Patrick is a really cool guy. A great artist. It tears me up to find out that Lou Gehrig's disease has caught him, and is consuming him.

Patrick doesn't want the last few years of his life to go without being productive. Patrick has started making a documentary and he desperately needs funds to complete it.

In order to raise awareness about this terminal & fatal disease, Patrick will also be riding his wheelchair across the state of New Jersey this summer.

If I were at home, I'd organize a benefit. Sadly, I find myself without the resources to do something from here. All I can do is spread the word.

“My name is Patrick. Sometime during the fall of 2004 I noticed an involuntary shaking in my legs. For a long time the exact cause eluded definition. However, on May 24th, 2005, I was officially diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), a terminal disease that results in the progressive degeneration of the nerves and muscles responsible for voluntary movement. I was 30 years old. I've been a filmmaker my entire life. While waiting for conclusive results from the doctors' tests, my mind kept returning to one specific film idea. In New Jersey, in the town of Asbury Park, is a building that is the last of its kind. It is the only Howard Johnson's in the entire state and one of only five left in the entire U.S. It is a beautiful place, mystical in a way. It's architecture, emotional residue, light blue bathrooms, beachfront location.. all of these had a profound impact on me in my youth while I was making films and taking photographs around New Jersey.
When I was officially diagnosed with ALS, I decided that I needed to document this place. I couldn't pinpoint the exact source of this compulsion. Up until that point, I had never made a documentary film. I was losing the ability to walk. I felt now more than ever a strong connection to this beautiful place that was on the verge of disappearing forever. I simply felt that the pureness of a documentary was what I needed to do. So I set out to catalog the details of this building, sad and stunning; alive, but clearly dying; wonderful and fleeting. The kindness of the people who helped me make this film, coupled with the elegance and mystery the building seemed to breathe while we were there overwhelmed my expectations. It is my hope that this documentation of the transition from vitality to extinction will live on, even after I am gone.”
