| HMS Liverpool |
[Oct. 2nd, 2007|11:04 pm] |
I suppose I am cheating a little here as none of this was taken on the Solent, or indeed anywhere near the Solent.
I was in Cardiff on Friday and alongside in Cardiff bay was HMS Liverpool with some of her crew rehearsing something.

| Refurbishment of St. Helen 2007 |
[Sep. 9th, 2007|01:09 pm] |
No, there has not been a burglary onboard. This is actually the much delayed refurbishment of St. Helen. As you can see, all the furniture, carpets etc have been ripped up in preparation for new carpets and newly upholstered seating.
This is still a work in progress and I don't expect the ship to be back in service for a good few days. I should be able to get some shots of the completed work soon after she is back on the run.
This should be the same style of carpting and furnishings as the rest of the St Class have recently been done up with.

| Virtual Solent now available |
[Aug. 26th, 2007|01:12 am] |

You can now keep an eye on the virtual goings on in The Solent thanks to this computer game named "Ship simulator 2008" which gives you, amongst many other things, Red Funnels fleet members Red Eagle & Red Jet 4 to play with.
This is a clip someone posted on Youtube showing a less than successful mission with the Red Eagle. Shows you just how good this game is though...
(Just to point out, I don't think English was the first language of whoever made this clip) |

Took some footage this afternoon of the tanker "WHITMARINER" fuelling us on St. Clare.
St. Clares chief engineer put it best...
"Well today we took on 21000 litres of Heavy Fuel, IFO180, that's Inter Fuel Oil, Black stuff! and 10000 Litres of Diesel, For next Tuesday I've ordered 26000 litres of heavy, and then on the following Thursday another 20000 litres of heavy and another 10000 litres of Diesel again."

I did not make this so I don't take any credit for it.

A light hearted one now....
Based on the Wacky Races theme tune...The Fastcat races the car ferry and some yachts across the Solent. Starring the St. Helen as the "Army Surplus Special" and us on the FastCat as the "Bullet proof bomb" manouvering for position as we pass the car ferry... Enjoy! :)

From bbc news...
FERRY INCIDENT BRINGS MAJOR DISRUPTIONBy Ross Findon - Friday, June 1, 2007 A FRENCH woman was sectioned under the Mental Health Act after she threatened to kill herself on board a Red Funnel yesterday (Thursday). The woman, in her 30s, was spotted by the captain on a high level of the vessel, near the bridge. Police and paradmedics were called to the scene and negotiated with the woman for around two hours before she agreed to come down. Acting inspector Nick Heelan, who went to the scene, praised the efforts of Cpt James Foster and emergency care practioner Nick Coventry for their part in the operation. The incident caused severe delays on the service, disrupting the journeys of around 2,000 passengers, according to Red Funnel. |

Some Hovercraft photos from today.
The brand new Hovercraft "Solent Express" waits just off Southsea while another Hover departs. Notice that it has deflated a bit while it waits.

"Solent Express" puffs itself back up as it revs up and begins to head for Southsea...

Nice pic of the other older Hovercraft and the departing Brittany Ferries "Mont St Michel".

| Farewell Cuthred - 1969-2007 |
[Apr. 10th, 2007|10:33 pm] |
Farewell to MV Cuthred....The 'rogue ship'
In 1969, Sealink's Portsmouth - Fishbourne route aquired a brand new ferry. Her name was CUTHRED. Regarded as a 'rogue' ship, she lasted on this route until 1987 having had the shortest career of any other P-F ferry. Cuthred was the very first of what became known as the C-class ferries, of which Caedmon, Cenred and Cenwulf are still very much in Isle of Wight service on the Lymington - Yarmouth route.
After departing from Sealink she went to Portugal where her career continued and she was renamed MIRA PRAIA.
I have just learned that, in the coming months, Cuthred will be retired and very likely scrapped.
I have very kindly been sent this very recent photograph of her in Portugal.

"Her last day in service was Friday 30th January 1987. On her final day, apart from a decided lack of provisions in the snack bar, there was no indication that the ship was about to go out of service. Passengers on her last sailing were probably unaware that they were on a rather special trip. Skippered by Captain Bill Frampton, Cuthred's final service run was a mid-afternoon sailing from Portsmouth - Fishbourne. She never entered Portsmouth harbour again........" - Extract taken from "The Fishbourne car ferry", a most excellent book by Mr John Faulkner.
