well...today is the day. the chopper's block. the guillotine. the lion's den. the day that's been built up to since the last year of my undergrad. the day that i've been looking forward to but not.
THESIS DEFENSE.
in an hour, they are going to slit me open and leave me to bleed to death. well. maybe not so morbidly. the point is, they are gonna attack me today the scariest part being they are 4 professors who are all experts in the field. the second scariest part being they each take a stand to attack me for twenty minutes. i don't know. and i dont know. please dont tell me i will do fine because at this point i am not sure if i will. like 300 plus references are hard enough to remember for an academic, and put the fact that i dont feel like an academic into the mix...whew.....aieeee

*does a lil dance.....* WOOT!!!!
my thesis today was APPROVED by my supervisor to send off to the secondary readers!
that means if THEY approve (the two of them) and sign off, I can go forward to my oral defense!
so I am 3/4 way there, on my....6th or 7th draft..... 141 pages... this will be a full on book. what makes me happy is not just the publication but requests for copies of the publications once it is out! : D : D wootwootwoot i feel very academic today.

| France, Spain.... |

im back, im back...and it was a damn good trip!!
I cannot get europe out of my head, and i feel my thesis to be a cruel punishment for my unprecedented enjoyment. how i miss the streets lined with umbrellas and lawn chairs, wine glasses on table cloths, and scantily lit cobblestone walkways leading to back alleyways and sideways streets slanted from tree speckled mountainsides...
our journey encompassed Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and Granada, all large and prominent european cities, three of which we rode the metro on. However for the duration of the trip, we rented a car and drove from North to south and back to the north (including Lyon, Provins, Carcassone, Burgos, Vitoria, Sansebastian, Bayonne, Tours...), spanning most of France and Spain.
The ENTIRE trip, including getting lost and driving in circles (european roads are radial instead of grid-like, and do not show signs of which direction you are going east west south north, but rather which the next major city you are to end up in) was (and this one's for Alex) 4500km, and 5.5 tanks of gas, each tank holding about 40 L. I would say European cars are quite efficient!

writing from a place by Barcelona, Spain...
firstly, the keyboards are féd up
secondly....i am having the time of my life with my two bestest friendsests evar.
Day 1 & 2: paris climbed the eiffel tower: scary, cos itś out in the open with nothing to stop you from peering over the precarious edges---when the sun finished setting it lit up in sparkly lights trawled around the city arc of triumph champs délyees catacombs: thousands of piled human bones in an underground tunnel with philsophical death phrases carved in front of each stack... moulin rouge--and surrounding sex shops (apparently ou can view porn in theatres there) sacre couer notre dame...awesome architecture plus a cool crypt thing
...wicked city views and lovely cafes...we went to a brasserie where alex and neil had beef fondue in wine and i had a salad which consisted of fried potatoes, smoked salmon and sour cream (wtf?) but it was amazingly delicious...and the boulangeries have the freshest most delicious bread i have ever had in my life. alex and neil indulged the street crepes too.
Day 3 Pere LaChaise Dragged our luggage around for an hour or so up cobblestone paths to look for jim morrisons grave...finally found it hidden away, but covered in masses of flowers and other like-worshipping things...above ground tombs, much like new orleans
Provins: medieval fortified city with underground caves and tunnelsbuilt in the 12 C...it was cold and dark with grates in the ceilings and roman arches--apparently a former hospital of sorts? the cobblestone streets, the skinny roads the cool stone buildings with castley roofs made it tres awesome!!
Day 4 Lyon beautiful buildings lining up and down the saone river, fresh markets, sassy fancy everything (including the mcdś, surprisingly)...we climbed to the top of a mountain and saw some cathedral thing...(the climbing to alexś dislike) Carcassone another living medieval city on a hill, completely surrounded by a wall and would-be moat--amazing view of the city... weird cookie-candy shoppe where you could buy olives dipped in chocolate, cats and dogs run amok within the city walls....and people living within...actually! Perpignon Beautiful mediteranean city....off the coast
all in all we did alright spoke french the whole time there; had a few misunderstandings, but overall, the french appreciated our valiant efforts, and between the three of us, we got on
Day 5 we are in barcelona now, living on a mountain (which i SWEAR neil wouldve backed up off the cliff of with his one handed parallel parks on the top...)....i feel like a fish out of water...i could read most things in france, but here, barely, and of course, can speak spanish...but itś still nice here--very hot, palm trees everywhere. tonite we ditch the car to train it into the city centre, and check out the historical sites...and of course the beaches, the beaches
...all in all we got by ..........more updates to come!! now to get back to our hostel.bye!

By now, my thesis is supposed to be 2/3 done...notice how i said *supposed* to be. Anyways, I am presenting what I have done to my prof before she flies off to Europe and other various prof-related intercontinental travels from now until September...which MAY prove to be a problem, since I am supposed to defend this August. In any case, I am hard at work, and by that I mean chained to the desk in the library, wistfully gazing at the sunshine...and longing, might I add. I really have no time these days between this darn thesis and work...but as I always say, I love being busy. I just envision a fishing rod infront of me with a dangling carrot or some other vegetable I love equally as much...like in those cheesy cartoons from the 60's...and i'm pedalling hard, cos i hope to get somewhere..... somewherrrre over the rainboww.... ho man. I am SO delirious from work. CHL game tonite (work) Green Living show next week (work) CWC conference May 12 My Chemical Romance (like I'm a 15 yr old fake emo kid or something.....heyy at least there will be lotsa fake emo boys too! ^_^ pretty emo boys!!) May 15 Arcade Fire--sold OUT!! back to thesising.
