ride from New Dude, whose back tire was falling apart, eep), and I still got to see half the concert, so that was cool. And I found Hans, who had found a pretty good spot to stand in, which came in handy :P. Had a lot of fun dancing and jumping around, and grabbed one of the paper airplanes that was thrown into the crowd (it, uhm, hit Hans, bounced off him, and then I picked it up. He didn't want it. Hm. Well, MINE! :)). Danced some more after the concert, when the DJs were playing, then hugged everyone I knew there (loads!) and went home.

Next week was normal. Saw a psych person on Monday for the new diagnosis thingy, cleaned my grandma's house on Thursday, and sort of procrastinated on my thesis for the rest of the week. Which I'm still doing. First chapter needs to be done tomorrow. Hm... let's start.

Should be working on my thesis right now, but all the subtitling/AVT/translation science stuff is getting boring and making my head hurt. Blah - I wish I had like a thesis-writing robot, so that I only needed to come up with ideas, and not go into all the boring theory and do all this WRITING. Writing is for songs and poems and stories! Hm.

Anyways, Things. Things On My Mind. Like my Halloween party. Three months to go, about time to start planning. Rellie and I might join forces this year. I was thinking of doing a Victorian seance-like thing this time, but maybe that's a bit too dark... or maybe I could do two parts, like pumpkin carving and movies and such in the daytime and creepy seance stuff at night. And no, I don't believe in ghosts, but when I host a seance, there WILL be creepy things happening. Promise. So who's interested in attending? Obviously, I don't have a date set for it yet, but an indication of who'd like to be there might help my planning.

Also, the music meme (look a few posts back). There's still quite a few unguessed songs. I'll give people until tomorrow afternoon to have another try if they want to, and then I'll reveal the ones that haven't been guessed.

That's all for now... until I get boredead (=bored to death) again.

I'm SO living up to my hair color... My mom had asked me to do some grocery shopping, and gave me her debit card. Which I unthinkingly thrust into a pocket that also held 20 mini neodymium magnets (well, actually 19 magnets and 4 fragments of the 20th). Which I only realized when I tried to use the card at the checkout, to no avail (obviously). I had to call in the cavalry, in the shape of my dad, to get my groceries paid.

Snagged from [info]moriestiel, but I changed it a bit.

Rules:
-Put your playlist on shuffle
-Take the first lines from the first 30 songs (2nd line if the title is in the 1st)
-Let your friends guess the songs

Except I don't have a playlist on my laptop, so I just randomly picked songs I like to listen to. Same thing, pretty much, right?

It's really quite incredible, how many lotteries I managed to win without ever having entered any of them. I must be enormously lucky! :D

Though I supppose the IRS must have heard of my new windfall, because they want me to enter my details on a tax form. Gee, this whole winning the lottery thing isn't that great after all... now countries an ocean away get to tax me! D:

Maybe if I enlarged my boobs a few sizes by taking those new, 100% effective guaranteed!!! all-natural supplements, I could make those meanie tax-men change their minds?

I should get a PayPal account, to pay the supplements with. Oh, wait, I must already have one, since the friendly PayPal people have taken the time to inform me that somebody tried to hack it! Omgz, I should totally log in on this page they kindly sent me a link to, and see if everything's still all right with my account. If only I could remember the password...

As some of you may have noticed (by, ahem, stealing my props and inventing new tricks with them... never trust a mathematician :P), I'm currently quite into magic. No, not the burning incense and candles mumbo-jumbo stuff that is generally misspelled with an extra k in it, just the good old-fashioned sleight-of-hand (or mind) trickery. And for the first time, I'm not even that bothered by the fact that some of my friends pick this stuff up faster than me - I LIKE this hobby, dammit, and I'm not gonna let my insecure streak ruin this like it did with so many previous hobbies (I tend to give up when others are better at things. Bad habit.). I'll just keep on practicing and practicing some more until I AM the best at it.

Anyways, there's a magic convention in London this November that I really want to go to, but my dilemma is this: I can either buy a ticket for the entire thing (one evening, two full days), or a day ticket. Pros of doing the entire con thing are that I'll get to see all the lectures and performances, and I won't feel like I missed anything. Con (as in, against, not as in convention... semantics, semantics) would be that I can't really afford it - it'd be 110 euros for the ticket, plus journey and hotel costs. Pros of the one-day thing are that it's more affordable (still 70 euros for the ticket, plus other costs, but one day would probably also mean lower hotel costs), and that I'd still be able to go on the Sunday, which is when the vendors are there. C... ehm, against, is the 'might miss something good' problem.

So, whaddaya think? Should I do the whole con, or one day? Or not go at all, since I'm only a lowly beginner who might get made fun of anyways? Thoughts, plz...

One: I've totally had it with health care providers and their know-it-all attitude. Of course, if they know more than me, I'll happily listen, but if in the span of 2 hours you get told by your GP that you 'just shouldn't pay attention' to an annoying, itchy, ugly rash on your torso 'because these things happen, and it's not that bad' (yeah, these things happen, that's why I want you to give me something to make them un-happen, because itchy blotchy skin makes me unhappy), and then by the pharmacy tech that it's 'very bad for the body, yes?' to use BC pills to skip or postpone a period (I do research this stuff before I do it, y'know, and it IS actually safe enough), it starts to get annoying. I live in this body, do you think I am completely unaware and uninformed about it? Geesh.

I was looking up the prices on Hans Klok tickets just now (yeah, so sue me, I can't resist the big Vegas show coming to my home town), and what do I see on the ticket site but a show by Derek Ogilvie. Tickets selling for 32,50 euros each. Come on folks, shell out your money to get messages from your dead loved ones... except, y'know, NOT. That's what I call cashing in on other people's grief. I hate that. I HATE the fake medium thing, and especially the part where people have to pay lots of money for fucking FALSE HOPE.

If the guy was just doing the telepathy thing, well, sure. If you're going to buy into what is in essence some basic cold reading, and you want to pay to witness the pseudo-supernatural, by all means do so. It can be good entertainment when done properly. It's just that when you start playing with people's grief, when you let people who desperately want that person they loved back in their lives PAY you to pretend you're able to talk to the dead... that crosses a line for me, really. That's unethical. And that just fucking sucks.

TECHNOLOGY
Q. What is your wallpaper on your computer?
On the laptop I'm working on, it's the Torchwood logo on a rusty brown background. On my desktop computer (that I hardly use anymore) it's Mr Spock.

Q. How many televisions you have in your house?
One in the living room, one that is yet to be installed in my room.

BIOLOGY
Q. Are you right-handed or left-handed?
Right-handed.

Q. Have you ever had anything removed from your body?
Yup, my tonsils.

Q. What is the last heavy item you lifted?
My laptop (does that qualify as heavy? Otherwise it's the vacuum cleaner.)

Q. Have you ever been knocked out?
Nopes, though I've come close to fainting a few times (but not due to being hit).

BULLSHITOLOGY
Q. If it were possible, would you want to know the day you were going to die?
Neh, I'd like to keep my illusion of immortality :P

Q. If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
Uhm...dunno. I kinda like my name the way it is.

Q. What color do you think looks best on you?
Hot pink :P (but seriously, I dunno... I like a lot of colors).

Q. Have you ever swallowed a non-food item?
Are vitamins and medicine considered non-food? Otherwise, not as far as I can remember.

DAREOLOGY
Q. Would you kiss a member of the same sex for $100?
If she's hot, I don't need payment, kthnxbye. If she's not hot, I'm not gonna kiss her. No, not for teh moniez either. I'm not a whore, yanno.

Q. Would you allow one of your little fingers to be cut off for $200,000?
Add another zero to the end of that figure and I might think about it.

Q. Would you never blog again for $50,000?
Dunno, I'd probably get bored.

Q. Would you drink an entire bottle of hot sauce for $1000?
Uhm, no. I'd puke before I'd finish it, anyways, so I'd not get the money AND I'd be humiliated.

Q. Would you, without fear of punishment, take a human life for $1,000,000?
I'd only take a life out of mercy (dying/terminally or chronically ill/infant with nobody to care for it properly). Killing someone for whom life would be better than death is cruel. Money doesn't change that.

Q: What is in your left pocket?
I no can has pockets :(

Q: Is Napoleon Dynamite actually a good movie?
Dunno, never seen it. The title sounds kinda dumb, though. Then again, so does Kentucky Fried Movie, which is actually cool. Hm... I'll have to look it up. *looks up* Well, I still dunno. It seems like too many stories in one movie that's trying very hard to be funny. Hm.

Q: Do you have hardwood or carpet in your house?
Carpet.

Q: Do you sit or stand in the shower?
Stand, duh. Can't wash yourself sitting down.

Q: How many pairs of flip flops do you own?
None.

LASTOLOGY
Q: Last person who texted you?
*goes to get phone* That would be [info]myarra.

Q: Last person who called you?
Also [info]myarra.

Q: Person you hugged?
My dad.

FAVORITOLOGY

Dunno, but I like even numbers better than odd ones (omgz, I discriminate against odd numbers :()

Q: Season?
Autumn.

Q: Color?
Anything bright, plus black.

CURRENTOLOGY
Q: Missing someone?
My mom's in Istanbul for a literature festival, so I kinda miss her.

Q: Mood?
Kinda tired (is tired a mood? LJ says so), otherwise neutral.

Q: Listening to?
The sound of my fingers typing.

Q: Watching?
Nothing but my laptop screen :P

Q: Worrying about?
Whether this cold is gonna get worse or better (don't want to have the flu when [info]myarra and me go to London next week!)

Q: Wearing?
Black and white skirt with black/green floral print (dumbest skirt ever: it stained itself when I washed it... it's pretty though) and my Omnia 'The Raven' girlie. Otherwise, my slippers, and underwear (duh).

RANDOMOLOGY

1) There's a helicopter circling over my neighborhood. Has been doing so for the last 45 minutes. I wonder what it wants.

2) Not going to the Tim Burton interview/signing thingy after all. Went to get tickets yesterday, but the rabid fans that had apparently been there all day got all of them before we even got there. The festival guy said that if we wanted to come to the signing, we'd have to be there at least 3 hrs in advance. Now I love Tim Burton, but I also have this thing called a LIFE. Y'know, thesis to write, costume to sew, things to do other than standing in line for hours. So, well, too bad, I suppose.

3) There's a dead bird on my way home from the subway that's been lying there for at least a week now, and hasn't changed in appearance at all. Why is nobody eating it?

4) My mom turned 60 today. I'm gonna bake her a cake later. Now just to figure out what kind of cake.

5) I can do a card trick now. Yay. I'll be a magician yet!

Thesis woes [29/03/2008

So... I have to write my master's thesis for my MA in ICT and Translation (which is basically just a broad translation master's program, which also teaches you to use translation software). Problem is, I've been trying to think of a subject for the past few months, but all my ideas either get shot down by my prof, or they turn out to be unworkable. And I REALLY need a subject now... one that'll work and all... and I'm REALLY out of ideas.

So, in a bit of a desperate move, I'm throwing it out there - does anybody reading this happen to have an idea I can work with? Preferably something to do with subtitling, as that's where my experience lies, but anything to do with translation that I can in some way stick an ICT aspect on (either to do with software or just using it, like subtitling does) would be a great help. The more ideas I have to work with, the better my chance of actually finding one that may work.

'Course, afaik, nobody that reads this is actually involved in translation or anything, so this may just be a long shot... but it can't hurt to try, really.

Whee, I are good student! [28/03/2008

...In other words, I FINALLY got my Terminology project (the one on larp terminology) back, and I got an 8 (known in other grading systems as '80 %') on it, so I'm quite pleased with myself. Though I will have to have some words with that teacher, if he notes that I left the 'term' prop unexplained (uhm, no, that's actually just a pretty common English word...).

Anyways, if anyone wants to see the thing (I know some of you guys were interested), just leave a comment - if it's only one or two of you, I'll email it, otherwise I'll see about putting it online somewhere. Warning, though; it is understandable to people that haven't taken a course in terminology, but it does take some figuring out the system, if you're not used to it.
