It's very hard to maintain my faith in humanity while listening to adoring crowds squealing their approval as Sarah Palin derides the very idea of reading suspected terrorists their rights and as Rudy Giuliani scoffs at the thought that there might actually be two or more sides to a conflict, as opposed to one absolute good and one dastardly evil.
I don't know why I do this to myself, really; watching the RNC. I know I'm just going to walk away from it offended and slightly nauseated, but somehow I always managed to underestimate the level of reflexive patriotism and emotive rhetoric and the disturbing obsession with war and "victory". It makes John Howard look reasonable by comparison.
(Also, it is shitting me that Palin doesn't refer to Barack Obama by name. Every time she calls him "our opponent", I get a little flashback to not-yet-President Bartlet. I think it's going to make me look like I can't remember his name. I think it's going to make me look addled. I think it's going to make me look dotty. And even if it didn't make me look like those things it would remain a stupid idea.)
(Also #2: Calling Obama's speech theatre, deliberately orchestrated in a crafted setting filled with adoring sycophants? Pot, meet kettle.) |

I have a cold and am feeling all gross and sick and gross. So to distract me from that, here is something that cheered me up!
Adam Hills, my favourite monopedal comedian ever, had an insane show in Leeds that ended in his artificial foot being crowd-surfed as he propped himself up on a beach ball and everybody broke into a chorus of "Footloose", all under the watchful eye of Santa (you can see him blog about it here). And some wonderful folk thought to video it!
( Look! )
And then had an equally insane show in Reading where, in the middle of his set on the best heckles he's ever received, Adam discovered that one of the hecklers (a woman in a wheelchair who, in response to his remark that he has an artificial foot, yelled out, "so've I!" and passed hers around the room). He wanted to hug her, but the only way to get across the room was to crowd-surf. So he did. And then blogged drunkenly about it!
( Video again! )
So yeah, I love Hillsy. |

Psych, Psych! Don't start going soft on me now! Really, if I want to see my hero delivering heartfelt and insightful monologues that within a matter of seconds change the subject's entire outlook on life, I'll watch a real psychic detective show. I mean, the soppy sentimentality was only to be expected in the high school reunion episodes, this being American TV, but enough already.
Also, please stop trying to make Lassy out to be a complete tool. It's getting annoying. |

When it comes to their interviews with "average Americans" on the street, though, I really don't know whether to be amused or afraid. I mean, they're obviously edited down, but... yikes. Take this one, for instance, in which Julian Morrow asks Americans' opinions about an ape called Chumba who has hired himself some evolutionist lawyers and intends to argue to the Supreme Court that humans descended from him and therefore he should get welfare payments:

Cath and I saw Wicked today! It was really fun, and pretty. One of the few adaptations that exceeds the original. (Sorry, Gregory Maguire. You have some fascinating ideas, but I find your books bizarre and creepy and generally somewhat overrated.)
I'm really worried about my dog. He's been pissing everywhere lately. I mean more than usual. He's an old dog and for several months he's had this habit of pissing inside if he's not let out every few hours which, since he's slept inside at night ever since he fell in the pool a few years ago, is kind of an annoyance. (Thank god for floorboards.) But today he's been kind of unresponsive and pretty much every time I've let him inside he's ended up pissing everywhere. I did take him for a brisk-ish (for him) walk yesterday, I don't know if that strained him... D: I'm worried.
I've finally gotten around to reading the new Obernewtyn book, The Stone Key. It's kind of reminding me of all the reasons I got hooked on the series as a teenager, as well as all the reasons it annoys the crap out of me. ( Slightly spoilery. ) |

This is Kristen!

She's utterly wonderful. Kooky, dorky and completely adorable - her style doesn't appeal to everybody (unlike other Daily Show correspondents like John Oliver and Lewis Black, she does next to no topical comedy), but I just love her ridiculous characters and her random flights of whimsy.
( 'No, we were not lesbians! We were much more than that. We were BESTbians.' ) |

| Adam Hills: THE FIGHTIN' HILLS. |
[Jul. 16th, 2008|12:23 pm] |
The fangirling (belated) continues with Australia's favourite monopedal comedian, Adam Hills! Pretty much solely because I can't think of a better transition than Tim Minchin's serenade to him:
This is Adam!
If you're Australian, you might recognise him as the host of Spicks and Specks. It so happens he is also a stand-up comic of awesomeness.
( Why you should love him. )
One of the things I love about Adam is the way he's able to play off the audience. ("I don't do gigs, I just have chats," he quipped at the show I saw, after discovering that he'd already spoken to the audience member he was bantering with at a previous show.) He's really quick on his feet and has a great ability to make other people a part of his act. And he's super nice, even to creepy stalker fans like the girls lurking around at the show I saw. (They gave him Tim Tams and he shared them with the audience.) Also, he does a great T-1000 Terminator impersonation. |

I have decided to dub this week a Week of Levity in my LJ, and to celebrate it duly by fangirling a different comedian every day by sharing videos, links and miscellaneous other things that make me love them. Because it is good to share the love.
Today, Australian musician/comedian/actor Tim Minchin: THE FIGHTIN' MINCHIN.
...I'm sorry, it was just waiting to be said.
This is Tim!

( Why you should love him: )
( More Tim goodies! )
And hell, since we're already on the subject of awesome musical comedians, I feel the need to express my love for Sammy J: THE FIGHTIN' J. (I sense that line is going to get annoying very quickly.)
This is Sammy! (Plus one.)

( Why he, too, deserves your love. ) |

Just back from Adam Hills' show! I do believe I love him even more than I did before. It was his birthday tonight but his parents had forgotten he was doing a show and he started the show by warning that he might have to take the call if they phoned while he was onstage. Which they did, but he missed it. So he called them back and they sang Happy Birthday on speakerphone. It was fairly adorable. XD
I love his humour. It's so joyful. Not mean-spirited or exceptionally angry, but more just about being able to laugh at the silliness of life. It's the kind of act that just leaves you grinning.
The car-top dancing was pretty amusing, too. |

Phillip: Gentlemen, we have a saying in the public service... Policy on the run is policy underdone. Tony: ...right. See, I don't get that either. Phillip: If we're serious about implementing... Tony: Okay, if you were just seeing the clippings from yesterday, I mean people were responding to the PM and... Phillip: Tony. We've got a choice here. Tony: (Sigh) Do we? Phillip: We come up with a serious policy framework incorporating all the latest science. Tony: And that's the eighteen months one? Phillip: Yeah. Or we can take the populist route. Superficial responses to the latest whims of the general public. Tony: ... just for interest's sake, how long would that take?

BAH. Why do iMovie projects take up so much space? I've got literally a one-minute vid of which I've only finished about 25 seconds, and it already takes up 36 gigabytes. And the other one, which is over three times that length and of which I've already done about a minute is over 27 gig. What the hell? |

Showrunner Hart Hanson responds to the negative fan reaction to the Bones season finale:
"The network doesn't care if comments are good or bad. They count the hits... Our Internet presence is fairly negative. But we don't care about that, because they're all watching."
Wow. Well, fuck you, too.
He's said this kind of crap before - that nobody cares what fans think as long as they keep watching - and it really pisses me off. There's a difference between listening to the fan reaction and taking marching orders from the fans, you know? But what bothers me even more is that this just feels like even more proof that the show's selling out - it's going more and more for the cheap shock (or squee) tactics, creating melodrama for the sake of melodrama because they know that that's what pulls the ratings. Meanwhile, the characters we adore and the dynamic that drew us to the show in the first place suffers.
I just don't see why, if they stay true to those amazing characters rather than drawing them into contrived, cliched situations with big flashy cliffhangers and dramatic reveals, they shouldn't get the ratings anyway. |
