09:48 am - Big gay dream!
Just had a weird but pretty cool (ie vaguely coherent) dream. It was about this strange voice(over) that visits a bunch of people who're about to die and shows them the pattern of their lives. In the dream, this all started as something I was watching on a new telly in our front room, and I came in part-way through. It does sound like the sort of made-with-mini-dv random thing you'd see on a Sunday evening or some such.

Anyway, there was this collection of people who were going to die in this one particular nightclub. One was a bloke who'd gone into the loo to do his hair. There was a lad waiting to stab him over some dispute when he went back into the club (I don't know why he couldn't alter his fate by climbing out of the toilet window. He just couldn't.) He was looking back on a time when he was in the army and his dad found him with a man in the back garden, and did his best to cope with it (badly.) The bloke was quite pissed off at being told he was about to die! Then there was this woman whose old friend was a singer & compere in the club, and was remembering the time when she herself was an up and coming star and her friend was a backing singer and dancer. One cringe-making night decades ago, her friend fell down the stairs behind her on live TV, and wrecked her confidence and TV career. She had presumably come to visit her old friend at the nightclub, only to find she was about to die. Oops. The final individual was a woman who had always been able to see her life outside of time. She was re-living a memory of a girl she'd been in love with as a child, and the way their mock-teasing play* excluded everything else. She had found a way to edit out some of the 'loops' that occured in her life's timeline, so that she could hurry up and spend more time with that one memory. The weird voice asked didn't she mind that it would shorten her life!? She said meh, she'd already seen her entire life in boring detail anyway, and was quite looking forward to dying and spending her time with one perfect bit of it.

I know this was probably just a series of semi-related images and scenes that my brain clumped together into a story while I was waking, but it was still very entertaining ;D

*it looked like a lot of squealing and hair-pulling to me, but she said it was her best ever memory so who am I to argue with my, er, brain?

02:21 am - Why I love the Bruce-Partington Plans
A fundraising broadcast by the "Watson Needs Hugs" campaign
He sprang up and shook me by the hand.
"I knew you would not shrink at the last," said he, and for a moment I saw something in his eyes which was nearer to tenderness than I had ever seen.

(God, Watson really needs a hug.)

Cheap laughs, as supplied by filthy minds!
There is an excellent archway down yonder in case a too zealous policeman should intrude. Give me a hand, Watson, and I'll do the same for you.

Shining Mycroft Moments
it was necessary for me, as Mycroft Holmes absolutely and indignantly declined to climb the railings, to pass in and open the hall door.

Holmes and his subtle (hah!) methods of bling-based communication
I learned incidentally that my friend spent a day at Windsor, whence he returned with a remarkably fine emerald tie-pin. When I asked him if he had bought it, he answered that it was a present from a certain gracious lady in whose interests he had once been fortunate enough to carry out a small commission.

(I'd love to be a fly on the wall when the Queen asked Holmes if he was really a woman-hater. I'm not sure whether the tie pin means he supplied a good answer, or a really bad one. Depends where she stuck the pin, I suppose.)

Holmes's use of Blinguistics can also be observed in A Case of Identity:
He held out his snuffbox of old gold, with a great amethyst in the centre of the lid. Its splendour was in such contrast to his homely ways and simple life that I could not help commenting upon it.

"Ah," said he, "I forgot that I had not seen you for some weeks. It is a little souvenir from the King of Bohemia in return for my assistance in the case of the Irene Adler papers."

"And the ring?" I asked, glancing at a remarkable brilliant which sparkled upon his finger.

"It was from the reigning family of Holland, though the matter in which I served them was of such delicacy that I cannot confide it even to you, who have been good enough to chronicle one or two of my little problems."

Ah, Holmes, the king of subtlety ;) Even way back in A Study in Scarlet, Holmes was initiating conversations via the cunning method of Leaving Crap Around. He seems to have refined this method over time, as later attempts feature noticeably shiny blingy things rather than defaced newspapers.

02:11 pm - Farewell Haldane...and weather
[info]k_haldane and family left the South West today *sniff* but before they vanished we managed to visit Fosforon, Spaceworld, and Saurian Major...aka Oldbury Power Station ;) The visitor centre has been closed for some time, but the nature trail around the station is a mere two barbed wire fences of death away from an alien world. ;)

In the course of their UK visit we also saw Horizon (Clearwell Caves), some bits of the Forest of Dean, and a collection of Torchwood locations. The weather was mostly dry and pleasant ... which is good, as it's now tipping it down with rain again!

It was so lovely to have Haldane and co. as my neighbours for a week. Strange to think that they will soon be far away again!

06:03 pm - Lonely, my arse
A silly cartoon of Holmes in LION. It has long amused me that the introduction to the tale starts with Holmes's lonely watson-less retirement ... then quickly becomes full of bathing lads, ex-rowers, hot young science masters, etc. Get over here, Watson! We have mysteries and naked rockpool bathing, and if you're not quick I'm going to let Stackhurst show me his stroke.

The lines are from The Adventure of the Lion's Mane. Even the bulging (it was Stackhurst's pocket doing the bulging, in case you were wondering.)

12:12 am - Earwormed :)
Got to play with the marvellous [info]k_haldane and family again today, and visited the suspension bridge ... and I totally failed to get us to the SS Great Britain in time >.< I'm really not good with trips where I don't obsessively plan and time each part, and that generally only works with 1-2 people. Still, twas great to be with them, and discuss fannish things, and ... I am now earwormed with a mistranslated lyrics song because I was foolish enough to google it ;)

03:12 pm - There was a Haldane!
Phew, so glad to get through the scheduling woe and happily meet up with H and family. They're ace, and gave me a bowl that is perfectly designed for eating curry at the computer ... which is what I'm doing now ;)

I also may have pimped Portal a bit. *cough*

Well, come on. It *is* Portal ;D

05:28 pm - But where are we going to park all the airships, eh?
Engineer's Ball in New Babbage.

Holmes and Watson have their glad rags ready. I can't help thinking that someone will fall into a canal before that night is out.

12:00 am - New Shiny Light
Well, I have finally fitted new tyre to new front wheel, and attached it all to not-new bike along with NEW SHINY LIGHT. I have a brand new B&M Lumotec IQ Fly, which has the same optics as my Ixon but with dynamo-power-y goodness. My reaction to the combination of shiny light and dyno hub is pretty much 'why the hell didn't I do this before??', but to be fair I had no reason to replace a perfectly good wheel just to have porny dynamo goodness. Still, it's one of those lovely 'it just works' solutions. The only downside is that the standlight does nothing for the crap side-visibility of the Ixon/Fly, but my high vis sidewalls should help with that. As with the Ixon, the Fly is bright enough for unlit roads and paths, and throws a nice even light. Shiny!

09:01 pm - Yet more crack: A Merlock for Elina & Elena!
Since it appears to be open season on crack in Holmes fandom at the moment... ;) For [info]elina_elsu and [info]elena_c, I present

hastily-drawn crackpic of a merman nature )

Note on the fannish origins of Merlock crack: This is a bit of local crack that began with [info]elina_elsu drawing hilarious merman!Sherlock, followed by [info]elena_c ficcing it in worldbuilding-tastic fashion. Then Elina made a Merlock av, and the joyful crack circle was complete :))
Current Mood: horribly mer-embarassed
Current Music: the sound of mer-shame

11:43 pm - SH22 Drawing o' crack
When looking for Steampunky things for our New Babbage gallery, I ended up using two SH22 pics. Based on this, I decided that SH22 and Babbage were probably meant to be, and therefore present a pic based on a sketch I drew on the loo SH22: Babbageificated!

Pissed-off aviatrix and robotic hugs below! )

08:52 pm - Tentacle!Holmes drawing (yes, I did say tentacle) ;)
As you may have noticed, I have been hiding from posting, though I have in fact been building and drawing various thingies. I have spent a few days indulging in Second Life work and play with [info]elina_elsu, [info]harriet_kaarre and [info]katharos_drache, and drawing the streets of our new home in New Babbage [youtube].  I may post some of the arty things later on.

Yesterday I helped Elina make a tentacle!Holmes av (to match [info]harriet_kaarre 's amazing comic strip and gorgeous work-in-progress), and made a clockwork!Watson for myself :)  As we lounged around Baker Street, we decided to draw a SL picture each. I drew tentacle!Holmes, based on our discussion of how he might keep his tentacley appendages moist and healthy . Yes, it's a crack!pic, but Holmes and tentacles do go together well. Very handy for experiments, innit. ;) Warning: Contains tentacles and horrible abuse of grungey textures.

See also the lj of [info]elina_elsu, who is simultaneously posting her own pic :D

LARGE pic, crack and tentacles below the cut )

03:19 pm - My Mum is Cheesoid
Mum gave me a lift to the blood donor place today, and as we got into the car we noticed an awful smell. On my return, I got down on my knees to peer under the front seat where I found a huge pack of rancid cheddar cheese. Poor Mum. She already has to put up with my constant Cheesoid quotes. This one will take a while to wear off. ;)

"But petril goes in car."
Current Mood: nauseated yet amused

12:19 am - Gardenw00t
I may have mentioned this, but our garden is finally producing food in useable quantities. We have load of courgettes, scrummy runner beans, and some tomatoes that are growing nicely. Oh, and spuds! :) I am very lazy about gardening, but it's been nicely rainy, and my nephews and niece have been acting as watering and picking minions.

Yum!

Yes, it's after midnight and an odd time to be thinking about the garden, but, well ... food!
