My motion has been filed, my documents have been reviewed.  I have to hurry down now to try to get out of town as soon as possible.  I tried to call home, but only got an answering machine instead of

[info]ajb47 .  I left a message telling him to pack up the kids and the dogs, grab as much canned food and water as he can, and hit the road as soon as possible -- to stay away from I-95.  He should go up the Northeast Extension to his parents (they both have pickup trucks, they can transport lots of supplies) and then maybe go to the Poconos.

I'll catch up with them as soon as I can.  I just hope he got the message -- frankly, that weird phone call I got from his cell phone sort of freaked me out.

Hmmm, definitely not able to take the trains home.  All of 30th Street Station is closed, and the area is cordoned off for several blocks around it.  From a senior partner's corner office on the west side of the building, I can see all the flashing lights -- about five minutes ago, there was some sort of explosion, and there's now a black cloud of smoke rising up above the station.

There are scores of people moving east from the station on the streets below, but they don't seem to be running -- shuffling, more like.  It looks like there might be some fighting breaking out.

Maybe I should go downstairs and catch a cab now at the corner of 18th & Cherry, before the crowds get this far.

Subject:Hoping to Get Out of Work Early
Security:Public

I wouldn't have come in at all during this beautiful summer day, but there were at least two things I needed to get done: finalizing a motion for filing, and reviewing some documents to put into a witness file for a deposition next week. Almost done with both of them, so I'll probably be able to light out early...

Heard that the trains might be shutting down, though. I heard something on the radio about an Amtrak train coming in from DC with a bunch of sick passengers, and they might not be letting anyone go through 30th Street Station. If I could only get through these docs, I could actually e-file the motion from home, from my sunny back deck. (Note to [info]chi_editrix: I don't care if my house isn't a boat, I still call it a deck.)

The trial period for finalizing Sarah's adoption was only supposed to be three, but with my sister getting married and then scheduling difficulties, it took a while for us to get around setting a day/time for our volunteer coordinator to come back out, do a final check, get the balance of the payment, and then declare us officially a two-dog family again. This required some quick emergency cleaning, to make at least the ground floor of the house remotely presentable. Because ... well... Chez Butterwick is less than a model of cleanliness and order at the best of times. And this was NOT the best of times.

After that, we needed to find a way to keep the kids otherwise occupied, so the cleaning up would not be all for nought (naught? knaught? knought? I'm too lazy to google to clear up the brain-glitch on the spelling of that) until Tami arrived. So AJ set up the 12-ft diameter/36 inch Intex pool that he picked up earlier in the week (just in time for the rainstorms to arrive). It took about 4.5 hours to fill completely, but we let the kids in when it was about half full -- otherwise, I think their impatience would have driven them mad. They had to take a break for a while when Tami arrived (some chocolate puddin' consoled them), and then right back in after that. Barring rain, it looks like AJ's got a sure way to keep the kids entertained this summer.

For dinner, he grilled hotdogs for the kids and some barbecue chicken breasts for us to have sandwiches. With some fresh fruit and typical summer sides (cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans), it was a perfect meal. Ice cream sandwiches for dessert. All very summery, a great close to a great day.

From  [info]chi_editrix by way of [info]lignamorren by way of Viv.

SCATTERGORIES… It’s harder than it looks!

When you are done, send it on to everyone who likes games, including to the person who sent it to you. Use the 1st letter of your name to answer each of the following… They have to be real places, names, things…nothing made up! Try to use different answers if the person in front of you had the same 1st initial. You CAN’T use your name for the boy/girl name question.

I have a similar problem as

[info]chi_editrix in that if it is to be my "real" name, I should use R, but could use the one that more people on my flist know me by (though, oddly, not  the editrix herself!).  I'll do both.  Also, as she suggested, I have added a new one (and picked up the one that [info]lignamorren added).

What is your name……….. Becca/Rebecca
Four Letter Word………….  taking it literally, boob and rant
Vehicle………………. bicycle/Rolls Royce
City……………………… Boise/Rome
Boy Name…………… Bob/Raymond
Girl name…………… Beatrice/Regina
Drink…………………… Bourbon/Rotgut
Occupation…………. Beautician/Railroad engineer
Something to Wear……… Bib/Robe
Celebrity…….........…. Burt Bacharach/Robert Downey Jr.
Food………………… Borscht/Rugalach
Something found in a bathroom………. bottles/rinse
Reason for Being Late…………………… backed-up traffic/reluctrance (oh, I so want a name that begins with "Z" so I can blame zombies for my lateness) Reanimated corpses!
Cartoon Character…………….  Bugs Bunny/Road Runner
Something You Shout……………. Bullshit!/Run!  The Zombies are coming!!!
Animal………………. Bison/Rabbit
Word to describe you…. ...... Brilliant!/Round
Disease........................ Bell's Palsy/rubella
Element ....................... Boron/Rhodium
Movie ...........................  Beastmaster/Running Scared

[info]brooklynite a sort of not-quite-but-ought-to-be meme of (I think) his own invention -- I quote:

I'm going to send a care package to anyone who asks. My choice of gifts --- could be stuff I've made, or a book I think you'll like, or something fabulous I happen to have lying around. I dunno. Maybe a piece of Casey's Abigail's or Evan's artwork. I'll probably send two or three things, none of them bulky. If you live on the other side of the world, I'll pick out something particularly light and low-postage.

Whatever it is, it'll be a physical object, so I'll need your snail mail if I don't have it.

The only catch is you have to reciprocate. Send me something. Anything. If you want to post this offer on your own blog, you're of course welcome to do so, but you don't hafta.

That's it. It's fun to give people stuff, it's fun to get stuff, and I've got lots of stuff. Want some stuff?

If you want in, leave your email and mailing addresses in a comment below (I'll screen and toss them, obviously).

My good friend  [info]lignamorren  provided me with a new userpic.  (I'm such a doofus -- I prompted him via email before checking my LJ friends feed to find that the icon was already done and available for me.  I plead stupidity; I usually read my LJ before my email, but this morning I did it completely bass-ackwards.)  I especially love the hockey stick carried by the [info]ajb47  slug, and the little tail waggle from one of the dog-slugs.

A larger version of the drawing is available on his LJ page.

Me:  I'm sure he'd like that.

Evan:  I don't wike bacon.

Abigail:  I do.  I looooovvvvve bacon.  It's crispy.

Me:  It was before the war.

Abigail:  Huh?

Me:  Nevermind.

Evan:  Mommy, what's war?  I don't wike war.

Abigail:  You know what else tastes good with bacon?

Me:  What?

Abigail:  ICE CREAM!!!

Evan:  I wike ice tweam.  But I don't wike bacon.

They're actually having more fun playing Mater's National Championship than their expressions in this photo might indicate.

Oh, and about Evan's haircut -- On Thursday, AJ was in the kitchen when he heard Evan say, "Okay, now let me cut YOUR hair!"  He got to them before Evan actually managed to use the scissors on his sister -- but she had already given him a new hairstyle.  We took him to Mastercuts yesterday; there really wasn't much that could be done to salvage any of the length -- and there are spots (including right in front, at the top of his forehead) where it wasn't even possible to even things out.

They make me a little less crazy.

If Evan tries on his Sleeping Beauty nightgown tonight, I will post another picture...

Behind these true statements, posted in the Facebook "true or false" quiz:

[info]oddprofessor :  "I once warned off a small group of drunk men in New Zealand by faking a Brooklyn accent."

[info]chi_editrix :  "A guy once rejected me by saying I had nice handwriting."

[info]jupiter9 : "I was once a telephone psychic."  (I heard this a while ago, but can't remember the tale .. and want to hear more about the FBI part.)
