Shadow Truths - Index post
For new readers: Welcome! I hope that this post will provide an easy access point into my fiction writing. A few pieces must remain friends-locked for various reasons, but if you wish to read them, comment here and I'll be happy to add you.

Changeling serial: An ongoing near-future urban fantasy fairy tale/reincarnation/coming of age story. I try to post new chapters whenever I can. These, and all related materials, are tagged "changeling". Anything that strikes me as potentially NWS is marked as such, though nothing in this series is higher than an R rating, and the vast majority is PG-13. Certain terms and concepts are borrowed from the RPG Changeling: The Dreaming and I intend no copyright infringement via this loving fan tribute ;)

Reviews
"If you love Charles de Lint, Neil Gaiman, and other writers who blend fantasy tropes seamlessly and magically into scenes from the modern world, you'll probably love her work, especially her ongoing Changeling saga." ([info]urban_homestead)

32 Short Stories about Diablotin: a project I completed during [info]august_writing of 2006, a series of vaguely linked drabbles set in a high fantasy world I originally created for an RPG campaign.

Reviews
- "The drabbles were the highlights of my days while they lasted. I always looked forward to coming home from work and reading the newest." ([info]ladyiolanthe)
- "Each and every one of them illustrates a depth to the characters, even from my perspective as someone who hasn't played Diablotin, and left me curious to know more." ([info]meallanmouse)
- "I thoroughly enjoyed this series! I like the format, I like the idea... Any chance you might try something like it again?" ([info]longpig)

Fandom-related works: I write in a wide variety of fandoms, normally at the prompting of someone else ;) I've sorted these short pieces by fandom for your convenience. Some remain friends-locked for adult content - comment here to be added if you wish to read them. None of these characters or settings are mine!

Fandom )

Original Fiction: All friends-locked - comment if you wish to be added so you can read them. The contents of this section are subject to change if/when things get published. In the meantime, I welcome your thoughts!

I appreciate every comment I get. It's wonderful just to know that people are reading what I've written, and even better if it seems like they've enjoyed it! Constructive criticism is also welcome, however. I hope you'll find something here that you like, and if there's something you'd be interested in having me write, drop me a comment and I'll see what I can do! Thanks for stopping by.

Changelings, part 49 - Terminal
(Author's note: Look! A Changeling chapter! The first in, oh, nine months or so. Those of you who've been reading for a while might notice that the big gaps between chapters often come when I have something particularly wrenching to write and have to work up to it. So...yeah. Enjoy?)

It's that time again...
Sweet Charity

I'm offering two stories this time around, minimum of 1000 words each, in, you know, a bunch of fandoms I write (and a couple I haven't before, eek!) I'm in the For Sale section under Fiction -> Curtana if you want to read the details or, say, bid on me when the time comes. I'll be sure and post a reminder when the auction starts...

2007 Fic year in review
I already did a general summary post for my fic writing in 2007 (and I'm still rather astonished by how much of it there was), so I won't bother with the recap/first lines bit of the meme, and go right on to the questions!

Favourite story this year: None Other (Lion in Winter, Richard/Philip). The prompt consumed my thoughts from the time I spotted it, and I did a bunch of research for it, and I'm really ridiculously happy with how it turned out :)

My best story this year: I think it's probably The Moustache Affair (Jeeves & Wooster), which was damn hard to write and I'm quite happy with how I pulled it off.

Most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Maybe Nerves (Perseity, Margot/Bryce)? I think it's a very cute story, but the fandom, so to speak, is vanishingly small, and the vocabulary is a bit weird if you're not familiar with it, so it's not surprising it didn't get much attention even though I think it stands on its own pretty well.

Most fun story: Twist Ending (Firefly, Mal/Saffron) and Nostalgia (Blackadder Goes Forth gen) both seem to get a lot of laughs :)

Sexiest story: I'm still going to go with Advanced Lessons (Diablotin, Rayce/Ivona/Tigranne/Boden) because I continue to think it's smoking hot, and I usually don't feel that way about my own stories.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Dunno. Maybe Watch (Changelings, Ben/Cynthia/Kyle) with the gay incest and the reincarnation gender-switching stuff?

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: A Twist of the Knife (Lion in Winter, Geoffrey/Alais) because when the idea for it came to mind, it suddenly made so much sense. In fact, it even fits neatly into canon, so much so that now when I re-watch the movie I say to myself "Now she's going off to have sex with Geoff..."

Hardest story to do: Not Too Late (B5, Sinclair/Garibaldi), since it was for a request and it's really not a pairing I'd ever considered, or that even does much for me, to be honest. Still, I was relatively pleased with how it turned out.

Biggest disappointment: I'm actually not deeply disappointed with any of my stuff from the past year (ha, how arrogant of me!) but I don't think Strobe (BSG, Gaius/Six) came out very much like I intended at all, so that was sort of a let-down.

Biggest surprise: Either To Keep the Rain from Falling (ASOIAF, Ned/Jaime, Ned/Robert) or None of Us Are Whole (ASOIAF, Sansa/Theon) - neither pairings I'd ever considered before, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much sense they eventually made as I wrote. They were not nearly as cracked out as I expected them to be.

Most telling story: Good lord o_O I suppose they all say something about me, but maybe Normal, or Why Haydn Left (Exia, Haydn/Triskin), because Triskin was an RPG character I played, and so necessarily has some aspects of my personality in her.

A story I want remembered: The Secret Room (ASOIAF AU, Sansa/Joffrey/Sandor). Though there seems little risk of its being forgotten, since people keep politely pestering me to finish the sequel - which I swear is nearly done! Probably this week, even! :)

And, since [info]redcandle17's post reminded me, I will gladly write DVD commentaries for any of my fic (I'm already planning on doing one for 'None Other', since I have a number of research notes for it that are just begging to be turned into something useful and/or amusing...)

Purpose in life
(Author's note: just a little drabble I threw together for [info]meallanmouse... figured I'd post it here as well. It's Firefly, Jayne & Wash, G-ish.)

Purpose in life )

ETA: Oh yeah, it was in response to this meme. If you feel like playing along, please do!

If you love me, you'll write me a drabble based on whatever fortune you get here. Yes, that's right, I'm basing your love for me on arbitrary standards and randomly generated bits of wisdom.

I would also accept icons as love from those who don't feel they can drabble.

Denial
(Author's note: Lion in Winter, Geoffrey/Alais, PG-13. My last Yuletide treat, written about an hour before the deadline, for sharpeslass. I wanted to explore the earlier part of Geoffrey and Alais' relationship, without explicitly contradicting anything I'd said in A Twist of the Knife, my version of them during the film itself. It was hastily written, but I think not bad. It could certainly be expanded upon, if I ever find the time... Originally posted here.)

Nostalgia
(Author's note: Blackadder Goes Forth, PG. A Yuletide treat for edna_blackadder, I tossed this off [hahah, I said 'tossed off'] in a couple of hours on the evening of the 23rd. This was my most-recced story, as far as I can tell, and it received by far the most comments. It makes me happy - I guess all of those years of watching Blackadder weren't wasted, since it enabled me to spit out fic in a fandom I'd never actually written in before. And now, of course, I have other plotbunnies hopping about madly... Original link here.)

Yuletide recs, part 1
I am utterly blown away and overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of the Yuletide fics this year. Some of these have been recced to the skies already, but I couldn't just leave them out, for those of my friends who aren't inclined to browse through a 2000+ story archive ;) None of these are mine (naturally, although I do have seven - SEVEN! - stories in the archive - and will give the prize of a ficlet of your choosing to whoever can identify the most of them ;) and the authors are currently anonymous, but after the reveal I'll be sure to edit the post to add in their names. I started working from the end of the alphabet, and I'm up to N so far. Will try to get to the rest ASAP.

Colm Goes on the Lamb
(Author's note: In lieu of a Changeling chapter, I did manage to get [info]miseri's drabble request done, except it turned into more of a ficlet. As to whether it's canonical or not, well... I wouldn't believe anything Colm told me ;)

Small Fandom Fest
I will be participating in [info]smallfandomfest soon :) One nice thing about this fic challenge is that you can submit prompts without signing up to write anything of your own, so if there's anything you'd like to submit over there, you should do so by Nov. 22 - and maybe you'll get a story out of it! :)

Also, I'm still accepting prompts for drabbles/ficlets here, if anyone's interested.

Favourites meme
What are your three current favorites of the fics you've written? Post your answers as a comment here, explaining why you like your three stories, and then repost with the answers in your own journal. Include links so people can read what you're proud of!

I am going to cheat and pick three pornish fics and three non-pornish, because I'm greedy I wanted to pick things that are posted publically so that anyone who wants to can go and read them, but really, in the depths of my sordid little heart, the ones I'm proudest of are smut (and thus f'locked - ask to be added if you're interested :)

32 Short Stories about Diablotin: #13 (Diablotin, 100 words, G). I'm very pleased with this drabble, though there were plenty of others from that series I could have chosen. I like its simplicity, I like the little dialogue, and I feel that it stands on its own quite well, even stripped of its context.

The Moustache Affair (Jeeves & Wooster, 754 words, G). Writing Wodehouse pastiche is challenging, but I think I got the tone fairly close here. It was hard work, so I'm particularly pleased with how it turned out.

Haunted (Changeling, 290 words, PG-13). I had to include something from my Changeling stories, and I absolutely could not pick a chapter that I love better than any of the others, so instead I went with this little stand-alone vignette. I was aiming for a somewhat ethereal, haunting tone, and I think I achieved it, even though it's not my usual, ah, idiom.

***

The White Cloak (ASOIAF, Jaime/Brienne, 677 words, NC-17). This story has gotten comments from people who loved it even though they've never read the books, which to me is pretty high praise. I'm quite proud of it.

Untold Tales (Fables, Bigby/Snow, 706 words, NC-17). Why yes, I do think I'm clever. Possibly insufferably so at times. Also, because I love to sully the stories of your childhood and make sure you'll never think about certain phrases the same way again ;)

Advanced Lessons (Diablotin, Boden/Tigranne/Rayce/Ivona, 5811 words, NC-17). Because I still think this story is completely HOT, even though I wrote it, which usually makes me hyper-conscious of the language in a story and all its little problems and things I should have done differently, and therefore unable to concentrate on its inherent HOTNESS. I don't have that problem here.

Drabble meme
MEME: The first fifteen people to comment on this post get to request a drabble from you. In return, they have to may, if they wish, post this meme in their journal. Post all fandoms you’re willing to write for.

I can write for ASOIAF, BSG, Firefly, House, Babylon 5, Jeeves & Wooster, The Lion in Winter, Sandman, any games I've been involved in... probably other things, especially if I've written it before (see here for the master list). Also, I'm not a stickler that you have to repost in your own journal unless you feel like it - I'm mostly in this for the prompts and the amusement value of writing :) Also also, I have a couple of other writing obligations hanging over my head right now, so if those start eating my brain, I might not get the drabbles done right away, but I'll do my best.

Yuletide requests
Dear Yuletide Author,

First of all, I want to thank you for participating, and tell you you've got excellent taste in fandoms ;) I know that I'll be happy with whatever you write, and I don't want you to stress out over this! *deep, calming breaths* That said, if you want to know more about my turn-ons and turn-offs, or any further details about what I love about these fandoms, you can read more! )

That's all! Remember, you can ignore these details if you want - I'll be pleased with anything involving the specified characters, honestly! I hope you have fun writing whatever you decide to choose :) Thank you again for signing up, and for all the hard work I know you'll put into this over the next couple of months!

- Curtana
