From CNN today: Obama compares McCain's health care plan to deregulation of the banking industry, referring to the condoning crisis plaguing the country and Congress' recent $700 billion bailout of the banking industry.
"His plan calls for massive deregulation of the insurance industry that would leave families without the basic protections you rely on," Obama said. "He wants to deregulate the insurance industry just like he fought to deregulate the banking industry. And we've seen how well that worked out."
During the vice presidential debate October 2, Joe Biden described McCain as a longtime supporter of deregulation of the banking industry.
"As a matter of fact, John recently wrote an article in a major magazine saying that what he wants to do for the health care industry [is] deregulate it and let the free market move like he did for the banking industry."
In Congress, McCain has frequently supported deregulation. Some aspects of that deregulation are now widely blamed for the problems on Wall Street.
----------------- If this doesn't send a shiver up your spine, not sure what would. How can ANYONE support McCain? Except the super-rich, who are covered, and may not care how the other 99% get by.

Watched the debate on Thursday...neither candidate made stupendous gaffes. Got into heated online arguments with f-list members immediately after the debate by opining both candidates 'came off as civil and intelligent', which I followed in same comment with a qualifier that Biden came off far better informed and adequately experienced for the position than Palin.
Excuse me, I didn't mean 'intelligent' to Mensa members who have the luxury of working from home and spend 50%+ of their waking lives online reading political analyses from the BBC and other credible, national and international news agencies and think tanks.
I meant 'intelligent' to the ranks of blue and white collar wage-slaves who work at your local hardware stores, food markets, schools, hospitals and construction sites (the handful still open). Trust me, they will vote.
Many ljers are out of touch with mainstream America. You lead privileged lives. Good for you, but don't think you represent the majority of American voters (such as me), who may be too encumbered by supporting their families, working difficult public service jobs, enduring miserable commutes, watching evaporating savings, struggling with a lack of health insurance and/or the burden of caring for elders on weekends to research candidates as thoroughly as they should.
Palin didn't sound like an idiot to most working people who don't have time to read and analyze. You could argue they're in danger of paying dearly for that lack of scrutiny (again) and you'd get no argument from me.
Palin would be my worst nightmare as vice president, but I don't think she came off as unlikable or 'stupid' in the debate. Crafty, maybe. If viewers couldn't follow her cyclical non-answers, they were likely to have been absorbed by her poise, appearance and civility. She seemed superficially at least to hold up her end of the stage, and that was all that was asked of her.
Having unleashed that tirade, got a kick here from Aden Nak posted by Xeni Jardin at BoingBoing:

Met my life drawing class at the Juxtapoz show on Tuesday morning. I was supposed to meet another class yesterday, but I still had this cold and was coughing my head off so Mark made me stay home. Thank you Laguna Art Museum for taking the orphaned class on it's docent tour. More pix here

Right side detail of a recent diptych. Think it would make a good composition all by itself, too.
I kind of feel like this today. Claustrophobic. Home with an extreme version of a cold. Fortunately getting this sick is a rare occurrence. Hope to feel better soon.

This is Mark with me as a body-double for Caroline Kennedy, taken by a fellow passenger on the Long Beach-Avalon ferry last month.
We rented a crazy action/suspense/assassination plot film entitled 'Vantage Point' two nights ago, not bad. William Hurt played the President (and his body-double). Wow. Seeing contemporaries age on screen kind of creeps me out.
Was telling Mark that Hurt was a kinda hot leading guy, back in the day, but he hadn't seen him in anything. So i rented 'Body Heat'. I enjoy a lot of Larry Kasdan's work, he wrote and produced this, and produced 'The Big Chill' a couple years later, another personal favorite, also starring Hurt in a stellar ensemble cast. Next perhaps I'll rent 'Kiss of the Spider Woman', 'Children of a Lesser God', 'Terms of Endearment'. Any other suggestions? Suspect that Mark will be utterly sick of Hurt soon...he'll probably initiate a Kathleen Turner retrospective.

I'll never be a serious gardener, because I love some of the bugs more than my plants. One wonders how long this cheeky guy can survive, however, with the neon coat. Green tea for some passing raven...

Squee-jee almost got eaten by the neighbor's cat in our backyard, eight weeks ago. Somewhat miraculously, he survived, and is finally looking less like Harvey Dent (post-Joker)and more like an alert young scrub jay with quick reflexes. He'll take a peanut from my hand, but I haven't figured out how to document it. yet.

Headed down the 133 to the Juxtapoz show 'In the Realm of Retinal Delights'.
Missed the opening two months ago. Glad I missed it. This afternoon we had time and space to enjoy the work.
Todd Schorr and Mark Ryden's paintings are mind boggling. Many other strong pieces. I'll take the kids to see the show next month.
