So now you suckas better bow down! [Sep. 29th, 2008|08:09 pm]

Your result for The Who Would You Be in 1400 AD Test...

The Lord

You scored 32% Cardinal, 54% Monk, 35% Lady, and 51% Knight!

You are of the intellectual breed and yet you are also very interested in war. You are of the aristocracy and head the cavalry a safe distance from the carnage of the front lines. You believe in defeating your enemy with not only might, but also wit.

You scored high as both the Monk and the Knight. You can try again to get a more precise description of either the Monk or the Knight, or you can be happy that you're an individual.

Wow. 13 weeks. Long time, no talk. [May. 28th, 2008|08:52 pm]
Moved in with the girlfriend.

Still a bit injured.

Life is rather grand.

And yes, I do have other thoughts.

Last five books read have been:

Among the Thugs

The Pirate Republic

The Year of Living Biblically

American Fascists

Everything Bad is Good For You

So yeah, no fiction. That should change rather soon, as I need a release from somewhat deeper stuff and the rest of the world.

So yeah, I'll be back in a bit, I guess.

Long time, no post [Feb. 22nd, 2008|11:45 pm]
Well, I'm finally voting for a Democrat for President after the last few cycles of voting Third Party. Obama is actually talking about being a Democrat instead of the centrist stuff of the last few nominees. Yes, I'm happy in the political sense.

Also, things might be looking good for my family for a change, and I may have to become a Maple Leafs fan. No, the two are not related, even though the latter might end up being interesting at work. It's already interesting with some of my friends. The "you and her? Cool!!! Conversation happened tonight."

Well, off the Chattanooga in the morning. If you're curious about how my potentially last season of rugby is going, check out to see the match reports. The last report (as of today) is about the match against our arch rivals, the Renegades, and I'm mentioned in it. Hint: I kind of single-handedly scored a try in that one. Note to opposing fly-halves: don't kick to me, even in my old age. At least one of my friends has attended one of my matches and understands what I can do out there--even this close to retirement.

Eli Manning: Super Bowl Quarterback [Jan. 20th, 2008|10:22 pm]
Yes, this is true.

Wow.

Congrats to the Manning family. Back to back years with brothers quarterbacking their teams in the Super Bowl. Now what if the Giants somehow beat the Pats?

Good article on Dr. King and how he's remembered [Jan. 20th, 2008|09:15 pm]
King's complexity is largely ignored

I do find it rather interesting that few people ever talk about what Dr. King did AFTER the signing of the Civil Rights Act, and how few people know why he was in Memphis when he was shot. Oh, well, hopefully, when people are off from work or school tomorrow, they'll take some time to learn not just about Dr. King, but about everyone who has fought for equality for all people.

True, that's probably a pipe dream, as most people will just sit around their house or go to the mall or do some other nonsense, so I'll just settle with people maybe just learning a bit more about Dr. King for starters.

Excellent read by Cynthia Tucker [Jan. 20th, 2008|05:14 pm]
Just telling people the truth about our society

I've been expressing the thoughts in this column for a long time on message boards and other venues, but some people just won't listen. Heck, I've explicitly stated to people, "hey, man, I'm saying that what you just said either is or can be construed as racist/sexist/homophobic/etc. I'm not calling YOU a bigot." But they don't get it, and then they go off on a rant about "PC police" or the "pussification of America". OK, first of all, what many of these guys complain about with regards to "PC" is actually just a case of someone asking that they have tact and/or learn to treat other people with respect. And I don't see how someone taking offense at things such as nooses and other attempts at intimidation can be seen as "pussification". Would we be a stronger society if White Anglo Saxon Protestants could go about telling Jews that they belong in a gas chamber? Would we be a stronger society if WASPs could harass Black people with nooses, burning crosses, and other crap? I think not. But it seems that there are people who feel otherwise, which is another reason that people really need to come clean and be honest with themselves and each other.

I mean, shit, dude, someone on ESPN.com claimed that because not every person who was lynched was Black (sorry, only 67% of them were Black...), the term "lynch" shouldn't invoke a negative image for Black people. He further claimed that when he hears the word "lynch", he doesn't think about a mob of white people attacking a Black person. Now, either this person is extremely naive and sheltered (BTW, he claimed to be in his late 20s...), or he's being deliberately obtuse and is insulting everyone's intelligence. I'm going to go with the latter.

Which brings something up, in Tucker's column, she states that only extremists overtly state their racism. Well, I've found that more and more people are becoming comfortable with expressing their racism and other forms of bigotry and hatred on-line because of the relative anonymity. And guess what? There are many, many more bigoted people out there than there are enlightened people. This isn't surprising, but it should not be any less disturbing that we already knew that. Now the key is finding a way to fix this mess.

And people wonder why I hate LSU and their fans [Jan. 16th, 2008|07:11 pm]

Seriously, if that "school" were to burn down today, I would laugh. I would laugh hysterically.

Many people don't get that these people represent LSU and their supporters more often than not.

And no, this is NOT a private post.

Wow! Another post! [Dec. 25th, 2007|08:54 pm]
Here is an interesting column with comments about standardized testing in schools. Personally, I think that we should do more of what they do in Europe, which is less multiple choice and more essays and short answers. Yes, it will cost more and take more time, but we can better evaluate what students have learned. Additionally, we'll have fewer standardized tests.

Standardized tests have a place in our society, like for professional certification and continuing education. But for students, I believe that there should be less testing, and the testing that exists should focus more on thinking and analysis and less on rote memorization, which often forces teachers to teach to a test rather than help a student learn and develop as a person. Right now our system is about teaching kids to be good followers and productive workers. Yes, it's important to be productive on your job because without it you can't pay the rent, but it's more important as a citizen of society to be able to think critically, ask questions, and provide solutions to the problems that we find in our society. In other words, we can be active participants in improving our society.

We're supposed to be a society of thinkers. We're supposed to be a democracy. America was founded on dissent and critical thought, not on conformity. Unfortunately, our current educational system turning out people who seem to feel otherwise, and thus act in that manner.

Any thoughts?

A list of most drunken cities... [Dec. 3rd, 2007|11:49 pm]
REALLY?

Interesting

BTW, if you watched Monday Night Football tonight and say Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Willis McGahee during the pre-game and didn't get a little cloudy eyed, then I question whether you have a heart.

Seriously.

Now, for those who somehow don't know about it, they are guys from the same school as Sean Taylor, the safety from the NFL team from Washington who was murdered last Monday. Lots of emotion there, and it's good to see my fellow men show their feelings. There's a lot to say about brotherhood.

In other NFL news, I refuse to discuss the last three minutes of the Saints game yesterday.

For those who are my friends, an unexpected and horrific result of my post from last (early) Sunday morning is that I had met someone else who is wicked cool, but I didn't do anything because of the person whom I mentioned on that rather drunken night. Of course, now that the nonsensical one isn't in the picture by her own volition, the other is now seeing someone. Fucking great.

No, I'm not bitter about wasting my time over this chick or anything.

Hispanic workers not charged by held in jail for months. [Dec. 2nd, 2007|05:28 pm]
Really strange case, and I can see the local authority's position. However, you would think that someone would get their head out of their ass and state that these guys will NOT be deported, at least until after the trial is done with.

File this under "No Shit, Huh?" [Nov. 13th, 2007|10:18 pm]
Black Pessimism at 20 year high regarding racial progress in America

Let's see: Katrina, Jena, all of the bullshit that some of us have to encounter daily on-line, on talk radio, in newspaper editorials and letters to the editor, and in person. Oh, and let's not forget the growing income game. Yep.

But now some Angry White Male is going to say that it's all our own fault for mentioning race when, say, someone displays nooses, bullwhips, etc. at work and that we shouldn't be upset at such a "practical joke". What the fuck kind of mindset do you have to have in order to believe that hanging a noose is a practical joke? Seriously. How the fuck else is someone supposed to take that? Especially in the South. I don't see people building gas chambers for their Jewish friends as a "practical joke". Maybe because that shit's not funny, either.

God damned stupid people on this planet.

From the comments after this article: "Other sports have performance enhancement scandals, but tennis has attempted murder"

Wow.

The Hawks game was fun tonight. The Hawks won, despite a Maravichian night from Steve Nash (31 points, 10 assists). Good times.

BTW, also on a sports note, I haven't visited any Saints message board in about a month. The Saints haven't lost in about a month. In fact, the last time that I visited a Saints message board was during their last loss. Coincidence? In all likelihood, yes. However, as a devout sports fan (are you challenging my fanhood???!!!), I can't visit a Saints board for the rest of the season. Just sayin', yo.

And there are interesting developments at my former job, which included one of the VPs asking a close friend of mine what she thought that it would take to get me to come back there. A few other people have either left or turned in their notices since I left, and prior to the events of the first half of this week, they were having a lot of problems. My former boss (whose mostly involuntary departure pretty much led to my extremely voluntary departure) and I talked about this situation earlier in the evening, and we determined that if the powers that be had handled things better about one and a half or two years ago, they wouldn't be in this mess.

Well now they have to lie in the bed that they made, and it's not my problem.

Unless, of course, they are willing to meet with some pretty steep demands. I've already done some consulting for them, and they would probably have to pay at least the rate that I've consulted for in order for me to return. That, and they'd have to give me MUCH, MUCH more freedom, a title, and other perks. Let's just say that I seriously doubt that's going to happen any time soon.

But, you never know.

I mean, the kid's only putting up LaDanian Tomlinson type numbers. Yes, I said it. And it's an appropriate comparison when you look at the production and competition that both Forte and Tomlinson have faced in college.

An interesting comparison between Katrina and the wildfires [Oct. 28th, 2007|10:50 am]
There are SOME similarities, but too much is different. However, your Reich Wingers and other assorted racists, sexists, and other worthless scum will try to make it sound like the situations were identical and that the people in CA (particularly their Republican Governator) are better than the people of Louisiana and New Orleans.

Hopefully, the more rational among us will realize that the two situations are only comparable in that both situations are disasters. I don't have much confidence in that, because the majority of people are too content living out their ignorant lives.
