4:27 am - Save the Critical Mass/Reclaim The Streets bike sound system!
|
Help save the SF Bay Area Critical Mass/Reclaim The Streets bike soundsystem by donating to cover the costs of fighting the two remaining court cases.
Donate to the Bike Soundsystem Legal Fund
I'm currently facing two court cases in San Francisco for being ticketed while riding the bike soundsystem. Both cases share the same charge of California Vehicle Code section 27007 (which has to do with vehicles with amplified sound). The first ticket was received when I was pulled over by the CHP at the May 2005 SF Critical Mass. The second ticket was from the September 2005 SF Critical Mass ride when I was pulled over by the SFPD. In July 2005, I was also arrested while riding the bike soundsystem at the G8 protest in San Francisco. My bike, soundsystem trailer and iPod were all confiscated and it took about a month and a half to get them out (on the day of the August 2005 SF Critical Mass). The charge from the G8 protest was eventually dismissed, but only because the arresting cop was too stupid to write a valid ticket.
In California Vehicle Code section 27007, it states that "this section does not apply to the sound systems of vehicles used for advertising, or in parades, political or other special events". The California Vehicle Code also defines "vehicles" narrowly to not include human-powered vehicles. Some of the sections regarding traffic laws do apply to bicycles but those sections that do apply to bicycles are specifically listed and 27007 is not one of them.
I will be appearing in court today(10/28) for the ticket from last month's ride. My next trial is set for November 10th, 2005 for the first ticket from May 2005. The amount of fine for each case if I lose will be $154.96, so I'm facing about $310 in total fines. I was able to get some donations at the end of the October ride at the screening of the NYC CM documentary, "Still We Ride". Any amount you can give will help. Thanks!

6:57 pm - rock til you drop
|
|
It's a funny feeling realizing that you were at what was essentially a true metal concert the night before, and an Iron Maiden show at that, that fucking went off, and that you were in the band playing rock star to fanatical metalheads and pseudo-metalheads. All the elements were there: trashy metal vixens, actual metalheads, smoke machine, fancy lighting, fancy video projection, Eddie on stilts, devils on stage, mosh pit, stage diving, crowd surfing, backstage, double encores, maiden karaoke...etc. About a minute into our first song, we were bringing so much rock that we blew the fuse out. It felt like I was in Spinal Tap for a moment. Actually, I felt like that the whole time.

1:56 am - Sun 8/22 Screening of Naomi Klein's "The Take"
|
Sunday August 22nd, 8pm 1-800-GUN-NUMB (West Berkeley location. Call on day of event.)
Special screening of "The Take", a new feature length documentary by Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein, the author of No Logo. Various entertaining short films will precede the feature movie. Vegan snacks! Music!
The Take
In the wake of Argentina’s spectacular economic collapse in 2001, Latin America’s most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act —the take —has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.
Director/producer Avi Lewis (Counterspin) and writer/producer and renowned author Naomi Klein (No Logo) take viewers inside the lives of ordinary visionaries, as they reclaim their work, their dignity and their democracy

Just got back from Mutant Fest. It was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had for a number of reasons. Even though I was only there for about 5 days or so, it feels like I had been gone for a year. And there's a reason it's called Mutant fest. I highly recommend it for those of you who missed out.
