06:41 pm - Happy Loving Day!
From Kos:
Today is Loving Day, the anniversary of the day in 1967 when interracial marriage became legal across the United States.

The seemingly appropriate name actually comes from a court case, one started by Mildred and Richard Loving, who were forbidden from marrying in their home state of Virginia. At the time, Virginia was one of sixteen states that had laws making it illegal for couples to marry across racial lines. The Lovings were married in Washington in 1958, but as soon as they returned to Virginia, the couple was arrested. The Lovings spent time in jail for violating Virginia's state law against people of different races "cohabitating as a man and wife."

It wasn't until nine years later that the Supreme Court set aside their conviction and ruled that the Virginia anti-miscegenation laws, and all other such state laws, were unconstitutional. Loving Day is not remembered as a victory for Civil Rights, and there are commemorations of the day in several states.

02:35 pm - My life expectancy
I heard on NPR health and science that one researcher has discovered that just about all mammals follow the rule that average life expectancy is 1.5 billion heart beats, from mice to elephants, and everything in between. Humans are the exception because of all of our medical advancements, clean environment, etc. But I wanted to explore the idea a little further to determine how long *I* should live. I always thought it would be a miracle if I lived to be 35 when I was a kid because I was so ill, although lately I have hopes to possibly live to be 50, albeit not in very good health for 10 years before.

I did the math during lunch.

Average human heart rate is 72 beats per minute. Most animals average life expectancy is 1.5 billion heart beats. That equals just over 40.5 years. Present day native life expectancy is 34 years, see wiki post Life Expectancy.

Kids have a higher heart rate, which would subtract some years from live expectancy using the 72 bpm value, probably bringing the calculated life expectancy to 35 yrs also: Humans 1-3 years is 130, average for 4-8 years old I 100, and 9-11 is 88. Average heart beat rate for persons of 12-16 is 80, and above 16 is 72 heartbeats per minute. (ref:http://www.steadyhealth.com/averege_human_heart_rate_t58106.html, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate)

Using these child heartrate values, I've calculated the average human life expectancy to be 35 years!

It really makes sense! People really start falling apart in their 30's w/out medical intervention. Think about it - the risk of just about everything increases when you are in your 30's.

My heartrate has been about 30% faster than average people throughout my life, mostly due to medications. I should start falling apart 30 percent faster. I feel like I've suddenly aged a lot since I was 26 yrs old (my complains are about the same as people in their mid-30's). Doing the math, my "real" age is 36 yrs old. My life expectancy should be about 59. Maybe a little higher since my heart rate is now less than 80 bpm resting.

Interesting, and yet depressing at the same time. I should take care and treat myself like a 36 yr old by eating the proper vitamins, doing the proper getting ready for old age exercizes, and physicals.

05:38 pm - botulism tainted canned foods
Tens of millions of cans of chili, chili sauce, beef stew, corned beef and dog food are being recalled nationwide because of possible contamination with the deadly botulinum toxin, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.

The recalled cans cover more than 90 brands and every "best by" date on the market. Four cases of botulism, two in Texas and two in Indiana, have been traced to the contaminated foods. The four patients were all hospitalized but are recovering, says Michael Lynch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Botulism can cause paralysis. Symptoms, including blurred vision and slurred speech, can occur 18 to 36 hours after eating tainted food.

Doing fine in Japan. Already forgetting the beginning and already sad that it is almost over. Wish I had time to write for my own memory. Today I was chased by deer. Guess where?

12:03 pm - 10 years!
10 years! That is how long I have been wanting/trying to go to Japan. Next month, it is finally happening - June 2 - 17th. I wish it could be longer, but the boyfriend's stupid job beckons. We have a friend near Mt. Fuji that we can stay with for a couple days. And hopefully someone in Tokyo, but I really do want to travel a bit in Central Honshu, so I'm hunting for any other housing donations to keep it affordable ;)

So if anyone has a place to stay or can recommend an affordable traditional ryokan in places full of Japanese culture and siteseeing in the Central Honshu area (and Kyoto), please let me know!

03:24 pm - first balboa win!
Finally won my first balba dance competition. Granted, it was an informal local thing at a new almost monthly venue, so it wasn't a "real" competition, the judges all know me, and even though it was a Jack and Jill, I randomly got matched up w/ my boyfriend/partner for the finals, but it did win me a $150 pair of remix vintage (dance) shoes, so I'm happy :) Now if only all the shoes weren't so ugly and narrow!

I never make balboa finals even if I am fairly certain I am better than several of the people who make it in. I just have the worst luck in prelims, and even did this time too. I told 5am to go ahead and compete without me and give me his free shoes since he was fairly certain to win (probably the 2nd best lead in town, the best being a national champion who was judging) and all the men's shoes are more hideous than the women's and. I just did not realize that there were no shoes I could wear. Maybe that is why I won >.< Oh well, the finals were fun and I think we danced about on par with our normal social dancing, which is an improvement for me during competition because I get so nervous and am not used to dancing in heels.

As of today, I am also offically a Manhattanite. I left my Westchester apt is better condition than when I moved in, but my landlord is an a$$hole that never returns calls or money, so I bet I won't get my >1K deposit back >.< I had to sell all my furniture and gave away the last bit I could not sell, which also cost >1K to buy originally. Looks like I will never be able to unpack given my situation in my new apartment, but there's not much I can do about it. Lets just hope we don't drive each other crazy.

06:02 pm - myspace
Are any of you on myspace?

I love myspace because I don't have to remember people's emails. I just click on their name and hit "send message." It seems like with the exception of very few people, the only ones I have on my myspace list are those I've met in the last 4 years from dancing.

If you don't want to post your name here, you can just send me a message:

10:52 am - My Sassy Girlfriend
I just watched My Sassy Girl (or Girlfriend) with 5am upon his recommendation last night. This Korean movie is one of the funniest schadenfreude type movies ever, with a nice touch of melodrama. Apparently, it started off the whole Korean movie/drama craze. The main female character is very masculine and kind of crazy, sort of like a stereotypical gang leader, although she is very much alone. The male character is a spineless nice guy, very stereotypical Asian geek that gets no chicks and has horrible luck. He's like the woman in their relationship - see scene where he pours her sake and wears high heels.

The comedy/drama in this movie is similar to Little Miss Sunshine, except it is about love and relationships. This movie has a nice twist at the end, and is a rarity with it's happy ending, so go watch it! I got my copy from silentregrets.com.
